For most serious Windows photo editing, start with Affinity by Canva. Its core application is currently free and provides the layers, masks, retouching, compositing, and design tools most people expect from a Photoshop replacement. Choose GIMP instead if you want a fully free, open-source editor with no Canva account; Paint.NET for simpler everyday Windows edits; Photopea for browser-based PSD work; and darktable or RawTherapee for RAW photography.

There is no single best free editor for every Windows workflow. Editing a JPEG, developing a camera RAW file, managing thousands of photographs, and opening a layered PSD are different jobs. The recommendations below separate those jobs so you can install the right tool rather than a famous program that does not fit your files or working style.

Version note: Software versions change frequently. The version numbers and feature details below reflect the official release information in the current research snapshot. Use the linked official download pages to check the latest installer, Windows requirements, camera support, and licensing terms before installing.

Quick picks

  • Free and open source: GIMP, darktable, RawTherapee, digiKam, and Krita. These are the clearest choices if you want software that is not based on a trial or recurring subscription.
  • Free proprietary desktop software: Paint.NET Classic. The application is free to download from the official site, while its Microsoft Store edition is paid.
  • Free proprietary software that requires an account: Affinity by Canva. The core application is currently free to use, but access is linked to a Canva ID.
  • Free browser software supported by advertising: Photopea. The core editor remains available without payment, while Premium mainly removes advertising and adds account-related benefits.
  • Free tier with limits: Adobe Express and similar services may restrict assets, storage, credits, or certain AI features. A free account is not the same as a fully free editor.
  • Included Windows utility: Microsoft Photos is available as part of the Windows software ecosystem, although specific features can vary by Windows version and hardware.

A seven-day trial, a watermarked export plan, or a free account that locks the essential editor behind payment should not be described as equivalent to GIMP or Paint.NET Classic.

Choose according to the file and the job

JPEG and PNG editing

For ordinary phone pictures, screenshots, and downloaded images, use a raster editor such as Affinity, GIMP, Paint.NET, Photopea, or Microsoft Photos. These programs are suited to cropping, resizing, retouching, selections, text, layers, filters, and compositing.

A JPEG is already processed and compressed by the camera or phone. You can edit it effectively, but repeated JPEG exports can introduce additional compression loss. PNG is useful when transparency or lossless export matters, but it is not automatically the best format for a photographic master.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RAW photography

A camera RAW file is not simply a higher-quality JPEG. It contains sensor data that must be demosaiced and interpreted before it becomes a viewable image. A RAW developer can adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, noise, lens correction, and color while retaining more flexibility than an ordinary JPEG workflow.

For RAW files, start with darktable or RawTherapee. GIMP, Paint.NET, and Photopea may open some camera formats or rely on supporting components, but they should not automatically be treated as complete Lightroom replacements. Camera-model support changes, so check your exact camera before committing to a RAW workflow.

Photo editing versus photo management

Editing means layers, masks, retouching, selections, curves, filters, and compositing. Developing means demosaicing and adjusting RAW data. Managing means importing, cataloging, tagging, rating, searching, recognizing faces, and preserving metadata. Batch processing means applying a defined operation or recipe to many files.

Affinity and GIMP are stronger creative editors than catalog managers. darktable and digiKam are better for organizing a large collection. RawTherapee is a specialist developer rather than a general-purpose editor. This distinction is why a two-application workflow is often better than searching for one program that does everything.

1. Affinity by Canva: best overall for serious editing

Canva launched the all-new Affinity on October 29, 2025, combining photo editing, vector design, and page layout in one application. Its core product is currently free to use, making it the most important change in the Windows free-editor market. The official launch announcement describes the unified application and its free availability.

For a user replacing Photoshop, Affinity is the strongest general recommendation when the work involves:

  • Multiple layers and layer masks.
  • Selections, retouching, cloning, and healing.
  • Compositing several photographs.
  • Text, vector shapes, and design elements.
  • Non-destructive adjustments and professional color workflows.
  • Moving between photo editing, vector artwork, and page-layout tasks.

How to start

  1. Download the Windows installer from the official Affinity site.
  2. Install and launch Affinity.
  3. Sign in with a Canva ID.
  4. Choose the Pixel tools or photo-editing workspace for raster editing.
  5. Save the native Affinity project before exporting a JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or other delivery file.

