DuckDuckGo offers a familiar privacy-focused experience, but says its traditional web links and images largely come from Bing. Startpage delivers partner results, including Google and Bing, through a privacy-oriented service; Ecosia may appeal if its environmental mission matters to you. The best fit depends on whether you want a new interface, a different source of results, different privacy practices, or some combination.
What counts as an alternative to Bing?
A different search-engine name does not necessarily mean a different source of results. The interface, underlying index, ranking system, and answer features are distinct parts of the experience, as Search Engine Watch explains in its search-engine coverage. If you want to diversify away from Bing, check where ordinary web links come from—not just who operates the site you visit.
- Different interface: The service looks and behaves differently, but may still rely on Bing for much of its ordinary web search.
- Different index: The service operates its own general web index or otherwise draws on sources beyond Bing.
- Different privacy model: The provider describes different data handling, but that does not by itself make searches anonymous.
Best free Bing alternatives at a glance
| Service | Why consider it | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Brave Search | Best fit when an independent index is the priority. Brave says it removed the remaining Bing-sourced results from its search results page. | That independence is Brave’s own characterization. A 2026 live comparison could not complete all of its Brave queries because a verification screen blocked access. |
| DuckDuckGo | A familiar free service with its own crawler and multiple sources for specialized answers. | DuckDuckGo says traditional links and images are largely sourced from Bing, so it does not fully diversify the source of ordinary web links. |
| Startpage | A privacy-oriented intermediary for partner results, including Google and Bing. | It is not a wholly independent general index; partner relationships and privacy details can change. |
| Ecosia | A free option for readers drawn to its environmental mission. | Its sourcing can vary by context and region; the cited 2026 comparison does not establish one fixed source for all results. |
| Kagi | Worth considering if customization or ad-free search matters more than the free requirement. | Kagi is paid, not a free alternative. It describes a blended model that includes its own indexes and anonymized requests to outside sources. |
Which alternative should you choose?
Choose Brave Search to prioritize index independence
Brave says its search index is independent and that it removed the last remaining Bing-sourced results from its search results page. That makes it the most direct pick here if your specific aim is to move away from Bing’s underlying index. Treat the independence claim as Brave’s own description, and consider that access limitations affected the available 2026 comparison testing.
Choose DuckDuckGo for a familiar privacy-focused service
DuckDuckGo says it operates its own crawler and maintains many indexes, and that specialist sources contribute to instant answers. It also says ordinary traditional links and images are largely sourced from Bing. So DuckDuckGo is more than a Bing-branded interface, but switching to it does not fully replace Bing as a source for conventional web results. See DuckDuckGo’s explanation of where results come from.

#1 Best Overall
Choose Startpage for partner results through a privacy-oriented intermediary
Startpage’s support documentation describes its relationships with Google and Microsoft Bing. It is a route to partner-provided results rather than a general web index built entirely by Startpage. If your priority is a privacy-oriented service around mainstream partner results, it may suit you; if you want an independent index, it is not the same kind of choice as Brave. See Startpage’s partner-results explanation.
Choose Ecosia if its environmental mission matters to you
Ecosia’s mission can be a deciding factor if you want your search choice to align with environmental priorities. Its result sourcing is not established as one fixed index across circumstances: the 2026 comparison describes variation by context and region. Check the service’s current sourcing for your market rather than assuming every query comes from one provider.

Consider Kagi only if you can give up the free requirement
Kagi is a paid option, so it does not meet the title’s free constraint. Its documentation describes a blend of its own indexes and anonymized requests to outside sources, with customization among the reasons to consider it. Its account of its model is available in Kagi’s comparison documentation.
How to compare results and privacy
Match the service to the task
Search quality depends on what you are searching for and where you are. Someone seeking familiar local, shopping, or image results may value different things from someone trying to diversify indexes or reduce generated summaries. Search Engine Watch’s 2026 comparison reported meaningful task differences; it did not establish one alternative as best for every query or user.

Read privacy claims as policy descriptions, not anonymity guarantees
A search provider, the network you use to reach it, and the websites you visit are separate parts of your privacy picture. Privacy Guides recommends evaluating each provider’s policy and notes that keeping your IP address from the search provider may require a separate measure, depending on your threat model. Its recommendations are an assessment of policies, not a guarantee of how a provider will behave. See Privacy Guides’ search-engine recommendations and caveats.
Check for the controls you actually want
If avoiding AI-generated summaries or preferring link-first results matters, verify the service’s current controls before switching. Features change, and the available evidence here does not establish a current, comparable AI-control setting across all the listed services.

What the 2026 comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Search Engine Watch published its comparison on 9 August 2026, reporting tests conducted on 8 August. The test used a clean, logged-out Chrome desktop session, English interface, and Paris location. DuckDuckGo No-AI and Startpage were tested on all 12 queries; Brave was tested on seven before a human-verification screen blocked further tasks. The article says Ecosia, Qwant, and Mojeek were documentation-only assessments because of access blocks. These results are a dated snapshot of particular services, queries, and conditions—not a universal ranking or a prediction for another country, language, device, or search.
For the comparison’s findings and methodology, see Search Engine Watch’s 2026 alternative-search-engine comparison.
