The best cloud-gaming connection is the one that reaches your provider’s data center with enough bandwidth and consistently low delay. A fast advertised download tier is not sufficient by itself. Use Ethernet when practical; otherwise use 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, meet your service’s resolution-specific bandwidth target, and test latency to the service rather than relying only on a generic speed test.
Requirements differ by service. GeForce NOW lists targets from 15 Mbps for 720p up to 65 Mbps for 5K, plus less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center. PlayStation cloud streaming requires at least 5 Mbps upload and download to start a session and recommends 13 Mbps at 720p through 52 Mbps at 2160p. Those figures are provider-specific, not universal guarantees.
What internet speed do I need for cloud gaming?
You need enough sustained bandwidth for the resolution and frame rate you select, with low and stable latency to the cloud-gaming provider. Check the provider’s own requirement rather than applying one speed threshold to every service.
GeForce NOW bandwidth and latency targets
NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW system requirements (accessed in 2026) specify these targets:

| GeForce NOW mode | Required bandwidth | Other stated requirement |
|---|---|---|
| HD, up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps | Less than 80 ms network latency from an NVIDIA data center |
| FHD, 60 FPS | 25 Mbps | |
| UW QHD/QHD, 120 FPS | 35 Mbps | |
| 4K, 120 FPS | 45 Mbps | |
| QHD/FHD, 240 or 360 FPS | 55 Mbps | |
| 5K, 120 FPS | 65 Mbps |
Higher-end resolutions and frame rates also depend on your membership level and device support. The less-than-80-ms figure is latency from an NVIDIA data center, not a universal promise that every game will feel responsive below that number.
PlayStation cloud-streaming targets
Sony says PlayStation cloud streaming on PS5 and PlayStation Portal needs broadband with at least 5 Mbps of both upload and download speed to establish a session. Its recommended speeds vary by output resolution:
| Resolution | Recommended speed |
|---|---|
| 720p | 13 Mbps |
| 1080p | 23 Mbps |
| 1440p | 38 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 52 Mbps |
PlayStation notes that performance varies with the game and network environment. PlayStation Plus Premium is required, only eligible games can be streamed, and availability is limited to Sony’s listed countries and regions.
How to compare the two sets of numbers
These figures answer slightly different questions. PlayStation publishes a minimum in each direction for starting a session and a recommended rate for each output resolution. NVIDIA lists a bandwidth target for each combination of resolution and frame rate, plus a latency ceiling to its data center. A 25 Mbps connection may meet GeForce NOW’s FHD-at-60-FPS target, but that does not make it a universal requirement or guarantee for PlayStation, another cloud service, or a different game mode.
Use the highest mode you actually intend to play. If you select 1080p rather than 4K, compare your sustained result with the 1080p recommendation instead of paying attention to a provider’s maximum 5K or 2160p figure. If you switch to a higher refresh mode later, check the table again; the bandwidth target can rise substantially even when the resolution stays similar.
Why advertised speed is only one part of the answer
A speed test normally measures throughput to a nearby test server. Cloud gaming depends on the route to a provider’s data center, so a high download result does not prove that your session will have low delay or no variation in delay. Household traffic, Wi‑Fi interference and congestion can also consume the available capacity while you play.
Upload capacity matters too. The controller and device must send traffic upstream, and an upload-heavy backup can interfere with a session even when your download plan looks generous. That is why Sony states both upload and download minimums, and why testing both directions is useful.
What router settings are best for cloud gaming?
Start with the two connection methods NVIDIA explicitly recommends: a hardwired Ethernet connection, or a router using 5 GHz Wi‑Fi. Beyond that, there is no single set of channel, DNS, port-forwarding or QoS values that official requirements establish for every cloud-gaming service.
Rank #2
- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
Use Ethernet when the device can be wired
Connect the console, PC or handheld dock directly to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable. Wired access removes the local wireless hop and is the preferred option in NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW guidance. The official requirement does not specify a cable category, length or brand; choose a cable long enough to avoid tight bends and place the router where the cable run is practical.
You do not need a specialty cable marketed for gaming. A normal, compatible Ethernet cable is the directly relevant accessory because the recommendation is about using a wired path. No particular cable price, category, brand or advertised speed is established as necessary by the service requirements.
Choose 5 GHz Wi‑Fi for wireless play
If wiring is impractical, connect the gaming device to the router’s 5 GHz network. NVIDIA specifically recommends a router with a 5 GHz Wi‑Fi connection. Keep the device within a strong signal area, avoid hiding the router behind furniture or metal, and use the router’s normal automatic channel selection unless you have a measured interference problem. A particular Wi‑Fi generation or a product marketed as a “gaming router” is not required by the cited service requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeparate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz can make it easier to confirm which band the device uses. If your router combines the bands under one name, check the router or device status page rather than assuming it selected 5 GHz. A strong 5 GHz signal is preferable to a distant, marginal connection; distance and walls can reduce its stability.
Do not assume advanced settings are universal fixes
The official GeForce NOW and PlayStation pages do not establish a universal gaming QoS profile, mandatory channel number, channel width, DNS server, port-forwarding rule or bufferbloat value. Router interfaces and home-network conditions differ. Change one setting at a time, record the original value, and keep a change only if testing shows a repeatable improvement.
In particular, do not open ports simply because a gaming forum recommends it. Cloud-streaming services can change infrastructure, and a port rule that is unnecessary for one service may not help another. The same caution applies to replacing DNS: name lookup and the continuing game-stream path are separate functions, so a new resolver is not automatically a latency cure.
How do I configure my network for a cloud-gaming session?
Use this order so that you fix the highest-impact variables before experimenting with advanced router features.
- Confirm service eligibility. Check that your plan, device, game and country or region support cloud streaming. For PlayStation, verify PlayStation Plus Premium and the eligible-game list.
- Select your target mode. Decide whether you need 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K or a high-refresh mode. Read the service’s bandwidth target for that exact resolution and frame rate.
- Connect by Ethernet if possible. Plug the gaming device into a router LAN port and disable Wi‑Fi on the device for the session so it cannot roam between connections.
- Otherwise join 5 GHz Wi‑Fi. Select the router’s 5 GHz network, not a distant or weak wireless connection. Move closer to the router if the signal is unstable.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads and other high-volume activity while testing. Ask other household users to avoid those activities during a session.
- Run the provider’s network test where available. NVIDIA’s requirements point users to its own network-test guidance; use that test to measure the path to NVIDIA rather than relying only on a generic speed-test result.
- Launch a repeatable game test. Try the same title and scene at the same time of day, then compare wired and wireless results. Look for input delay, image-quality drops, disconnects and stutter, not just the headline Mbps number.
Make one change per test. For example, first measure Ethernet with household traffic paused, then repeat over 5 GHz, then repeat during a busy evening. This sequence helps distinguish an internet-plan limitation from a wireless or congestion problem.

