Duck.ai is the strongest hosted alternative to investigate if minimizing provider exposure is your priority. DuckDuckGo says it removes personal metadata before sending prompts to model providers, does not record or store chats by default, and has provider agreements that restrict training and retention. Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT can also be configured more privately, but each has important exceptions involving safety review, feedback, account activity, connected apps, or legal retention. None should be treated as absolutely private. The right choice depends on whether your main concern is IP-address exposure, model training, human review, long-term storage, or third-party integrations.
This guide compares the published consumer policies available on October 25, 2026. Capability, price, independent privacy audits, and practical performance were not established, so the comparison focuses on data handling rather than claiming one assistant is smarter or faster.
Which ChatGPT or Gemini alternative offers the strongest privacy?
For a hosted service, Duck.ai has the most privacy-oriented published design in this comparison: DuckDuckGo says it strips personal metadata before a request reaches the underlying model provider and that chats are not recorded or stored by default. Claude is a reasonable general-purpose option if you understand its deletion and safety-review rules. Gemini and ChatGPT provide useful controls, but their ordinary consumer settings can retain activity or permit model-improvement use unless you change them.

“Not used for training” is only one privacy attribute. A service may still retain a prompt for safety, allow a reviewer to see it, pass it to another processor, or connect it to an account and external apps. Evaluate all of those paths against your own threat model.

What does “more private” mean for an AI assistant?
Start by identifying the exposure you are trying to reduce. Someone concerned about targeted advertising may care mainly about account linking and personalization; a lawyer, clinician, or engineer may care about human review, provider access, retention, and contractual restrictions. A setting that solves one concern does not automatically solve the others.
Prompt routing and identifiers
Ask whether your prompt goes directly to the model company, through an intermediary, or through several connected services. Duck.ai says it removes personal metadata before forwarding a request. The other services in this comparison describe controls over storage and training, but the cited materials do not establish equivalent IP stripping.
Training and improvement
Training is a use of data, not the same thing as storage. Turning off improvement can stop a prompt from entering a training process while leaving short-term copies for response generation, abuse prevention, or feedback handling.
Retention and deletion
Look for the difference between deleting a conversation from a visible history and deleting backend copies. Policies commonly preserve data for safety, fraud prevention, legal obligations, or incident investigation even after a user presses Delete.
Human review and connected services
Human review can happen under a separate safety or quality process, and an assistant may send information to an integration you enabled. Treat calendar, drive, mail, browser, image, and file connections as additional data processors rather than as part of the assistant’s core privacy promise.
How does Duck.ai protect your privacy?
DuckDuckGo’s published description makes Duck.ai the clearest candidate for readers who want a hosted intermediary rather than a direct account with a model provider. It says chats are not recorded or stored by default, and that requests are anonymized before being sent to providers.

Duck.ai’s provider and model list can change. Check the current list and the applicable exceptions before relying on a particular model for sensitive work. Do not paste secrets merely because a service says it does not store ordinary chats.
How private is Claude for consumer users?
Anthropic’s cited consumer policy covers Claude Free, Pro, Max, and Claude Code accounts; it should not be assumed to cover Claude for Work or the API. Deleting a conversation removes it from chat history immediately and, according to Anthropic, from backend storage within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions.
Model-improvement setting
Anthropic says consumer chats are used for model improvement when you allow it, when content is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when the general improvement setting is enabled. If you permit improvement, qualifying data can remain de-identified in training pipelines for up to five years.
Safety retention
Anthropic describes separate retention for policy-violation cases: inputs and outputs may be retained for up to two years, while trust-and-safety classification scores may remain for up to seven years. Those periods are policy statements, not an independent audit of how every account is handled.
Practical Claude checklist
- Open the current account privacy or data controls and disable model improvement unless you have a reason to participate.
- Use an Incognito chat for a conversation that should not be used for improvement, while remembering that safety processing still applies.
- Delete completed conversations from history and allow for the stated backend deletion period.
- Keep regulated records, credentials, and unreleased intellectual property out of consumer chats unless your organization has verified the applicable contract and controls.
How do Gemini’s privacy settings work?
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated October 23, 2026, distinguishes signed-in Gemini Apps activity from signed-out use. With Keep Activity enabled, chats and shared content are saved in activity and may be used to provide, develop, and improve Google services, including generative-AI training.
Keep Activity enabled
The default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity is 18 months. Google says you can change it to three months, 36 months, or no automatic deletion. Changing the period affects activity management; it does not turn a chat into an unprocessed, zero-retention interaction.

