mpv is the best-documented starting point for playing a YouTube Live playlist on Linux: its manual covers YouTube URL handling through a yt-dlp-compatible hook, playlist files, and Linux hardware-decoding options. That makes it a strong feature match—not a guarantee of smooth 4K at 60fps on every computer. The result depends on the live stream, its available format and codec, and your Linux build, GPU, driver, and display path.

Why mpv is the best starting point

mpv brings together the three capabilities this task needs: it can work with website URLs through a yt-dlp-compatible hook, play playlist files, and use configurable hardware decoding on Linux. Its stable manual documents these features, but does not guarantee that every current YouTube Live URL will work or that a particular machine will sustain 4K60 playback. mpv stable manual

Think of the workflow as two connected parts: a tool extracts or selects a playable stream from the YouTube URL, and the player decodes and displays it. yt-dlp documents format selection and streaming media to standard output; mpv documents an integrated compatible hook. Those general capabilities do not establish compatibility with every live URL, so try your actual stream and playlist. yt-dlp project documentation

Choose by workflow, not an assumed speed ranking

Player Best fit What to keep in mind
mpv A configurable, minimal player with documented URL handling, playlist-file playback, and Linux hardware-decoding methods. Documentation does not guarantee a given YouTube Live URL will work or that your hardware will play it smoothly at 4K60. mpv stable manual
VLC A general-purpose player for people who prefer its interface and broad media and stream support. VideoLAN describes hardware decoding on most platforms. The documentation reviewed does not verify YouTube playlist behavior or comparative 4K60 performance for this exact use. VideoLAN VLC user documentation
Kodi A media-center workflow, with Linux VA-API and VDPAU options documented in its video settings. The cited settings documentation does not establish a convenient YouTube Live playlist workflow or performance on unspecified hardware. Kodi video settings

There is no controlled head-to-head benchmark here for a specific Linux machine, stream, and player version. Choose mpv for its documented combination of URL, playlist, and decoding controls; try VLC if its player interface suits you better, or Kodi if you want a media center. Do not infer that either alternative is faster or more reliable.

Try mpv with your actual live stream and playlist

  1. Install mpv and yt-dlp using your Linux distribution’s package manager. Package names, versions, and build options vary by distribution. Check that the installed mpv build exposes the features described in its manual.
  2. Try the YouTube Live URL in mpv. mpv’s yt-dlp-compatible hook can handle supported website URLs. If the URL fails, check whether yt-dlp can access that specific live stream and whether both tools are current; website extraction behavior and live-stream availability can change.
  3. Make a playlist file for multiple URLs. Add one URL per line in the order you want to play them, save it as a plain-text file, then open that file with mpv—for example, mpv playlist.txt. Playlist-file playback is documented by mpv; whether each YouTube URL resolves successfully still depends on the URL and extraction support.
  4. Check the active stream and codec. A 4K60 label or expectation is not proof that the delivered stream is actually playing at that resolution and frame rate. Inspect the active playback information in your player and identify the codec being decoded before changing hardware-decoding settings.
  5. Check available hardware decoding before selecting a method. mpv documents Linux VA-API and DRM options, and its manual explains how to inspect available hardware-decoding methods. VA-API requires a supported video-output path. The right setting depends on the GPU, driver, codec, player build, and output path, so there is no universal hwdec value to prescribe. mpv stable manual
  6. Compare playback with decoding enabled and disabled. If video stutters, drops frames, or fails to start, test the stream without hardware decoding and then with a supported method. A change in behavior can help isolate a driver, codec, or output-path issue; it does not establish a general performance advantage for one player.

What 4K60 does—and does not—tell you

4K60 playback is an end-to-end compatibility question, not just a player feature. The live stream must offer a suitable format, and the installed player, codec support, GPU, driver, and display path must work together. The official player documents describe capabilities and configuration, not a guarantee for your machine.

YouTube’s HLS guide describes encoder ingest to YouTube and states requirements for H.264/HEVC and up to 60fps in that workflow. Those ingest requirements do not establish what format YouTube delivers to viewers for a particular live stream. YouTube HLS ingest guide

Troubleshoot common playback problems

  • The YouTube URL will not open: The URL extractor and player are separate parts of the workflow, and general support does not guarantee compatibility with every live URL. Check that yt-dlp and mpv are installed and current, then test the exact URL. Confirm that the stream is available to your account and region.
  • The playlist opens, but one entry fails: Check the failing URL on its own. A playlist cannot make an unsupported, unavailable, or access-restricted stream playable.
  • Playback stutters or drops frames: Check the active resolution and codec, then verify that hardware decoding is available for that codec on your GPU and driver. Test the supported output and decoding paths documented for your system; do not copy an arbitrary hwdec setting.
  • Hardware decoding is unavailable: The GPU, driver, codec, mpv build, or video-output path may not support the selected method. mpv documents Linux VA-API and DRM; Kodi documents Linux VA-API and VDPAU. Check the relevant player documentation and your distribution’s driver configuration rather than assuming all Linux systems expose the same options. mpv manual · Kodi video settings
  • A stream shows a lower quality than expected: The YouTube HLS ingest specification is not a viewer-format guarantee. Check the actual formats available for the live stream and the quality selected during playback before concluding that the player is limiting resolution.
