The safest default is a disposable virtual machine or microVM with no network access, no host-workspace mount, credentials kept outside the guest, and continuous monitoring. Use an offline benchmark or an internal cyber range for targets. Add a tightly controlled proxy and domain allowlist only when the evaluation genuinely needs network realism. Local Docker Sandboxes are a practical microVM option; Kubernetes with gVisor or Kata suits repeatable multi-agent services; Proxmox or cloud VMs provide a stronger boundary for exploit and escape testing.
The right choice depends on the risk of the agent, the realism you need, and how many trials you must run. This guide compares the boundaries, networking models, workspace policies, observability, and benchmark worlds that let you evaluate autonomous hacking behavior without touching real systems.
What makes an isolated environment safe for an AI hacking agent?
Isolation is not a single product setting. A credible test separates five control planes: the compute boundary, network policy, credentials, workspace, and monitoring. A weakness in any one of them can let an agent affect a host, leak secrets, or reach an unintended target even when the main workload appears to be inside a container.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compute boundary
A conventional container shares the host kernel. A kernel flaw, unsafe capability, or misconfigured device can therefore become a path toward the host. A virtual machine (VM) supplies a separate guest kernel; a microVM uses the same principle with a smaller device model and faster startup. Kubernetes sandboxes that use gVisor intercept many Linux system calls in userspace, creating an intermediate boundary rather than a full second kernel.

Network policy
For high-risk work, start with no network route. The UK National Cyber Security Centre describes an isolated and disconnected environment with pre-downloaded tools and information as the most robust approach for high-risk activity. Anthropic similarly states that cyber evaluations should, by default, run in a hardened sandbox with no internet access. If a model API or an internal service is required, expose only that endpoint through a proxy and log every request.
Credential separation
Do not place long-lived cloud keys, source-control tokens, SSH private keys, or personal browser sessions in the guest. Inject short-lived, least-privilege credentials through a broker or proxy that can revoke them independently of the agent. The guest should receive only the operation it needs, not the underlying secret value, whenever the tooling permits that design.
Workspace policy
A mount is part of the attack surface. A mountless workspace is the strongest local default. A clone or copy-on-write workspace gives the agent realistic files while preserving the original. A direct read-write host mount is convenient, but it removes the host-filesystem boundary for that path and should be treated as an explicit exception.
Monitoring and automatic stop
Capture process launches, file changes, network attempts, privilege changes, and calls to the credential broker. Add a pause condition for unexpected egress, host-device access, kernel or hypervisor probing, or attempts to modify the evaluator. Keep the monitor outside the guest so an agent cannot disable the evidence trail.
How do Docker Sandboxes compare with other isolation choices?
Docker Sandboxes run each agent in a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel and a separate Docker Engine. That gives a stronger boundary than an ordinary container while retaining a fast local workflow. The main decision is whether the sandbox is mountless, cloned, or directly connected to a workspace.
| Environment | Host boundary | Typical network model | Workspace choices | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary container | Shared host kernel | Offline or policy-controlled network | Volumes and bind mounts | Low-risk tooling and trusted code | Weakest isolation against kernel or capability escape |
| Docker Sandbox | Lightweight microVM with separate kernel and Docker Engine | Proxied traffic governed by policy | Mountless, clone, or direct mount | Individual researchers and small teams needing a quick local harness | Direct mounts and broad proxy rules can reintroduce host or egress risk |
| Kubernetes with gVisor | Userspace syscall interception (AISI H2 tier) | Network policies and domain allowlists | Ephemeral or persistent volumes | Repeatable, multi-tenant service evaluations | More operational complexity and not the same boundary as a full VM |
| Kubernetes with Kata | VM-backed pod isolation (AISI H2/H3-style deployment) | Policy-controlled cluster networking | Persistent or disposable volumes | Cluster-scale trials needing a stronger pod boundary | Higher startup and resource overhead than gVisor |
| Proxmox or cloud VM | Separate guest kernel, memory, and devices (AISI H3) | Disconnected, private network, or narrow proxy | Snapshots and dedicated virtual disks | Exploit, privilege-escalation, and escape testing | Slower provisioning and higher operating cost |
AISI’s notation is useful when documenting a test: record tooling as T, host isolation as H, and network controls as N. Two evaluations that both say “sandboxed” may have very different T/H/N profiles, so the notation prevents a container and a VM from being treated as equivalent.
How should I configure a Docker Sandbox for an untrusted agent?
Use a mountless or clone-based sandbox, keep the network blocked by default, and make every exception observable and revocable. A direct workspace mount should be reserved for data that is disposable or already isolated from the host.