Important free-use caveats

Affinity is free to use, but it is not open source and it is not account-free. The Affinity additional terms link the license to a Canva account and allow online entitlement verification. Some features can depend on the user’s subscription type or require additional payment.

That means you should not describe Affinity as an account-free application, a perpetual ownership purchase, or software in which every AI feature is guaranteed to be free. Canva says that Affinity stores work locally on the device and that Affinity content is not used to train Canva AI features; those statements should still be distinguished from optional Canva-connected services and AI features. See Canva’s explanation of local storage and AI data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Affinity is also not a full Lightroom-style photo catalog. It can be an excellent editor without being the best tool for importing, rating, searching, and managing tens of thousands of photographs.

Choose Affinity if: you want the closest general free alternative to a professional layer-based editor and are comfortable using a Canva account.

Choose something else if: you require open-source licensing, no vendor account, a dedicated RAW catalog, or guaranteed fully offline access without entitlement checks.

2. GIMP: best fully free and open-source desktop editor

GIMP remains the best open-source general-purpose Photoshop alternative. It is GPL-licensed, available for Windows, and provides layers, channels, alpha transparency, transformations, selections, scripting, plug-ins, multiple undo and redo, and support for common formats including JPEG, PNG, PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, DDS, and PDF. Its official manual documents the program’s capabilities, licensing, and format support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official Windows archive lists GIMP 3.0.8, with the Windows installer dated February 7, 2026. Check the official Windows download directory rather than relying on an old third-party mirror.

Why GIMP is still a strong choice

  • No Canva or Adobe account is required to use the desktop editor.
  • It is suitable for complex selections, masks, photo compositing, retouching, and layer-based designs.
  • Plug-ins and scripting make it extensible for advanced users.
  • GIMP 3.0 introduced non-destructive filters for many commonly used filters, updated interface and scaling behavior, and improved PSD and other format support. See the GIMP 3.0 release notes.
  • It is a sensible choice for users who want local desktop software and an open-source license.

Where GIMP can disappoint

GIMP is powerful but less immediately approachable than Paint.NET or Affinity. Menus, panels, selections, masks, and tool options can feel unfamiliar to a beginner. Many tutorials and plug-ins still refer to GIMP 2.10, so a tutorial may not match GIMP 3 exactly. Older plug-ins may also need updating or may not work correctly.

GIMP should not be sold as a complete Lightroom replacement. A serious photographer may still want darktable or RawTherapee for RAW development, cataloging, and non-destructive camera workflows before opening the result in GIMP.

PSD compatibility is useful but not perfect. A PSD can open while losing or changing a smart object, adjustment layer, font, plug-in effect, blending behavior, or other Photoshop-specific feature. Keep the original PSD and test an important project before changing your production workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose GIMP if: you want a capable open-source editor, no subscription, no Canva account, and a local application with layers and extensibility.

Choose Affinity instead if: you prefer a more modern professional workflow and do not object to the account-linked model.

3. Paint.NET: best for simple native Windows editing

Paint.NET is more than an upgraded version of Microsoft Paint. Its current feature set includes layers, blend modes, layer transparency, a tabbed multi-image interface, a history window, color management, selections, clone stamp, curves, levels, red-eye removal, sharpening, noise reduction, pressure-sensitive tablet support, and a multithreaded rendering engine. The official feature page provides the detailed list.

The official download page lists Paint.NET 5.1.12, dated March 8, 2026. The free Classic desktop edition is downloaded from the Paint.NET website. The Microsoft Store edition is paid, but the official license FAQ says the functionality is the same and the Store version adds conveniences such as automatic updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Paint.NET is good at

  • Cropping, straightening, resizing, and format conversion.
  • Quick color corrections, curves, levels, sharpening, and noise reduction.
  • Screenshot annotations and simple graphics.
  • Selections, clone-stamp work, and basic retouching.
  • Simple composites using layers and blend modes.
  • Everyday edits for people who find GIMP overwhelming.