Keep Activity disabled
When Keep Activity is off, future chats are not used to train Google’s AI unless you submit feedback. Google says those chats are nevertheless retained for 72 hours for responding, processing feedback, and safety purposes. Keep Activity off therefore reduces training and account-history exposure, but it is not an instant-deletion switch.
Human review and temporary chats
Google says a subset of Gemini chats is reviewed by human reviewers. Reviewed chats are disconnected from the account before being sent to service providers and can be retained for up to three years. Temporary chats are not used to improve Google AI with human reviewers, although Google says it may still use them to respond and protect users and the public.
Google’s own warning is direct: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” Connected apps and other Google services may apply separate data practices, so audit each connection rather than relying on the Gemini toggle alone.
Gemini checklist
- Open Gemini Apps Activity controls and decide whether Keep Activity should be on or off for your use case.
- If you leave it on, choose the shortest auto-delete period that still supports your workflow.
- Use temporary chats for work that should not improve Google AI through human review, but do not put confidential secrets into them.
- Avoid submitting feedback on a sensitive conversation when Keep Activity is off, because Google identifies feedback as an exception to the no-training setting.
- Review every connected app separately and revoke access you no longer need.
What privacy controls does ChatGPT provide?
OpenAI documents two consumer controls that matter most: opting out of model improvement and using Temporary Chat. Temporary Chat does not appear in history and is not used to train models. OpenAI’s consumer policy says deleted personal data is generally removed within 30 days, with exceptions for legal, safety, security, and other legitimate purposes.
The ordinary consumer service may use content for training unless you opt out. That rule should not be generalized to business offerings or the API, which are governed by separate terms. Before entering company or client data, confirm which product, workspace, account type, and contract you are actually using.
ChatGPT checklist
- In the current Data Controls or privacy settings, turn off the option that allows content to improve models.
- Start a Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation in normal history or training.
- Delete old conversations that no longer need to remain available and account for the stated exceptions to backend deletion.
- Check connected tools, custom instructions, and shared links for information that may persist outside the conversation itself.
Which service fits different sensitivity levels?
Use the least data exposure that still meets the task. Convenience and broad integration can be appropriate for ordinary brainstorming, while confidential work may require a contractually controlled environment or processing that never leaves your organization.

Low-sensitivity tasks
For public facts, outline ideas, or generic writing prompts, any of the four services can be practical. Keep training and history settings aligned with your preference, and avoid adding names, account numbers, unpublished details, or identifying context unnecessarily.
Personal information
For diary-like material, health questions, financial planning, or identifiable correspondence, Duck.ai’s stated metadata stripping and default non-storage are attractive. Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT can be used only after you configure their controls and accept the residual retention and review rules.
Confidential or regulated material
Do not assume a consumer privacy toggle satisfies professional confidentiality, data-residency, discovery, or regulatory requirements. Verify a business or API contract, retention schedule, access controls, and incident obligations with your organization; if those cannot be verified, keep the material out of a hosted assistant.
Highly sensitive secrets
Passwords, private keys, recovery codes, unreleased source code, protected health information, and information that could harm someone if exposed should not be pasted into a consumer chatbot. Redaction, synthetic examples, and local processing are safer starting points.
What are the most common privacy mistakes?
- Confusing deletion with disappearance: Removing a chat from history does not override safety, legal, or security exceptions.
- Assuming no training means no human access: Review and abuse-monitoring pathways can be separate from model improvement.
- Forgetting feedback: A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, report, or written comment can create a separate processing path.
- Uploading files casually: Moderation scanners and storage rules can differ from ordinary text-chat rules.

- Redact before upload: Replace real values with consistent placeholders and keep the mapping offline.
- Separate identities: Use an account that does not contain unnecessary profile information when your organization permits it.
- Disable unneeded connections: Revoke integrations and browser extensions that can read more context than the task requires.
- Choose the shortest practical retention: Turn off activity storage or select the shortest auto-delete period available.
- Do not provide feedback on sensitive prompts: Feedback may be handled under different improvement and review rules.
- Document the policy date: Record the service, account type, settings, and date you checked them so a later policy change does not go unnoticed.
- Delete local copies too: Browser history, downloaded exports, screenshots, synced files, and shared links can outlive the chatbot record.
Is local AI automatically more private?
Running a model on hardware you control can reduce the need to send prompts to a hosted provider, but “local” is not a complete privacy guarantee. Telemetry, update services, plug-ins, cloud backup, shared logs, and weak device security can still expose data. The available evidence does not establish a particular runtime, device, model, or performance level, so choose a local setup only after verifying where prompts, logs, updates, and crash reports go.

How often should you recheck these privacy settings?
At least review them whenever a provider changes its privacy notice, launches a new model, adds a connected app, changes account type, or introduces a feedback or personalization feature. Gemini’s cited materials were updated in October 2026, and Duck.ai’s provider/model list is explicitly changeable; labels and defaults can move even when the product name stays the same.
Before a sensitive project, verify five items in the current policy: where the prompt is sent, whether identifiers are removed, whether training is on by default, how long copies can remain, and who can review or receive the data. If any answer is unclear, use a less sensitive example or a processing path you control.
