For a mixed Windows, macOS, and Linux household, start with Kopia if you want a desktop app, Duplicati if you want to manage cloud backups in a browser, or restic if you prefer scripts and command-line control. All three document support for the three major desktop operating systems. BorgBackup is a strong alternative for Linux, macOS, and Unix-oriented users, but its Windows support is described as experimental. These tools back up files and folders; if you need to restore an entire failed computer or operating system, pair file backup with a separate disk-imaging plan.

Which free open-source backup app should you choose?

Choose based on how you want to manage backups, where you plan to store them, and what you need to recover. There is no comparable independent restore-success, restore-time, or failure-rate data for these projects, so the recommendations below are about documented features and fit—not a claim that one has been proven more reliable than another.

App Best fit Interface Documented platform coverage Useful distinction
Kopia A household that wants a graphical app across operating systems Desktop GUI and CLI Windows, macOS, and Linux Its desktop app supports creating snapshots, setting policies, and restoring files; backups are encrypted, compressed, and deduplicated.
Duplicati People who want browser-based scheduling and cloud or remote destinations Web UI, service, and CLI Windows, macOS, and Linux Creates encrypted, incremental, compressed backups and lists a broad range of cloud and remote-file destinations.
restic Technical users, scripts, and automation Command line Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD Transfers changed parts, uses cryptography, and can verify backups; its single-executable model keeps installation simple but assumes comfort with a terminal.
BorgBackup Linux/macOS users and servers using SSH-oriented repositories Command line Linux and macOS binaries; Windows support is experimental Deduplicated archives, optional compression, and documented remote repository options including SSH and SFTP.

Quick decision: choose Kopia for the most approachable cross-platform desktop option, Duplicati for browser-managed destinations, restic for automation, and BorgBackup for a Unix-oriented archive workflow. If your priority is bare-metal recovery or centrally protecting several networked computers, consider a separate imaging or client/server design rather than expecting any one of these file-backup clients to cover every job.

What do these backup apps actually protect?

Kopia, restic, and Duplicati are file-and-folder backup tools: they preserve selected data and versions in backups or snapshots. They are not interchangeable with a full-disk image, which is intended to capture a whole system for recovery after a drive failure or similar disaster.

This distinction changes what “backup complete” means. A file backup may let you retrieve documents, photos, or project folders, but it is not, by itself, a bootable replacement for a failed computer. If rebuilding the operating system, applications, and machine configuration quickly is a requirement, add a separate imaging workflow, such as Clonezilla or a platform-specific image tool. A 2026 category comparison also distinguishes file-and-folder backup from system imaging, synchronization, and client/server backup.

  • File-and-folder backup: selected files and their retained versions. Kopia, restic, and Duplicati fit this category.
  • System or disk imaging: a whole-machine recovery route. Use a separate imaging tool if bare-metal recovery matters.
  • Synchronization: keeps copies aligned, but can also propagate deletions or corruption if versioning and retention are not deliberately configured. FreeFileSync is an example in this category.
  • Client/server backup: a centrally managed design for protecting multiple computers on a network. UrBackup is an example to evaluate for that need.

Before choosing an app, write down what must be recoverable: individual files, older versions of files, or a complete machine. That single decision prevents a common mismatch—installing a capable file-backup client and later discovering that the recovery goal was an entire operating system.

How do Kopia, restic, Duplicati, and BorgBackup differ?

The main trade-offs are interface, platform coverage, destination workflow, and how much maintenance you are willing to own. The projects do not have comparable independent reliability or performance measurements in the available evidence, so feature lists should not be treated as proof of faster or safer restores.

Kopia: a graphical cross-platform starting point

Kopia is the most natural first choice when the person responsible for backups wants an actual desktop interface but still needs Windows, macOS, and Linux coverage. Its official project description calls it fast and secure open-source backup software; it documents encryption, compression, and deduplication. The desktop application lets users create snapshots, define policies, and restore files, while a command-line interface is also available.

