The best modem-router combo for gaming is the one your cable provider approves for your exact service tier, delivers stable low latency, and has enough fast Ethernet ports for your wired devices. Among the independently compared models available here, the ARRIS SURFboard G20 is the strongest mid-range performance choice, while the NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80 is the most capable high-speed option on paper and has a 2.5 Gbps port. The ARRIS G36 trades wireless performance for a faster wired port, and the Motorola MG8702 is a practical lower-tier choice with four Gigabit LAN ports. The current independent roundup documents four principal picks rather than five, so this guide does not invent a fifth ranking.
Which gaming modem-router combos are actually supported by the evidence?
A combo unit contains both a cable modem and a Wi-Fi router. The modem connects to your cable provider, while the router shares that connection over Wi-Fi and Ethernet. That single-box design reduces equipment, cables and configuration, but it also means the modem must be approved for your provider and plan before gaming performance matters.
| Model | Best fit | Independent gaming evidence | Wired connectivity | Compatibility notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80 | Fast cable plans and households needing a multi-gig wired link | Named a gaming pick by Popular Mechanics; the phrase “near-lag-free” is marketing language, not a latency guarantee | One 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port plus four additional Ethernet ports, according to Popular Mechanics | NETGEAR lists support for US cable providers including Xfinity, Spectrum and Cox; not compatible with fiber or cable-bundled voice service |
| ARRIS SURFboard G20 | Best balanced mid-range option | RTINGS reports better speed, latency and gaming scores than its upper-midrange pick, plus a range advantage | Two 1 Gbps LAN ports | Cox lists it in the 1 Gig or lower tier |
| ARRIS SURFboard G36 | Users who need one faster wired connection | RTINGS reports weaker wireless performance than the G20 | One 2.5 Gbps port | Cox lists it in the 2 Gig or lower tier; confirm current approval with your provider |
| Motorola MG8702 | Plans at or below the 1 Gig class with several wired devices | No independent gaming ranking supplied here; specifications should not be read as measured game throughput | Four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports | Cox lists it in the 1 Gig or lower tier |
| Fifth product | Not ranked | No fifth principal pick is substantiated by the current comparison | Not stated | Do not buy an unverified model on the assumption that it completes a top-five list |
RTINGS’ comparison page, updated October 1, 2026, is the primary independent performance source for this shortlist: The 4 Best Cable Modem-Router Combos of 2026. It presents four main picks in the material available for this article. A fifth model should be added only after its provider certification and gaming measurements are documented.
What should gamers compare besides the advertised Wi-Fi speed?
Wi-Fi speed labels describe a theoretical radio capacity, not the ping shown inside a game. A useful comparison combines measured latency and gaming results with range, throughput, and the number and speed of Ethernet ports.

Latency and gaming behavior
Latency is the delay between your device and the game server. A router can advertise a large aggregate Wi-Fi number and still deliver inconsistent play if wireless congestion, distance or queueing creates spikes. RTINGS reports that the G20 edged its upper-midrange pick in speed, latency and gaming scores, making it the most defensible performance choice among the models covered here.
Wired port capacity
Ethernet avoids the radio interference and distance effects that affect Wi-Fi. Count every device you may wire—console, gaming PC, work computer, streaming box or access point—and compare that total with the router’s port count. Port speed matters too: a 2.5 Gbps port is useful only when your device, cable, plan and local network can use more than 1 Gbps.
Range and household traffic
Range determines whether a console or PC can maintain a strong signal from its usual room. The G20 has a range advantage in RTINGS’ comparison. A larger home may still need a different network design; this evidence set does not establish mesh performance for these models, so do not assume a single combo will cover every floor.
The Tool Desk

The CAX80 is the high-capacity choice when you have a compatible cable plan and want a multi-gig wired connection in the combo itself. NETGEAR identifies it as a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem with an integrated Wi-Fi 6 router and advertises Wi-Fi speeds up to 6 Gbps.
What the specifications mean
NETGEAR states that the modem supports up to 10 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload capability. Those are manufacturer-stated technical limits, not a promise that your provider will deliver those rates or that a game will use them. NETGEAR’s product page says Wi-Fi 6 with speeds up to 6 Gbps can support 4K streaming and gaming on multiple devices; treat that as the company’s claim rather than an independent test.
Why it can suit a gaming setup
Popular Mechanics selected the CAX80 as a gaming pick and notes one 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port alongside four additional Ethernet ports. That layout lets you reserve the fastest port for a multi-gig PC or console while keeping other wired equipment connected. The “near-lag-free” wording in that roundup is promotional phrasing and should not be read as a guaranteed ping.

