If what you miss about GoldenEye 007 is choosing how to tackle objectives, start with Deus Ex. For guarded corridors and careful sneaking, try Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell; for classic first-person campaign action, look at Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Far Cry. There is no single modern PC game here that reproduces every part of GoldenEye: the best fit depends on whether you want mission freedom, stealth, old-school shooting, or Bond-flavored espionage.

Which GoldenEye quality do you want back?

“Like GoldenEye” can mean several things: first-person gunplay, missions with objectives beyond clearing enemies, the option to sneak or fight, a spy setting, or multiplayer. These recommendations match different parts of that mix rather than offering mechanically identical substitutes. Store listings establish that titles appear in a catalogue; the comparisons below are about their likely appeal, not an objective equivalence.

  • Mission freedom: choose Deus Ex for open-ended approaches, including stealth and direct combat.
  • Espionage stealth: choose Splinter Cell if slipping past guards matters more than having an all-round shooter.
  • Classic first-person campaigns: consider Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Far Cry for older FPS action, with different settings and mission designs.
  • Modern Bond atmosphere: consider 007 First Light, while expecting a different perspective and action-adventure structure.
  • The original game on PC: a community port project exists, but it is pre-1.0 and requires a compatible ROM supplied by the player.

Best PC games like GoldenEye 007, by player priority

Best match Why it may scratch the itch Main difference PC-store or platform caveat
Deus Ex Offers stealth and FPS-style play, with open-ended ways to approach missions. Its appeal is flexible mission approach, not Bond’s setting or identical gunplay. Listed in GOG’s stealth and FPS catalogues; those catalogues are not per-title compatibility reports. Check the individual listing for current OS and requirements. GOG stealth catalogue; GOG FPS catalogue.
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell A strong choice for sneaking through guarded spaces and a distinctly espionage-centered mood. It is stealth-focused, not a GoldenEye-style all-round shooter. Listed in GOG’s stealth catalogue; verify the individual title page for current availability and compatibility. GOG stealth catalogue.
XIII A stylized shooter option for players who want a distinctive presentation. The match is stylistic rather than a close mechanical duplicate of GoldenEye. Listed in GOG’s stealth catalogue; verify the individual title page for current availability and compatibility. GOG stealth catalogue.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein Fits players who mainly want an older first-person campaign. Its setting and mission design differ from GoldenEye’s spy objectives. Listed in GOG’s FPS catalogue, which is not a per-title compatibility report. Check its current individual listing before buying. GOG FPS catalogue.
Far Cry Another option when classic PC first-person campaign action is the priority. It has a different setting and mission design from GoldenEye. Listed in GOG’s FPS catalogue; check the individual listing for current availability and requirements. GOG FPS catalogue.
007 First Light Offers Bond and modern espionage flavor, with stealth and shooter descriptors on its Steam listing. It is described as an action-adventure/third-person shooter experience, not a classic first-person objective shooter. Steam lists a May 26, 2026 release date. Check the current listing for availability, region, and system requirements. Steam listing.

How the recommendations compare with GoldenEye

For flexible objectives: Deus Ex

Choose Deus Ex if the memorable part of GoldenEye was working out how to reach an objective, not simply shooting through a level. Its stealth and FPS catalogue listings make it a useful starting point for players who want more than one approach. The trade-off is that this is a recommendation for mission flexibility, not for Bond presentation or a recreation of GoldenEye’s gunplay.

For stealth-first espionage: Splinter Cell

Splinter Cell is the more focused choice if you enjoyed staying out of sight and moving through guarded areas. It is best understood as a stealth alternative: choose it for that specific tension, not if you want the same balance of sneaking and direct first-person action as GoldenEye.

#1 Best Overall
GoldenEye 007 (Renewed)
  • This authentic renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only.
  • It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
  • This game is an authentic copy.

For a stylized shooter: XIII

XIII is worth considering when visual style is part of what you want from a shooter. Its appearance in GOG’s stealth catalogue does not make it a close gameplay match, so treat it as a different-flavored PC shooter rather than a substitute for GoldenEye’s mission design.

For older first-person campaign pacing: Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Far Cry

These GOG-listed FPS choices make more sense if the first-person campaign feel matters most. Neither is a spy-themed match, and their settings and mission designs differ. They are alternatives for a preference—older FPS campaign action—not for every feature of GoldenEye.

For modern Bond: 007 First Light

007 First Light is the franchise pick for readers drawn to espionage and Bond rather than the original game’s exact structure. Steam’s listing describes it with espionage, stealth, and shooter tags, but also classifies it as an action-adventure/third-person shooter experience. That makes it a looser match for a player specifically seeking first-person, objective-led shooting.

PC availability: official listings, a console comparison, and the original game

Perfect Dark is a comparison, not a native-PC recommendation from the cited listing

Perfect Dark is a natural historical comparison to GoldenEye, but the official Xbox listing names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It does not establish a native PC release. Check the listing for supported platforms rather than assuming the game is available as a PC download. Xbox Perfect Dark listing.

A community GoldenEye PC port exists, with important conditions

The GoldenEye 007 PC Port project describes itself as “GoldenEye 007 (Nintendo 64, 1997) on the PC — decompiled, ported, and playable at 60 fps.” That is the project’s own description, not an independent performance test or an official Nintendo or commercial-store release. Its v0.4.0 release is dated September 28, 2026, and the project says the complete single-player campaign is playable at 60 fps on Windows and Linux, including Steam Deck. The same documentation warns: “This is a pre-1.0 release, not a finished product.” Read the project documentation for current status and setup details.

The project requires the player to supply a compatible NTSC-U ROM; it does not distribute the ROM or game assets. It documents keyboard-and-mouse and controller input, so a controller is optional rather than required. This is a community project that involves user-supplied game data, not a turnkey store purchase.

Before buying: check the individual PC listing

Catalogue pages can indicate that a game is listed under a genre, but they do not confirm a particular title’s current compatibility or requirements. Store availability, supported operating systems, region, price, and input features can change. Confirm those details on the individual game page before purchasing, especially when choosing an older release.

People do ask for games that “capture the same magic” as GoldenEye; that is a useful description of a personal preference, not evidence that one game is a universal match. A community discussion reflects that kind of question, rather than a survey or consensus. Community discussion.
