Best fit depends on the support system you already use: Intercom Fin AI Agent suits teams building around Intercom’s knowledge tools, Zendesk AI agents are a natural option for businesses with an activated Zendesk Help Center, and Gorgias AI Agent is geared toward Shopify-centered ecommerce support. None is established as the most accurate: the available product documentation describes capabilities, not independent head-to-head performance.

“Learns from your help center” usually means the chatbot retrieves information from connected or synchronized knowledge sources. It does not necessarily mean the vendor trains a custom AI model on your company’s documents. The difference matters: source coverage, update timing, access controls, and what happens when the bot is unsure all affect whether its answers are useful and safe.

FAQ chatbot comparison: which one fits your support stack?

Product Best fit Knowledge and context described by the vendor Freshness and safeguards Price comparison
Intercom Fin AI Agent Teams using Intercom or prepared to manage support knowledge in its ecosystem. Public Intercom articles, public websites, snippets, documents, and connected sources such as Salesforce and Freshdesk; public Zendesk articles can be synced or imported. Intercom says native public articles are ready to use and native updates apply immediately; external sources follow a separate sync schedule. Audience rules and escalation guidance can shape answers. Comparable current pricing is not stated in the reviewed product documentation.
Zendesk AI agents with Knowledge sources Teams with an activated Zendesk Help Center and a need to combine it with external knowledge. Zendesk Help Center content and external knowledge sources connected through a crawler or connector; multiple sources can be combined. Help Center content is searched as it exists at query time; external material reflects the latest sync, usually every 24 hours. Article permissions apply, and the agents do not search the live internet. Comparable current pricing is not stated in the reviewed product documentation.
Gorgias AI Agent Shopify-oriented ecommerce support teams that want answers informed by store context and support content. Shopify orders, customer and product data, Help Center articles, public website and catalog content, custom guidance, uploaded documents, and connected actions such as returns. The vendor describes a second-model quality check and confidence threshold, human handoff when safeguards prevent an answer, and review of automated messages with their sources. Comparable current pricing is not stated in the reviewed product documentation.

This is a feature-based shortlist, not a performance ranking. The documentation does not provide comparable resolution rates, independent accuracy results, or a complete price comparison. What “learns from your help center” means

In customer-service products, the phrase can describe several different ways an AI agent uses company information. A bot may retrieve relevant passages from articles when a customer asks a question, use material imported into its knowledge system, or consult connected business data alongside support documents. Those are not the same as a model being retrained on every help-center article.

Ask a vendor what the product actually does with your content: whether it connects to a source, imports or indexes it, how often it refreshes, and whether the answer is generated from retrieved information at question time. That distinction helps you anticipate stale answers and establish which system is responsible for updating a policy or product detail.

Knowledge retrieval also does not guarantee that a response is correct. It gives the agent information to draw on; source quality, permissions, question wording, and the agent’s uncertainty handling still matter. The three products below describe different combinations of knowledge sources, business context, and handoff controls.

1. Intercom Fin AI Agent: for teams invested in Intercom

Fin is a close match for a support organization that already uses Intercom or is willing to manage customer-facing knowledge in its system. Intercom’s documentation lists public Intercom articles, public websites, snippets, documents, and connected sources such as Salesforce and Freshdesk. Public Zendesk articles can also be synced or imported.

Intercom says its public articles are already imported and ready for Fin. Native article edits apply immediately, while external sources have a separate synchronization schedule. Its FAQ describes external content syncing weekly; because cadence and configuration can change, verify the current behavior in your own workspace before relying on a freshness assumption. See Intercom’s knowledge-source documentation for source and setup details.

Teams can manage which content is available and apply audience rules, which is important when different customers should see different answers. Intercom also describes using guidance to escalate sensitive topics to a human. Those controls are operationally significant: adding a document is only useful if the right customers can access its information and the bot knows when not to answer.

Intercom notes that Fin may learn from successful interactions over time, but does not retain memory within a single conversation. That means a team should not assume it can safely carry context from an earlier exchange into a later one. Design escalation and conversation flows around what the product documents, then test the specific cases where customer context matters.

Consider Fin if: Intercom is already central to support, you want to govern knowledge and audience rules in that environment, and your source mix matches the integrations and content types documented by Intercom. Confirm sync timing and plan eligibility with the vendor for your workspace.

2. Zendesk AI agents: for activated Zendesk Help Centers

Zendesk AI agents are a natural candidate for organizations that already maintain an activated Zendesk Help Center. Zendesk says teams can connect that Help Center and external knowledge sources using a crawler or connector, and can combine multiple sources. The product’s requirement for an activated Help Center makes it a less straightforward fit for a company that has no Zendesk knowledge base.

The distinction between internal and external content affects answer freshness. Zendesk says Help Center content is searched as it exists at query time, whereas external content is used as of its latest sync, usually every 24 hours. That is a documented typical cadence, not a guarantee that every connector or account updates on an identical schedule. Check your source’s sync status and test after editing an important policy.

Zendesk explicitly says AI agents do not search live data or the internet in real time. External information therefore depends on connected sources and their latest synchronization, rather than a live web lookup. This can make source selection and maintenance more important than simply adding a broad list of websites.

