Dropbox Backup is the clearest fit when you need to choose arbitrary folders on a computer, while OneDrive is better when the folders you need are its supported Windows or macOS standard folders. These products do not offer the same feature: selective sync normally chooses which folders already stored in the cloud are downloaded to a particular computer, whereas folder backup uploads local folders to the cloud. IDrive’s documented control is selective sync rather than proof of arbitrary local-folder backup, and Google’s surfaced workflow applies to Google Photos folders, not every file type.
The right choice depends first on your operating system and the exact folders you want to protect. Use the comparison and setup instructions below to verify eligibility before moving important data.
Which cloud storage services can back up selected folders?
Among the services covered by current product documentation, Dropbox Backup has the broadest documented folder-selection workflow. It lets you choose folders from a computer during setup and also describes selecting folders on an external drive, subject to drive and app limitations. OneDrive supports backup of defined standard folders, with different procedures and restrictions on Windows and macOS. IDrive’s cited documentation describes choosing cloud folders for local synchronization, not selecting any local path for backup. Google’s relevant help page concerns photo and video folders in Google Photos.

Online-only items may need to be downloaded. |
| Microsoft OneDrive | Backs up eligible standard folders through Manage backup. | Windows and macOS use different workflows. macOS requires the standalone sync app and Full Disk Access; work or school administrators can disable the feature. | It is not documented here as a general arbitrary-path backup tool. macOS guidance specifically names Desktop and Documents. |
| IDrive | Selective sync chooses folders in IDrive Cloud Drive to keep on a computer. | Deselected cloud folders remain available on the web and other linked devices. | This documentation does not establish backup of arbitrary local folders. |
| Google Photos through Drive for desktop | Stops backup for a selected photo folder. | The help result records a product change dated August 10, 2026. | It covers photos and videos, not general Google Drive file backup. |
Feature names can change as desktop applications are updated. Before committing a large backup, open the current app and confirm that the folder-selection screen shows the path you need.

What is the difference between folder backup and selective sync?
Folder backup starts with a local folder and copies its contents to cloud storage. Selective sync starts with folders already in cloud storage and controls which of them occupy space on a particular computer. Treating the two as interchangeable is the most common source of an unprotected folder.
Local-folder backup
With backup, you point the service at folders on your computer. The service watches those locations and uploads their contents according to its backup rules. The cloud copy is intended to remain available even when the local computer is offline or the local folder is no longer present, although the exact deletion and retention behavior must be checked in the service’s current documentation.
Selective sync
Selective sync is a storage-management control. Dropbox describes it as choosing which folders stored in Dropbox remain on a computer, with preferences unique to each computer. OneDrive’s Choose folders setting similarly controls which existing OneDrive folders are synchronized to a Windows or macOS computer. Unchecking a folder removes its local copy while leaving it online; it does not upload an unrelated local folder.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why the distinction matters
- A folder outside a service’s cloud-synced directory may not be protected merely because selective sync is enabled.
- Removing a cloud folder from local sync normally frees disk space but does not delete the online folder.
- Backup and sync can interact. Dropbox says that, in its updated Backup experience, folders unchecked in selective sync are not backed up, so the current app settings must be reviewed together.
How do I back up standard folders with OneDrive on Windows?
On Windows, OneDrive’s documented backup workflow covers eligible standard folders rather than every path you can choose. Use the OneDrive settings panel and the Manage backup control.
- Open the OneDrive desktop application’s settings.
- Select Sync and backup.
- Choose Manage backup.
- Review the folders that OneDrive marks as eligible and toggle on the folders you want protected.
- Leave the computer connected while the initial upload runs, then verify that the files appear in your OneDrive account.
The eligibility list is the boundary of this workflow. If the folder you need is a custom location, a second internal drive, or an external volume and it does not appear in Manage backup, do not assume that choosing a similarly named cloud folder will protect it. Use a service that documents arbitrary local-folder selection or move the data into a supported location only after considering how that changes your local file organization.
How does OneDrive Choose folders differ on Windows?
OneDrive’s Choose folders control is separate from Manage backup. It determines which folders that already exist in OneDrive are downloaded or retained on this Windows computer. Unchecking a folder removes it from the computer but leaves it online, and the setting is specific to the computer and account. Some important folders cannot be unchecked.

