For most new builds, choose an ESP32-S3 running ESPHome. Use an integrated M5Stack Dial when you want the shortest path to a polished knob-and-screen controller. Choose an ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 with separate parts when the enclosure, encoder feel, display shape, or GPIO layout must be customized. Choose the larger M5Stack CoreS3 when album art, readable metadata, and touch controls matter more than a compact volume knob.

An I2S DAC is not needed when the device only sends commands to a network speaker or other Home Assistant media player. Add an I2S DAC and amplifier only when the ESP32 itself must render audio.

The recommended architecture

A DIY Home Assistant music controller is best treated as a networked control surface, not automatically as an audio player. The physical device reads an encoder, buttons, and touch input; ESPHome turns those inputs into entities and events; Home Assistant applies media-player actions; and the existing speaker or playback endpoint produces the sound.

ESPHome is a firmware generator and configuration system that turns supported microcontrollers into configurable smart-home devices. An ESP32-S3 connects to Home Assistant through the native API, so encoder turns, button presses, and display updates can be reflected with low practical latency on a local network. Home Assistant’s media_player integration supplies actions such as volume changes, play/pause, next, previous, shuffle, and grouping.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This separation keeps the hardware simple. A controller aimed at an existing Sonos, Music Assistant, Chromecast, or other network media player generally needs Wi-Fi, input devices, a display, and a stable power supply. It does not need an audio codec or speaker amplifier merely to issue commands.

When the ESP32 must produce sound

If the device itself must play a web stream or local media, use ESPHome’s I2S audio components and a suitable DAC or amplifier. The I2S component is ESP32-only. ESPHome documents an I2S media-player platform for playing media from web servers and web streams, with internal and external DAC arrangements; NS4168 and UDA1334A are examples of external devices. Select mono or stereo deliberately, and keep the I2S wiring short to reduce signal-integrity problems.

Why the ESP32-S3 is the safest default

The ESP32-S3 combines Wi-Fi with a broad set of peripherals and is the processor family used by both the M5Stack Dial and CoreS3. M5Stack lists the Dial’s ESP32-S3FN8 as a dual-core LX7 device at 240 MHz with 8 MB of flash. Espressif describes the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 as an entry-level board based on ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, with its pins exposed for breadboards and jumper wires.

For a new ESPHome project, that gives you a current, well-supported starting point without locking you into a single enclosure. Check the ESPHome release you plan to use before ordering: component support, board definitions, display drivers, and pin mappings can change between releases.

What the controller does not need

  • It does not need a high-power processor to send volume and transport commands.
  • It does not need a DAC when another network device is the audio endpoint.
  • It does not need a large flash chip for a simple controller, although integrated boards may include one for their broader feature set.
  • It does not need a touchscreen if a physical encoder and one or two buttons provide the interaction you want.

Integrated option: M5Stack Dial

The M5Stack Dial is the easiest route to a compact, knob-first controller because the microcontroller, rotary encoder, display, touch controller, and supporting hardware arrive on one board. M5Stack’s current specifications list an ESP32-S3FN8 dual-core LX7 at 240 MHz, 8 MB of flash, a 1.28-inch 240×240 GC9A01 TFT, FT3267 touch, 16 detents and 64 pulses per encoder revolution, USB-C 5 V input, a rear 6–36 V terminal, a battery connector, and PORT.A and PORT.B expansion.

The board also includes a push button, buzzer, RFID reader, and real-time clock. Those extras are useful if the controller may later become a scene selector, room terminal, or presence-aware interface, but they are not required for media control.

Why choose it

  • The encoder and display are mechanically aligned and electrically integrated.
  • A round 240×240 screen suits volume, playback state, source, and a small amount of metadata.
  • There is less risk of choosing incompatible display voltage, touch-controller, or connector parts.
  • The built-in button gives you a natural play/pause or mode action without adding a separate switch.