How should I test latency, stability and bandwidth?
Take several measurements, because a single result can hide congestion. Record download and upload throughput, latency, and whether the result changes when another person uses the connection.
- Bandwidth: Compare the measured sustained rate with the service’s target for your selected mode. GeForce NOW’s targets range from 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 FPS to 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 FPS. PlayStation’s recommendations range from 13 Mbps at 720p to 52 Mbps at 2160p.
- Latency: For GeForce NOW, the stated requirement is less than 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. A nearby generic test server may report a different value.
- Consistency: Repeat tests at busy evening hours and when the household is using the network. Large swings, temporary loss of connection or visible stutter are warning signs even when the average speed is high.
- Connection path: Test Ethernet and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi separately. If Ethernet is stable and Wi‑Fi is not, the bottleneck is local wireless conditions rather than your internet plan.
Latency is the time traffic takes to travel, while stability describes whether that time and the available throughput remain consistent. A connection can post an excellent peak Mbps result yet feel poor if delay varies or packets are lost during busy periods. Observe the game over a meaningful session, not only during the few seconds of a speed test.
How much extra bandwidth should I leave for other household devices?
Neither provider publishes a universal “extra Mbps” allowance for other devices. Treat the published figure as the minimum target for the gaming stream, then account for simultaneous video calls, uploads, backups and streaming in your home. If the stream degrades only when another device becomes active, reduce or schedule that traffic before changing router settings.

Test the actual combination of devices you expect to use, and judge the result by sustained play, image quality and responsiveness.
What should I change when cloud gaming stutters or disconnects?
The session will not start
- Check that both upload and download meet the service minimum. PlayStation requires 5 Mbps in each direction to establish a streaming session.
- Verify account, membership, game and regional eligibility. A supported connection cannot bypass a service-access restriction.
- Restart the router and device, then retest with other large network transfers paused.
The picture is blurry or resolution drops
- Compare your measured sustained bandwidth with the target for the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Switch from a weak wireless link to Ethernet, or move the device closer to the router’s 5 GHz signal.
- Check for another household device consuming upload capacity; cloud gaming needs a stable two-way connection, not just a fast download.
- Confirm that the selected mode is supported by your membership and device. Higher-end GeForce NOW modes have those additional requirements.
Controls feel delayed
- Measure latency to the provider’s data center where the service offers a test. A generic speed test cannot establish that path.
- Try Ethernet to remove local Wi‑Fi delay and interference.
- Test at a less congested time. If delay is still high on a wired connection, the route to the provider or geographic distance may be the limiting factor.
Wi‑Fi works near the router but fails elsewhere
That pattern points to signal quality or interference. Use Ethernet, relocate the router to a central open position, or play within reliable 5 GHz coverage. Do not jump straight to port forwarding or a new DNS server; the cited provider requirements do not identify those as general remedies.
Performance changes from one evening to the next
Repeat the provider-specific test during both quiet and busy periods. If the wired connection worsens only at peak hours, local or access-network congestion is more likely than a missing router feature. If only Wi‑Fi changes, investigate signal placement and interference first.
Do I need a special “gaming” router?
No. The documented requirement is a router with 5 GHz Wi‑Fi when you are not using Ethernet; neither NVIDIA nor Sony establishes a specific gaming-router model or advanced feature as necessary. A new router is justified only when your existing hardware cannot provide a stable wired connection or reliable 5 GHz coverage for the gaming device.