Paint.NET supports PNG, JPEG, JPEG XL, AVIF, HEIC, WebP, JPEG XR, BMP, GIF, TIFF, DDS, TGA, and its native PDN project format, although support for some advanced file types or workflows may require third-party plug-ins. Its history is session-based: closing the image or application clears that editing history, so history should not be mistaken for a persistent non-destructive edit recipe. The main-window documentation explains this limitation.

Requirements and licensing

Paint.NET 5 requires Windows 10 version 21H2 or newer, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2022; a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor; at least four CPU cores; and a Direct3D 11-capable GPU. It includes .NET 9, so a separate .NET installation is not required. See the current requirements before installing.

The Classic edition can be used personally, commercially, academically, by businesses, by government users, and by nonprofit organizations under the terms described in the Paint.NET license FAQ.

Choose Paint.NET if: you want a straightforward, Windows-native editor for JPEGs, screenshots, basic retouching, layers, and quick exports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose it as your only tool if: you need a complete RAW workflow, a large catalog, sophisticated Photoshop interchange, or highly complex compositing.

4. Photopea: best browser-based Photoshop-style editor

Photopea is the best option when you cannot or do not want to install software. It runs in a modern browser, supports raster and vector graphics, works with 8-, 16-, and 32-bit color depth and multiple color spaces, and uses PSD as its main editable document format. The Photopea introduction and file-opening guide document these capabilities.

Basic workflow

  1. Open Photopea in the browser.
  2. Choose File → Open, or drag a file from Windows Explorer into the browser window.
  3. Edit the image using layers, selections, masks, text, filters, and other tools.
  4. Use File → Save as PSD to keep an editable project.
  5. Use File → Export As → PNG/JPG/etc. to create a delivery file.

Photopea is especially useful for opening and saving PSD files on a computer without Photoshop. Compatibility is not identical to Photoshop compatibility: fonts, smart objects, adjustment layers, plug-ins, effects, linked assets, masks, and blending behavior can still differ. Test a representative project before promising a client that a PSD will round-trip perfectly.

Privacy and offline behavior

Photopea states in its documentation and privacy policy that files opened in the editor are processed on the device and do not leave it. After the web application has loaded, it can continue working offline. This is different from saying that no network connection is ever involved: the editor must initially load, browser extensions or corporate policies can block scripts, and optional cloud-storage access is a separate feature.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free version is supported by advertising. According to Photopea’s account and Premium information, Premium primarily removes advertisements and provides account-related benefits rather than locking the entire core editor behind payment.

Save early and save locally. If you close the browser tab before saving, unsaved work can be lost. Large PSD files and high-resolution photographs can also run into browser memory limits, particularly when several documents are open.

Choose Photopea if: you need PSD support, no installation, a familiar Photoshop-style interface, or an occasional editor on a school, work, or borrowed Windows computer.

5. RAW photography: darktable versus RawTherapee

RAW development is a separate discipline from layer-based photo compositing. Both darktable and RawTherapee can give photographers more control over camera data than a basic image editor, but their workflows are more technical than Paint.NET or Microsoft Photos.

darktable: best free RAW and catalog workflow

darktable is the strongest free choice for photographers who need RAW development combined with catalog functions. It provides browsing, ratings, tags, metadata, batch processing, masks, and a non-destructive editing workflow. The official site lists darktable 5.6.0, released June 21, 2026, with Windows x64 and Windows-on-Arm installers. The 5.6.0 release announcement describes the current changes, including optional AI features, object masks, GPU-related setup improvements, and workflow updates.

darktable opens images read-only and records processing steps in its database and XMP sidecars, leaving the original RAW file untouched. You then export a rendered image for sharing or further editing. Its sidecar documentation explains this non-destructive model.

Basic darktable workflow

  1. Import photographs into darktable.
  2. Use lighttable to browse, rate, tag, and select images.
  3. Open the chosen image in darkroom.
  4. Adjust exposure, white balance, color, sharpening, noise, masks, lens corrections, and other modules.
  5. Open the export module.
  6. Set the target storage to file on disk.
  7. Choose JPEG for ordinary delivery or TIFF when continuing in a raster editor.
  8. Select Export. The official export workflow shows the relevant controls.

