If you want a fighting game beyond Street Fighter, choose by the skill you want to learn first rather than by a supposed universal “easiest” game. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the smoothest 2D starting point for players who worry about motion inputs; Guilty Gear -Strive- offers the clearest documented guided-learning tools; Tekken 8 is the right route into 3D movement; and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves combines beginner controls with a deeper system to grow into.

All four can teach lasting fighting-game fundamentals—blocking, spacing, timing, hit confirmation and matchup decisions—but they present those lessons differently. The table below puts the practical differences first.

What fighting game should I play after Street Fighter?

Start with the game that matches the obstacle you actually want to remove. If execution is keeping you from enjoying matches, choose Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. If you learn best from structured lessons and examples, choose Guilty Gear -Strive-. If your curiosity is about sidesteps, walls and three-dimensional positioning, choose Tekken 8. If you want a forgiving control layer without giving up gauges and system depth, choose Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

None of these choices makes fundamentals optional. Simplified inputs can help you perform a move, but they do not decide when to block, how far to stand, which attack reaches first or how to respond to an opponent’s habits. A beginner-friendly control scheme and a simple overall game are different things.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising: the lowest-execution 2D path

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the best first alternative for a Street Fighter player who understands traditional 2D combat but does not want motion inputs to be the first gate. Cygames documents three control options: Manual, Smart and Super Ultimate. Smart supports combos through button mashing, while Super Ultimate is described for beginners who want to “jump right into the fray.”

That choice lets you begin with the part of fighting games that is most visible in a real match: movement, guarding, timing and choosing a safe moment to attack. You can later move toward Manual controls when you want more precise routes. Starting with Smart or Super Ultimate is not a commitment to stay there forever; it is a way to separate strategic learning from execution practice.

  • Manual: the traditional option for players who want direct control over commands and combo routes.
  • Smart: a lower-friction route for performing combos by mashing buttons.
  • Super Ultimate: the most immediately accessible choice for a beginner eager to enter matches.

The official mode list gives you several ways to learn before ranked play: Story, Arcade, Training and an online lobby. Story and Arcade provide CPU-facing practice, while Training lets you repeat a situation without the pressure of a live opponent. The lobby gives you a social place to become comfortable with movement and match flow.

The trade-off is that easier commands do not flatten the game’s decision-making. You still need to recognize when an opponent is attacking, protect yourself while recovering, control the distance at which your character’s best buttons work and convert a successful hit into a useful follow-up. When those ideas become familiar, switching to Manual can make your practice more deliberate rather than forcing you to learn everything at once.

Guilty Gear -Strive-: the clearest documented teaching layer

Choose Guilty Gear -Strive- if your main question is, “What should I practice next?” Arc System Works documents a Tutorial that adjusts advice to your inputs and skills. Its Mission mode breaks the game into specific situations, and Combo Maker recommendations range from beginner to advanced. That combination gives a new player a visible progression instead of leaving every lesson to experimentation.

The game is still a distinct anime fighter rather than a Street Fighter clone. Air movement, character-specific tools and its own system interactions change how you approach neutral exchanges. The first lessons remain recognizable—blocking, anti-airs, throws and confirming a hit—but the routes you use to apply them can be faster, more vertical and more character-dependent.

The adaptive tutorial matters because beginners often practice the wrong layer. If you cannot perform a command consistently, advice about a more advanced combo will not solve the immediate problem. Input-sensitive guidance can help you identify whether the next step is a simpler command, a safer button, a defensive response or a more reliable combo route.

Mission mode is most useful when treated as a sequence of small tests rather than a checklist to clear in one sitting. Learn one situation, play a few matches while looking for it, then return to the mission if the response still feels automatic rather than understood. Combo Maker recommendations can supply a route that fits your current ability without implying that the most difficult route is always the best one.

Guilty Gear -Strive- suits readers motivated by presentation as well as instruction. The anime visual identity can make repeated practice feel purposeful, while the teaching tools provide a concrete answer when you are unsure what to work on. Its limitation is that the game’s air options and character-specific mechanics eventually demand a broader mental model than a grounded 2D beginner may expect.

Tekken 8: the right first step into 3D fighting

Pick Tekken 8 when the appeal is three-dimensional movement, not merely a different roster. Bandai Namco documents structured tutorials, Arcade Quest and replay analysis that identifies moments where a match was decided. Those systems support a learning path built around positioning and interpretation rather than only command execution.

