Start with the Phone by Google app before installing anything. Its caller ID and spam protection can label suspicious calls and automatically block suspected spam, while Call Screen can question callers for you on supported phones and in supported regions. For a dedicated third-party caller-ID database with automatic spam, scam, and fraud blocking, Truecaller is the strongest fit in this comparison. Hiya and your mobile carrier’s call-filtering service are useful alternatives, particularly when they are already integrated with your phone.

No blocker catches every spoofed or newly created number. The most reliable setup combines filtering with cautious call handling: do not disclose passwords or one-time codes, do not move money because a caller creates urgency, and report suspicious calls.

Quick picks

Option Best for How it handles calls Important limits
Phone by Google Most Android owners who want a no-extra-app starting point Caller ID, spam labels, automatic blocking of suspected spam, and Call Screen on supported devices Features vary by handset, Android version, country, carrier, and language. Google says Scam Detection is Pixel-only.
Truecaller People who want a dedicated caller-ID and spam database Identifies callers; blocks spam, scam, and fraud calls; supports automatic spam blocking; includes Family Protection Requires accepting the app’s permissions and data practices. Subscription and feature availability can vary by region.
Hiya Reverse lookup and manual control over suspicious numbers Automatic spam detection, reverse lookup, spam-check dialer, blacklisting, reporting, and caller ID A Boulder County guide listed Hiya Premium at $3.99 per month historically; verify the current price in your store.
Carrier call filter Users who prefer network-level filtering from their mobile provider Carrier spam labels and blocking, usually with a free basic tier and paid advanced features Exact controls, names, prices, and availability depend on your carrier and country.

What to compare before choosing a blocker

“Best” depends on whether you want a call stopped automatically or an unknown caller questioned before your phone rings. Check these eight differences rather than relying only on an app’s download count:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Blocking versus screening: automatic blocking rejects or silences a call; interactive screening asks the caller why they are calling and lets you decide whether to answer.
  • Caller-ID quality: databases identify businesses and previously reported numbers, but a new or spoofed number may have no reliable label.
  • Unknown and private numbers: some controls silence calls with no caller ID, while others target numbers already classified as spam. These are different settings.
  • False positives: legitimate appointment reminders, delivery drivers, schools, or international callers can be mislabeled. A good app should make blocked-call history easy to inspect.
  • Permissions and data handling: caller-ID services may process phone numbers and call metadata. Read the permission screen and privacy policy before enabling a default caller-ID or spam app.
  • Device and regional support: Android version, handset maker, carrier, country, language, and the phone app installed can all change which controls appear.
  • Free and paid limits: some providers reserve advanced blocking, lookup, or family features for a subscription; prices change and must be checked in the current app store.
  • Overlapping filters: a carrier filter and a third-party app may both label or block the same call. Two filters can improve coverage, but they can also make troubleshooting and legitimate-call recovery harder.

Phone by Google: the best first step for most Android phones

Google documents caller ID and spam protection in the Phone app. The app can identify businesses, warn that a call may be spam, and automatically block calls that it classifies as suspected spam. Because this protection is already part of the phone experience on supported devices, it is the sensible baseline before adding another database or granting another app access to call information.

Turn on caller ID and spam protection

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Open the menu (usually the three-dot button) and choose Settings.
  3. Open Caller ID & spam or the similarly named spam-protection section. Labels differ by Phone app version.
  4. Enable caller and spam identification. If your version offers Filter spam calls or Automatically block suspected spam, enable it if you prefer automatic handling.
  5. Review the Spam or Blocked call history after a few days. If a legitimate number was filtered, mark it as not spam or add it to your contacts.

Google notes that using caller ID and spam protection may send information about calls to Google to identify a business or determine whether a call is spam. That disclosure is important: the convenience comes from processing call-related information, so check the current permission and privacy screens on your device.

Use Call Screen when you want a conversation, not a blind rejection

Call Screen is an interactive alternative to simply blocking. On phones and in regions where it is supported, the assistant answers an incoming call, asks the caller to identify themselves and explain the purpose, and shows you a transcript or summary so you can decide whether to pick up. Availability, languages, carrier support, and automatic-screening options vary.

  1. Open Phone > Settings.
  2. Choose Spam and Call Screen, Call Screen, or the closest label shown on your phone.
  3. Review the available screening modes, such as screening unknown callers manually or automatically screening suspected spam.
  4. During an incoming call, tap Screen call when that button appears. Read the caller’s response before choosing to answer, hang up, or report the call.

