Roku Ultra is the best all-around alternative to Apple TV 4K when you want Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, Ethernet, Wi‑Fi 6 and USB playback in one box. Choose Google TV Streamer (4K) for Google Home and casting, NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for Plex and local media, or the third-generation Fire TV Cube for Alexa voice control, Dolby Vision and Wi‑Fi 6E.
All four can deliver 4K HDR, but they are not interchangeable. HDR format coverage, audio passthrough, wired networking, USB support, app availability and smart-home integration differ. Your television, sound system, HDMI cable, streaming services and country also determine which device is the right replacement.
Quick comparison
The table below focuses on documented capabilities rather than subjective picture-quality claims. HDR and Dolby Atmos only work when the video, streaming app, television and audio equipment all support them.

What matters when replacing Apple TV 4K
HDR format support
Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata to adjust tone mapping scene by scene, while HDR10 uses static metadata. HDR10+ also carries dynamic metadata, and HLG is commonly used for broadcast-style HDR. A player can advertise support for a format, but the streaming service must provide that format and your television must be able to display it.
For the broadest documented coverage, Roku Ultra, Google TV Streamer (4K) and Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) list Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro documentation lists Dolby Vision and HDR10; do not assume HDR10+ support without a model-specific confirmation.
Frame rate, HDMI and HDCP
Most 4K streaming is delivered at 24, 30 or 60 frames per second. Roku Ultra is documented for up to 2160p at 60 fps and Dolby Vision at 60 fps. SHIELD TV Pro supports 4K HDR at 60 fps and AI upscaling to 4K/60. Your television must support the selected resolution and frame rate, and the HDMI connection must meet the required copy-protection level, commonly HDCP 2.2 or newer for 4K services.

Google specifically recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable for optimal performance with Google TV Streamer (4K). Connect the player directly to an HDMI input that supports 4K HDR; older switchers, soundbars or AV receivers can cause a black screen or force SDR if they cannot pass the signal.
Audio and Dolby Atmos
Atmos is an object-based audio format, not a guarantee that every title will play in Atmos. The service, title, subscription tier, player app, HDMI path and receiver or soundbar all have to support it. Roku Ultra documents Dolby Atmos decoding. The other devices can work with Atmos-capable equipment and content, but you should check the exact app and receiver combination before buying if immersive audio is essential.

Ethernet versus Wi‑Fi
Wired Ethernet avoids wireless interference and is useful for high-bitrate remuxes, busy apartments and network media servers. Roku Ultra includes 10/100 Ethernet and Wi‑Fi 6. Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) lists Wi‑Fi 6E and Ethernet. A wired connection is not automatically faster than a strong modern Wi‑Fi link, but it is usually more predictable for a fixed television.
Local files, USB and Plex
USB playback matters if you keep movies on a flash drive or hard disk. Roku Ultra includes USB 3.0 local playback. SHIELD TV Pro is the strongest choice for a personal library because it supports Plex Media Server, USB storage and local or network playback. The other players are primarily streaming boxes; verify file-system support, codec support and app availability before treating them as replacements for a dedicated media server.
Roku Ultra: best general-purpose alternative
Why it stands out
Roku Ultra (model 4850) combines the widest documented HDR list in this comparison with a straightforward television interface. It supports Dolby Vision at 60 fps, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, outputs up to 2160p at 60 fps, and includes Dolby Atmos decoding. Wi‑Fi 6, 10/100 Ethernet and USB 3.0 cover the most common home-theater connection needs.
The box is a particularly good fit for a mixed household where one person uses major subscription services, another plays files from USB and the television is far from a reliable wireless access point. Roku’s interface is organized around apps and content discovery rather than a particular phone or smart-home platform.
Limitations to weigh
- The 10/100 Ethernet port is adequate for streaming but has less link capacity than gigabit Ethernet. It is not a promise of a particular internet speed.
- Roku’s 30% faster statement is vendor marketing, not an independently verified benchmark.
- Roku does not document every app’s availability in every country. Check your local channel store before replacing a service you rely on.
- Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Atmos still require compatible titles, subscriptions, display settings and audio hardware.
Who should buy it
Choose Roku Ultra if you want one uncomplicated box with broad HDR coverage, wired networking and USB playback, and you do not need a deep Plex-server feature set or tight Google Home or Alexa integration. Roku lists a direct price of $149.99 at the time of access; treat that as a dated listing rather than a permanent price, and verify stock before ordering.

