The Sonos Era 100 is the clearest place to start if you want a non-Apple speaker that works with Apple devices over AirPlay. But AirPlay playback does not make a speaker a HomePod: Sonos says Siri control runs through an iPhone or iPad and does not install Siri on the speaker. If you want a portable, multi-connection option, consider the JBL Authentics 300; if you are happy to use Alexa instead, consider the Amazon Echo Studio (2025).
What makes a speaker a HomePod alternative?
First decide whether you need to send audio from an Apple device or expect the speaker itself to provide hands-free Siri and Apple Home control. Those are different capabilities. AirPlay lets compatible Apple devices stream audio to a speaker; it does not, by itself, give that speaker Siri or native Apple Home behavior.

Sonos documents a newer Siri-enabled accessory setup, but it is a specific path with important limits: Apple’s guide applies to HomePod software version 27 or later, and Apple describes music and podcast playback on Siri-enabled accessories as a beta feature. That does not mean every AirPlay speaker supports this setup. Apple’s HomePod guide explains the version context and configuration.
Which alternatives are worth considering?
| Speaker | Best fit | Apple-device use | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonos Era 100 | A conventional home speaker and multiroom-oriented setup | AirPlay is the relevant Apple playback route. | Siri control is mediated by an iOS device; it does not add Siri to the speaker. |
| JBL Authentics 300 | Someone considering portability and multiple connection options | Current coverage lists AirPlay 2. | Confirm support for the exact model and configuration; do not assume HomePod-style hands-free Siri. |
| Amazon Echo Studio (2025) | Alexa users who also listen to Apple Music | Apple Music availability may fit an Apple listener’s services. | It is an Alexa alternative, not an AirPlay or Siri speaker on the evidence cited here. |
For a broader AirPlay shortlist, Macworld’s AirPlay speaker roundup includes the Era 100 and Authentics 300. What Hi-Fi?’s smart-speaker guide describes AirPlay 2 on the JBL alongside Chromecast and Spotify Connect. Treat these guides as starting points, then verify the current specifications for the particular product you plan to buy.

Sonos Era 100: the straightforward AirPlay choice
The Era 100 is a sensible first comparison if your priority is playing audio from Apple devices on a non-Apple home speaker, especially in a multiroom-oriented setup. Macworld includes it in its AirPlay speaker coverage.
Be precise about voice control. Sonos Support’s Siri instructions describe using Siri on an iPhone or iPad to control supported Sonos speakers. Sonos explicitly notes that this “will not add Siri to a voice-enabled Sonos product or let you control them directly within the Apple Home app.” In other words, an iOS-mediated command is not the same as speaking to a HomePod or adding the Sonos speaker to Apple Home as a Siri-enabled device.

JBL Authentics 300: consider it for portability and connections
The Authentics 300 is an alternative to investigate if portability and multiple ways to connect matter more to you than reproducing the HomePod experience. Macworld lists it among AirPlay speakers, and What Hi-Fi? identifies AirPlay 2 as one of its connectivity options.
Check the exact model and current support before purchasing. AirPlay 2 support establishes a way to stream from Apple devices; it does not establish built-in Siri or HomePod-equivalent voice control.

Amazon Echo Studio (2025): choose it only if Alexa suits you
The Echo Studio (2025) makes more sense for someone willing to use Alexa and Amazon’s smart-home ecosystem than for someone seeking a Siri replacement. Tom’s Guide’s review discusses its Alexa and smart-home features, while WIRED’s smart-speaker guide covers the wider category.
Apple Music compatibility on an Echo model is not proof of AirPlay support or Siri control. If you choose this speaker, do so because Alexa works for your household—not because it offers the same Apple integration as a HomePod.
Rank #4
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
How to choose for your room and routine
Compare the capabilities that matter to your setup rather than relying on a single “best” ranking. These speakers serve overlapping but not interchangeable roles, as broader guides such as RTINGS’ smart-speaker recommendations also illustrate.
- Apple-device playback: Confirm AirPlay support for the exact speaker. Check whether it is AirPlay or AirPlay 2 if that distinction matters to your setup.
- Hands-free voice control: Identify which assistant is built in, if any. Do not infer Siri from AirPlay support or Apple Music access.
- Streaming services: Check whether your preferred services work directly on the speaker or require streaming from a phone or tablet.
- Multiroom: Check how the speaker joins rooms and which devices or services can group it with other speakers.
- Portability: If you want to move a speaker between rooms or use it away from its usual spot, verify the exact model’s power and portability details.
- Smart home: Choose based on the ecosystem you intend to control. Alexa compatibility and Apple Home/Siri compatibility are not interchangeable.
- TV or stereo role: If the speaker must serve a television or a stereo setup, confirm that it supports that particular use rather than assuming a smart speaker can fill every audio role.
