Audacity is the best free MP3 trimmer for most Mac users in 2026. It is free, open source, supports MP3 import and export, offers precise time selection, and scales from a one-file cut to multitrack projects. For a faster single-file edit, choose ocenaudio; for batch conversion, AudioCraft; for on-device personal-use work, Trimr; and for an App Store editor with effects, WavePad. GarageBand is the better fit when trimming is part of a larger music project.
All six options below can cut audio locally on a Mac, so an existing MP3 does not need to be uploaded to a web service. The right choice depends on whether you need exact boundaries, batch processing, effects, multitrack arranging, or a simple beginning-and-end cut.
Which free MP3 trimmer is best for Mac?
Use this table to narrow the choice before downloading anything. “Free” does not mean the same thing in every case: some apps are fully free, one is free only for personal use, and two use a free-with-purchases model.

1. Audacity: best overall free MP3 trimmer for Mac
Audacity is the safest default when you want a free tool that will not box you into a one-file workflow. Its official FAQ describes it as free for everyone and available as a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. It imports, exports and converts MP3 and other common formats, while its multitrack timeline remains available when a simple trim grows into a larger project.
What it does well
- Select an exact waveform range and keep only that audio with Edit > Remove Special > Trim Audio.
- Use the Selection Toolbar to enter start and end times instead of relying on a mouse drag.
- Export to MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG or another supported format through File > Export Audio.
- Work with multiple tracks when you need voice, music or ambience on separate timelines.
Mac versions, cost and limits
Audacity provides universal downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs; its Mac documentation lists macOS 14 and 15 among the tested versions. The application itself is free and open source, with no subscription tier described for the core editor. Its broader feature set is the trade-off: a first-time user sees more panels and commands than in a dedicated cutter.
Best for
Choose Audacity if you want precise boundaries, a reliable export path, multitrack flexibility, or a tool you can keep using after a one-off ringtone or podcast cut.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. ocenaudio: fastest focused single-file editor
ocenaudio is the focused choice when the job is simply opening one MP3, finding the unwanted section, and exporting the result. It is described as a free single-track waveform editor, without the multitrack editing or mixing found in larger digital audio workstations.
What it does well
- Open a single file into a straightforward waveform view.
- Make quick selections for removing an introduction, dead air or an ending.
- Keep the workflow centered on one track rather than a full production timeline.
Mac versions, cost and limits
The developer download page lists version 3.22.1 for macOS 14.4 and later, plus a legacy build for macOS 10.14 and later. ocenaudio is free. Its focused design is also its boundary: readers who need multitrack editing, mixing or a larger arrangement should use Audacity or GarageBand instead.
Best for
Pick ocenaudio when speed and a clean one-file waveform matter more than track layering, effects chains or a music-production environment.

3. AudioCraft: best when trimming and batch conversion belong together
AudioCraft combines a precision waveform cutter with conversion tools, making it the most direct candidate for a folder of files that must be changed into MP3 while being cut. Its Mac App Store listing describes silence detection, unlimited free batch conversion, many import formats and MP3 export.
What it does well
- Cut from a visible waveform rather than entering only a rough duration.
- Detect silence to help locate quiet openings or endings.
- Process batches instead of repeating an import-and-export cycle for every file.
- Export MP3 after bringing in files in several supported formats.
Mac versions, cost and limits
The Mac App Store lists AudioCraft as free. Because App Store pricing and in-app terms can change, read the current listing before a large conversion job. Compared with Audacity and ocenaudio, AudioCraft has less independently documented detail about its broader editing workflow, so it is best treated as a trim-and-convert utility rather than a full multitrack studio.
Best for
Use AudioCraft when the deciding requirement is batch work: multiple source files, silence finding and MP3 conversion in one Mac app.
4. Trimr: best for on-device personal-use editing
Trimr is designed for local processing. Its developer says editing happens on-device and supports trimming, silence removal, normalization, fades, speed changes, joining, splitting and video-to-audio extraction.
What it does well
- Keep source media on the Mac while making edits.
- Remove silence, normalize level and add fades without opening a full production suite.
- Join or split files for podcasts, lectures and clips.
- Extract audio from video when the source is not already an MP3.
Mac versions, cost and limits
Trimr supports macOS 13 and later on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It is free for personal use. That license distinction matters: a business, client project or monetized production should be checked against the current developer terms before use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBest for
Choose Trimr if local processing and a broad set of practical cleanup commands are more important than multitrack production or commercial licensing.

5. WavePad: free App Store editor with effects
WavePad is a Mac App Store audio editor for readers who want trimming alongside effects, conversion and format breadth. Its listing includes autotrim, effects, batch conversion and support for many audio formats.
What it does well
- Use autotrim to remove unwanted leading or trailing material.
- Apply effects when a cut also needs basic sound treatment.
- Convert files and process batches from the same application.
- Work with a broad list of audio formats rather than MP3 alone.
Mac versions, cost and limits
The App Store lists WavePad as free with in-app purchases. The free installation can therefore be enough for basic cuts, while advanced effects or conversion functions may depend on paid upgrades. Review the current Mac App Store entry for the exact purchase terms that apply in your region.
Best for
WavePad fits users who prefer an App Store download and expect to add effects or conversion to ordinary trimming.