Call Screen is preferable when you might receive legitimate calls from numbers that are not in your contacts, such as a clinic, school, recruiter, or delivery service. It is less suitable when you need every call to ring immediately or when your phone, carrier, language, or country does not support the feature.

Understand Scam Detection’s Pixel restriction

Google’s Scam Detection help states: Scam Detection only works on Google Pixel devices. Treat that as a compatibility check, not as a promise for all Android phones. A non-Pixel phone may still have caller ID, spam labels, ordinary blocking, or Call Screen, but the specific Scam Detection feature is not universal. Look for the feature in your Phone app settings rather than assuming that an Android version alone qualifies you.

Silence unknown or private numbers

Android also provides a control for calls that hide their number. In the Phone app, open Settings > Blocked numbers (the wording can differ) and look for an option to block or silence Unknown callers. This normally targets private or unidentified numbers; it does not necessarily block every call from a visible number that is unfamiliar to you. If you are waiting for a legitimate call from a new number, use screening or spam labeling instead of silencing all unknown callers.

Truecaller: the clearest dedicated third-party choice

Truecaller’s Google Play listing describes a separate caller-ID and spam-blocking service. It identifies callers, blocks spam, scam, and fraud calls, supports automatic spam blocking, and includes Family Protection. Choose it when you want a continuously maintained caller database and more active controls than your phone’s built-in settings provide.

What it adds

  • Caller identification: a number can be matched against the service’s database before you answer.
  • Automatic blocking: the app can block categories of spam, scam, or fraud calls instead of merely displaying a warning.
  • Family Protection: the listing includes features intended to help protect family members from suspicious calls.
  • A separate control layer: you can review the app’s blocked and identified calls independently from the Phone app or carrier log.

Set it up without losing legitimate calls

  1. Install the current app from Google Play and read the permissions it requests.
  2. When Android asks which app should provide caller ID and spam protection, select the role only if you accept the app’s data practices and want it to make those decisions.
  3. Start with warning or identification mode if you are unsure about false positives. Move to automatic blocking after reviewing several days of results.
  4. Check the app’s blocked-call history and whitelist important numbers, local services, and recurring callers.
  5. Keep the Phone app’s own spam settings in mind. Running both systems can create duplicate labels or make it unclear which service blocked a call.

The listing does not establish one universal subscription price, and features can change by country. Check the current Google Play page for the edition offered to your account rather than relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.

Hiya: reverse lookup and manual investigation

CTIA’s Android resource describes Hiya Caller ID and Block as offering automatic spam detection, reverse lookup, a spam-check dialer, blacklisting, reporting, and caller ID. That combination suits readers who often want to investigate a number before blocking it, rather than relying only on an automatic verdict.

When Hiya is a good fit

  • You want to paste or enter a number into a reverse-lookup tool.
  • You prefer to report suspicious numbers and maintain a personal blacklist.
  • You want caller ID and spam detection in a Samsung or other Android ecosystem where the service is already integrated or available.
  • You need a spam-check dialer for checking a number before returning a call.

A Boulder County unwanted-call guide listed Hiya Premium at $3.99 per month as a historical reference. That is not a current universal price: subscriptions, taxes, trials, and regional offers can change. Verify the amount and included features in the current app store before paying.

Carrier call filters: a practical alternative to another app

The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking whether your wireless carrier offers call blocking. Associated Press coverage identifies services from Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T as examples of carrier-provided options; basic filtering is commonly free while more advanced controls may be paid. The exact product name, enrollment path, price, and supported lines depend on the carrier and country.

Why use the carrier’s filter

  • Filtering can occur before a call reaches the phone app.
  • There is no second independent caller-ID app to configure.
  • Billing and support are handled through an account you already have.
  • Family-line controls may be available at the account level.

What to verify

  1. Open your carrier’s official app or account dashboard and search for spam protection, call filter, or scam shield.
  2. Check whether the service labels, silences, or fully blocks calls.
  3. Confirm whether unknown-number controls apply to all lines or only one number.
  4. Read the free-versus-paid feature list and any trial end date.
  5. After activation, place a test call from a trusted number and confirm that it still rings.

Carrier filtering can coexist with Phone by Google or a third-party app, but stacking systems may produce duplicate warnings or make a false positive harder to diagnose. Start with one primary blocker, then add another only when you can identify which service is responsible for each action.