Back up the darktable library database and XMP files, and keep those sidecars with the corresponding RAW originals. Before a major-version migration, make a backup: the project warns that a newer library or configuration may not remain usable by an older version.

Choose darktable if: you photograph in RAW, want ratings and cataloging, need batch export, and are willing to learn a Lightroom-style workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose it as your only layer editor if: you regularly build composites, use extensive text and vector elements, or need a conventional Photoshop-style layer stack.

RawTherapee: best for detailed RAW control

RawTherapee is a powerful specialist RAW processor. The official download page lists RawTherapee 5.12, released May 28, 2025, with a Windows 64-bit build. It provides detailed control over demosaicing, exposure, color, sharpening, noise reduction, lens correction, camera profiles, selective editing, and batch processing.

RawTherapee uses processing profiles and sidecar files, allowing the original RAW to remain unchanged while instructions describe how it should be rendered. Its editor documentation explains the processing-profile approach. Its file-browser-oriented workflow can suit photographers who prefer working directly with folders rather than maintaining a catalog database.

RawTherapee is not the easiest recommendation for a casual user asking how to crop a holiday photograph. Its strength is technical control, not a beginner-friendly general editing experience. For layers or compositing, export the developed image to GIMP, Affinity, Krita, or Photopea.

6. Microsoft Photos, digiKam, Krita, and Adobe Express Photos

Microsoft Photos: best for immediate basic edits

Many Windows users do not need to install anything for a crop, rotation, filter, or small correction. Microsoft documents this path:

  1. Search for Photos from the Windows taskbar.
  2. Open the image.
  3. Select Edit image, or press Ctrl + E.
  4. Choose Crop, Adjustment, Filter, Markup, or Background.
  5. Use Save as Copy when preserving the original matters.

Depending on Windows version and hardware, Photos can blur, remove, or replace a background and provide generative erase for unwanted objects. Microsoft says these AI operations are performed locally on the device, but feature availability varies, including by Copilot+ PC capabilities. See Microsoft’s Photos editing guide.

Photos is a convenient utility, not a replacement for Affinity, GIMP, Paint.NET, Photopea, or Krita when you need layers, a project file, sophisticated selections, a plug-in ecosystem, or a deep compositing workflow.

digiKam: best for organizing a large photo library

digiKam is an open-source photo manager with editing tools, RAW support through LibRaw, metadata handling, tags, ratings, advanced search, face recognition, batch processing, and plug-ins. The official features page describes it as a library-management application as much as an editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current stable release is listed as digiKam 9.1.0, released June 7, 2026. Its official Windows download supports 64-bit Windows 10 or later; check the download page for the current installer.

Use digiKam when the hard problem is finding and organizing photographs by date, camera, lens, location, rating, keyword, or face. Use Affinity or GIMP when the hard problem is building a layered composite. A practical combination is digiKam for the library and a separate editor for creative work.

Krita: best for digital painting and illustration

Krita is free and open source, but it is painting-first rather than photography-first. Its strengths include brush engines, stabilizers, vector and filter layers, animation, HDR painting, color management, and PSD support. Its official features page explains the intended workflow.

Krita is an excellent choice for painting over photographs, creating illustrations, concept art, or combining photographic elements with hand-drawn work. It is not the natural first choice for cataloging RAW photographs or developing hundreds of camera files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adobe Express Photos: best for screenshots and social content

Adobe Express Photos is a free Windows desktop app aimed at quick photo editing, screenshot capture, annotation, and integration with Adobe Express designs. It can be useful for social graphics, marked-up screenshots, and simple content creation, but it is not a full replacement for Photoshop or a dedicated RAW editor. The official product page describes its Windows features.

Some AI tools can use generative credits, and broader Express plans have their own asset, storage, and feature limits. Check the current free-plan details before choosing it for regular commercial production.

Which one should you install?