Google TV Streamer (4K): best for Google Home and casting
Why it stands out
Google TV Streamer (4K) supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, matching the broad HDR coverage of Roku Ultra and Fire TV Cube on paper. Its main advantage is ecosystem integration: Google Home households can use casting, a shared content interface and smart-home controls alongside compatible Matter and Thread devices.
If your household already casts from Android phones, Chrome browsers or Google-supported apps, the Streamer can reduce the friction of switching inputs and remotes. It is also a sensible choice when the television is part of a wider Google Home setup rather than an isolated screen.
Installation details
- Connect the Streamer to an HDMI input capable of 4K HDR.
- Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable, which Google recommends for optimal performance.
- Complete setup in the Google Home app, then sign in to the streaming services you use.
- Open the display settings and confirm that the television reports the intended 4K and HDR mode.
- Test casting from a phone and verify that your preferred services appear in your region’s Google TV catalog.
Limitations to weigh
- Google’s product information does not establish a universal list of local-file codecs, USB workflows or Plex-server features. Do not buy it solely as a local-media appliance without checking those requirements.
- App catalogs, live-TV integrations and smart-home features vary by country.
- An HDMI cable, receiver or switch that cannot pass 4K HDR can make a capable player appear to have weaker video output.
Who should buy it
Choose Google TV Streamer (4K) when casting and Google Home matter more than USB playback or a built-in media server. It is the ecosystem alternative, not automatically the best choice for every HDR television.
NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro: best for Plex and local media
Why it stands out
SHIELD TV Pro supports 4K HDR playback at 60 fps, Dolby Vision and HDR10. Its defining feature is AI-enhanced upscaling to 4K/60, which is intended to improve the appearance of lower-resolution video on a 4K display. It also supports Plex Media Server, USB storage and local or network playback, giving it capabilities that streaming-first boxes do not emphasize.
For a household with a large personal library, network-attached storage or a Plex server, SHIELD TV Pro can act as both a player and a server endpoint. Ethernet is preferable when you stream high-bitrate files from a network share; Wi‑Fi performance depends on distance, congestion and the access point.