Permissions are another key detail. Zendesk says restricted article permissions are respected: authenticated users may receive relevant restricted content, while unauthenticated users can use public articles only. That behavior should be validated with test accounts representing the actual customer groups who will use the bot.

Zendesk warns that too many sources can reduce accuracy and increase latency. The same knowledge-source guidance notes that plan eligibility may differ for some customers who purchased older Advanced AI agent offerings. Review Zendesk’s explanation of external search and its setup guide with your specific product edition in mind.

Consider Zendesk if: the Help Center is an established source of truth, you need to pair it with selected external knowledge, and your team can verify permissions and sync behavior. Avoid assuming it can fetch current facts from arbitrary websites at response time.

3. Gorgias AI Agent: for Shopify-oriented ecommerce support

Gorgias has the clearest ecommerce-specific fit among these options. Its AI Agent documentation describes using Shopify orders, customer data, and products alongside Help Center articles, public website and catalog content, custom guidance, uploaded documents, and connected actions such as returns. This combination can let an agent respond with store context rather than relying on a policy article alone.

That distinction separates a FAQ retriever from a commerce support agent. A policy may explain the return window; order information can help establish what a particular customer bought, while a connected action may support the next step in a return workflow. The added context is useful for store operations, but it does not make the product automatically superior for general-purpose support outside that use case.

Gorgias describes a second-model quality check and confidence threshold. Its documentation says that if the AI Agent cannot find an answer, it will not respond; when safeguards do not permit a response, the ticket can be handed to a human. Automated messages are labeled and can be reviewed with their sources, providing a way for staff to inspect what informed an answer.

Gorgias’s privacy FAQ says customer data accessed by the AI Agent is not used to train external LLM providers, while also acknowledging that AI cannot be perfect. Review the vendor’s current AI Agent security and privacy FAQ for the relevant handling details and your organization’s requirements.

Consider Gorgias if: Shopify workflows, customer and order context, and ecommerce actions are central to the support workload. If your main need is answering general questions from a broad enterprise knowledge base, compare its available sources and actions against that specific requirement.

How to choose and validate a help-center chatbot

Start with the sources and customer situations the bot must handle, not with the broadest feature list. A practical evaluation should include both ordinary questions and the failure cases that could expose stale or restricted information.

  1. Map your content. List public help articles, private/internal instructions, web pages, documents, snippets, and any order or account data the bot would need. Mark which sources are authoritative and who owns updates.
  2. Check the native fit. Identify whether your current service desk or commerce platform is already supported. A native knowledge workflow can reduce setup work, but only if it covers the content and customer context you actually need.
  3. Verify ingestion and freshness. Ask whether each source is live, imported, indexed, periodically synced, or manually refreshed. Test an edited article and an external-source update to learn when the changed answer becomes available.
  4. Test permissions deliberately. Use public, authenticated, and restricted-content scenarios. Confirm that an unauthenticated visitor cannot receive content intended only for signed-in customers or staff.
  5. Define uncertainty and handoff. Decide which subjects require a person, what the agent should do when it cannot find support for an answer, and whether sensitive topics need a specific escalation path.
  6. Run a representative pilot. Use historical questions and include ambiguous wording, missing information, outdated articles, restricted material, and requests that should reach an agent. Review answers and source evidence rather than relying on a vendor’s general performance claim.
  7. Calculate total cost and operating effort. Request a current quote for the required edition and expected usage, and include the staff time needed to curate content, monitor handoffs, and correct gaps. The reviewed documentation does not establish comparable current prices or resolution outcomes.

For a fair comparison, score each product against the same questions and acceptance rules. Track whether the answer was supported by an approved source, whether it respected access rules, whether it surfaced uncertainty appropriately, and whether the handoff reached the right team. A short pilot cannot establish universal accuracy, but it can show how the configuration performs on your own knowledge and support patterns.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Treating “AI trained on our docs” as a precise technical description. Ask whether the system retrieves or syncs content and how source updates reach answers.
  • Assuming a published edit is immediately available everywhere. Native and external sources can have different update paths and timing.
  • Connecting every possible source. Zendesk specifically cautions that excessive sources can harm accuracy and increase latency; prioritize trusted, relevant material.
  • Ignoring audience boundaries. Test authentication and article permissions with accounts that reflect real customer access.
  • Evaluating only the happy path. Include unclear, sensitive, unsupported, and action-oriented requests to see whether the system answers, declines, or transfers the interaction.
  • Choosing based on an unverified winner claim. The available product documentation establishes features but not an independent performance ranking among these agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these chatbots train a custom AI model on our help articles?

Not necessarily. The phrase “learns from your help center” can refer to retrieving from connected or synchronized knowledge rather than training a model on company documents. Ask each vendor how content is ingested and refreshed.

Which option is best for a Shopify store?

Gorgias is the clearest Shopify-oriented option in this comparison because its AI Agent documentation describes using Shopify order, customer, and product context as well as support knowledge and connected actions. Whether it fits depends on your workflows and pilot results.

Can Zendesk AI agents answer from the live internet?

No. Zendesk says its AI agents do not search the live internet in real time; they use Help Center content and connected external sources as available through their latest sync.
