Choose an appropriate input setting
For H.264, YouTube’s recommended input bitrates include 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for the stream sent to YouTube, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain it. Leave headroom for network variation and test from the location and connection you will use. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Test before depending on the stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Do not share or publish the key.
- Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval to the stream you intend to run.
- Start a test with audio and motion similar to the real content. A static screen or silent test may not expose the problems your actual loop will encounter.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health while live, and verify both picture and sound from a viewer’s perspective.
- Test what happens after an encoder restart, a brief network interruption, and a PC reboot. Do not assume recovery works until you have observed it with your own setup.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. It also transcodes live streams to create output formats for viewers, so set and check the input you send rather than assuming each viewer receives your original encoder format. A 24/7 schedule does not change YouTube’s live-stream rules. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and check any licence restrictions on continuous or live use. Copyright claims or other restrictions can interrupt a stream or affect a channel. Repeatedly looping material is also not a shortcut to monetization: review YouTube’s current monetization policies for reused or repetitive content and make sure the channel meets the applicable requirements.