In a 3D fighter, distance is not just a line between two characters. Sidesteps can evade attacks or change the angle of an exchange; walls can restrict movement; and the direction you choose may matter as much as the button you press. A Street Fighter player can carry over blocking, timing and hit-confirmation habits, but must learn to read space in depth and around the stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arcade Quest provides a guided way to encounter the game’s basic ideas before treating online matches as the main classroom. Structured tutorials can introduce movement and attacks in an ordered sequence. Replay analysis is especially valuable after a loss because it points to moments that influenced the result, giving you a specific exchange to review instead of a vague conclusion that you “played badly.”

Tekken 8 is therefore not the recommendation for someone seeking the fewest concepts. It is the recommendation for someone who wants to learn a different spatial language. If sidesteps, wall positioning and the rhythm of a 3D arena sound more interesting than mastering another 2D neutral game, the additional complexity is the point rather than a defect.

Begin with a small set of movement and defensive goals. Practice moving forward and backward without pressing an attack, add blocking, then add a sidestep and one reliable punish. Only after those actions feel deliberate should you expand a character’s move list. The replay tools become more useful when you can name the behavior you were trying to produce.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves: accessible controls with technical depth

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is a strong fit for a player who wants a traditional SNK-style system but does not want execution to block the first week of learning. SNK documents two control schemes. Smart Style provides one-button special moves and quick auto-combos and is presented as suitable for beginners. Arcade Style is the more technical option for players who want conventional command control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smart Style lowers the mechanical barrier, not the strategic ceiling. The game’s gauges, REV mechanics, guard decisions and spacing still determine whether an attack is safe, whether you can capitalize on an opening and how you manage resources. A one-button special can help you respond in time; it cannot tell you which response is correct or whether spending a resource now leaves you vulnerable later.

The training manual documents a particularly broad set of controls: opponent behavior, recording and replay, input history, attack data, adjustable health and meter parameters, restart positions and button configuration. Those options let you recreate a specific problem. You can record an opponent’s attack, restart at the same distance, inspect your inputs and change the meter or health state to see how a decision behaves under different conditions.

Ranked Match also asks first-time players to select Newcomer, Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced skill levels. That gives a new player a way to describe their starting point without pretending that everyone enters with the same background. Select the level that reflects your current comfort, then revise it as your goals change.

Fatal Fury is the choice for someone who wants accessible entry controls and expects the game to keep revealing systems over time. It may feel less immediately transparent than a minimal 2D fighter because REV and gauge interactions add another layer to every exchange. The detailed training tools are there to make that layer learnable rather than mysterious.

How do simple inputs differ from a simple fighting game?

Simple inputs reduce the number of physical steps needed to produce an attack. They do not remove the need to understand risk, timing, spacing, defense or resource management. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves make this distinction explicit by offering accessible schemes alongside more traditional controls.

Think of execution as one part of a larger chain:

  1. Recognition: identify what the opponent is doing and whether you have a response.
  2. Decision: choose block, movement, throw, attack or a resource spend.
  3. Execution: perform the selected action accurately enough and quickly enough.
  4. Conversion: turn a successful action into damage, position or another advantage.
  5. Adjustment: notice how the opponent changes and select a different response next time.

Smart controls primarily help with the third step. They can make a new player’s intended action appear on screen sooner, which is useful while learning the first two and fourth steps. A player who relies on a shortcut still has to choose the right moment and understand what happens afterward.

Which beginner features matter more than a short combo?

A short combo is useful, but a repeatable learning loop is more valuable. Look for tools that let you isolate a situation, observe what happened and retry without rebuilding the setup every time.

  • Adaptive advice: Guilty Gear -Strive- documents tutorial guidance adjusted to your inputs and skills, helping identify an appropriate next step.
  • Scenario lessons: Mission mode and structured tutorials turn broad advice into specific situations.
  • Replay and input information: Fatal Fury’s input history and attack data show what you actually did, while Tekken 8’s replay analysis highlights decisive moments.
  • Recording: Recording and replaying an opponent’s behavior lets you practice a response repeatedly rather than waiting for a rare situation in a live match.
  • Solo modes: Story, Arcade and other CPU-facing modes provide a lower-pressure way to learn movement and basic offense.

Use these tools to create one question per session. Examples include “Can I block this attack and punish it?”, “Can I stop an obvious jump?” or “Did I lose because I stood too close to the wall?” A focused question produces a clearer practice target than attempting to memorize an entire character guide.

Should I start with online matches or solo modes?

Use solo modes to learn controls and a live opponent to learn decisions. Neither replaces the other. CPU modes let you repeat movement, commands and basic defensive responses without worrying about another person changing plans; human matches expose you to timing, hesitation and adaptation that scripted behavior cannot fully provide.

