There is no universal best controller preset for competitive play. Start with your game’s defaults, tune one setting at a time, and keep the lowest stick deadzone that gives stable input without unwanted movement. The right curve, trigger travel, and button mapping depend on the game and on what you want to improve.

Start with a baseline before changing settings

Record your game’s look sensitivity, aim-response curve, and deadzone before you adjust the controller. Many games provide their own aiming controls, while both controllers add another layer of customization. Changing both at once makes it harder to tell which setting helped or caused a problem.

  1. Write down the game’s current sensitivity, response curve, and deadzone.
  2. Check whether the game and controller each apply a curve or deadzone.
  3. Change one controller setting, then test it in the game before changing another.
  4. Save a baseline profile so you can return to the original setup.

This is a practical tuning method, not a claim that one preset has been proven superior in comparative testing.

Choose a stick curve to address a specific aiming problem

DualSense Edge curves

On DualSense Edge, Sony provides six named stick curves. Their labels describe how input responds to stick movement; they are not rankings of aim quality.

  • Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
  • Default: input remains proportional to stick movement.
  • Quick: registered input accelerates as you tilt the stick.
  • Precise: registers minimum input for more controlled movement.
  • Steady: limits the response at larger stick tilts.
  • Dynamic: limits response near the endpoints while accelerating input in the middle.
  • Digital: approaches maximum input from a slight stick tilt.

Compare a curve with Default in the controller test and in your game. The curve names and descriptions are in Sony’s DualSense Edge PC guide.

Xbox Elite Series 2 curves

Use the Xbox Accessories app to experiment with the Elite Series 2’s stick curves. Xbox’s 2019 setup advice suggests diagnosing the result by asking, “Do you overshoot or stop short when aiming?” Treat that as a useful way to frame a test, not as a universal prescription for a particular curve. Keep your original profile available so you can undo a change. See Xbox’s Elite Series 2 launch advice.

Set the deadzone as low as stability allows

A stick deadzone is the movement threshold before the controller registers input. Reduce it gradually until the stick starts producing movement you do not intend, then raise it slightly until the input is stable. There is no universal deadzone percentage established for these controllers or for competitive games; the right point depends on the game and the individual stick.

If an Elite Series 2 responds inconsistently, Xbox says its calibration feature may help with some issues. Calibration is not a guaranteed fix for drift caused by normal wear. Xbox announced calibration tools in its November 2024 update.

Adjust trigger travel for the game, not by habit

A shorter trigger stop can reduce the distance needed to press a trigger, which may suit a game where a fast, digital-like input matters. Longer travel can be more appropriate when a game responds to graduated trigger pressure or when you want to preserve its normal trigger behavior.

DualSense Edge

Edge lets you set trigger input ranges and choose long, medium, or short physical stops. There is a trade-off: Sony says trigger effects do not work when the physical stops are set to medium or short. Check the game’s trigger behavior before choosing a stop; details are in Sony’s guide.

Xbox Elite Series 2

The Elite Series 2 has physical hair-trigger locks and app-based trigger settings. Xbox’s 2019 launch advice offered a trigger deadzone of 1–2 as an example for certain competitive shooters, while noting that games needing gradual trigger pressure may work better with default settings. This is dated Xbox advice, not a setting that should be carried over to every game or controller.

Map rear buttons only when the layout helps

DualSense Edge has remappable rear buttons, and the Elite Series 2 has four assignable paddles. A rear input can let you perform an action without moving your thumb from a stick, but neither manufacturer establishes one mapping as best for every player or game. Map only actions supported by the game, choose a layout you can reach comfortably, and practise it before relying on it in competition. See the DualSense Edge product page and the Elite Series 2 product page for hardware features.

Save a profile for each game or meaningful setup

Separate profiles make it easier to use different curves, deadzones, triggers, and button assignments without losing a working setup.

  • DualSense Edge: Sony’s Windows guide says the controller stores up to four profiles, including the default. Edge profiles can include stick sensitivity and deadzone, button assignments, and trigger settings. Profile setup is also covered by PlayStation Support.
  • Xbox Elite Series 2: Xbox lists up to three custom profiles plus the default. The Accessories app supports mapping and profile features on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11.

Choose separate profiles when a game’s aiming behavior or control needs differ; avoid changing multiple settings in a single profile at once while you are still figuring out what works.

When a game has its own recommended setup

Game-specific recommendations can be useful starting points, but they should not be generalized to other titles. For example, a PlayStation Blog post dated April 28, 2026, reports Bungie recommendations for Marathon: Precise on the right stick and Quick on the left, a medium or short R2 trigger stop, and an L2 range of 0–70 for Marathon’s ADS behavior. Those settings address that game’s controls; they do not establish a universal Edge preset. Read the Marathon recommendations alongside the game’s own aim settings.

Frequently asked setup questions

Which stick curve should I use for FPS games?

Start with the game’s default and test a different curve only to address a specific aiming issue. Curve labels describe input response, not guaranteed performance. Keep the game’s own response curve in view while testing.

How do I stop stick drift?

First check whether the game’s deadzone can be raised enough to prevent unwanted movement. On Elite Series 2, Xbox says calibration may help some inconsistent input but may not fix drift caused by normal wear. The available evidence does not establish calibration as a universal drift repair.