How do I set up OneDrive folder backup on macOS?
On macOS, Microsoft documents a Backup tab and a Manage backup control for important folders, with Desktop and Documents specifically identified. The Mac workflow has prerequisites that do not apply in the same way to Windows.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Install and open the standalone OneDrive sync application; the web interface alone is not the documented setup path.
- Grant OneDrive Full Disk Access in macOS privacy and security settings when prompted.
- Open OneDrive settings and select the Backup tab.
- Choose Manage backup and enable the supported folders, such as Desktop or Documents.
- Allow synchronization to finish, then check the OneDrive web view for representative files.
Work and school accounts can be different: an organization’s administrator may disable folder backup. If the Backup tab or Manage backup control is missing, ask the administrator whether the policy is intentional before changing permissions or reinstalling the app.
What happens when Mac folder backup is stopped?
Microsoft says files already in OneDrive remain there when Mac folder backup is stopped. If you want those files back in the original local folder, you may need to move them manually. Stopping the workflow therefore changes where new local changes are protected; it is not the same as deleting the existing cloud copy.
What does OneDrive Choose folders do on a Mac?
Choose folders remains a cloud-folder download control, separate from the Backup tab. It can remove an online folder from this Mac while leaving it available online and on other linked computers. The choice applies to that computer and account, not automatically to every device.
How does Dropbox Backup handle selected computer folders?
Dropbox Backup is the most direct match when your requirement is “choose these folders on my computer.” Its setup flow allows folder selection, and the updated Backup experience describes selecting additional folders inside the computer’s home folder, including subfolders.
- Open the Dropbox desktop application and start its Backup setup.
- When the app lists locations, select the computer folders you want included. The FAQ also describes selecting folders from an external drive during setup.
- Review the selected paths and any folders the app excludes by default before confirming.
- Complete the setup and use Dropbox’s backup view to confirm that files are arriving.
- Check the app’s scheduling and restoration controls so you know how to recover a folder if the computer is lost or replaced.
Which drives does Dropbox Backup include?
The documented computer-backup setup is limited to the hard drive that contains the Dropbox desktop application. Other installed drives are not included under that described arrangement. Although the FAQ discusses selecting folders on an external hard drive, you should read the current setup screen carefully and confirm that the external volume remains connected and eligible after configuration.

How do selective sync and Dropbox Backup interact?
Dropbox selective sync is a separate feature available to Dropbox users, including Basic accounts. It works at the folder level rather than the individual-file level and has preferences unique to each computer. It chooses which Dropbox folders are stored locally to save disk space.
Dropbox says the updated Backup experience does not back up folders that are unchecked in selective sync. It also says online-only files and folders may be downloaded to the computer when the backup updates. That means a space-saving setting can affect backup scope, and a large online-only folder can temporarily require local disk capacity. Check both panels in the current app instead of following an older screenshot or guide.
What if a Dropbox backup stops updating?
The FAQ warns that a computer backup may stop updating after an error. Treat a stale timestamp or missing recent file as a failure, not as proof that the service is still protecting the folder. Reopen the Dropbox app, look for its error message, confirm the source drive is mounted and available, and resolve the reported issue before relying on the backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs IDrive’s selective sync enough to back up any local folder?
No. The cited IDrive documentation establishes selective synchronization for folders in IDrive Cloud Drive. You can choose which cloud folders appear in the local Cloud Drive folder; deselected folders remain accessible through the web interface and other linked devices. That is useful for controlling local disk use, but it does not by itself document backup of arbitrary folders elsewhere on your computer.
When is this feature useful?
It is useful when your files are already organized inside IDrive Cloud Drive and you want some of those cloud folders available offline on one computer but not another. It is not a sufficient answer if your requirement is to leave an existing folder in place—such as a project directory outside the cloud-drive location—and have the service monitor it automatically.
What should you verify before choosing IDrive?
- Find the product’s current backup documentation for your operating system, not only the selective-sync FAQ.
- Confirm whether the exact local path can be selected as a backup source.
- Check what happens when a cloud folder is deselected from the computer and where the online copy remains.
Does Google’s folder setting back up general files?
The surfaced Google One help workflow is specifically for photos and videos backed up to Google Photos through Drive for desktop. It should not be generalized to documents, application data, or arbitrary file types without separate documentation.