That combination can make routine administration easier for a household than a command-line-only workflow. It does not remove the need to understand the repository password, retention choices, destination, or restore process. The presence of a GUI is an interface advantage, not evidence of independently measured reliability.

restic: portable and automation-friendly

restic is a command-line-first program for users comfortable with terminals, scheduled jobs, environment variables, and explicit repository-password management. Its project documentation describes support for Linux, BSD, Mac, and Windows, transfer of only changed parts, cryptography throughout, and backup verification. The repository identifies a BSD-2-Clause license and lists the three major desktop operating systems.

The single-executable approach reduces installation complexity, which can suit scripts and repeatable setups. The trade-off is that the user must supply the operational structure: commands, scheduling, password handling, and a way to notice failures. If a graphical wizard is a requirement, restic is a less comfortable household fit than Kopia or Duplicati.

Duplicati: browser-managed cloud and remote backups

Duplicati is a free, open-source client for Windows, macOS, and Linux that makes encrypted, incremental, compressed backups. Its project documentation lists destinations including S3, Backblaze B2, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, FTP, WebDAV, and SSH/SFTP, among others. It suits users who want to configure destinations and scheduling through a web interface rather than assemble a command-line workflow.

A browser interface does not make the storage itself free: a cloud provider may charge for capacity, transfers, or retention. Restoring also depends on the repository format, so keep the information needed to access and interpret the repository with your recovery notes. The client and its chosen destination are separate parts of the backup plan.

BorgBackup: a powerful Unix-oriented archive workflow

BorgBackup is a strong option for Linux and macOS users, especially when repositories are managed over SSH or another documented remote protocol. Its documentation describes deduplicated archives, optional lz4, zstd, zlib, and lzma compression, and the ability to mount archives for browsing. Documented remote repository options include SSH, HTTP(S), SFTP, S3, B2, and rclone.

Borg provides single-file binaries for Linux and macOS, while its Windows support is labeled experimental. That makes it a less straightforward universal Windows recommendation than Kopia, restic, or Duplicati. For a Linux or macOS server owner who is already comfortable with a terminal and remote repositories, it belongs on the shortlist.

What should you check before installing one?

Make the destination and recovery requirements explicit before choosing a client. The application can be free while the storage, network transfer, and retention you use with it still cost money.

  • Operating systems: confirm that the project documents support for every computer you need to protect. Kopia, restic, and Duplicati document Windows, macOS, and Linux coverage; Borg’s Windows support is experimental.
  • Recovery target: decide whether you need selected files and versions or a whole-machine image. Add imaging if you need bare-metal recovery.
  • Destination: choose among a local disk, NAS, SSH/SFTP, object storage, or a cloud provider based on the app’s documented options and your own setup.
  • Costs beyond the app: estimate storage capacity, transfers, and how long you intend to retain backups. A free client does not waive a destination provider’s charges.
  • Interface and maintenance: decide whether a desktop GUI, browser UI, or command line suits the person who will monitor the backups and perform restores.
  • Credentials and recovery notes: make sure the repository password and the steps needed to access the destination are preserved somewhere safe and available during a computer failure.
  • Retention: choose how many versions or how much history to keep. A retention policy affects both recoverability and the storage consumed.

A local or NAS copy is a useful part of a plan; for data that matters, keep an additional off-site or cloud copy as well. A USB external drive can serve as a local destination, but capacity, interface, and durability should match the amount of data and the drive-rotation plan. Avoid treating a connected copy as the only protection: it does not provide the separation of an off-site copy.

How do you set up a backup plan that can actually be restored?

Use a short, repeatable process: define the recovery goal, configure the client and destination, make credentials recoverable, then test an actual restore. The details differ by application and destination, so do not assume a setting name or click path that is not documented for your installed version.

