The best OpenWrt router to buy is one whose exact model and hardware revision are supported by the current OpenWrt release, with an installation path you can follow and enough memory for your intended use. Check the device’s OpenWrt entry before comparing Wi-Fi generation, port count, or advertised features: none of those alone guarantees compatibility.

How to check whether a router supports OpenWrt

  1. Search the OpenWrt Table of Hardware for the precise product name and hardware revision—not just the brand or product family.
  2. Confirm the entry says the device is supported by the current release. Similar-looking revisions may use different hardware or require different firmware.
  3. Open the device-specific page and read its installation instructions before buying. Check which image type to use, whether the usual factory or sysupgrade process applies, and whether the procedure has special steps.
  4. Review listed limitations, unsupported features, and recovery or rescue options. A device’s advertised feature list does not establish that every feature works under OpenWrt.

OpenWrt’s buyer-oriented hardware views include the prompt “I want to buy a router that is supported.” Treat the views as a way to narrow candidates, then verify each candidate’s individual device page.

How much RAM and flash should an OpenWrt router have?

The OpenWrt project lists 8 MB of flash and 64 MB of RAM as minimums, and identifies 16 MB of flash and 128 MB of RAM as better levels. These are project capacity recommendations, not a performance benchmark or a guarantee that every package or workload will fit. OpenWrt warns: “DO NOT BUY DEVICES WITH 8MB FLASH / 64MB RAM if you intend to flash an up-to-date and secure OpenWrt version onto it!” See its supported-device guidance.

Do not assume all of a router’s listed flash can store packages. The Table of Hardware notes that package-available space can be significantly lower than total flash—for example, on devices with dual firmware. Check device-specific details if storage headroom matters.

Does Wi-Fi generation guarantee wireless support?

No. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) can help you find candidates if you need that standard, but it does not by itself establish OpenWrt compatibility, driver support, or that every radio feature works. OpenWrt’s Wi-Fi 6 hardware view provides a starting shortlist; inspect each device page for chipset-specific caveats and installation requirements.

OpenWrt flags limited supportability for Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets because free and open-source driver availability is limited. It also notes that some Wi-Fi 6 devices need a complex, nonstandard installation and that some USB 3.0 storage configurations may have 2.4 GHz problems. These are reasons to check the particular device and setup, not proof that every Broadcom or USB 3.0 device will fail.

Which ports and extra features should you check?

Choose ports to fit the network you are building. Compare Ethernet port count and speeds with your internet connection, wired devices, and any planned switches. Check for USB, PoE, SFP, or LTE only if your setup needs them. OpenWrt’s hardware views let you filter and review these capabilities; having one does not make a router more compatible by itself.

How to compare OpenWrt router candidates

Comparison point What to verify Why it matters
Model and revision Current-release support entry for the exact hardware version Prevents confusing a supported model with a similar unsupported revision.
Installation Required image type, sequence, and device-specific warnings Some devices require a nonstandard or more involved process.
Memory and storage Prefer 16 MB flash and 128 MB RAM; check usable package space Provides more headroom than minimum configurations, though capacity alone does not promise a particular workload will fit.
Wireless Radio bands, generation, chipset, and supported functions A Wi-Fi generation label does not confirm driver or feature support.
Wired and special ports Ethernet count and speed, plus any required USB, PoE, SFP, or LTE Matches the router to the actual WAN and LAN design.
Recovery Whether device documentation describes rescue or recovery Helps you understand available options if installation goes wrong.

What OpenWrt’s hardware lists cannot tell you

The official hardware references document support, device attributes, and installation considerations; they do not provide a universal performance ranking or head-to-head throughput results. They cannot establish which router is fastest for routing, Wi-Fi range, or VPN use. For those choices, look for model-specific testing that explains its setup rather than treating compatibility as a performance result.
