There is no single JBL Bar 800MK2 setting that is best for every room. The dependable approach is to run JBL’s two-stage sound calibration first, then use the documented control defaults as a reference and change one setting at a time. For Dolby Atmos programs, leave the virtual height effects enabled; for ordinary stereo or surround material, compare the effect by ear. The guide below explains the exact calibration sequence, what every control does, and which adjustments make sense for films, music, speech and late-night listening.
The reliable Bar 800MK2 baseline
The Bar 800MK2 combines a 7.1-channel soundbar, detachable wireless surround speakers, a 10-inch (260 mm) subwoofer, MultiBeam 3.0, Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X, according to JBL’s product page. Those features describe the hardware; they do not establish one universally correct tonal balance. Room size, wall reflections, seating distance, program mix and personal hearing all change the result.
Use the controls in the table as a neutral starting point after calibration. The values are the defaults documented in the JBL Bar 800MK2 Owner’s Manual (Global English V6), not a manufacturer-certified ideal for every listener.

| Control | Documented behavior | How to use the baseline |
|---|---|---|
| Sound calibration | Two stages: listening-zone calibration followed by speaker-position calibration. | Complete both stages after placing the system. The first stage measures the listening area; the second accounts for the final locations of the detachable speakers. |
| Virtual Dolby Atmos effects | On by default. The height effects apply only when the incoming soundtrack is Dolby Atmos. | Keep them on for Atmos movies and shows. With non-Atmos material, treat on-versus-off as a personal listening choice. |
| Bass | Five levels, LVL 1 through LVL 5; the manual’s default is LVL 3. | Begin at LVL 3, then move only one step at a time if explosions, music or room resonance sound too weak or too heavy. |
| Detachable rear surround level | LOW, MID, HIGH or MUTE when both rears are undocked; MID is the default. | Use MID as the post-calibration reference. Change it only after checking that both speakers are on the correct sides and at useful listening height. |
| Night Listening | Selected in the JBL One app with both detachable speakers undocked; the soundbar and subwoofer are muted. | Place the rears close to the listener for a quiet session. Playback then comes from the nearby detachable speakers. |
| Audio sync | The remote and JBL One app provide an audio-delay adjustment. | Use it only when voices visibly lead or lag the picture. It is a timing correction, not a bass, surround or dialogue-quality control. |
| PureVoice 2.0 | JBL describes automatic dialogue optimization that responds to ambient sound in the scene and the soundbar volume. | Let it operate automatically. The reviewed manual does not document a user-settable PureVoice level or a numeric dialogue slider. |

Calibrate the system before changing sound levels
Calibration is the only model-specific procedure that adapts the Bar 800MK2 to your room. It is intended to optimize surround reproduction for the listening environment, not to guarantee a particular subjective result. Run it again if you substantially move the bar, subwoofer, seating position or detachable speakers.
Prepare the room and speakers
- Choose a quiet period so the microphones do not hear television, conversation, fans or other room noise.
- During the first stage, keep the soundbar and both detachable rear speakers in sight of one another, as required by the manual.
- Place the left rear on the listener’s left and the right rear on the listener’s right. Do not swap them to solve a placement problem.
- Initially put both detachable speakers beside the listening position. This is the position used for the listening-zone measurement.
- Make sure the soundbar, subwoofer and rears are powered and connected before starting.
Run listening-zone calibration
- Open the Bar 800MK2’s sound-calibration function using the controls described in the owner’s manual or the current JBL One app interface.
- Leave the detachable speakers beside the main listening position while the first measurement runs.
- Remain quiet and avoid standing between the soundbar and either rear speaker.
- Wait for the calibration to finish before changing speaker locations or levels.
Run speaker-position calibration
- Move the detachable speakers to their intended left and right surround positions.
- Keep each speaker on its corresponding side and maintain a clear relationship between the bar and the rears.
- Start the speaker-position calibration stage.
- Do not interrupt the tones or move the speakers until the process completes.
This order matters: the first stage establishes the listening zone, while the second tells the system where the speakers ended up. Running only one stage leaves the setup without the complete two-step baseline described by JBL.
What calibration can and cannot fix
Calibration can optimize the surround presentation for the measured environment. It cannot make a rear speaker audible through a closed door, correct a left-right wiring mistake, eliminate every room mode, or turn a non-Atmos soundtrack into native Atmos. If the result is still too bright, boomy or diffuse, make a small manual change after checking placement and source format.
Best settings for movies and surround sound
Dolby Atmos movies
For a soundtrack identified as Dolby Atmos, leave the virtual Dolby Atmos effects enabled. The manual states that the height effects operate only on Dolby Atmos audio, so enabling them does not add a height layer to an ordinary stereo stream. Start playback after calibration and allow a few minutes for your ears to adapt before judging the height impression.
Keep the calibrated bass and rear levels from the baseline table for the first viewing. If the subwoofer overwhelms dialogue or causes a single-seat boom, reduce bass by one level. If overhead or side effects disappear at the main seat, verify that both rears are undocked, on the correct sides and not blocked before increasing rear output. A level change cannot repair a placement error.