  1. List what must be protected. Identify the folders and files that matter, and separately decide whether the computer also needs a full-system image. Do not assume that selecting personal files captures everything needed to rebuild an operating system.
  2. Select the client that matches the operator. Pick Kopia if a desktop GUI is the priority, Duplicati if browser-managed cloud or remote configuration is useful, restic if you can manage scripts and scheduled jobs, or BorgBackup for a Unix-oriented repository workflow.
  3. Choose a destination and account for its costs. Decide where the repository will live—local disk, NAS, or a supported remote or cloud destination—and check the provider’s current storage and transfer terms separately. Those costs are not determined by the backup app being open source.
  4. Configure what is backed up and how long versions are kept. Select the data and retention policy deliberately. The correct policy depends on how much history you need and the capacity available at the destination; there is no single duration established for every user.
  5. Record the repository password and access details. Store them in a secure place that remains reachable if the computer is lost. A repository that exists but cannot be opened is not a usable recovery copy.
  6. Run the first backup and check that it completes. For restic, the project specifically documents backup verification as a capability. Whichever tool you use, confirm that the run finished and that the expected data appears in the destination or the app’s snapshot/archive view.
  7. Practice restoring a representative file. Restore a file to a separate location and open it. This checks the practical path—not just that a backup job was configured—and helps expose missing credentials, destination access problems, or misunderstandings about where restored files go.
  8. Write down the recovery procedure. Include the client, destination, account details needed to reach it, repository password location, and the steps you used to restore. Keep the notes outside the computer being protected.
  9. Revisit the plan when something changes. New devices, changed folders, destination changes, and a growing data set can invalidate an otherwise successful setup. Re-run a restore check after a meaningful change.

The essential test is recovery, not merely a green status indicator. A backup that has never been restored is an untested process; make the restore exercise small enough to perform routinely, and include a separate full-system recovery plan if that is part of the goal.

What are the common pitfalls?

Most practical problems come from confusing categories, overlooking credentials or storage costs, or assuming that a configured job has been proven by a successful recovery.

Choosing synchronization instead of versioned backup

A synchronized copy may replicate deletions or corrupted files. If you use synchronization as part of a data-copy workflow, deliberately configure versioning and retention; otherwise, it may not preserve the older state you need.

Expecting a file backup to rebuild the computer

Selected files and snapshots are useful for file recovery, but they do not replace a whole-system image. Add a separate imaging workflow when restoring a failed drive or complete operating system is required.

Forgetting that repositories need credentials

Keep the repository password and destination access details where they can be recovered without the original machine. Document the procedure, not just the application name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming free software means free storage

The client may cost nothing, while the destination provider can bill for stored data, transfers, or retention. Check the terms of the specific destination you select rather than assuming that the software’s license covers storage.

Treating feature lists as reliability scores

Encryption, deduplication, compression, and verification describe capabilities; they are not an independent benchmark of restore success or speed. No comparable independent restore-success, restore-time, or failure-rate statistic is established here for the four projects.

Which app is best for each kind of user?

For a general household with a mix of operating systems, Kopia is the best starting point when a desktop GUI matters. The other choices make more sense when their specific workflow is the priority.

Your situation Starting point Why
Least technical mixed-OS household Kopia Desktop GUI and documented Windows, macOS, and Linux support.
Many cloud services and a browser UI Duplicati Web interface and a documented list of cloud and remote destinations.
Scripts, automation, and minimal installation restic Command-line-first, single-executable model with changed-part transfer and verification.
Linux/macOS server or SSH-oriented repository BorgBackup Unix-oriented archives and documented remote repository workflows.
Failed-drive or bare-metal recovery Add a separate imaging workflow File-and-folder backup is not a whole-system image.
Several computers on one network Evaluate a client/server design such as UrBackup A centrally managed multi-computer setup is a different category from a standalone file-backup client.

These are starting recommendations, not a guarantee that a tool will fit every destination or operating-system version. Check the project’s current documentation for your exact setup, and make the final choice only after matching it to the person who will operate the backup and the kind of recovery they must perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same backup app on Windows and Mac?

Kopia, restic, and Duplicati each document Windows and macOS support, as well as Linux. BorgBackup documents Linux and macOS binaries, but describes Windows support as experimental.

Does open source mean the backup storage is free too?

No. The application may be free while a cloud or remote-storage provider charges for capacity, transfers, or retention. Check the destination provider’s terms for the account and region you plan to use.

Can these apps back up a phone?

The documented platform coverage discussed here is for desktop operating systems, and it does not establish phone support. Check the specific project’s current documentation before relying on one of these clients for mobile data.

Is a backup verified if the scheduled job says it finished?

A completed job alone does not demonstrate that you can recover what you need. The practical check is to restore a representative file somewhere separate and confirm that it opens; restic also documents backup verification as a feature.