- Create a disposable image. Pin the operating-system image, language runtimes, security tools, and benchmark data. Remove compilers, package managers, and administrative utilities that the scenario does not require.
- Choose mountless or clone mode. Mountless mode gives the agent no host path. Clone mode provides a copy-on-write working tree so an agent can edit realistic files without changing the original. Treat a direct mount as a deliberate risk acceptance because writes reach the host path.
- Set the network policy to deny by default. For an offline evaluation, provide cached documentation, package archives, and target services inside the sandbox network. If the model API must be reachable, route only that connection through a proxy.
- Keep credentials outside the microVM. Use a broker that returns narrowly scoped, short-lived results. Log the request, destination, and expiry, and revoke the credential when the trial pauses or ends.
- Separate the evaluator. Run grading, telemetry, and pause controls outside the agent’s Docker Engine. The agent should not be able to delete logs, alter grading code, or stop the monitor.
- Snapshot and destroy. Save the initial image digest and benchmark version, then discard the sandbox after each run. Reusing a modified guest can hide failures and allow persistence from one trial to the next.
Docker’s microVM design is a good local compromise when a team needs rapid iteration. It is not a reason to relax controls: a broad proxy, a read-write mount, or an exposed host socket can negate the boundary you selected.
When is Kubernetes with gVisor or Kata the better choice?
Use a Kubernetes-based sandbox when you need many concurrent trials, persistent sessions, warm capacity, or policy managed across a team. gVisor is the lighter middle tier; Kata supplies VM-backed isolation for workloads that need a stronger pod boundary.
gVisor for scale with syscall mediation
gVisor intercepts Linux system calls in userspace. Combined with Kubernetes network policies, it can enforce domain allowlists and separate tenants while using less capacity than a VM per trial. This is appropriate for broad benchmark sweeps and services that do not require unusual kernel features.
Kata for a stronger pod boundary
Kata runs workloads in lightweight virtual machines. It generally costs more CPU, memory, and startup time than gVisor, but reduces dependence on the host kernel. Choose it when the agent is asked to exploit local services, attempt privilege escalation, or probe the container boundary.
What Agent Sandbox adds
Agent Sandbox provides a Kubernetes-native API for agent environments. Its capabilities include warm pools, persistent storage, hibernation, and selectable gVisor or Kata runtimes. Those controls help keep trial setup consistent while allowing long-running sessions to pause without retaining an active compute footprint.
Cluster isolation still requires more than a runtime class. Use separate nodes or node pools for high-risk jobs, block access to the Kubernetes API, deny host networking and privileged pods, and keep the control plane and logging path outside the agent’s credentials.
When should I use a full VM such as Proxmox or a cloud instance?
Choose a full VM when the test explicitly includes exploitation, privilege escalation, persistence, or escape attempts. VMs do not share the host kernel or memory, so they provide the strongest general-purpose boundary in this set, at the cost of slower provisioning and more infrastructure to patch and monitor.

Use snapshots as a safety control
Create a clean snapshot before each trial and revert rather than attempting to clean a compromised guest. Keep benchmark targets and the agent on separate virtual networks, and make the management interface unreachable from the guest. A second VM can host the grader and telemetry so the agent cannot tamper with results.

