Choose the tool by the question you need to answer rather than by the word “app.” EIA publishes several interfaces over the same official energy-data program.

Why EIA is the most reliable starting point

EIA is the U.S. government’s independent energy-information agency and maintains an Open Data portal with petroleum datasets covering prices, stocks, sales, production, imports, exports, and related series. Its stated aim is to make energy data “more accessible, understandable, relevant, and responsive to your needs.” That combination of published definitions, downloadable records, and machine-readable data is more useful for serious tracking than an unlabeled chart that merely displays a number.

The EIA tools directory is useful when you do not yet know which dataset contains the measure you need. It links to dashboards, projections, bulk-download resources, and a Crude Import Tracking Tool. The petroleum summary dashboard is the practical no-code entry point: select a topic, inspect the series definition, set the geography and date range, and export the displayed data when available.

Tracking crude-oil prices

Use a defined series, not a generic “oil price” card

“Oil price” can refer to a spot price, a futures settlement, a regional crude grade, or an EIA-published average. Before recording a number, note the product, location, contract or market convention, unit, frequency, and date. The EIA petroleum tools expose daily, weekly, monthly, and annual petroleum series, so two values with the same product name can still represent different calculations.

EIA documents that some weekly and monthly prices are calculated from daily closing spot prices. It also documents official NYMEX closing prices at 2:30 p.m. for specified delivery months. A market screen showing an intraday quote therefore will not necessarily match an EIA weekly or monthly value. Keep the source and calculation method with every value you save.

Finding WTI or Brent-related data

If your workflow needs WTI or Brent, search the EIA crude-price series by its full label and read the accompanying definition before adding it to a chart. The available evidence establishes EIA crude-oil price coverage, but it does not establish a single third-party application that merges every WTI and Brent quote with weekly EIA inventory releases. Use the EIA series for a documented historical record and, when necessary, place a separately sourced market quote beside it without treating the two as identical measures.

Step-by-step dashboard workflow

1. Open the EIA petroleum summary dashboard from the EIA tools collection.
2. Choose the crude-oil price topic and read the series description, unit, geography, and frequency.
3. Select the date range and frequency that match your comparison. Do not mix a daily close with a weekly average without labeling the transformation.
4. Inspect the chart for missing dates, revisions, or a change in series definition.
5. Download or copy the data, retaining the series name, publication date, unit, and source note in your spreadsheet.

Gasoline geography matters. EIA distinguishes conventional gasoline areas from reformulated-gasoline (RFG) areas. Compare like with like: a conventional-gasoline series should not be silently combined with an RFG series, and a national average should not be presented as a local station price.

Gasoline methodology date

EIA implemented a gasoline methodology change on May 14, 2018. If you analyze a long historical chart that crosses that date, preserve the methodology note and avoid describing every change as a market move. A visible break can reflect the measurement method as well as fuel prices.

Diesel methodology date

EIA implemented a change to weekly on-highway diesel estimates on June 13, 2023. Keep that date attached to any analysis spanning the change. A pre-change and post-change comparison may remain useful, but the method should be acknowledged in the chart or caption.

Step-by-step weekly price workflow

1. Open EIA’s weekly retail gasoline and diesel price tool.
2. Select gasoline or on-highway diesel, then choose one geography and series definition.
3. For gasoline, confirm whether the selection is conventional or reformulated gasoline.
4. Set a weekly date range and export the values with the publication date and unit.
5. For a trend chart, keep the same series throughout; if you change series, start a new line and label the change.
6. When interpreting a historical break, check the May 14, 2018 gasoline note or June 13, 2023 diesel note before attributing it to supply or demand.

Finding EIA crude-oil and petroleum inventories

Stocks datasets

For inventory-focused work, use EIA petroleum stocks datasets. The public catalog describes the stocks API as covering petroleum and crude-oil stocks. These records are the appropriate place to obtain a defined stock measure instead of estimating inventory from a price chart.

Petroleum summary datasets

The petroleum summary API includes production, imports, inputs, stocks, exports, and prices. It is useful when you need several related measures in one analysis, such as comparing stock changes with refinery inputs or imports. Read each field’s definition: “stocks,” “inputs,” and “production” are different quantities and should not be substituted for one another.

Step-by-step inventory workflow

1. Start with the petroleum summary dashboard if you need to identify the right series without code.
2. Choose a stocks series and record its product scope, geography, unit, and frequency.
3. Use the stocks dataset when you need structured historical records or a repeatable download.
4. If you also need production, imports, inputs, exports, or prices, check the corresponding petroleum summary fields and retain their individual definitions.
5. Plot the inventory series at its published frequency. Do not imply a daily reading when the selected series is weekly or monthly.

Using EIA Open Data APIv2 for repeatable tracking

APIv2 is the best EIA interface for technical monitoring, spreadsheets that refresh on schedule, scripts, and external alert systems. EIA describes it as RESTful and hierarchically organized. Queries can request selected columns, date ranges, facets, and dataset metadata. Registration for an API key is required.

What the API structure gives you

• Dataset hierarchy: navigate from a broad petroleum dataset toward a specific series instead of downloading unrelated records.
• Facets: filter by dimensions such as product, geography, or another published category.
• Date ranges: retrieve only the period required for a chart or alert.
• Selected columns: reduce the response to fields your spreadsheet or script uses.
• Metadata: inspect definitions and dimensions before storing values.

API setup procedure

1. Register for an EIA API key through the Open Data portal.
2. Identify the petroleum dataset and series in the dashboard or API metadata before writing a query.
3. Record the series identifier, product, geography, unit, frequency, and any facet values.
4. Build a query that requests only the required columns and date range.
5. Test a short date range first, then compare a returned value with the dashboard.
6. Save the query definition alongside the downloaded data so another person can reproduce it.
7. Schedule the query at a sensible interval for the series frequency; polling a weekly series every few minutes adds no new information.

APIv2 version 2.1.12 patch notes were published in March 2026. If you maintain a production integration, review current API documentation and patch notes before changing parsers or relying on a particular response field.

Building alerts without misreading the data

EIA supplies the data feed; your spreadsheet, script, or monitoring service supplies the notification logic. A useful alert stores the last retrieved value, the series definition, and the publication timestamp, then compares the new observation with a clearly defined threshold.

Simple spreadsheet alert

1. Import the API response or dashboard download into a dated table.
2. Keep the series identifier and unit in fixed columns, not only in a chart title.
3. Calculate the change from the previous published observation.
4. Set a conditional format or notification for an absolute threshold or percentage change that fits the series frequency.
5. Review the source note whenever the alert crosses the gasoline or diesel methodology dates.

Scripted alert

1. Authenticate with the registered API key.
2. Request a narrow date range and the exact facets for the series.
3. Validate that the response contains the expected unit, frequency, and observation date.
4. Compare the newest observation with the prior stored observation.
5. Send an alert only after validation succeeds; log an error instead of alerting on an empty or malformed response.

How often EIA data updates

EIA exposes daily, weekly, monthly, and annual petroleum series. The update rhythm belongs to the individual series, not to the EIA brand as a whole. Check the dataset metadata and publication schedule before promising a refresh time.

Heating-oil and propane prices are collected weekly during the October–March heating season. Outside that seasonal collection window, an apparent absence of new observations is not evidence that the data feed has failed. It may reflect the stated collection period.

Calling a weekly average a live price

Problem: a weekly or monthly EIA value is compared with an intraday market quote as if both were simultaneous.

Fix: label the observation frequency and remember that some EIA averages are calculated from daily closing spot prices.

Problem: conventional and RFG series are placed in one line without explanation.
