If you want uninterrupted co-op in a FromSoftware game, the practical choices are game-specific mods: Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin Seamless Co-op if you want to stay with DS2, Dark Souls III Seamless Co-op for a separate DS3 playthrough, and Elden Ring Seamless Co-op for Elden Ring. They are not interchangeable downloads: an Elden Ring mod cannot add co-op to DS2, and a DS3 mod cannot run inside Elden Ring. The DS2 project currently documented for PC is an alpha release for the 64-bit Scholar of the First Sin edition, while the DS3 project also carries an alpha warning. The Elden Ring project advertises persistent sessions for up to six players. Confirm the current mod release and supported game version immediately before installing, because these projects change independently of the games.
What are the real alternatives to Dark Souls 2 Seamless Co-op?
The alternatives fall into two categories: another mod for the same game, or a seamless-co-op mod for a different FromSoftware game. For DS2 itself, the currently documented option is a Scholar of the First Sin PC mod. For a different game, the clearest established projects are Dark Souls III Seamless Co-op and Elden Ring Seamless Co-op. A separate DS2 GitHub experiment exists, but its maintainer explicitly says it is not release-ready, so it should not be treated as a usable replacement.
Every option is tied to a particular executable and edition. You must own and run the matching game, install the matching mod build, and have every player on compatible versions. “Seamless co-op” describes a design goal—fewer session boundaries and more continuous play—not a universal FromSoftware multiplayer layer.

Can I use the DS2 Scholar of the First Sin mod if I want to keep playing Dark Souls 2?
Yes. The Scholar of the First Sin Seamless Co-op project is the closest direct alternative because it targets DS2 itself. Its page describes a host-and-guest structure in which up to five other players can join, for a maximum party of six, with continuous play and fewer of the normal multiplayer boundaries. It is specifically for the 64-bit PC version of Scholar of the First Sin, not the original 32-bit Dark Souls II release.
What the DS2 project is designed to change
- Longer shared sessions: The project aims to keep players together rather than repeatedly ending a session at conventional multiplayer boundaries.
- Shared progress: Its page describes progress continuing for the participating players, subject to the mod’s current implementation.
- Larger parties: The stated limit is one host plus up to five other players.
- Version discipline: Everyone needs a compatible game build and the same mod version.
What “alpha” means for a DS2 player
The Nexus page labels the mod alpha and warns that bugs are likely. That warning matters more than the headline player count: an alpha mod can have broken progression, desynchronization, crashes, or features that behave differently after a game update. Treat it as an experimental way to play with friends, not as a guaranteed replacement for the game’s supported multiplayer.
The page lists version v0.0.5 and an update date of October 4, 2026. Those details are a snapshot, not a promise that v0.0.5 will remain current. Before downloading, open the project page and check the latest file, changelog, supported executable, and any installation notes.
Who should choose it?
Choose this project when your priority is staying in DS2 and your group accepts alpha software. It is the only option in this comparison that targets Scholar of the First Sin directly. If one friend owns the original 32-bit release, that person cannot use the Scholar-specific build without moving to the supported edition.
Is Dark Souls III Seamless Co-op a good alternative?
Dark Souls III Seamless Co-op is a separate project for Dark Souls III, not an add-on for DS2. It is the logical choice when your group wants the older, more compact world design and combat of DS3 while retaining a seamless-style session. The project page identifies game version 1.15.2 as its target.