Are cloud-gaming requirements the same on every service?
No. GeForce NOW and PlayStation publish different numbers and eligibility rules. Xbox figures are not included here because the relevant support page did not provide accessible requirements; check the current Xbox documentation directly before applying another service’s thresholds.
For any provider, compare the minimum session bandwidth, the recommended bandwidth for your chosen resolution, the latency requirement, the connection recommendation and the service’s device and regional eligibility. Do not treat one provider’s figure as a guarantee for another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the practical setup for common scenarios?
Wired PC or console
Connect the device to a router LAN port, pause competing transfers, run the provider’s test and then play at the desired resolution. This is the simplest baseline because it removes the local wireless variable. If results still fail the provider’s latency or bandwidth target, changing Wi‑Fi settings will not solve the underlying route or service issue.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Wireless handheld or Portal
Use 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, confirm the device is actually on that band, and test in the room where you will play. A result next to the router does not represent performance at the other end of the home. If moving closer makes the session stable, improve placement or use a wired dock where practical before buying a different service plan.
Shared family connection
Measure while the normal household activities are running. If a backup or upload causes stutter, schedule it outside play time or pause it during sessions. There is no provider-published universal reserve percentage, so use observed performance rather than an invented margin.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can unlimited internet service guarantee smooth cloud gaming?
No. “Unlimited” generally describes data usage rather than latency or stability. The route to the provider, local congestion, Wi‑Fi conditions and simultaneous household traffic can still cause delay or dropped quality.
Is 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi acceptable for cloud gaming?
It may connect, but it is not the wireless band NVIDIA specifies for GeForce NOW; NVIDIA recommends 5 GHz. If 2.4 GHz is your only option, compare it directly with Ethernet or 5 GHz using the provider’s network test and watch for variation during play.
Should I replace my DNS server to reduce input lag?
There is no universal DNS setting established by the GeForce NOW or PlayStation requirements. DNS can affect how a service name resolves, but it does not automatically improve the latency of the game-stream path; keep your current DNS unless service-specific documentation or testing shows a reason to change it.

Can cloud gaming work while someone else is uploading files?
It can, but an upload-heavy task may consume the upstream capacity needed to maintain a session, especially where upload bandwidth is limited. Pause or schedule backups and large uploads, then retest before buying faster hardware.
Is 80 ms a universal maximum for every cloud-gaming service?
No. Less than 80 ms is NVIDIA’s stated latency requirement from an NVIDIA data center for GeForce NOW. It is not a universal limit or a guarantee for PlayStation or another provider.
Do I need 4K internet for every cloud game?
No. Match your connection with the mode you intend to use. NVIDIA lists separate targets from 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS through 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS, while PlayStation recommends 52 Mbps for 2160p. Lower-resolution modes have lower published targets.

Will a faster download plan fix controller delay?
Not necessarily. Delay depends on the route to the provider and local connection consistency as well as throughput. Test the provider-specific path, then compare Ethernet with 5 GHz Wi‑Fi before upgrading a plan.
Should I enable QoS or port forwarding for cloud gaming?
Only when the service or your own repeatable testing gives a specific reason. The documented GeForce NOW and PlayStation requirements do not establish universal QoS, port-forwarding, channel, DNS or bufferbloat values.
Can I use a mesh or extender for cloud gaming?
The published requirements do not specify a mesh or extender configuration. Test the actual device location with the provider’s network test. If an Ethernet connection is stable but the extended wireless path is not, use a wired connection or improve 5 GHz coverage rather than assuming any particular mesh setting is required.
Does PlayStation cloud streaming require more upload speed than download speed?
Sony states a minimum of 5 Mbps for both upload and download to establish a session. Its recommendations are listed by resolution, from 13 Mbps at 720p to 52 Mbps at 2160p.
