There is no one-for-one Google Maps replacement that is best for every phone, journey, or destination. Apple Maps is the most natural first choice for many iPhone users; Organic Maps and OsmAnd are worth comparing for offline OpenStreetMap-based navigation; HERE WeGo is another option for offline driving and travel. Waze focuses on live driver reports but is owned by Google. For transit, cycling, and hiking, specialist apps such as Citymapper, Komoot, and AllTrails may fit better. Before switching, check coverage, route features, offline behavior, and place listings in the specific areas you use.
How to choose a Google Maps alternative
Start with the job you need the app to do, rather than looking for a single winner. An app that works well for offline driving may not offer the live traffic reports or local business information you depend on. The comparisons below are not controlled tests of route accuracy, and availability and features can change by country and app version.
- Phone and car integration: Confirm that the app supports your device and the display or in-car system you use. Apple Maps is especially relevant if you use Apple devices.
- Travel mode: Check driving, walking, cycling, public transit, and outdoor routes separately. Specialist apps may be stronger for one activity and unsuitable for another.
- Offline use: Find out whether you can download the required area and whether navigation and search work without a connection. Download maps in advance and make sure the download finishes.
- Live conditions: Offline maps do not automatically provide live traffic or crowd-sourced incident reports.
- Place discovery: Test the businesses and places you actually need. Compare listings, opening hours, reviews, entrances, and local search results; the evidence available does not establish that any alternative universally matches Google’s place database.
- Privacy and local availability: Read the app’s current privacy disclosure and confirm that its features are available in your destination.
Alternatives by what you need
| Need | Apps to consider | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone integration | Apple Maps | A direct ecosystem option. Its privacy practices include collection of some search, interaction, and route information; it should not be described as data-free. |
| Offline navigation with a privacy-conscious approach | Organic Maps | Privacy Guides describes it as open-source, community-developed, based on OpenStreetMap, and usable offline for walking, driving, and cycling. It does not provide real-time traffic, satellite imagery, or street-view imagery. |
| Configurable offline mapping | OsmAnd | Privacy Guides describes offline OpenStreetMap-based navigation for walking, cycling, driving, and public transit. Check that its feature depth and availability meet your particular needs. |
| Offline driving and travel | HERE WeGo | Editorial comparisons identify offline maps and driving as a use case. Confirm regional downloads and route features before depending on it for a trip. |
| Live driver reports | Waze | Focused on traffic and incident reports. Google owns Waze, so it is not a fit if your goal is to leave Google’s services. |
| Transit, cycling, or hiking | Citymapper, Komoot, AllTrails | These are examples of specialist apps; coverage depends on the region and activity. |
| Destinations with strong local mapping services | NAVER Map, KakaoMap, TMAP, Amap, and others | Local services may be more relevant in some destinations. Apple’s 2022 report cited popular services in Korea and China; check current availability for your trip. |
What to know about privacy
Apple Maps
Apple’s Maps privacy disclosure says information sent to Apple can include request time, device and software details, language, authorized location, map boundaries, search terms, viewed places, and interactions. For directions, route details can include origin or current location when authorized, destination, transport mode, and a random identifier for the navigation session.
Apple says usage metrics use identifiers that rotate multiple times an hour and are not tied to an Apple Account. Some personalization happens on-device, while preferred and predicted route geometry may be sent to Apple for particular features. If permission is granted, contextual Maps ads may use current search terms, the map view, and approximate location; Apple says location is not shared with advertisers. In China, Apple says Maps uses mapping services from Amap Software Co., Ltd., so service and privacy behavior can differ by market.

Organic Maps and OsmAnd
Privacy Guides recommends Organic Maps and OsmAnd based on their published privacy positioning. That is the guide’s assessment, not a guarantee that any product’s privacy policy is followed in practice. Review each provider’s current policy before deciding what level of data collection you are comfortable with.
Check the destination before you switch
- Choose a real test area: Search for the neighborhood, town, or rural area where you most often travel, not just your home address.
- Try your usual routes and modes: Compare the driving, walking, cycling, or transit routes you actually need, and check whether the app provides relevant traffic or incident information.
- Verify places you rely on: Search for specific businesses and inspect hours, entrance locations, and other details that matter for arriving successfully.
- Test offline before you leave: Download the relevant map area on a connection, confirm the download completed, then check the app’s navigation and search behavior without a connection.
- Confirm local support: Check that the app and the features you need are available for your phone and destination.
If you use phone-based turn-by-turn directions in a car, an adjustable car phone mount can be a practical optional accessory; it is not required to use these apps.

Why there is no universal winner
Place databases, routing, offline coverage, live reports, and regional availability are different strengths, not one interchangeable feature set. Apple’s 2022 report, using data.ai estimates for July 2020–June 2021, put Google Maps at 88 million and Waze at 13 million daily active iPhone users, compared with 34 million for Apple Maps. These are historical iPhone estimates, not current global user counts or 2026 market share. The same report found Apple Maps’ share among top mapping apps ranged from 16% in Japan to 36% in the US for the countries and historical period it examined. Those figures illustrate the regional nature of mapping choices; they do not establish which app is best for an individual journey.
