It is built into Windows, requires no separate subscription or installer, and scored 17.5 out of 18 in AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 test. If you specifically want a third-party antivirus, choose the free tier of Avast—listed in independent testing as Avast Free Antivirus or Avast One Free Antivirus. It scored 18 out of 18 in AV-TEST and achieved a 99.3% protection rate in AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 real-world test.
Bitdefender Antivirus Free is a focused Windows-only alternative, while Avira Free Security is the better fit if you want extras such as a limited VPN, password manager, and software-updating tools. Malwarebytes Free is useful for cleanup and second-opinion scans, but it is not a full replacement for real-time antivirus protection.

Quick comparison: the best free antivirus programs
These recommendations apply primarily to U.S. consumers. The most important distinction is whether the exact free edition provides continuous real-time protection. A paid product’s test score does not automatically apply to a similarly named free product.

1. Microsoft Defender: best free antivirus for most Windows 11 users
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the default recommendation for a typical, up-to-date Windows 11 PC. It is part of Windows Security, receives security-intelligence updates through Windows, and integrates with Windows features without another installer, account or subscription funnel.
Its current independent-test results are strong. In AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 test, Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer version 4.18 earned 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability, for a total of 17.5/18. In AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 real-world test, it achieved a 99.0% protection rate across 400 cases.
When Defender is enough
For many careful Windows 11 users, Defender is sufficient when the following protections are enabled:
- Real-time protection
- Cloud-delivered protection
- Automatic security-intelligence updates
- Reputation-based protection and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen
- Tamper protection
- Windows and application updates
Defender is not a guarantee against a convincing phishing page, a fraudulent phone call, a malicious browser extension, credential theft, social engineering or a vulnerability in software that has not been patched. Antivirus is one layer of security, not a substitute for operating-system updates, strong account security, backups and cautious behavior. Microsoft explicitly notes that antivirus cannot replace security updates.
Why choose something else?
A third-party product may be worthwhile if you prefer more visible web and email shields, Wi-Fi or network inspection, scam warnings, cross-platform applications, additional scan controls or a different interface. The trade-off is additional background software, more privacy and account decisions, possible upgrade prompts, and free-tier feature restrictions.
2. Avast Free Antivirus or Avast One Free: best third-party choice
Avast is the strongest free third-party recommendation based on the current free-edition evidence. AV-TEST tested Avast Free Antivirus, versions 26.4 and 26.5, and awarded it a perfect 18/18 in June 2026. AV-Comparatives tested Avast One Free Antivirus and recorded a 99.3% protection rate in its February–May 2026 real-world test.
There is an important product-name distinction. The lab table calls the tested product Avast Free Antivirus, while Avast’s current U.S. download and marketing experience prominently uses Avast One. Do not assume that every Avast page or installer offers exactly the same interface or feature set. Before installing, confirm that you are selecting the free tier rather than beginning a premium trial.
Compared with Defender, Avast’s free offering presents more consumer-facing features, including web and email protection, Wi-Fi or network scanning, and scam-related warnings. Those extras can be useful, but they do not automatically make Avast safer for every person. More features can also mean more notifications, more settings and more opportunities to encounter an upgrade prompt.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review Avast’s current product privacy policy before installation. Privacy claims should be based on the current policy and the specific product, not on old articles or generalized statements about the company.
3. Bitdefender Antivirus Free: best focused alternative
Bitdefender Antivirus Free is a reasonable choice for someone who wants a dedicated Windows antivirus with a relatively focused feature set. Bitdefender’s current U.S. page describes real-time protection, basic ransomware protection, malware scanning and a basic VPN allowance of up to 200 MB per device per day.
Rank #2
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
The limitations matter. The current comparison does not list anti-tracking or social-network protection, and it does not list a full-system analysis feature in the same way as higher tiers. The free product is Windows-only on the current U.S. page, so it should not be selected by someone seeking one free license for a Mac, phone and PC.
Do not transfer Bitdefender’s 2026 lab results to the free edition. AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives tested Bitdefender Total Security, a paid suite. Total Security achieved 18/18 in AV-TEST and 99.5% in AV-Comparatives, but those numbers describe that paid product, version and configuration—not Bitdefender Antivirus Free.
4. Avira Free Security: best free feature bundle
Avira Free Security includes more than basic malware scanning. Its current feature list includes real-time antivirus, browser safety, a password manager, browser tracking blocking, software and driver updating tools, optimization features and a limited VPN.
On the current Avira Windows 11 page, the free VPN allowance is 500 MB per month. That is useful for occasional low-bandwidth tasks, but it is not an unlimited VPN replacement. Check the current terms and privacy policy if VPN privacy is the reason you are considering Avira.
Updater and optimization tools can be convenient, but they do not guarantee that every application is patched or that a PC will become faster. Some stronger web-protection and firewall controls may belong to paid editions or vary by platform. Also note that AV-TEST’s June 2026 score was for Avira Internet Security, not necessarily Avira Free Security: it earned 6/6 protection, 4.5/6 performance and 6/6 usability. That result should not be presented as a free-edition score.
5. AVG AntiVirus Free: strong Avast-family alternative
AVG AntiVirus Free is a credible alternative with excellent current test results. It earned 18/18 in AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 test and a 99.3% protection rate in AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 real-world test.