Who should avoid it
NETGEAR explicitly excludes fiber service and cable-bundled voice service. A customer using either service type needs a different device category or an ISP-supplied gateway. Even on cable, check the exact CAX80 model against your provider’s current approved-device list before ordering.

For many cable households, yes. RTINGS labels the G20 its mid-range pick and reports that it outperformed the upper-midrange pick in speed, latency and gaming scores while also offering better range. That combination makes it the clearest all-around recommendation in this evidence set.
Where the G20 is strong
The G20’s advantage is balance rather than a single headline specification. It combines the strongest reported gaming results among the listed models with a range advantage, which helps when the gaming device cannot be placed beside the router. Cox includes it in the 1 Gig or lower certified tier.
The two-port limitation
There are only two 1 Gbps LAN ports. A console and a PC can use them directly, but a larger wired household may need an Ethernet switch. The switch adds another device and does not increase the internet speed; it simply expands the number of local connections.
When does the ARRIS SURFboard G36 make more sense than the G20?
The G36 is the choice for a faster single wired link, not the automatic upgrade for wireless gaming. RTINGS reports that its wireless performance is weaker than the G20’s, while the G36 includes a 2.5 Gbps port.
Choose it for a multi-gig local link
If your computer, console or network-attached storage has a 2.5 Gbps interface and your plan can exceed 1 Gbps, the G36’s faster port may be valuable. Confirm that the client device and cable support the same rate; otherwise the connection negotiates at the lower speed.

Check coverage before buying
Because the G36’s wireless results trail the G20’s in RTINGS’ comparison, it is a weaker fit when the gaming room is distant or separated by several walls. Cox places it in the 2 Gig or lower tier, but ISP certification can change, so verify the current list for your address and plan.
Is the Motorola MG8702 suitable for a 1 Gig-or-lower plan?
The MG8702 is a sensible specification-led option for a cable plan in the 1 Gig class or below, especially when you need several wired connections. Cox lists it in that tier, and Motorola’s support page identifies DOCSIS 3.1 and four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports.
Why the four ports matter
Four Gigabit ports can connect a console, gaming PC, work computer and another wired device without an immediate switch. All four are limited to Gigabit Ethernet, so this model is not the right fit for a local 2.5 Gbps requirement.

Do not mistake specifications for gaming tests
Motorola’s published data rates describe technical capability. The available evidence does not provide an independent latency or gaming score for the MG8702, so select it for provider approval, plan level and port layout rather than assuming a particular in-game ping.
How do these models compare by gaming scenario?
The right pick changes with the limiting factor in your home. Use the following decisions instead of ranking every model by its Wi-Fi label.
You play beside the router and have a fast cable plan
Start with the CAX80 if your provider approves it and you need a 2.5 Gbps wired port. Its DOCSIS 3.1 platform and stated multi-gig capability leave more headroom, but the service plan remains the limit.

