Proton VPN is the most flexible Hide.me alternative for Android TV if you want a native app and the option to start free, but its free plan does not include streaming support. NordVPN is a straightforward choice for Android TV and Nvidia Shield owners because its support documentation covers direct installation. ExpressVPN is another native Android TV/Google TV candidate identified by current comparison publishers, although you should verify its present app and plan terms before subscribing.

What Hide.me provides as the baseline
Hide.me’s Android TV app is designed for television navigation and requires Android 7.0 or later. Its official feature description lists automatic reconnect, automatic server selection, split tunneling and a kill switch. It also describes streaming-optimized servers. Those are provider statements, not independent measurements of speed, reliability or access to a particular catalog.
Hide.me’s platform information includes Android, Amazon Fire OS, router platforms and media-box software. Its manual Android TV instructions recommend trying the Play Store first. If that installation fails, the documented fallback is to download the APK with a Downloader app, allow installation from an unknown source and complete the installation manually. Sideloading is a troubleshooting path, not a reason to bypass the normal app store when the store version works.
A TechRadar report dated October 22, 2026 said a recent Hide.me Android update added SmartGuard to the Android TV app. Because that report is secondary and does not expose a primary release note, check the installed version and official release notes before relying on SmartGuard as a deciding feature.

Choose an alternative by device first
Android TV and Google TV boxes
On a full Android TV or Android-based Google TV device, the simplest route is a native app from the device’s Play Store. This keeps login, server selection and reconnect controls on the television and avoids configuring every phone or laptop separately. Verify that the app appears for your model before paying; store visibility can differ by Android version, region and device certification.
Chromecast with Google TV
Proton VPN says its app works on Chromecast with Google TV and Android-based Google TV devices. Install the app on the Chromecast itself, rather than assuming that casting a VPN-protected phone will route the television’s own traffic through the VPN.

Cast-only Chromecast
A cast-only Chromecast does not provide the same Android TV app environment. Proton’s compatibility guidance says this type needs VPN installation on a router. That is a different project: the router must support the provider’s configuration method, and every device on the selected network may use the VPN unless the router offers policy controls.
Nvidia Shield
NordVPN’s support guide specifically covers Nvidia Shield and Android TV-based devices. Shield owners should use the documented Google Play or provider-site installation path, then confirm that the app’s navigation is usable with the Shield remote before changing advanced settings.

Android 7 hardware can run Hide.me according to its requirement. Proton’s normal Android TV build requires Android 8, although its Amazon Appstore build supports Android 7.1 and later. If your television is on Android 7.0, Proton may not be available through the standard build, so do not infer compatibility from the brand of the television alone.
Proton VPN: the clearest free-versus-streaming distinction
Proton VPN is the alternative with the most explicit qualification for viewers considering a no-cost plan. Protocols and television controls
Proton documents WireGuard over UDP and TCP and a Stealth protocol for Android TV. It also lists auto-connect and other Android TV settings. UDP is commonly chosen when responsiveness matters, TCP can be useful on networks that interfere with UDP, and Stealth is intended for networks where VPN traffic needs additional obfuscation. The presence of a protocol option does not prove that a particular streaming service will work from your location.

- On the Android TV or Google TV home screen, open the Google Play Store and search for Proton VPN.
- Confirm that the publisher and app listing match the provider, then install the current TV app.

- On the TV or Shield, open Google Play and search for the official NordVPN app.
- If the app is not offered for your device, consult NordVPN’s Android TV instructions for the website-based installation route and verify the APK source before installing.
- Open the installed app, sign in and use the remote to select a server.
- Enable any connection or auto-connect setting the current app exposes, then reconnect once to confirm that the setting persists after a reboot.
- Run a playback test with your own account and location. Do not treat a connection to a server as proof that every service will permit playback.
The cited NordVPN material establishes the supported device categories and installation methods, but it does not provide a comparable list of Android TV protocols, split-tunneling behavior or kill-switch controls. Check the current in-app settings if those features matter to you.
ExpressVPN: a third-party-listed native app to verify
Current Android TV comparison pages list ExpressVPN as a native Android TV/Google TV app. That is useful for creating a shortlist, but it is not the same level of evidence as a provider’s version-specific compatibility table. Use the Play Store route first. For Hide.me, the provider documents Downloader-based APK sideloading as a fallback: download the APK, permit installation from an unknown source and install it. Sideload only from the provider’s official distribution channel, disable the unknown-source permission afterward if your device allows it, and avoid random APK mirrors.

The VPN connects but video will not play
Confirm the plan requirement first, especially Proton’s paid-only streaming rule. Then try another server, restart the streaming app and check whether the service has changed its VPN policy. A different server can change the result, but no server choice guarantees access.
The remote cannot select controls
Make sure you installed the Android TV version rather than a phone-only package. Return to the provider’s TV app listing, update the app and reboot the device. If navigation remains poor, a router-level setup can protect the device without requiring constant on-screen interaction, provided your router supports it.
The connection drops after sleep