Use this decision tree:

  1. You need only a crop, rotation, filter, annotation, or small erase: start with Microsoft Photos.
  2. You need easy layers and everyday Windows editing: choose Paint.NET Classic.
  3. You need professional retouching, masks, layers, or compositing: choose Affinity by Canva.
  4. You need the same kind of work but refuse accounts or proprietary software: choose GIMP.
  5. You need to open or save a PSD without installing anything: try Photopea first.
  6. You shoot RAW and want a catalog: choose darktable.
  7. You shoot RAW and want the deepest technical processing control: choose RawTherapee.
  8. You need tags, ratings, face recognition, and a searchable library: choose digiKam.
  9. You want to paint or illustrate rather than primarily correct photographs: choose Krita.

The best free two-application workflows

Two focused applications often work better than one compromised all-in-one tool.

Workflow First application Second application Use it for
Simple JPEG beginner workflow Microsoft Photos Paint.NET Quick crops and corrections followed by layers, annotations, or more precise retouching.
Open-source photography darktable GIMP Non-destructive RAW development followed by compositing and pixel-level editing.
Professional free workflow darktable Affinity RAW cataloging and development followed by polished retouching, design, and compositing.
Technical RAW workflow RawTherapee GIMP, Affinity, or Krita Detailed RAW control followed by layers, illustration, or final retouching.
Large library workflow digiKam Affinity or GIMP Search, tags, ratings, and metadata in the library manager, with a dedicated creative editor for selected images.
Browser and PSD workflow Photopea None required Occasional layered editing when installation is impossible or PSD interchange is the priority.

These are workflow recommendations rather than benchmark results. The best combination depends on your camera, file sizes, available hardware, and whether you need to hand the project to another person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Project files, non-destructive editing, and export formats

Do not save only to JPEG and expect to recover your layers later. Keep three kinds of files separate:

  • Original: the camera RAW or original JPEG/PNG. Keep it untouched.
  • Editable project: the native layered project in Affinity, GIMP, Paint.NET, Photopea, or Krita.
  • Delivery export: a JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or other file prepared for a website, print service, client, or social network.

Native layered projects preserve more of your work than a flattened export. Paint.NET uses its PDN format; Photopea’s main editable format is PSD; and the other layer-based editors have their own native project formats. A JPEG or ordinary flattened PNG contains the rendered image, not the complete layer stack or edit history.

Non-destructive does not mean the same thing in every application:

  • darktable records processing steps in its database and XMP sidecars, leaving the RAW untouched.
  • RawTherapee uses sidecar processing profiles.
  • Affinity offers non-destructive tools, but behavior depends on the specific tool and document.
  • Paint.NET’s undo history is available during the current session; it is not a persistent edit recipe after the document is closed.
  • A JPEG export is a flattened result even when it was produced from a non-destructive project.

When continuing from a RAW developer in a raster editor, export a 16-bit TIFF where the receiving application and workflow support it. darktable specifically recommends TIFF when continuing in a raster editor; JPEG is generally the better choice for ordinary final delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PSD compatibility is useful but not perfect

Photopea is usually the first tool to test when PSD interchange matters. GIMP, Affinity, and Krita can also be useful for opening or working with PSD files. However, support for the PSD extension does not guarantee perfect preservation of every Photoshop feature.

Before migrating an important project, test text layers, fonts, smart objects, layer masks, adjustment layers, blend modes, linked assets, plug-in effects, color profiles, and metadata. Keep the original PSD untouched and save a test copy in the alternative editor’s native project format. If the file will return to Photoshop or go to a client, verify the exported result at full size.

Privacy, accounts, and offline use

Privacy-conscious users should distinguish between a local application, a browser editor, account entitlement, and optional online AI or storage:

  • Most straightforward local choices: GIMP, Paint.NET Classic, darktable, RawTherapee, and digiKam are desktop applications designed for local workflows. You still need to review the current software behavior and any plug-ins or connected services you install.
  • Local processing in a browser: Photopea says opened files are processed on the device and do not leave it. The page still has to load, and optional cloud-storage access should not be confused with ordinary local editing.
  • Account-linked local application: Affinity stores work locally according to Canva, but access is linked to a Canva ID and may require online entitlement verification. Optional Canva AI features have separate conditions.
  • Optional AI: Microsoft Photos documents local generative erase where available. Affinity and Adobe Express can expose AI features with subscription, entitlement, or credit conditions. Treat those features separately from the basic editor.