A practical sequence is to complete the introductory lesson, select one dependable attack and one defensive response, then play short online sets with a single goal. Do not wait until every move is memorized. Entering earlier reveals which situations actually stop you, and you can take those situations back to Training, Mission, Arcade Quest or replay analysis.

After a match, write down one moment rather than a general verdict. “I kept getting hit while walking forward” can become a spacing drill. “I missed the punish” can become an input-history check. “I did not know what to do near the wall” can become a positioning exercise in Tekken 8. This loop turns losses into information without requiring a long combo list.

How should I choose among the four games?

Use this decision path if two recommendations still appeal to you:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  1. Are motion inputs your main concern? Choose Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, beginning with Smart or Super Ultimate controls.
  2. Do you want the game to suggest a next lesson? Choose Guilty Gear -Strive- for its documented adaptive Tutorial, Mission mode and Combo Maker recommendations.
  3. Do you specifically want sidesteps and 3D positioning? Choose Tekken 8 and treat it as a new spatial discipline, not a simpler Street Fighter substitute.
  4. Do you want one-button access now but technical systems later? Choose Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves and use Smart Style before moving toward Arcade Style.
  5. Are presentation and atmosphere a major motivator? Let the anime, fantasy RPG, 3D martial-arts or classic SNK identity that you actually want to return to break the tie.

The best choice is the one whose practice problems you are willing to repeat. A game with a theoretically lower execution barrier will not help if its movement or visual style does not hold your attention, while a more demanding game can be a good beginner choice when its learning tools answer your questions.

How we picked

These recommendations use five criteria documented by the games’ official materials and relevant to a Street Fighter newcomer:

  • How much execution is required before a player can perform useful attacks and combos.
  • Whether tutorials, missions, replay analysis, recording or adaptive advice turn mistakes into specific practice tasks.
  • Whether the game teaches grounded 2D fighting or a 3D movement and positioning model.
  • Whether Story, Arcade, Training, Arcade Quest or other solo-facing modes support onboarding before ranked play.
  • Whether the game’s identity—anime spectacle, fantasy presentation, 3D martial arts or SNK system depth—matches the motivation that keeps a beginner practicing.

This is a fit-based guide, not a verified universal difficulty ranking. Official documentation establishes the control schemes and learning features; it does not establish a single easiest game for every player.

What should I practice in my first week?

Keep the first week narrow enough that you can recognize improvement. The exact buttons differ by character and game, but the learning order below works across all four choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Movement: walk forward, retreat and stop at a distance where your main attack reaches.
  2. Defense: block a basic attack, then practice waiting for the opponent to finish before responding.
  3. One anti-air or equivalent answer: learn one reliable response to an opponent who attacks from above or changes elevation.
  4. One punish: identify a slow move or unsafe action and use one dependable attack afterward.
  5. One conversion: connect your most reliable follow-up after a successful hit.
  6. One replay question: review a match and identify a single repeated mistake to address next session.

In Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, you can begin this sequence with Smart or Super Ultimate controls. In Guilty Gear -Strive-, use Tutorial and Mission mode to locate the relevant lesson. In Tekken 8, use Arcade Quest and replay analysis to connect movement with decisions. In Fatal Fury, use Smart Style first and Training’s recording, input history and adjustable parameters to isolate the situation.

Which controller should a beginner use?

Use the controller on which you can consistently press the directions and buttons you need. A standard gamepad is sufficient to learn every recommendation here; an arcade stick or leverless controller is optional, not a prerequisite. Changing hardware while you are still learning spacing can make it harder to tell whether a mistake came from a decision or from unfamiliar controls.

If a command repeatedly fails, first check the game’s input history and training settings before buying equipment. Fatal Fury explicitly provides input history and button configuration, while the other games’ tutorials and practice modes can help you determine whether the problem is timing, direction or button choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from a simplified control scheme to traditional inputs later?

Yes. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising offers Manual alongside Smart and Super Ultimate, and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves offers Arcade Style alongside Smart Style. Switch after you understand the situation you are trying to solve, then practice the command in Training rather than changing controls in the middle of a stressful match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Tekken 8 a bad choice if I have only played 2D fighters?

No, but it teaches a different spatial model. Expect to spend early practice on sidesteps, stage position and movement around walls instead of treating it as a 2D game with another roster.

Do I need to learn every character before playing online?

No. Learn one character’s movement, a dependable defensive answer and a small number of attacks first. Match experience will show which situations deserve deeper study, and the documented replay or training tools can then target those situations.

What if I keep losing even with beginner controls?

Beginner controls address execution, not decisions. Review one recurring exchange—such as attacking while unsafe, failing to block or standing at the wrong distance—then recreate it in the game’s tutorial, mission, replay or training mode and practice one response.