Limitations to plan around

A 1.28-inch round display cannot show long titles, playlists, and multiple touch targets as comfortably as a rectangular screen. The integrated pinout and enclosure geometry also limit how far you can move the display or substitute a different encoder. Confirm the board revision and its ESPHome device definition before flashing; similarly named revisions can have different pins or peripherals.

Modular option: ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1

Use the ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 when the physical design matters as much as the firmware. Espressif exposes the board’s pins for breadboard and jumper wiring, allowing you to pair it with a panel-mounted EC11-style quadrature encoder, a display selected for the enclosure, and an optional audio board.

Recommended modular parts

  • Microcontroller: ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1.
  • Encoder: A detented quadrature encoder with A and B outputs plus an integrated momentary push switch.
  • Display: A small SPI TFT for status, or a larger touch display when titles, artists, progress, and source selection must be readable at arm’s length.
  • Power: A regulated supply appropriate for the board and display, with a common ground and enough current headroom for Wi-Fi transmit bursts and backlight load.
  • Optional audio: An I2S DAC or amplifier module only if the ESP32 is the playback endpoint.

Advantages of the modular route

You can select the encoder’s shaft length, detent torque, resolution, and mounting thread; change the display without redesigning the whole controller; allocate GPIO around your enclosure; and replace an individual part if it fails. It is also easier to build a long, narrow wall panel or a controller with a display centered above a large metal knob.

Costs in complexity

Every separate module introduces another wiring and configuration decision. You must verify voltage levels, SPI chip-select lines, touch-controller pins, pull-ups, connector orientation, and physical clearance. Document your pin map before soldering, and leave at least one spare GPIO pair if you may add an IR receiver, status LED, or second button later.

Large-display option: M5Stack CoreS3

ESPHome documents the CoreS3 as an ESP32-S3 device with a 2.0-inch 320×240 IPS display, capacitive touch, a speaker amplifier, microphone codec, microSD storage, and Grove/M-Bus ports. The larger rectangular screen is better for album art, title and artist text, progress information, and touch targets that must be tapped accurately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose CoreS3 when the controller is intended to show more than a glanceable state. It is less compelling for a single-room volume panel where one physical knob and a small screen are all that is needed. Its amplifier and microphone codec also do not by themselves eliminate the need to design the correct audio path or to configure ESPHome’s supported components.

Choosing the rotary encoder

A quadrature encoder is the most useful physical input for media control. Turning it produces two phase-shifted digital signals, allowing firmware to determine direction; pressing the shaft closes a separate momentary switch. One control can therefore handle volume, menu navigation, and a primary action such as play/pause.

Detents and pulses

Detents are the tactile clicks you feel. Pulses are the electrical transitions the firmware counts. The M5Stack Dial is specified at 16 detents and 64 pulses per revolution, so the software must translate its pulse count into a comfortable volume step. A separate EC11-style encoder may have a different relationship between detents and transitions. Do not copy the Dial’s resolution into a modular build without checking the encoder’s datasheet and testing a full turn.

Map actions before wiring

  • Turn: Adjust volume of the selected Home Assistant media player.
  • Press: Toggle play/pause.
  • Short press after a mode change: Confirm a source or room selection.
  • Long press: Optional mute, source cycling, or group control.
  • Touch: Optional direct controls for next, previous, shuffle, or favorite sources.

Debounce and direction

Mechanical encoders can bounce, producing extra counts or occasional reversals. Set a debounce strategy in ESPHome or in the input circuit, then test with the encoder mounted in its final enclosure. Verify that clockwise increases volume and counter-clockwise decreases it; swapping A and B reverses the direction. The ESPHome rotary-encoder example with separate A and B pins and a GPIO button is a reference configuration, not a guarantee for every encoder module.

Electrical details

Use the board’s documented GPIO capabilities and pull-up requirements. Keep encoder wires short where possible, route them away from noisy power or I2S lines, and provide a common ground. If a long front-panel harness is unavoidable, test for false counts with Wi-Fi active and the display backlight at full brightness.