Non-Atmos films and television
For Dolby Digital, PCM, stereo or other non-Atmos material, the height-effect switch is a preference decision because the documented height processing does not apply to those Atmos-only signals. Watch a familiar scene with the effect on, then repeat it with the effect off at the same comfortable volume. Keep the option that preserves clear front imaging and natural surround movement in your room.
Balancing bass and rear surround
Change one control at a time. First set the bass level, then replay the same scene before touching rear output. Raising both together makes it difficult to tell whether a louder explosion came from the subwoofer or a stronger surround mix.
- Too little impact: Increase bass one step and check whether the room, rather than the soundtrack, is vibrating. If only one seat sounds boomy, return to the previous level and reconsider subwoofer placement.
- Too much impact: Reduce bass one step. A lower setting often restores male-voice fundamentals and music detail that a resonant room masks.
- Surrounds seem absent: Confirm that both detachable speakers are undocked, charged and assigned to the correct sides. Then move the rear level up one setting and reassess.
- Surrounds draw attention: Move the rear level down one setting. The goal is a continuous sound field, not a speaker that calls attention to itself.
Use a consistent movie test
Choose a scene containing a quiet conversation, a moving sound effect and a low-frequency event. Replay it at the same volume after each change. This exposes trade-offs that a single explosion or a short musical cue can hide.
Best settings for music
The reviewed manual documents bass and rear-surround adjustment but does not identify a dedicated music mode, genre preset or music-specific equalizer curve. Do not search for a secret numeric “music setting”; there is no model-specific value established in the cited documentation.
A practical music starting point
- Complete both calibration stages with the speakers in their normal positions.
- Play a well-recorded track that you know, preferably one with vocals, acoustic instruments and a steady bass line.
- Use the baseline bass and rear levels from the control table for the first listen.
- If the low end masks the kick drum or vocal, lower bass by one step. If the track sounds thin at your normal volume, raise it by one step.
- Adjust rear output only when you want more or less room-filling ambience. Keep the front vocal image stable.
Music mixed in stereo may sound more focused with less rear contribution, while a concert recording can benefit from a wider surround presentation. Those are listening choices, not documented genre presets. Make the comparison with the same track and volume so loudness is not mistaken for improved quality.