For confidential medical, legal, or client images, prefer a verified local workflow and save to a local drive. Do not upload sensitive files to a cloud or AI service merely because its editor is free. For Photopea, read its privacy policy and save locally rather than using optional cloud storage.

Older PCs, Windows versions, and performance

Do not choose software based on an unsupported claim that it is universally the fastest or lightest. Performance depends on image dimensions, RAW resolution, number of layers, available RAM, GPU and driver support, scratch-disk speed, browser memory, cached previews, and the number of open documents.

For an older or low-memory computer:

  • Start with Microsoft Photos or Paint.NET rather than opening a large multi-layer project in a browser.
  • Use smaller working copies for social media or web images.
  • Keep free disk space available for temporary and scratch files.
  • Close unused documents and background applications.
  • Do not promise that Affinity, darktable, RawTherapee, or large Photopea PSDs will perform well on hardware you have not tested.
  • Check the application’s current requirements, especially GPU and architecture requirements.

Paint.NET publishes particularly concrete requirements: its current version requires Windows 10 21H2 or newer, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2022, a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor, at least four cores, and Direct3D 11 support. darktable provides Windows x64 and Windows-on-Arm installers. digiKam’s official Windows downloads target 64-bit Windows 10 or later. GIMP package details can vary, so check the current Windows archive.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. An application that still installs on Windows 10 does not make the operating system itself supported by Microsoft. Check the Windows support information and your computer’s upgrade options before keeping an unsupported system online.

Commercial work and licensing

For commercial editing, check more than whether the application download is free:

  • Paint.NET explicitly permits commercial, business, government, educational, nonprofit, and personal use under its license.
  • GIMP’s software license governs the program, not ownership of the photographs you edit with it.
  • Photopea states that users own their work and may sell work created in Photopea, but you should still review the current service terms.
  • Affinity’s Canva-linked terms govern the software and connected services, including account and feature conditions.
  • Fonts, stock photographs, plug-ins, templates, and AI-generated material can have separate licenses or usage restrictions.

If a client requires strict data handling, document whether images stay local, whether an account is required, whether AI is enabled, and where project files are stored. For client delivery, provide a flattened export in the requested format while retaining your editable project and original files.

Batch resizing and repetitive work

For hundreds of photographs, Microsoft Photos is not the right primary recommendation. darktable, RawTherapee, and digiKam offer batch-oriented workflows; Photopea also provides JavaScript automation through File → Script. Paint.NET can be extended through plug-ins, but its suitability depends on the exact plug-in and task rather than on the base application alone.

Before processing a whole folder, test the operation on copies of five or ten files. Confirm filename behavior, output folder, image dimensions, color profile, metadata preservation, overwrite settings, and whether the operation is reversible. Batch tools are efficient only when the recipe is correct.

AI object removal and background editing

If AI-assisted cleanup is your priority, the choice depends on both the feature and its privacy model:

  • Microsoft Photos: offers background blur or removal and generative erase where supported; Microsoft documents these AI operations as local on the device.
  • Affinity: has Canva AI integrations, but some AI capabilities may require a subscription or additional entitlement under the current terms.
  • Adobe Express Photos: includes AI-related tools, but some may consume generative credits.

Inspect the result rather than accepting it automatically. Faces, small text, hands, fine hair, reflections, repeated patterns, and straight architectural lines are common places for AI cleanup to produce visible errors. For important work, use a layer-based editor or keep a duplicate so the original remains available.

A safe setup and backup checklist

  1. Download from the official project site. Avoid unofficial mirrors that bundle installers, outdated versions, or unwanted software.
  2. Check Windows architecture and requirements. This matters especially for ARM devices, older Windows builds, GPU support, and 64-bit-only applications.
  3. Keep the original files untouched. Work from copies when testing a new editor or PSD workflow.
  4. Save the native project before exporting. A JPEG is not a substitute for an editable project.
  5. Keep RAW sidecars together. Back up darktable databases, XMP files, and RawTherapee processing profiles with the corresponding photo collection.
  6. Use TIFF for continued high-bit-depth editing when appropriate. Use JPEG for ordinary final delivery when file size and compatibility matter more.
  7. Test file interchange. Open a representative PSD, RAW, HEIC, AVIF, or layered TIFF before adopting a program for production.
  8. Back up before upgrades. Particularly protect catalog databases and sidecar files before major-version migrations.
  9. Review AI and cloud settings. Turn off connected features when they are not needed for sensitive work.