AVG and Avast should be treated as alternatives, not complementary layers. AV-Comparatives identifies AVG as using the Avast engine, so installing both does not create two independent detection systems. Choose the interface, notification behavior, feature availability and privacy settings you prefer, then keep only one real-time antivirus active.
6. Panda Free Antivirus: useful alternative with cloud dependence
Panda Free Antivirus provides Windows real-time antivirus and antispyware, scheduled and on-demand scans, USB protection, game or multimedia mode and a Rescue Kit. Its cloud-based processing can help keep some analysis work away from the local PC, but it also means connectivity can affect cloud-assisted features and the arrival of new intelligence.
Panda is best considered an alternative rather than a leading recommendation because the supplied current AV-Comparatives result is for Panda Dome Advanced, not Panda Free Antivirus. Dome Advanced recorded a 96.5% protection rate, but that score cannot be used as proof of Panda Free’s performance.
7. Malwarebytes Free: best free cleanup and second-opinion scanner
Malwarebytes Free is valuable, but it belongs in a different category. On Windows, the free edition provides on-demand scanning and cleanup. Malwarebytes’ current free-versus-paid feature table lists real-time protection, web protection, ransomware protection and exploit protection as paid features.

Use Malwarebytes Free alongside Defender when you want a second opinion or suspect unwanted software. It should not be the sole real-time antivirus on a Windows PC. The free edition can also schedule a monthly scan: open Malwarebytes, select the Scanner card, open Scan Scheduler, choose A full scan once a month – on us!, and select Sounds good. This optional scan does not activate continuous real-time protection.
AV-Comparatives tested Malwarebytes Premium, not Malwarebytes Free, and recorded 98.8%. That result should not be used to rank the free scanner as a full antivirus.
What should free antivirus actually include?
For this comparison, free antivirus means ongoing core protection without payment, a mandatory credit card or a disguised time-limited trial. A standalone free antivirus should provide real-time protection and automatic threat-definition or cloud-intelligence updates. Download it from the vendor’s official website or an official app store.
That definition separates three different categories:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Free scanner or cleanup utility: Malwarebytes Free, Microsoft Defender Offline, Panda Cloud Cleaner and Malwarebytes AdwCleaner.
- Free mobile security app: Android and iOS apps, which do not work like unrestricted Windows desktop antivirus because mobile operating systems impose different technical limits.
How to install free antivirus without accidentally starting a trial
- Start at the vendor’s official domain. Avoid download mirrors, bundled installers and search advertisements that imitate vendor pages.
- Look for wording such as Free, Basic or Essential. Read the plan comparison before clicking Download.
- Do not enter payment details unless you deliberately want a paid trial or subscription.
- During setup, read each screen for premium trials, default-browser changes, extra extensions and optional data-sharing settings.
- After installation, open the product’s account or subscription page and verify that the free tier is active and real-time protection is enabled.
- Open Windows Security and confirm that Windows recognizes the installed antivirus.
- Uninstall the product if the free mode expires, real-time protection becomes disabled or the upgrade prompts outweigh its benefits. Restart afterward and confirm that Defender has resumed active protection.
Never run two real-time antivirus engines together
Keep one active real-time antivirus on a Windows PC. Two active engines can duplicate scanning, increase resource use, conflict over quarantine actions and make Windows Security status confusing. Microsoft says that when another antivirus is installed and active, Defender automatically disables itself or enters passive mode.
Do not manually disable Defender and then leave the computer without confirmed protection. If you replace a third-party product, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, open Windows Security and verify that Virus & threat protection shows active protection.
How to verify Microsoft Defender protection in Windows 11
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Manage settings.
- Confirm that Real-time protection is On.
- Confirm that Cloud-delivered protection is On.
- Open App & browser control and confirm that Reputation-based protection is enabled.
- Open Ransomware protection and review Controlled folder access, particularly if important files are stored in Documents, Desktop or OneDrive.
Microsoft documents these Windows Security controls, including SmartScreen, tamper protection, cloud-delivered protection and Controlled Folder Access, in its Windows security documentation.
Choose the right Defender scan
- Quick scan: checks common locations where threats are found.
- Full scan: checks every file and program, and may take considerably longer.
- Custom scan: checks a selected file or folder.
- Microsoft Defender Offline scan: restarts the computer and scans outside the normal Windows environment, making it harder for persistent malware to hide.
Save open work before starting an Offline scan. Review results under Virus & threat protection > Protection history. See Microsoft’s Windows Security scan instructions for the current interface.
What the 2026 independent tests really show
Independent tests are useful, but they are not permanent universal rankings. Results apply to the exact version, edition, settings and test period. AV-TEST awards up to 6 points each for protection, performance and usability; a total score of 17.5 or higher receives its Top Product designation.