What is established about the DS3 project
- It exists as its own DS3 mod and requires Dark Souls III.
- The project page labels it alpha and warns that bugs are likely.
- Game version 1.15.2 is named as the supported version on the page.
- The available information does not establish a current release number or a complete feature-by-feature comparison with the DS2 and Elden Ring projects.
That last point is important. Do not infer that DS3 has the same party limit, save behavior, or progression handling as the other projects. Use only the features documented for the DS3 build you are installing, and read its current instructions for restrictions.
When DS3 makes more sense than DS2
DS3 is a better fit if your friends already own it, want a different campaign, or prefer its faster combat and interconnected areas. It is not a technical upgrade for DS2: installing it means buying or launching a different game and starting a separate character and progression path. The mod also remains alpha, so a stable DS3 game does not make the multiplayer modification stable.
What does Elden Ring Seamless Co-op offer?
Elden Ring Seamless Co-op is the most expansive game change among these choices because it moves the group into Elden Ring’s open world. The project’s own site claims persistent sessions and support for up to six players. It also tells players to use matching game and mod versions.
Why groups choose Elden Ring
- Persistent-session design: The project advertises sessions that continue instead of repeatedly returning players to separate worlds.
- Large party: The stated maximum is six players, including the host.
- Open-world campaign: Exploration, optional areas, and route planning give a group more freedom than the mostly linear progression of the earlier games.
What to verify before a session
Feature descriptions on the project site are claims by the maintainers, not independent test results. Check the current download, supported Elden Ring game version, mod version, and installation requirements on the project site immediately before your first session. If the game updates and the mod does not, wait for a compatible release rather than assuming an older build will work.
Elden Ring Seamless Co-op cannot be installed into Dark Souls II or Dark Souls III. It is an alternative in the sense that it offers a different FromSoftware game with a similar co-op goal, not in the sense of converting DS2’s executable.

Should you use the separate DS2 scheissgeist/Seamless project?
No, not as a ready-to-play alternative. The project’s README describes a private-server approach, but it also explicitly says the project is not release-ready. It lists synchronization and persistence features that do not yet work, which are precisely the systems a seamless co-op mod must get right.
Recommended Free Tools
That project should be understood as development work for technically curious readers, not as a second released DS2 option. Do not confuse its repository with the Scholar of the First Sin Nexus release. They have different maintainers, different statuses, and different expectations.
How do the options compare side by side?
Use this table to narrow the choice before you download anything. “Not stated” means the available project information does not establish the value; it is not permission to assume the projects behave the same.
| Decision point | DS2 Scholar of the First Sin | Dark Souls III | Elden Ring | scheissgeist/Seamless |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runs in | Scholar of the First Sin, 64-bit PC | Dark Souls III | Elden Ring | DS2-focused experimental project |
| Status | Alpha | Alpha | Current status must be checked on the project site | Not release-ready |
| Documented version | v0.0.5 listed; updated October 4, 2026 | Game version 1.15.2 | Use matching current game and mod versions | Not stated as a released build |
| Party limit claimed by project | Host plus up to five others (six total) | Not stated | Up to six players | Not established |
| Session goal | Continuous play and fewer common boundaries | Seamless-style DS3 sessions; detailed feature set not established | Persistent sessions | Planned private-server model |
| Best use | Stay in DS2 with Scholar ownership | Play a separate DS3 campaign | Play a large open-world campaign together | Observe development, not organize a normal group session |
Which mod should your group choose?
Start with the game your entire group owns and wants to play. Then apply the compatibility and risk checks below.
Choose DS2 Scholar of the First Sin when…
- Everyone has the 64-bit Scholar of the First Sin PC edition.
- You want to preserve DS2’s characters, areas, enemies, and progression style.
- Your group can tolerate alpha bugs and can coordinate updates.
- A party of up to six matches your planned group size.
Choose DS3 when…
- Your group prefers DS3 and already has compatible installations.
- You are comfortable targeting the project’s documented game version, 1.15.2.
- You accept that the mod is alpha and that its current feature list is narrower than the claims published for the other projects.
Choose Elden Ring when…
- Your group wants an open-world campaign rather than another DS2 run.
- You need the project’s advertised six-player capacity.
- Everyone can keep the game and mod builds synchronized.
Do not choose the separate DS2 GitHub project when…
- You need a supported download for a planned weekend session.
- You depend on working persistence or synchronization.
- You are not prepared to debug unfinished software.
How should you prepare a group before installing?
Most failures happen because one player has a different game edition, patch, or mod build. Agree on the target before anyone copies files.

