The best choice depends on what you want to see or change.
Choose by what you want to change
| Your goal | Best-fit option | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Improve contrast or use familiar colors | Built-in theme or custom theme | Claude Code interface colors |
| Keep session details visible | Custom status line | Information displayed alongside the terminal session |
| Get more explanation or coaching | Output style | Claude’s communication style |
| Run predictable actions at specific events | Hooks | Lifecycle behavior and automation |
| Add commands, integrations, or drawn terminal elements | Plugins and mods | Additional workflow features and terminal UI |
These are different customization layers, not a tested ranking of products. The comparison reflects the functions described in Anthropic’s guidance on Claude Code steering, its power-user tips, and community examples.
Change Claude Code’s colors with a theme
A theme changes Claude Code’s interface colors. It does not change your terminal emulator’s overall color scheme, which is configured separately. Anthropic documents theme and personalization controls in its Claude Code power-user tips; for version-specific commands and settings, check the current terminal configuration documentation.
Built-in presets
A community guide updated September 27, 2026, describes these presets: dark, light, dark-daltonized, light-daltonized, dark-ansi, and light-ansi, along with an auto choice. The guide says ANSI variants use the terminal’s standard ANSI palette. These implementation details come from the guide rather than an independently verified current product test, so confirm the available choices in the official documentation for your installed version. See Claude Code Themes: Customize Your Terminal Colors.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Daltonized presets are intended to help distinguish colors, including status colors, but no preset can guarantee accessibility for every display or person. Check the actual contrast and color distinctions in your terminal.
Custom theme files
If the presets do not fit, the same community guide describes JSON theme files in ~/.claude/themes/, with a theme name, a base preset, and token overrides. It gives Dracula, Catppuccin Mocha, and Nord as examples and says Claude Code watches theme files for changes. Verify the current file format and reload behavior against Anthropic’s terminal configuration reference before relying on them.

Custom tokens can cover the primary Claude accent, success, error and warning states, added and removed diff backgrounds, prompt border, plan-mode accent, and fullscreen message background. A custom file is useful when you need exact colors, a consistent team palette, or colors outside the terminal’s ANSI palette. If your terminal already has a palette you like, an ANSI-matching theme may mean fewer colors to maintain across two places; that is a practical trade-off, not a measured performance advantage.
Keep useful session information in a status line
If the problem is losing track of context while working, changing colors will not solve it. Anthropic’s power-user tips describe /statusline as a way to generate a custom status line from shell configuration. Possible details include the model, working directory, remaining context, or cost.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Choose only fields you will use. A status line crowded with details is harder to scan; a custom script also adds something to maintain if your workflow changes. Anthropic’s help page also documents /color, /keybindings, and /config among personalization controls. Labels and behavior can change as Claude Code releases frequently, so check the current documentation if a command behaves differently in your version.
Change how Claude communicates with an output style
Output styles affect Claude’s interaction, not the terminal palette. Anthropic describes an Explanatory style that explains frameworks and patterns, a Learning style that coaches through changes, and custom styles for adjusting Claude’s voice. Its guidance says styles can be selected in /config.

Pick this layer when you want a different balance of concise answers, explanation, or learning support. It is not a visualization add-on: output styles are injected at session start and use context, unlike hooks that can run lifecycle automation with low context cost, according to Anthropic’s June 18, 2026 steering guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use hooks for event-driven behavior
Hooks run in response to Claude Code lifecycle events, making them a better fit than a theme when you want an action to happen at a particular point in a workflow. Anthropic’s steering guide says hooks may be commands, HTTP endpoints, or LLM prompts. Command, HTTP, and MCP hooks execute deterministically; prompt and agent hooks use Claude’s judgment.

That distinction matters when reliability is important: choose a deterministic mechanism for an action that must follow a precise trigger, and review what the hook can access or modify before enabling it. Hooks are one of seven behavior-steering methods Anthropic lists alongside CLAUDE.md files, rules, skills, subagents, output styles, and appending the system prompt. They are workflow behavior, not a color theme.
Extend the terminal with plugins and mods
Plugins package additional capabilities rather than merely changing appearance. Anthropic’s October 9, 2025 plugin announcement describes collections that can include slash commands, subagents, MCP servers, and hooks, and says users can install them with /plugin, then enable or disable them. The announcement also describes use in terminal and VS Code. Because that announcement is dated and its beta or support status may have changed, check current documentation for present availability.
Some community projects go further by drawing terminal elements. The claude.dev mods showcase describes small TypeScript functions packaged in plugins that hook events, change behavior, and draw terminal UI. Its examples include a “Token weather” indicator above the prompt and “Next steps” suggestions. These are project examples, not built-in Claude Code dashboards or evidence that every mod is maintained, secure, compatible, or endorsed.
Before enabling a plugin or mod, consider its scope, compatibility with your Claude Code version, trustworthiness, and update cadence. A plugin can bundle useful UI with other behavior; inspect what it does and disable it if it adds more workflow complexity than value.

A practical way to decide
- For color only: start with a built-in theme. Move to a custom theme if you need specific tokens or a consistent palette; check the current official terminal configuration documentation for exact setup.
- For persistent context: configure a status line with only the fields you need, such as branch-relevant directory context or remaining context.
- For a different response style: select an output style in
/config; do not install a visualization plugin just to get more explanation. - For automation: use a hook tied to the event you care about, and review its implementation and permissions.
- For extra terminal UI or bundled workflow features: assess a plugin or mod as an extension, not as a guaranteed native feature.