Performance results need context
AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance test used an up-to-date 64-bit Windows 11 system, including a lower-end configuration with an Intel Core i3 processor, 8 GB of RAM and an SSD. Activities included file copying, archiving, application installation and launch, downloads, browsing and a UL Procyon benchmark.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Those tests are more useful than saying an antivirus is universally lightweight or never slows a computer. Actual impact varies with the CPU, RAM, storage and disk health; the number and size of files; cloud connectivity; default settings and exclusions; previously fingerprinted files; and the exact product version.
Mac: built-in protection is often enough
macOS includes several security layers, including Gatekeeper, code signing, notarization, sandboxing, XProtect and system protections. Apple describes these in its macOS security documentation. That does not mean Macs are immune to malicious downloads, unwanted software, phishing, scams or cross-platform malware.
Many Mac users do not need a third-party antivirus if they keep macOS updated, install software from trustworthy sources and recognize phishing attempts. Additional protection is more reasonable if you regularly install unofficial software, use torrents, exchange files with Windows computers or want a separate real-time scanning layer.
In AV-TEST’s March 2026 macOS Tahoe test, Avast Security and AVG Antivirus each scored 18/18. Avira Security scored 3.5/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability. These results apply to the tested Mac products and version, not automatically to every free plan or every macOS release.
Android: keep Play Protect enabled
Google Play Protect is the baseline for certified Android devices. It checks apps before installation, periodically scans installed apps, checks apps installed outside Google Play, warns about potentially harmful applications and may disable or remove harmful apps. Google documents these capabilities in its Play Protect information.
In AV-TEST’s May 2026 Android test, Google Play Protect scored 5.5/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 5/6 for usability. Avast, AVG, Avira and Bitdefender each scored 6/6/6 in that test. Consider a reputable third-party Android security app if you sideload applications, use unofficial app stores or want additional scam, privacy or identity features. Do not assume a free desktop license includes the same mobile features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.iPhone and iPad: traditional antivirus is the wrong model
iOS and iPadOS do not allow third-party apps to perform unrestricted system-wide antivirus scans in the way Windows antivirus programs do. Apple uses centralized app distribution, code signing, sandboxing, App Review and malware checks. Apple devices also regularly check installed third-party apps for malware identified by Apple.
Security apps for iPhone and iPad therefore generally focus on web protection, scam detection, identity monitoring, VPNs, ad blocking or SMS filtering. iPhone users should prioritize current iOS updates, strong Apple Account authentication, cautious link handling, App Store hygiene and protection against phishing and account takeover. An iPhone is not immune to scams simply because traditional antivirus scanning is restricted.

Windows 10: antivirus does not fix an unsupported operating system
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Without Extended Security Updates, Microsoft no longer provides normal security fixes for the operating system. Installing a free antivirus does not restore those missing operating-system protections.
For a Windows 10 computer:
- Upgrade to Windows 11 if the hardware supports it.
- If an upgrade is not possible, check eligibility for Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates program.
- Keep Defender or another supported antivirus enabled.
- Reduce exposure by avoiding unnecessary downloads, risky websites and sensitive activity on the unsupported machine.
Microsoft’s current U.S. consumer ESU page says ESU applies to Windows 10 version 22H2, provides critical and important security updates, does not provide feature improvements or technical support, and can be used through October 13, 2026. Eligibility and enrollment requirements apply.
When free antivirus is not enough
Free antivirus can be an appropriate baseline, but consider paid security or professional help when you need:
- Centralized management for a business or household with many devices
- Parental controls, identity monitoring or account-recovery assistance
- Unlimited VPN access
- Advanced ransomware rollback or stronger exploit controls
- Support for sensitive business, financial or medical work
- Security coverage for an unsupported operating system—which antivirus alone cannot provide
Even a paid antivirus cannot guarantee protection from a user who approves a fake support request, gives a password to a scammer or runs malware voluntarily. Backups, multi-factor authentication, software updates, browser caution and limited administrator privileges remain important.