Final recommendation

Install Affinity by Canva if you want the best all-round free Windows editor for serious layers, retouching, and compositing and you accept a Canva account. Install GIMP if open source and account-free local software matter more than ease of use. Choose Paint.NET Classic for fast everyday editing, Photopea for no-install PSD work, and darktable or RawTherapee when the source files are camera RAWs.

For many photographers, the most capable free setup is not one application: use darktable or RawTherapee to develop and organize RAW images, then Affinity, GIMP, or Krita for layers and compositing. Keep the originals, sidecars, native projects, and final exports separately backed up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Affinity by Canva really free?

The core Affinity application is currently free to use, but it is not account-free or open source. You sign in with a Canva ID, the current terms allow online entitlement verification, and some AI or connected features may depend on a subscription or additional payment. Describe it as free to use rather than as a guaranteed perpetual ownership license.

Is GIMP better than Affinity?

It depends on the priority. Affinity is the stronger general recommendation for a modern professional layer-based workflow. GIMP is better when you require open-source software, no Canva account, local desktop editing, scripting, and plug-in extensibility. GIMP also has a steeper learning curve and is not a complete RAW catalog solution.

Is Paint.NET free for commercial use?

Yes. The free Classic edition’s license permits personal, educational, commercial, government, business, nonprofit, and for-profit use. The Microsoft Store edition is paid and has the same core functionality, with conveniences such as automatic updating. Review separate licenses for fonts, plug-ins, stock assets, and AI content.

Is Photopea safe for private photos?

Photopea states that files opened in the editor are processed on the device and do not leave it. It is still a browser application that must load, and optional cloud-storage access is separate. For confidential images, read the privacy policy, save locally, and avoid optional online services unless your organization permits them.

Can these free editors open RAW files?

RAW support is not the same as a full RAW-development workflow, and camera support changes. darktable and RawTherapee are the specialist choices for developing RAW files. GIMP, Affinity, Paint.NET, and Photopea are primarily raster editors, so check your exact camera model and consider exporting a developed 16-bit TIFF before doing layer-based work.

Which free editor opens PSD files best?

Photopea is usually the first one to test because PSD is its main editable document format and it runs in a browser. Affinity, GIMP, and Krita can also be useful. None should be assumed to preserve every Photoshop feature perfectly, so test fonts, smart objects, masks, adjustment layers, blend modes, and linked assets on a copy.

Which free photo editor works without an account?

GIMP and Paint.NET Classic are the clearest general-purpose desktop choices without a vendor account. Microsoft Photos is also available as a Windows utility. Affinity requires a Canva ID, while Photopea can be used in a browser without installing an application but has its own browser and advertising model.

What is the best free Lightroom alternative for Windows?

darktable is the strongest free choice when you need both RAW development and catalog-style functions such as ratings, tags, and batch export. digiKam is better when library management and metadata are the priority. RawTherapee is the better specialist choice for detailed RAW control, but it is not as catalog-oriented as darktable.

Do I need both a RAW editor and a photo editor?

Often, yes. Use darktable or RawTherapee to interpret and develop the RAW data, then use Affinity, GIMP, Krita, or Photopea for layers, text, compositing, and advanced retouching. Export a 16-bit TIFF when continuing in a raster editor and keep the original RAW and sidecar files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I use on an older Windows laptop?

Start with Microsoft Photos or Paint.NET and work on appropriately sized copies. Large Affinity documents, darktable libraries, RawTherapee previews, and high-resolution Photopea PSDs can be demanding, so check official requirements rather than assuming any editor will perform well. Keep scratch space available and avoid opening multiple large files at once.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Affinity by Canva. Best open source: GIMP. Best easy Windows editor: Paint.NET Classic. Best browser and PSD editor: Photopea. Best RAW workflow: darktable, with RawTherapee as the technical-control alternative. Best organizer: digiKam. The right choice depends less on the word free than on whether your files are JPEGs, RAWs, layered PSDs, or part of a large managed library.