Your gaming room is far from the gateway
Favor the G20 because RTINGS reports a range advantage and stronger overall gaming results than the upper-midrange comparison model. Use Ethernet instead if you can run a cable safely; distance can overwhelm any advertised wireless rate.
You need one 2.5 Gbps wired connection but wireless is secondary
Consider the G36 after checking provider approval. Its 2.5 Gbps port is the differentiator, while its weaker wireless performance makes it less attractive for several distant Wi-Fi clients.
You have several Gigabit wired devices on a lower-tier plan
The MG8702’s four Gigabit ports fit that wiring pattern. Its certification and your plan should be confirmed before purchase, and no independent gaming result should be assumed.
How do I verify cable-provider compatibility before buying?
Certification is tier-specific. A modem that appears on an ISP page may be approved only for certain speed levels, regions or service combinations.
- Identify your service type. Confirm that you have cable internet, not fiber. The CAX80 is specifically not compatible with fiber, and its page also excludes cable-bundled voice service.
- Write down the exact plan name and advertised download tier. Do not rely on a broad “supports Gigabit” claim.
- Open your provider’s approved-device list and search the complete model number. Cox separates devices by tiers such as 1 Gig or lower and 2 Gig or lower; its page also notes that upload rates can vary with network capacity and location: Cox Certified Cable Modems.
- Check whether voice service is included. Some combinations require an eMTA or an ISP gateway even when the internet modem itself is approved.
- Save the approval result and return policy. ISP lists and supported tiers can change, and a return is easier when you have documented the exact model.
How should I set up a combo for lower gaming latency?
Setup cannot eliminate distance to a game server, but it can avoid preventable wireless and queueing problems.
- Place the combo in an open, central location near the cable outlet. Avoid enclosing it in a cabinet or placing it beside heat-producing electronics.
- Connect the coaxial cable firmly, then connect the modem-router’s power adapter. Wait for the provider, downstream, upstream and online indicators to settle according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Activate the modem through your ISP’s activation page or support line. Use the exact model and account details; activation is separate from Wi-Fi configuration.
- Update the router firmware through its administration interface before tuning wireless settings. Firmware updates can address stability and security issues.
- Give the gaming console or PC a unique Wi-Fi network name and password, or connect it to Ethernet. Use the fastest compatible LAN port for a multi-gig client.
- Run a speed and latency test from the gaming device at several times of day. Record idle latency and latency while another device uploads or streams; a single speed-test result does not describe a complete gaming session.
- If latency rises sharply during uploads or downloads, pause large transfers or use the router’s traffic-management controls if its current firmware provides them. Do not assume a “gaming” label means the feature exists.
What common buying mistakes cause gaming problems?
- Buying for Wi-Fi number alone: Aggregate wireless throughput is not the same as the ping or consistency seen by one console.
- Ignoring service type: Cable combos do not replace fiber terminals, and the CAX80 specifically excludes fiber and bundled voice service.
- Overlooking port count: Two 1 Gbps ports on the G20 may be insufficient for a wired household without a switch.
- Paying for unused multi-gig hardware: A 2.5 Gbps port has no internet benefit when the plan and client device are capped at 1 Gbps.
- Assuming certification is universal: Provider lists are organized by tier, and upload capacity can vary by network and location.
- Treating marketing claims as measurements: NETGEAR’s 6 Gbps Wi-Fi and “stream and game in ultra HD 4K” statement are manufacturer claims; Popular Mechanics’ “near-lag-free” wording is not a guarantee.
- Expecting a single gateway to solve coverage: Range depends on construction, placement and interference. The evidence here does not establish mesh results for these products.
What should I do if gaming latency is still high?
Only Wi-Fi play is unstable
Test the same device over Ethernet. If wired latency is stable, move the gateway, reduce obstructions, select a less congested wireless channel when the firmware allows it, or run Ethernet to the gaming room. This separates a local radio problem from an ISP or game-server problem.

Both wired and wireless play spike
Check whether another device is uploading or downloading. If spikes occur only under load, reduce competing traffic and inspect available traffic-management settings. If the connection remains unstable when the network is idle, contact the ISP and provide time-stamped tests.
The modem will not activate
Recheck the model number, coax connection and ISP account entry. A device can be technically compatible yet absent from the provider’s current tier list or blocked by a bundled voice requirement.
Download speed is lower than advertised
Compare a wired test with your plan’s expected range and test at different times. Provider capacity, location, Wi-Fi conditions and the client’s Ethernet or wireless interface can all limit the result; modem specifications are not service guarantees.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I buy a combo or separate modem and router?
A combo is simplest when one approved box covers your plan, placement and port needs. Separate devices provide more flexibility for changing routers, adding a mesh system or upgrading only one component, but they require extra hardware, cabling and configuration. The material available for these four models does not provide a measured head-to-head comparison with separate-device systems, so choose based on your need for simplicity versus upgrade flexibility rather than a claimed gaming benchmark.
What is the final buying checklist?
- Confirm the connection is cable and identify whether voice service is bundled.
- Match the exact model to your ISP’s approved list and speed tier.
- Choose based on measured latency, gaming performance and range where independent testing exists.
- Count wired devices and verify both port quantity and port speed.
- Use Ethernet for a console or PC when placement permits.
- Distinguish manufacturer throughput claims from your actual plan speed and in-game latency.
- Check current price and availability at purchase; those details change and are not consistent across the available sources.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one of these combos with fiber internet?
No. These are cable modem-router combinations. In particular, NETGEAR states that the CAX80 is not compatible with fiber, so fiber customers should follow the provider’s required optical terminal and router setup instead.
Do I need a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port for online gaming?
Not usually. A 2.5 Gbps port helps when your internet plan and gaming device both exceed 1 Gbps or when you move large files on your local network; it does not automatically reduce game latency.
Will a modem-router combo improve my ping to every game server?
No. Ping also depends on the server’s distance, the ISP route and congestion outside your home. A combo can prevent local Wi-Fi or queueing problems, but it cannot change the physical route to a remote server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is an Ethernet switch compatible with the G20’s two LAN ports?
Yes. A standard Gigabit switch can expand the number of wired devices connected through one G20 port. The switch adds ports, not internet bandwidth, so all connected devices still share the available link and plan capacity.