Choose private or disconnected networking
A VM can run entirely offline, on a host-only network, or behind a narrow egress proxy. For high-risk exploit development, disconnected or host-only networking is preferable. If external access is unavoidable, allow only the model endpoint and explicitly required update or artifact domains.
Account for operational cost
Full VMs consume more memory and storage than microVMs or gVisor sandboxes, and cloud instances add recurring compute and egress charges. The premium is justified when the test’s purpose is to discover escape behavior rather than merely measure task completion.
Can I test an autonomous pentest agent without touching the internet?
Yes. Build an offline world containing the target services, indexed documentation, package caches, and a model endpoint reachable through a controlled internal interface. This provides realistic workflows without allowing the agent to scan or exploit public systems.
OpenAI describes an offline world made from indexed and cached content for training and evaluation. Its cyber-range tests use isolated copies with monitoring and programmatic pause checks. OpenAI also notes that completely air-gapping the infrastructure is not currently feasible for its own experiments because external connections are needed to run and monitor them; that qualification is a reminder to design the smallest possible controlled connection rather than assume “air-gapped” means a universal implementation.

Build the offline target network
- Place vulnerable applications, databases, identity services, and logging endpoints on a private virtual network.
- Preload manuals, source archives, package indexes, and exploit-development dependencies that the scenario allows.
- Provide synthetic identities and secrets that cannot authenticate to production or personal services.
- Route model requests through an internal gateway that records prompts, responses, rate limits, and failures.
- Block DNS recursion and direct IP egress unless the scenario explicitly needs an internal resolver.
Use an allowlist when offline is too restrictive
An allowlist should name exact destinations and ports, not simply “the internet.” Put the rule in a proxy or egress gateway, require authentication at that gateway, and retain connection logs. Review every new destination as a change to the experiment’s threat model.
Which cyber ranges and benchmarks are reproducible?
No single benchmark measures every form of agentic hacking. Select the target content that matches the behavior you want to grade, then keep the environment image and benchmark version fixed for comparisons.

| Benchmark | What it tests | Published scale or result | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| CyberGym | Historical software vulnerabilities across many projects | 1,507 instances from 188 software projects | You need breadth across known vulnerability patterns |
| AgentCyberRange | Web exploitation and multi-host enterprise attack paths | 110 vulnerabilities in 15 web applications; eight enterprise-like ranges with 156 internal hosts | You need realistic lateral movement and post-exploitation scenarios |
| CVE-Bench | Sandboxed real-world web-application CVE tasks | Evaluated state-of-the-art agent exploited up to 13% of vulnerabilities in the reported study | You want focused web-CVE exploitation measurements |
| SRE-Bench | Binary reverse engineering and deterministic grading | 19 private programs, 262 binary instances, and 1,572 tasks | You are evaluating binary analysis rather than network attack paths |
What AgentCyberRange results mean
In the reported setup, GPT-5.5 with Codex achieved 16.1% web-exploitation success and 31.7% post-exploitation success. Adding hints raised those figures to 33.0% and 46.3%. These are benchmark-specific results, not a general success rate for autonomous hacking agents; preserve the setup, hints, and grading rules when comparing runs.
Match the benchmark to the isolation
CyberGym and CVE-Bench can run as disposable application targets in a private network. AgentCyberRange benefits from multiple VMs or microVMs because its enterprise-like scenarios contain internal hosts and attack paths. SRE-Bench’s deterministic binary tasks fit isolated containers, provided the binaries and grading harness cannot reach production systems.

