Before installing a free duplicate-file finder for Windows, check how it decides two files match, what it scans by default, how you can review results, and whether its cleanup workflow is recoverable. AllDup, Czkawka, and dupeGuru document different approaches; the available documentation does not establish a fair speed ranking or an overall winner.
Start with the kind of duplicate you want to find
A filename match and an identical-content match are different things. Two files can have the same name but different contents; copies of the same file can also have different names. Decide which question matters before choosing scan settings.
- Names and properties: Useful for finding likely duplicates or narrowing a scan, but a name match alone does not prove the contents are identical.
- Content matching: Byte-by-byte comparison or a hash-based method can identify files based on their data rather than their names. The tools do not all use the same method.
- Media-specific modes: A tool with separate music or picture modes may offer a workflow suited to those collections; check the mode’s documented options rather than assuming it treats every file type alike.
Compare the documented options
| Tool | Documented matching and scan options | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| AllDup | Documentation describes byte-by-byte comparison and checksum methods including MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-2 variants. It also lists filters, archive scanning, network paths, and installable and portable packages. | Worth considering if you want detailed configuration or need to include archives or network paths. Its feature page lists Windows 7–11 and Windows Server 2008 R2–2025, in 32-bit and 64-bit editions; confirm current compatibility and download details on the official AllDup site. |
| Czkawka | The project FAQ describes a size, prehash, and full-hash pipeline. It names Blake3 as the default hash and also documents CRC32 and XXH3 options. Its duplicate detection does not perform a final byte-by-byte comparison. | Consider it if hash-based matching and adjustable thresholds fit your needs. Check the minimum-size setting: the FAQ lists defaults of 16 KB for the Krokiet GUI and 8,192 bytes for the GTK GUI and CLI dup tool. The settings can be changed. See the Czkawka project. |
| dupeGuru | Project help describes Standard, Music, and Picture modes with mode-specific scan options. Its results are organized into groups with a reference file that cannot be marked for deletion. | Consider it if a mode-oriented workflow suits a general-file, music, or picture collection. Check the project’s release information for the current build and Windows support: dupeGuru’s project site. |
These are documented capabilities, not results from a side-by-side test. The documentation reviewed does not provide comparable independent speed measurements, so it cannot support a reliable fastest-tool ranking.
Check the scan scope and defaults
A scan can only find files that fall within its selected paths and filters. Before relying on its results, look for controls covering:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Folders and exclusions: Confirm which folders are included and whether any subfolders or file types are excluded.
- File size: A minimum-size threshold can omit small files. Czkawka’s documented GUI defaults are 16 KB in Krokiet and 8,192 bytes in GTK; its CLI
dupdefault is also 8,192 bytes. The FAQ says these settings can be changed. - Archives and network locations: If you need to include files inside archives or on network paths, verify that the selected tool and current settings cover them. AllDup documents both capabilities.
- File filters and comparison rules: Check whether the scan is comparing names, properties, or contents, and whether any filters exclude the files you expect to find.
A clean-looking result list does not show that every location or file type was scanned. Treat scope and thresholds as part of the result, not as minor setup details.
Review matches before removing anything
Do not select a large group for deletion just because the tool labels its members duplicates. Inspect the paths and representative files first; confirm that the copy you intend to keep is in the location you expect.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Choose the folders and comparison criteria for the scan.
- Review the resulting groups and their full file paths.
- Open or inspect representative files where the tool allows it, particularly if the files have different names or are important.
- Decide which copy to retain before selecting others for removal.
- For valuable data, make a backup first and use a recoverable action when available.
AllDup documents an option to move files to the Windows Recycle Bin. dupeGuru’s results view identifies a reference file in each group that cannot be marked for deletion. These safeguards can help with review, but neither makes every deletion safe; verify the action and file locations before proceeding.
Use official downloads and treat privacy claims cautiously
Download from the project or vendor’s official distribution channel, then check that the package and its current Windows requirements match your system. A portable package avoids a conventional installation, but “portable” does not by itself establish that a program is safer or more private.

The product documentation cited here describes features and workflows, not a comparative security audit. It does not establish that any of these tools is malware-free, collects no data, or keeps every scan local. Do not infer those properties from a free license or package type; consult a current privacy policy or technical documentation for claims that matter to you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by fit, not by an unsupported speed ranking
- Look at AllDup if its documented filters, archive and network scanning, or byte-by-byte and checksum options match your needs.
- Look at Czkawka if its hash-based pipeline and configurable minimum size suit your collection; account for the documented defaults so small files are not unintentionally left out.
- Look at dupeGuru if separate Standard, Music, and Picture modes fit the way you want to review files.
In each case, verify the current build, Windows compatibility, and free-use terms through the project’s official source before installing. Feature documentation is not proof of comparative effectiveness, and there are no comparable independent speed measurements established here.