Personalize through the JBL One app
JBL says the JBL One app can personalize audio settings and provide access to music services. App screens can change with software updates, so use the current labels shown in your installed version rather than relying on an unverified fixed menu path. The app is useful for making and saving your own preference changes, but it does not change the documented limits of the Bar 800MK2 controls.
Dialogue settings: what PureVoice 2.0 actually does
PureVoice 2.0 is described by JBL as automatic dialogue optimization: it raises or optimizes speech according to ambient sound in the scene and the soundbar’s volume. The owner’s manual reviewed for this guide does not specify a separate PureVoice intensity, dialogue-level number or manual slider.
When speech is hard to understand
- Confirm that the source is not accidentally muted or playing a low-quality downmix.
- Run both calibration stages if the room or speaker positions changed.
- Leave PureVoice to make its automatic adjustment rather than looking for an undocumented level control.
- Reduce bass one step if low-frequency effects are covering speech.
- Check the audio-sync control only when the problem is timing—mouth movements and words do not line up—not when voices are simply too quiet.
Do not raise rear output to solve a front-channel dialogue problem. More surround energy can make speech seem less centered even when the dialogue channel itself has not changed.
Night Listening for late hours
Night Listening is the Bar 800MK2’s clearest model-specific option for quiet playback. The manual requires the JBL One app and both detachable speakers undocked. When enabled, the soundbar and subwoofer are muted, leaving playback through the nearby detachable speakers.
Set it up
- Undock both detachable speakers and place them close to your listening position, one on each side if practical.
- Open the JBL One app and select Night Listening using the controls shown in the current app version.
- Start at a low volume and increase only until speech and essential detail are comfortable.
- When finished, return the speakers to their normal positions and disable Night Listening before the next full-room session.
Because the bar and subwoofer are muted in this mode, it is not a substitute for normal surround playback. You should expect less whole-room bass and a different spatial presentation, by design.

Placement checks that matter more than small level changes
Before chasing a “best” number, verify the physical setup. The calibration process assumes the left and right detachable speakers are correctly identified and that the soundbar and rears can communicate during measurement.
- Keep the left and right labels consistent from calibration through everyday use.
- Do not run the listening-zone stage with the rears already in distant final positions; the manual specifies placing them beside the listening position first.
- Run the second stage after moving them to the positions you will actually use.
- Keep both rears undocked when you need rear-level control or Night Listening.
- If one rear is silent, check its charge, connection and side assignment before changing surround level.
How to compare two settings without fooling yourself
Human hearing favors the louder option, so a fair comparison needs consistent conditions. Use the following method whenever you test Atmos effects, bass or rear output:
- Choose one short, familiar passage containing the feature you are evaluating.
- Set a comfortable playback volume and leave it unchanged.
- Change one variable only: Atmos effects, bass, rear level or speaker position.
- Listen through the entire passage, not just the loudest moment.
- Write down what improved and what became worse before trying the next change.
- Keep the setting that works across several scenes or tracks, not the one that wins a single dramatic sample.
This one-factor approach is practical listening guidance, not a JBL-prescribed test protocol. It prevents simultaneous changes from hiding the cause of an improvement or a problem.
Troubleshooting common results
The system sounds different after moving the rears
That is expected: the room and speaker geometry changed. Run the listening-zone stage with the rears beside the listening position, then run speaker-position calibration again after returning them to their final locations.

Rear-level buttons do nothing
The manual documents LOW, MID, HIGH and MUTE control when both detachable speakers are undocked. Docked speakers therefore do not provide the same rear-level adjustment. Undock both units and retry.
Voices and lips are out of sync
Use the Bar 800MK2 audio-sync adjustment on the remote or in the JBL One app. Adjust timing in small increments while watching a speaking face. Do not alter bass or rear level to correct a delay.
Night Listening still sounds too loud
Move both undocked speakers closer to the listener and lower their playback volume. In this mode the bar and subwoofer are muted, so a loud result is coming from the nearby detachable speakers rather than the subwoofer.

The manufacturer lists the system as 7.1-channel with a 10-inch (260 mm) subwoofer, detachable surround speakers, MultiBeam 3.0, Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X. JBL also specifies up to 10 hours of playtime for the detachable speakers, with actual duration varying by content and volume. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of loudness, frequency response, battery endurance in your room or the quality of any particular setting.
Quick Recap
Final setup checklist
- Run calibration in a quiet room with the soundbar and both rears in sight of one another.
- Complete the listening-zone stage with the rears beside the listening position.
- Move the rears to their final left and right positions and complete speaker-position calibration.
- Use the documented defaults in the baseline table before making preference changes.
- For Atmos content, keep virtual height effects enabled; evaluate the switch by ear for non-Atmos content.
- Change bass or rear output one step at a time and replay the same passage.
- Treat PureVoice 2.0 as automatic; do not expect a manual dialogue slider.
- Use Night Listening from the JBL One app with both rears undocked and placed near you when the bar and subwoofer need to be muted.
- Reserve audio sync for picture-to-sound timing problems.
