If you need a translated PDF file rather than a side-by-side translation of selected text, consider DeepL, Google Translate, or Adobe Acrobat’s PDF-to-Express workflow. They handle documents differently: DeepL translates whole files, Google Translate accepts document uploads with stated limits, and Adobe lets you translate an entire PDF, a page, or selected text. None is established here as the most accurate option; choose by file type, scan quality, output needs, and workflow.
How these tools differ from Edge
Microsoft Edge’s built-in PDF reader lets you select text and view its translation in a side pane. Microsoft lists more than 70 language choices, but feature availability and functionality may vary by device, market, and browser version. That makes Edge useful for understanding passages while reading; it is a different workflow from producing a translated copy of the document. Microsoft Edge PDF reader and translation
Best alternatives for translating PDF files
DeepL: whole-file PDF translation
DeepL translates PDF files through its web platform and desktop apps. An account is required, and monthly file translation availability depends on the plan. DeepL says its whole-file translation retains formatting, images, and fonts, but that does not guarantee identical layout or reliable results for every document.
DeepL cautions that scan quality, custom fonts, and large images can affect translation quality. PDFs exported from CAD files are unsupported. If the PDF result is unsatisfactory, DeepL suggests trying the original source document instead. DeepL PDF translation and DeepL file translation details

Google Translate: document upload from a computer
Google Translate’s computer document workflow accepts PDF uploads. Its help page specifies a 10 MB maximum for PDF, DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX files. Google also warns that text inside images and scanned PDF pages may appear in the output without being translated. If the document consists of scanned pages, this workflow may therefore leave key content untranslated. Google Translate document translation help
Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Express: translate all or part of a PDF
Adobe’s workflow starts in Acrobat: choose Translate this PDF, select a target language in Adobe Express, and translate all pages, one page, or selected text. Adobe documents automatic source-language recognition and formal or informal tone options, followed by downloading a PDF.

Adobe says translation may be skipped for scanned, secured, large, or complex PDFs, as well as files with unsupported fonts or languages. A PDF that fails to translate may need OCR, a simpler or unlocked source file, or another workflow. Adobe’s PDF translation instructions
Choose based on your PDF and desired output
| Need | Option to consider | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Translate a whole PDF and receive a translated file | DeepL or Adobe Acrobat/Express | DeepL requires an account and plan availability applies; Adobe may skip some scanned, secured, large, or complex files. |
| Translate a document through a computer upload | Google Translate | Google lists a 10 MB PDF limit on its cited help page, and says scanned or image text is not translated. |
| Understand a passage without translating the entire file | Microsoft Edge | Its documented PDF workflow translates selected text in a side pane rather than returning a translated PDF. |
| Work with a scanned PDF | Check OCR needs before choosing a translator | Image-only text may not be translated by Google; Adobe may skip scanned PDFs, while DeepL warns scan quality can affect results. |
What to do when a scanned PDF will not translate
A scan stores page content as images rather than ordinary selectable text. Optical character recognition (OCR) can convert recognized characters into text that can be selected or edited, which may make a document more usable in a translation workflow. OCR can misread poor scans, unusual fonts, tables, and handwriting, so check the recognized text before relying on a translation. Review the translated document before using it
Check names, numbers, dates, headings, tables, footnotes, and text embedded in images. Compare the translated output with the original to catch omissions or layout changes. For legal, medical, immigration, or contractual documents, have a qualified human review the translation before making decisions or submitting it.