How to use it for Plex
- Connect SHIELD TV Pro to the television or AV receiver with a high-bandwidth HDMI cable.
- Attach Ethernet if your media library is on a network server or if wireless throughput is inconsistent.
- Install or enable Plex Media Server and point it to the authorized local storage locations.
- Install the Plex client on the same SHIELD or on other devices on your network.
- Set the Plex client to direct play where the television and audio system support the file’s codecs; otherwise allow transcoding.
- Check the television’s information panel while playing a known Dolby Vision or HDR10 title to confirm the signal path.
Limitations to weigh
- Documented HDR support covers Dolby Vision and HDR10. There is no basis here to claim HDR10+ support for SHIELD TV Pro.
- AI upscaling is a processing feature, not a way to create native 4K detail from a low-resolution source.
- Streaming-app interfaces and update behavior can change, and this comparison does not establish a common independent benchmark for speed or long-term software support.
Who should buy it
Choose SHIELD TV Pro if Plex, network shares, USB storage and upscaling are central to your setup. It is usually excessive for someone who only watches mainstream streaming services, but it is the most capable specialist option in this group for personal media.
Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen): best for Alexa households
Why it stands out
The third-generation Fire TV Cube lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, plus Wi‑Fi 6E and Ethernet. Its hands-free Alexa controls can turn on equipment, launch apps, search for titles and operate compatible smart-home devices without reaching for the remote.
Wi‑Fi 6E can use the 6 GHz band when your router and region support it, while Ethernet provides a stable wired option. This combination is useful when the television is near a network jack but other household devices compete for wireless capacity.
Setup and compatibility checks
- Connect Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) to an HDMI input that supports 4K HDR.
- Use Ethernet if the television is close to your router; otherwise connect to a compatible Wi‑Fi 6E, Wi‑Fi 6 or earlier network.
- During setup, allow the Cube to detect the television, soundbar and receiver so Alexa can control power and input switching.
- Sign in to each streaming service and verify that the app is offered in your country.
- Play a Dolby Vision and an HDR10+ title, if available, and confirm the television switches modes correctly.
Limitations to weigh
- Alexa features depend on supported devices, account settings, language and region.
- Amazon’s listing establishes the HDR and network features above but does not establish universal Plex, USB or codec behavior for every use case.
- Confirm current stock and software support because availability can vary by market and generation.
Who should buy it
Choose Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) if hands-free Alexa control and smart-home operation are more important than a minimalist interface. Make sure you are buying the third-generation model; earlier Fire TV Cube generations do not necessarily share the same wireless and HDR specifications.
Which alternative is right for your setup?
Choose Roku Ultra when format coverage is the priority
Roku Ultra is the safest general recommendation for a household that wants Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Atmos, Ethernet and USB playback without committing to a phone or smart-home ecosystem. Its documented 60-fps Dolby Vision output also suits televisions that accept high-frame-rate Dolby Vision.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose Google TV Streamer when your home runs on Google
Google TV Streamer (4K) makes the most sense when casting, Google Home routines and Matter or Thread devices already organize your home. It is less compelling if your primary requirement is a Plex server or extensive USB playback.
Choose SHIELD TV Pro for a serious media library
SHIELD TV Pro is the specialist pick for Plex, network shares, USB drives and AI upscaling. Accept its narrower documented HDR list—Dolby Vision and HDR10—if those media features matter more than HDR10+.
Choose Fire TV Cube for hands-free Alexa control
Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) is the natural fit for Alexa users who want voice control of the player and compatible home-theater equipment, together with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Wi‑Fi 6E and Ethernet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore you buy: a compatibility checklist
- Television: Confirm 4K resolution, the HDR formats it accepts and which HDMI input supports them.
- HDMI cable: Use a certified high-bandwidth cable; Google recommends Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 for its 4K Streamer.
- Receiver or soundbar: Check that it passes 4K HDR and the audio formats you use. If not, connect the player to the television and send audio back through ARC or eARC where supported.
- Internet: Check your broadband plan and router placement. Ethernet is preferable for fixed installations and high-bitrate local files.
- Services: Verify app availability, subscription requirements and live-TV support in your country.
- Library needs: If you have USB drives, network shares or a Plex server, compare those requirements separately from ordinary streaming support.
- Remote and voice control: Decide whether you prefer Roku’s simple app-focused approach, Google casting, NVIDIA’s media controls or Alexa hands-free commands.
Troubleshooting 4K HDR problems
The television shows SDR instead of HDR
- Play a title that is explicitly labeled Dolby Vision, HDR10 or HDR10+ by the service.
- Open the television’s picture or signal-information panel to see what format arrived.
- Move the player to the television’s 4K HDR-capable HDMI input.
- Replace an old HDMI cable with a certified high-bandwidth cable.
- Temporarily bypass a receiver, switch or soundbar to identify whether it is blocking HDR passthrough.
- Restart the player after changing the display’s HDMI mode; some televisions apply the setting only after renegotiation.
Dolby Vision works but the screen is black or unstable
Black screens usually indicate a handshake, bandwidth or HDCP problem rather than a missing streaming feature. Test a direct HDMI connection, reduce intermediate devices, update the television and player software, and confirm that every component in the chain supports the selected resolution and HDR mode.
Playback buffers or Plex pauses
Run a speed test at the player’s location, then compare wired Ethernet with Wi‑Fi. For local files, inspect whether the server is transcoding, whether the file’s bitrate exceeds the network’s sustained throughput and whether subtitles or unsupported audio are forcing a transcode. SHIELD TV Pro’s Ethernet and Plex features are useful here, but they cannot overcome an overloaded server or an underpowered network.
Atmos is missing
Check the title, subscription tier and app first. Then verify that the player is connected through an Atmos-capable HDMI path and that the receiver or soundbar is set to accept bitstream audio. Some televisions expose Atmos only through eARC, while older ARC connections may convert it to a lower-bandwidth format.
What the published specifications do not prove
Manufacturer specifications establish supported formats, ports and headline features, but they do not establish a universal ranking for interface responsiveness, long-term update policy, bitrate consistency or every streaming app. Roku’s speed statement is a vendor claim, and no common independent benchmark is available here for comparing all four devices. Picture quality also depends on the source, display calibration, room lighting and the television’s tone-mapping behavior.
For that reason, choose by documented compatibility and your own media habits: Roku Ultra for broad all-round coverage, Google TV Streamer for Google integration, SHIELD TV Pro for Plex and local media, or Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) for Alexa and Wi‑Fi 6E.