The installer turns out to be a premium trial
Cancel before the trial converts if you did not intend to subscribe. Verify the installed product’s status and whether real-time protection remains available without payment. If the free mode has expired or the product requires a subscription for core protection, uninstall it and confirm Defender is active after a restart.
A legitimate application is detected
Do not immediately exclude an entire folder. First confirm that the file came from the official developer, inspect its digital signature and compare the download source. Submit it to the antivirus vendor for review where available. If an exclusion is unavoidable, make it as narrow as possible—preferably file-specific—and remove it afterward. Microsoft warns that exclusions create blind spots.
The PC may already be infected
- Disconnect from the internet if active compromise is suspected.
- Run Microsoft Defender Offline.
- Review Protection history and follow the recommended remediation.
- Run an on-demand Malwarebytes cleanup scan as a second opinion.
- Change important passwords from a separate, trusted device if credential theft is possible.
- For ransomware, banking malware or repeated reinfection, seek professional incident-response or recovery assistance instead of repeatedly installing antivirus products.
The computer has no internet access
Cloud-assisted antivirus can still scan with locally available definitions, but it may not receive new definitions or perform cloud analysis. Do not assume complete air-gapped protection unless the vendor documents an offline update and scanning workflow. If possible, use a vendor-provided rescue or bootable scanning method and update definitions through a trusted process.
Final recommendation matrix
| Your situation | Use this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Typical, updated Windows 11 PC | Microsoft Defender | Strong current testing, built into Windows and no separate free-product funnel |
| You want a third-party Windows antivirus with more visible web, email and network features | Avast’s free tier | Strong free-edition test results and a broader consumer feature set |
| You want focused Windows protection with fewer bundled extras | Bitdefender Antivirus Free | Basic real-time and ransomware protection, with a limited VPN |
| You want a free bundle with a VPN, password manager and maintenance tools | Avira Free Security | Broadest free feature bundle, but the VPN is capped at 500 MB per month |
| You prefer AVG’s interface or product ecosystem | AVG AntiVirus Free | Excellent current tests; functionally related to Avast’s engine |
| You want USB protection, Rescue Kit and a cloud-oriented product | Panda Free Antivirus | Useful features, but edition-specific test evidence is limited |
| You suspect malware or want a second opinion | Malwarebytes Free | Good on-demand cleanup tool; do not use it as the only real-time antivirus |
| Android phone | Google Play Protect first | Built-in baseline protection; add a reputable app if you sideload or use unofficial stores |
| iPhone or iPad | Apple’s built-in security plus account and phishing safeguards | Traditional system-wide antivirus is not the normal iOS security model |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Microsoft Defender good enough in 2026?
For many ordinary Windows 11 users, yes, provided Windows is updated and real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection, reputation-based protection, tamper protection and security-intelligence updates are enabled. Defender does not eliminate phishing, scams, social engineering or risks from unpatched software.
Can two antivirus programs run together?
Do not run two real-time antivirus engines simultaneously. They can duplicate scans, increase resource use and conflict over quarantine actions. Use one active antivirus and reserve Malwarebytes Free or another scanner for occasional on-demand second-opinion scans.
Is Malwarebytes Free a complete antivirus?
No. Malwarebytes Free provides on-demand scanning and cleanup. Continuous real-time, web, ransomware and exploit protection are paid features, so it should supplement Defender rather than replace a real-time antivirus.
Why is Kaspersky not recommended for U.S. users?
The U.S. Department of Commerce prohibited Kaspersky from providing covered antivirus software and cybersecurity products or services to U.S. persons. The transition period ended at 12:00 a.m. EDT on September 29, 2024. International lab-test availability and legal suitability in the United States are separate issues.
Does free antivirus protect a Mac or iPhone in the same way as a Windows PC?
No. macOS has built-in security layers and may not require third-party antivirus for every user. iOS restricts unrestricted system-wide scanning, so iPhone security apps generally provide web, scam, identity, VPN or filtering features instead of traditional antivirus scanning.

The Bottom Line
Use Microsoft Defender on an updated Windows 11 PC unless you have a specific reason to want a third-party product. Choose Avast’s free tier for the strongest directly tested third-party option, Bitdefender Free for focused Windows protection, Avira Free Security for bundled extras, or Malwarebytes Free only for on-demand cleanup. Keep one real-time antivirus active, verify its free status after installation, and remember that no antivirus compensates for an unsupported operating system or unsafe account and browsing habits.