How do I design a safe evaluation from start to finish?
Define the risk profile before selecting a runtime. The following sequence keeps realism from silently expanding the attack surface.
- Write the objective. State whether the agent must find a bug, exploit a service, move between hosts, reverse-engineer a binary, or attempt an escape. Do not grant escape-capable tools to a task that only needs static analysis.
- Record the T/H/N profile. Document the tooling, host boundary, and network mode using AISI’s notation. Include runtime version, kernel or microVM version, and whether the environment is offline, allowlisted, or proxied.
- Choose disposable targets. Use CyberGym for vulnerability breadth, CVE-Bench for web CVEs, AgentCyberRange for multi-host realism, or SRE-Bench for binary analysis.
- Prepare synthetic access. Create test accounts, fake secrets, and isolated certificates. Ensure none can be reused against a real organization or cloud account.
- Apply the smallest workspace. Prefer mountless or clone workspaces. If a mount is necessary, make it read-only where possible and populate it with copies rather than originals.
- Install monitoring before the agent starts. Capture system calls or process events available at the chosen layer, file modifications, DNS and proxy requests, authentication events, and hypervisor or host-device probes.
- Define pause and abort rules. Stop on unexpected egress, access to management interfaces, attempts to disable monitoring, credential-broker abuse, or traffic outside the declared target range.
- Run one trial per snapshot. Record the initial image digest, benchmark revision, model version, prompt or policy, hints, geography, and date. Revert or destroy the environment after grading.
- Review the evidence. Separate task success from containment success. An agent that completed a benchmark while escaping the sandbox is a failed safety trial, not a successful attack result.
What are the most common containment failures?
Exposed host sockets or devices
A Docker socket, privileged device, host PID namespace, or host network can provide capabilities far beyond the intended task. Remove them unless the test is specifically about that boundary, and then use a VM rather than a shared host as the next layer.
Overbroad mounts
A convenient project directory may contain source, credentials, SSH configuration, or cloud metadata. Use a generated copy, narrow the path, make it read-only, and destroy it after the run.
Uncontrolled package installation
Package managers create both egress and supply-chain risk. Pre-cache approved artifacts and block package registries during the run. If installation is part of the task, mirror only the required repositories inside the evaluation network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCredential leakage through logs
Redact tokens at the broker and telemetry pipeline, not only in a final report. Test that prompts, command output, crash dumps, and shell history cannot reveal reusable secrets.

False confidence from a clean result
A run that did not escape proves only that the tested path did not escape under those conditions. Repeat with different kernels, runtimes, images, and workload timing, and include deliberate escape probes when that is part of the security objective.
How should I choose among Docker, Kubernetes, and VMs?
Use the simplest boundary that still covers the agent’s capabilities and the consequences of failure.
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast local iteration on disposable tasks | Docker Sandbox in mountless or clone mode | MicroVM isolation with a lightweight workflow |
| Hundreds of repeatable trials or persistent sessions | Kubernetes with gVisor; use Kata for higher-risk pods | Policy, scheduling, warm pools, hibernation, and storage are centralized |
| Exploit, escalation, or escape testing | Dedicated VM on Proxmox or a cloud provider | Separate guest kernel and memory provide a stronger general-purpose boundary |
| Maximum realism without public exposure | Offline multi-VM cyber range | Enterprise-like services and attack paths can be reproduced privately |
| Binary-focused evaluation | Isolated containers such as those used by SRE-Bench | Deterministic grading with limited network requirements |
Do not select on startup speed alone. A fast sandbox with a host mount and unrestricted egress can be less safe than a slower VM with snapshots, a private network, and an external monitor.

Record the complete execution context, not only the model name and score. At minimum, keep:
- Runtime and image digests, guest kernel or microVM version, and host platform.
- AISI T/H/N profile, network rules, proxy configuration, and DNS behavior.
- Benchmark name and revision, target inventory, hints, grading code, and reset method.
- Model version, system policy, tool definitions, temperature or sampling settings, and maximum run time.
- Credential scopes, broker behavior, mounted paths, and workspace mode.
- Start and end timestamps, geography, software versions, and any changes made during the trial.
- Complete telemetry, pause events, failed actions, and the final snapshot or destruction record.
Benchmark inventories and software behavior change. Dates and versions therefore belong beside every score; otherwise a later result may look comparable while testing a different target set or runtime.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a container alone enough for testing an autonomous hacking agent?
Usually not for high-risk agents. Containers share the host kernel, so add a microVM, gVisor, Kata, or full VM boundary when the agent can exploit services, escalate privileges, or probe for escapes.
How can I let an agent use an API without giving it a secret key?
Place an internal broker or proxy between the guest and the API. The broker authenticates with the real credential, exposes only the permitted operation, applies rate and destination limits, and records each request.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is the difference between a cyber range and a benchmark?
A cyber range is the isolated world of hosts, services, identities, and networks in which the agent operates. A benchmark adds a defined task set and grading method, making results comparable across runs.
Should I keep a compromised sandbox for forensic analysis?
Preserve a read-only snapshot or disk image and its external telemetry, then destroy the live environment. Continuing to run a compromised guest can create persistence and increases the chance of accidental egress.