6. GarageBand: best when an MP3 cut is part of a music project
GarageBand is a free Mac option identified in 2026 comparisons, but it is fundamentally a music-creation environment rather than a minimal cutter. It becomes useful when the MP3 is one element of a larger arrangement, recording or multitrack project.
What it does well
- Place audio in a multitrack project alongside recorded instruments or vocals.
- Arrange sections and make edits in a Mac-native music workflow.
- Continue from a simple cut into a composition instead of moving to another application.
Mac versions, cost and limits
GarageBand is available as a free Mac option. It is more involved than ocenaudio or Trimr for a single beginning-and-end removal, and the workflow is oriented toward projects rather than a dedicated conversion queue.
Best for
Use GarageBand when trimming is only one step in making music, recording a voice part or assembling several tracks.

How do I trim an MP3 on a Mac for free?
Audacity provides the clearest repeatable workflow. The Trim Audio command removes everything outside your selection while keeping the original project state recoverable through undo.
- Open the file. Launch Audacity and choose File > Open, or drag the MP3 into the window.
- Select the part to keep. Drag across the waveform. For exact boundaries, enter the start and end times in the Selection Toolbar.
- Trim the outside. Choose Edit > Remove Special > Trim Audio, or press Command+T on macOS. Audio outside the selection is hidden, so you can undo the operation or recover the edges within the project.
- Export a new file. Choose File > Export Audio, select MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG or another available format, name the file and choose its destination.
Export to a new filename rather than overwriting the source until you have checked the cut. Keeping the original also gives you a clean fallback if the selection started or ended a fraction too early.
How can I cut an MP3 without losing quality?
The safest practical approach is to preserve the original and export only once after the edit. Opening and exporting an MP3 normally involves decoding and re-encoding, so avoid a chain of repeated exports.
Choose an appropriate output
- MP3: Use when compatibility and small size matter; retain a high-quality export setting rather than repeatedly converting.
- WAV or FLAC: Use when you want a lossless intermediate or archive and storage is less important than preserving the decoded audio.
- Same source, one export: Make all cuts, fades and level changes in one session, then export once.
Set clean boundaries
Zoom in before selecting a cut so the edit does not clip a consonant, drum hit or room tone. Audacity’s Selection Toolbar is preferable when a spoken-word clip must start at an exact timestamp. Short fades at a hard cut can reduce clicks, while silence detection in AudioCraft or silence removal in Trimr can speed up repetitive cleanup.

Choose AudioCraft for batches
Silence detection, batch conversion and MP3 export address repetitive folders better than a one-file editor.
Choose Trimr for personal local processing
On-device editing and practical commands such as normalization, fades and video extraction are useful when files should stay on the Mac.
Choose WavePad for effects and App Store delivery
It combines autotrim with effects, conversion and broad format support, but check which functions require an in-app purchase.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose GarageBand for music projects
Its value appears when the MP3 belongs in a composition or multitrack recording, not when you only need to shave ten seconds from an intro.
What should you check before installing?
- macOS version: ocenaudio’s current build requires macOS 14.4 or later, its legacy build supports macOS 10.14 or later, Trimr requires macOS 13 or later, and Audacity’s listed tested versions include macOS 14 and 15.
- Processor: Audacity and Trimr provide Intel and Apple Silicon options; confirm the current installer if your Mac uses an older Intel chip.
- License: Trimr is free for personal use, while WavePad and AudioCraft use App Store models whose current purchase terms should be read before a commercial workflow.
- Output needs: Confirm that the app exports the format you need. Audacity explicitly supports MP3, WAV, FLAC and OGG export; AudioCraft lists MP3 export.
- Privacy: These desktop workflows keep editing on your Mac rather than requiring an upload, but always review an app’s current permissions and terms.
Can a USB audio interface improve MP3 trimming?
No interface is needed to edit an existing MP3. An interface becomes relevant when you also record a microphone or mixer into the Mac before trimming; Audacity’s FAQ specifically describes recording with a microphone or mixer. For file-only cutting, the Mac’s built-in audio hardware is sufficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trim an MP3 on a Mac without uploading it?
Yes. Audacity, ocenaudio, AudioCraft, Trimr, WavePad and GarageBand are desktop or Mac App Store workflows that edit files locally. Keep the source on your Mac and export the finished clip to a local folder.
What is the easiest way to remove the beginning and end of an MP3?
Open the file in ocenaudio or Audacity, select the section you want to keep, and remove everything outside that selection. Audacity is preferable when you need timestamp-level precision; ocenaudio is simpler for a quick single-track cut.
Which free Mac audio cutter can process many files?
AudioCraft is the clearest fit because its Mac App Store listing includes unlimited free batch conversion and silence detection. Trimr also supports practical operations such as splitting and joining, but its free license is for personal use.
Can I extract audio from a video and then trim it on Mac?
Trimr explicitly includes video-to-audio extraction along with trimming, silence removal, normalization and fades. That makes it a useful starting point when the source is a video rather than an MP3.