Choosing the display

1.28-inch round touch display

A 1.28-inch 240×240 round screen, such as the GC9A01 and FT3267 combination in the M5Stack Dial, is ideal for a compact, visually distinctive controller. It can show volume, playback state, a short title, a source icon, and a progress ring without dominating a bedside table or wall panel.

2.0-inch 320×240 touch display

A 2.0-inch 320×240 display gives text and touch controls more room. It is a better fit for album art, title and artist lines, progress, room names, and larger next/previous or shuffle buttons. The CoreS3 documents this class of hardware as an integrated option.

Separate SPI display

A separate SPI display is the most adaptable choice for a custom enclosure. Select the aspect ratio and viewing angle first, then verify the controller, voltage, backlight current, touch interface, and available chip-select and data pins. A replaceable display can be a significant maintenance advantage if the panel may be exposed to sunlight, kitchen grease, or frequent handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should be visible at a glance

  • Selected room or player.
  • Current volume and mute state.
  • Play/pause state.
  • A short, truncated title or artist line.
  • Connection or unavailable status.

A display should not become a miniature phone interface unless the enclosure and interaction model justify it. If users must read long metadata, browse playlists, and select among many rooms, prioritize screen area and touch accuracy over a tiny round panel.

Do you need an I2S DAC?

Requirement DAC decision Reason
Control an existing network speaker or media player No DAC The ESP32 sends Home Assistant commands; another device renders the audio.
Play a web stream from the ESP32 to a local speaker Yes, use I2S audio hardware The ESP32 needs a digital-to-analog path and usually an amplifier or powered speaker stage.
Play local media through an attached amplifier Yes, unless the amplifier accepts a compatible digital interface directly The output chain must convert the ESP32’s audio stream into the amplifier’s required signal.

ESPHome’s I2S media-player platform supports internal or external DAC arrangements and documents NS4168 and UDA1334A as external examples. Decide between mono and stereo based on the speaker arrangement, not on the controller’s appearance. Keep I2S clock, word-select, and data wiring short; long unshielded runs can cause clicks, dropouts, or unreliable startup.

Build plan for a control-only controller

  1. Choose the endpoint first. Confirm that Home Assistant can already control the target media player, including volume and transport actions.
  2. Select the board. Pick M5Stack Dial for an integrated knob, ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 for a custom panel, or CoreS3 for a larger touch interface.
  3. Define the interaction map. Write down what turn, press, long press, and each touch target should do before assigning pins.
  4. Record the pin map. Note encoder A, encoder B, encoder switch, display bus, touch interrupt or I2C lines, status LEDs, and spare GPIOs.
  5. Install ESPHome and add the device to Home Assistant. Use the board definition matching the exact hardware and the ESPHome release you intend to run.
  6. Bring up inputs first. Confirm encoder direction, one count per intended step, switch debounce, and reliable Wi-Fi before adding screen rendering.
  7. Add media-player actions. Connect the controller’s entities or events to volume, play/pause, next, previous, mute, shuffle, and grouping actions in Home Assistant.
  8. Add display state. Show the selected player, volume, playback state, and a short metadata line; define an explicit unavailable or reconnecting screen.
  9. Mount and retest. Test with the encoder tightened in its final panel, the display at its final viewing angle, and the power cable routed as it will be installed.

Firmware and Home Assistant design

Keep hardware events separate from media-player policy. The ESPHome device should expose a stable encoder value, button events, and display controls. Home Assistant should decide which player is selected, how volume is scaled, and what happens when a room is unavailable. This separation lets you change the target speaker without rewriting the low-level input firmware.

Volume scaling

Home Assistant media players normally represent volume as a normalized value, while a user expects a predictable change per detent. Choose a step size that feels deliberate, clamp the result to the valid range, and avoid sending a service call for every electrical pulse if that produces a flood of updates. The exact step should be tuned with the encoder’s detent-to-pulse ratio and the room’s acoustics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

State feedback

Update the screen from the media player’s actual state rather than assuming every command succeeded. If the player is unavailable, show that condition and avoid presenting stale volume as current. When a network reconnect occurs, refresh the selected player and redraw the display so the controller does not remain on an obsolete track.

