The best laptop case depends on how you carry and use your computer. For most laptops that travel inside a backpack, tote, or briefcase, a padded laptop sleeve is the sensible default. Look for a soft or microfiber lining, meaningful padding, and a closure that keeps the laptop from sliding out. If the sleeve will be carried on its own, a water-resistant exterior and a protected zipper are useful. They do not make the sleeve waterproof: water-resistant fabric or a protected zipper cannot be treated as proof against immersion or prolonged exposure.

Match the shell to the exact model and generation, not merely “MacBook Air” or “MacBook Pro.” Exterior dimensions, port placement, and hinge layouts can vary. A fitted shell also does not surround the computer with the same padded, impact-oriented protection as a rigid travel sleeve.
4. A laptop bag, messenger bag, or backpack for accessories
If you regularly carry a charger, mouse, notebook, headphones, documents, or other equipment, a sleeve alone may not be enough. Screen diagonal is a poor substitute for the computer’s external dimensions. Two laptops with the same advertised screen size may differ in length, width, thickness, aspect ratio, corner shape, and bezel design. Gaming laptops are particularly likely to be thicker and deeper than similarly labeled ultraportables.
- Close the laptop completely. Measure the body rather than the open display.
- Record length, width, and thickness. Use the manufacturer’s published dimensions when available, or measure the laptop yourself at its widest and thickest points.
- Compare those numbers with the case’s internal dimensions. The relevant figure is the laptop compartment, not the case’s outside dimensions.
- Check all three dimensions. A laptop that is narrow enough but too thick can still strain a zipper or fail to enter properly.
- Do not force a borderline fit. An overly tight sleeve makes insertion difficult and can place stress on the closure or laptop edges.
For a snug sleeve, the laptop should not move excessively inside the compartment, but “snug” should never mean that the laptop must be squeezed into place. If a case lists a maximum size, your laptop should be at or below that limit in length, width, and thickness.