One account-level solution for several mobile lines Your carrier’s filter Carrier services can apply protection at the network or account layer.
Frequent legitimate calls from new numbers Call Screen or labeling rather than blanket unknown-number blocking You can inspect the caller’s purpose without rejecting every unfamiliar number.

How to reduce false positives and recover a blocked call

Every filter makes a classification decision, and classifications can be wrong. A blocked call may be a real appointment, a school, a bank’s fraud department, or a delivery driver using a new outbound number.

  1. Open the Phone app’s Recents and Spam or Blocked view.
  2. Open the call details and read the label or reason shown by the active filter.
  3. Mark the call as Not spam, unblock the number, or add it to contacts.
  4. If a service repeatedly misclassifies a legitimate organization, lower its automatic-blocking level and use screening or warning mode.
  5. Tell important callers to leave a voicemail or use a known callback number. Do not return a suspicious call through a link in a text message.

If you cannot find the call in any log, check the carrier’s call-filter dashboard as well as the third-party app. A network-level block may never appear as a normal missed call on the handset.

Privacy and permissions

Caller-ID and blocking services need information about incoming numbers to make a decision. Google says caller-ID and spam-protection use may send call information to Google to identify a business or determine whether a call is spam. Other providers have their own policies, retention periods, and sharing practices.

Before enabling a service, inspect:

  • Which Android permissions it requests and whether each is required for the feature you want.
  • Whether the app becomes the default caller-ID or spam-protection provider.
  • How it handles contacts, call history, phone numbers, recordings, and diagnostic data.
  • How to delete account data or withdraw from the service.
  • Whether a paid tier changes data use or only unlocks controls.

The FTC recommends checking app-store ratings when evaluating call-blocking apps. Ratings can reveal usability problems, but they do not prove that a service catches every scam or protects every piece of call data.

What blockers cannot do

Scammers can spoof a local number, rotate through new numbers, leave convincing voicemails, or impersonate a bank, government office, employer, or family member. A clean caller-ID result is not proof that the caller is genuine. Labels also do not necessarily prevent a call from reaching the phone; some services warn you while allowing the call to ring.

Use these safety rules for any call that demands urgency:

  • Never share a password, one-time verification code, full payment-card number, or remote-access code with an inbound caller.
  • Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a bank transfer because someone threatens immediate consequences.
  • Hang up and contact the organization through a phone number or website you looked up independently.
  • Report the number through your Phone app, carrier, or blocking service, and report fraud to the appropriate consumer-protection authority.

The scale of the problem is substantial: Google reported that consumers told the FTC about $2.95 billion in impersonation-scam losses in 2024. That figure describes reported losses, not the accuracy of any particular blocking app.

Troubleshooting common problems

Spam calls still ring after automatic blocking is enabled

  • Confirm that you enabled automatic blocking, not only caller-ID labels.
  • Check whether the call is being delivered by a carrier filter, a different Phone app, or a second dialer.
  • Update the Phone app and Android system, then restart the phone.
  • Understand that new or spoofed numbers may not yet be classified.

A legitimate call was blocked

  • Review the blocked or spam history and mark the number as not spam.
  • Add recurring callers to contacts.
  • Use screening or warning mode instead of automatic rejection.
  • Check both the carrier dashboard and any third-party app for separate blocklists.

Call Screen or Scam Detection is missing

  • Check the handset model, Android version, carrier, country, and language.
  • Remember that Google’s Scam Detection is restricted to Pixel devices.
  • Install updates for the Phone app and Google Play system components.
  • If the feature is not offered in your region or on your model, use caller ID, spam blocking, or a carrier filter instead.

Two services are fighting each other

Temporarily disable the third-party or carrier filter, place a test call from a trusted number, and re-enable services one at a time. Keep the service whose labels and false-positive handling you understand best. More filters are not automatically better if you cannot tell which one blocked an important call.

Bottom line

For most Android users, enable Phone by Google’s caller ID and spam protection first, then add Call Screen when the device and region support it. Pixel owners can also check for Scam Detection, remembering that Google limits that feature to Pixel phones. Choose Truecaller when you specifically want a dedicated caller-ID database and automatic spam, scam, and fraud blocking; choose Hiya for reverse lookup and reporting tools; or use your carrier’s filter for account-level protection. Whichever option you select, treat every warning as assistance rather than proof and verify unexpected callers through an independent channel.