In that photo workflow, stopping backup for a specific folder prevents future uploads from that folder. Photos already in Google Photos remain there unless you delete them separately. The help result records an August 10, 2026 change, so users should confirm that the current Drive for desktop and Google Photos screens use the same labels before changing a production photo library.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When does this make sense?
Use it when your goal is to stop sending a particular local photo folder to Google Photos while retaining photos that have already uploaded. Choose a different service and workflow for general selected-folder backup, especially when the source contains mixed file types.
Which service should you choose for your folders?
Start with the source path, then the operating system, then account restrictions. The following decision framework avoids choosing a product based only on the word “sync.”
| Your requirement | Best documented fit | Why | Verify before setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Select several existing folders on one computer | Dropbox Backup | Its setup explicitly supports choosing computer folders, and the updated experience describes more home-folder subfolders. | Drive scope, excluded folders, online-only files and current interface. |
| Protect Windows Desktop, Documents or other eligible standard folders | OneDrive | Manage backup is built around supported standard folders. | Whether the desired folder is listed as eligible. |
| Protect Mac Desktop or Documents with a personal account | OneDrive, if the prerequisites are met | Microsoft documents a Mac Backup tab and Manage backup workflow. | Standalone app, Full Disk Access and any administrator policy. |
| Keep only selected cloud folders on a computer | Dropbox or OneDrive selective-sync controls; IDrive Cloud Drive selective sync for files already there | These controls manage local copies of cloud content. | Remember that this is not arbitrary local-folder backup. |
| Stop uploading a particular photo folder | Google Photos folder-backup control | The documented workflow is designed for photos and videos. | Existing photos remain online after stopping future uploads. |
No single option in the documentation covers every path, operating system and account type. If you need an external drive, a custom directory and a work account simultaneously, test that combination in the actual desktop app before migrating your protection plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you validate a selected-folder backup?
A setup screen is not enough. Validate the source path, cloud result and recovery route before trusting the service with irreplaceable files.
- Write down the exact source path. Include the drive name and the parent folder so a similarly named cloud folder cannot fool you.
- Place a small test file inside the selected folder. Use a harmless filename and note when you created it.
- Wait for the desktop app to report completion. If the service shows an error, an online-only state or a paused drive, resolve that first.
- Check the web account. Locate the test file in the backup or cloud view and confirm its recent timestamp.
- Test a second device or clean location. Download or restore a copy to verify that the cloud item is usable, not merely listed.
- Record what stopping means. Note whether files remain online, whether local files must be moved manually, and whether a stopped folder can be re-enabled without creating duplicates.
Repeat the check after changing selective-sync settings, replacing a drive, upgrading the desktop app or switching between personal and organizational accounts.

What are the main failure modes?
The folder is missing from the setup screen
OneDrive may be limiting you to eligible standard folders, or an administrator may have disabled Mac backup. Dropbox may be excluding a drive or a folder under its current rules. Do not substitute a cloud folder with the same name; confirm that the source path itself is selected.
Recent files are not appearing
Check for a paused or errored desktop app, an unavailable source drive, an online-only item that has not been downloaded, or a folder excluded by selective sync. Dropbox specifically warns that an error can stop a computer backup from updating.
The cloud copy disappeared from the computer
Look first at selective sync or OneDrive Choose folders. Those settings can remove local copies while leaving the data online. Use the web account to distinguish a local-sync change from an actual cloud deletion.
Stopping backup changed the local folder
On macOS OneDrive, files already in OneDrive remain there and may need to be moved manually to restore the original local arrangement. For Google Photos, stopping a folder prevents future uploads but leaves existing photos in Google Photos. Other products’ exact behavior is version-dependent, so read the confirmation dialog before accepting it.
What should you remember about cloud backup?
Choose based on the documented source scope, not the product’s general reputation. Dropbox Backup is the strongest documented option for selecting computer folders; OneDrive is appropriate when its supported Windows or macOS folders match your needs. IDrive’s cited feature is cloud-folder selective sync, and Google’s cited control is a photo-specific upload switch. Keep backup, synchronization and local disk-saving controls separate in your plan, and verify one real file from each protected folder before you rely on the arrangement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I back up a folder on an external drive with these services?
Dropbox’s setup FAQ discusses selecting folders on an external drive, but the same documentation describes drive-scope limitations for computer backup. OneDrive’s documented workflows here focus on standard folders, so confirm external-volume support in the current app before depending on it.
Will turning off selective sync delete my online files?
The documented behavior for Dropbox and OneDrive is that an unchecked cloud folder is removed from that computer while remaining available online. This changes local storage, not the online location; still read the confirmation dialog because backup and deletion controls are separate.

Possibly, but an organization administrator may disable the feature. If the Backup tab or Manage backup control is unavailable, the account policy—not a missing macOS permission—may be the reason.
How can I tell whether a folder is really protected?
Create a small test file in the selected source folder, wait for the desktop app to report completion, and locate that file in the web account. Download or restore it to another location to verify that the cloud copy can actually be used.