- Name the exact game and edition. Write “Scholar of the First Sin, 64-bit PC,” “Dark Souls III,” or “Elden Ring” in your group chat. Do not use “DS2” as shorthand when some players own the original 32-bit release.
- Check the project’s current compatibility note. Record the supported game version, mod version, and any loader or dependency listed on the current project page.
- Standardize game updates. If one installation has auto-updated and the mod page has not added support, pause the session. Do not mix an updated executable with an older mod simply because the filenames look similar.
- Back up unmodded files and saves. Keep a clean installation or a documented way to verify the game files. Back up saves before the first launch with an alpha mod.
- Install to every player’s matching game. A mod for one title cannot be copied into another title to add cross-game co-op.
- Read the project’s launch and networking instructions together. Use the same sequence for the host and every guest; small differences can look like a network failure.
- Test with one friend first. Confirm that a two-person session can connect, load an area, save or exit as documented, and reconnect before inviting the full party.
What should you do when a seamless session fails?
Treat compatibility as the first suspect, then isolate networking and save-state problems. Alpha projects can fail in ways that do not produce a useful error message.
The game does not launch
- Confirm that the mod matches the exact game and edition.
- Check whether the game patched after the mod release.
- Remove duplicate loaders or old files from previous mod experiments.
- Restore the clean game files you backed up, then reinstall one documented build rather than layering several versions.
Players cannot join the host
- Compare every player’s game version and mod version character by character.
- Have everyone close the game and start it through the same documented launch method.
- Test a two-player connection before adding more guests.
- Check the project’s current connection instructions; do not substitute assumptions from another game’s mod.
The group desynchronizes or loses progress
Stop advancing important areas until you know which save and persistence behavior the current build supports. Record the exact location, player count, and action that preceded the problem, then consult the project’s issue tracker or release notes. For the unfinished DS2 GitHub project, missing synchronization and persistence are documented limitations, not faults you should expect to fix through a routine reinstall.
A game update breaks the mod
Do not ask one player to downgrade informally while the rest remain current. Wait for a mod build that names the new game version, or coordinate a clean rollback only if the project’s instructions explicitly support it. Keep the old installer and backups until the group has completed its campaign.
What claims should you treat cautiously?
Project pages are the authoritative place for each mod’s own feature claims, but they are not independent benchmarks. “Up to six players” is a stated limit, not evidence that six-player sessions are always stable. “Persistent” or “continuous” describes the intended behavior; alpha warnings mean the implementation can still fail in particular areas or after updates.
The available information also does not establish a complete catalog of every current FromSoftware co-op mod. These are the clearest options identified for this comparison, not a guarantee that no other project exists. If your group is considering a different repository, verify its maintainer, release status, supported game version, and whether it is a playable release rather than a prototype.

What is the safest way to return to unmodded play?
Close the modded game, restore the clean files or use the game platform’s file-verification process, and keep modded and unmodded saves separated when the project’s instructions recommend it. Never delete the only copy of a save while troubleshooting. If the mod has its own launcher or profile system, use that system’s documented uninstall procedure instead of manually deleting random files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Dark Souls 2 mod let me play with friends who only own Dark Souls 3?
No. The mods operate inside different games, so each player must own and run the same title and compatible edition. A DS2 group needs the same DS2 build; a DS3 group needs Dark Souls III and its supported version.
Does the Scholar of the First Sin mod work with the original 32-bit Dark Souls II release?
The documented project targets the 64-bit PC Scholar of the First Sin edition. The original 32-bit release is outside that stated support, so do not install the Scholar build expecting it to work.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Are six-player limits guaranteed in every area?
No. Six is a maximum claimed by the DS2 and Elden Ring project pages, not a stability guarantee for every location, update, or party composition. Alpha software can impose practical limits even when the advertised maximum is higher.
What should I do if a friend’s game updated automatically?
Pause the group session and compare the new game version with the mod’s compatibility note. Keep everyone on a documented matching combination; mixing an updated game with an older unsupported mod is more likely to create launch or synchronization failures.