Version and revision checks

Before flashing, verify the board revision, ESPHome device page, GPIO assignments, and Home Assistant integration behavior for the versions you are installing. A configuration copied from an older example may compile while addressing a changed peripheral or an incompatible pin.

Power, enclosure, and installation decisions

Power

USB-C is convenient for a desktop controller. A wall-mounted unit may use a regulated low-voltage supply, but the connector, cable gauge, polarity, and strain relief must match the board. The M5Stack Dial documentation lists USB-C 5 V input and a rear 6–36 V terminal; do not assume every input accepts the same voltage or that a terminal connection is safe without checking the exact revision.

Thermal and mechanical clearance

Leave room behind a panel encoder for its body and wiring. Keep the ESP32 antenna away from large metal surfaces and dense bundles of power wires. Avoid pressing a display against the enclosure window, and provide a service path for firmware updates or replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Human factors

A heavy, well-damped knob feels more precise than a light encoder with loose detents. Place the display where glare does not hide the volume value, and make the most common action possible without looking. A single push-to-play/pause pattern is easy to remember; long-press actions should be optional because they are harder to discover.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Volume moves several steps per click Pulse resolution and software step size do not match, or the switch is bouncing Check the encoder’s detent/pulse specification, adjust resolution and debounce, and retest after mounting.
Volume direction is backwards Encoder A and B are reversed Swap A and B in the wiring or configuration.
Button presses are duplicated Mechanical bounce or an overly sensitive event trigger Add debounce and require a stable press/release transition.
Display works but touch does not Touch controller pins, address, or board revision mismatch Verify the exact display and touch definition, I2C wiring, pull-ups, and revision-specific pin map.
Controller shows stale playback Screen is displaying the last command rather than media-player state Drive rendering from Home Assistant state updates and add an unavailable/reconnect screen.
Audio clicks or drops out Long or noisy I2S wiring, inadequate power, or an incorrect DAC configuration Shorten I2S leads, improve grounding and power headroom, and verify mono/stereo and DAC settings.
Device repeatedly reconnects Weak Wi-Fi, marginal supply, or excessive startup load from display and audio hardware Test with a known-good supply, improve antenna placement, and bring peripherals up one at a time.

Which hardware should you buy?

Choose M5Stack Dial if

  • You want a compact volume and transport controller with minimal wiring.
  • A round 1.28-inch display is sufficient for short metadata and status.
  • You value an integrated encoder, touch surface, buzzer, and expansion hardware.
  • You are willing to verify the exact board revision before installation.

Choose ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 if

  • Your enclosure requires a particular aspect ratio, shaft length, or knob feel.
  • You want replaceable display and encoder modules.
  • You need to reserve GPIO for sensors, LEDs, or future controls.
  • You are comfortable documenting wiring and tuning ESPHome pin configuration.

Choose M5Stack CoreS3 if

  • Users must read titles, artists, progress, or room names from a larger screen.
  • Touch navigation is more important than a minimal knob-first interface.
  • You may use the integrated amplifier, microphone codec, storage, or expansion ports.
  • The larger physical footprint fits the installation.

Final selection checklist

  • Confirm the target Home Assistant media player and required actions.
  • Decide whether the ESP32 is only a controller or also an audio endpoint.
  • Choose integrated hardware or a modular enclosure before assigning GPIO.
  • Verify encoder detents, pulses per revolution, switch behavior, and shaft dimensions.
  • Choose display size from viewing distance and metadata needs, not appearance alone.
  • Check the exact board revision and matching ESPHome device definition.
  • Plan power, antenna clearance, cable routing, and service access.
  • Test input debounce, direction, state feedback, and reconnection behavior in the final enclosure.
