Use Zapier or Make to connect Workspace data—such as Google Sheets rows—to other services. Choose Apps Script for custom, low-code automations or AppSheet for no-code apps and workflows. A Marketplace add-on is a different option: it extends a Workspace host app and can present its interface inside that app.
First, distinguish an add-on from an automation platform
Google describes Workspace add-ons as applications that extend Workspace functionality, automate tasks, connect third-party services, and provide an interface within Workspace. Google also distinguishes Workspace add-ons from Editor add-ons. That integrated experience is useful when you want a focused feature in an app such as Gmail, Docs, or Sheets; it is not the same thing as a general service for designing workflows across multiple apps. Google for Developers: Add-ons overview
For a broader integration, a service such as Zapier or Make can connect supported events and actions between Google Sheets and other applications. The workflow may be configured in that service rather than presented as an interface inside a Workspace app. Google documents multiple ways to integrate third-party apps, so Marketplace installation is only one route. Compare the approaches by the job you need done
| Approach | Best starting point | What the cited documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace Marketplace add-on | A focused feature or integration surfaced within a Workspace host app | Google says add-ons can extend Workspace apps, automate tasks, and connect services. Availability and suitability depend on the specific add-on and organization policy. Google for Developers |
| Zapier | Connecting documented Google Sheets triggers or actions to other apps | Zapier lists Sheets integrations and describes new or updated row triggers. Verify the exact event and action needed in the current connector. Zapier integrations |
| Make | Building visual, module-based workflows that include documented Sheets operations | Make describes scenarios made of modules, including watching new rows and spreadsheet actions. Confirm the required module is available for your workflow. Make integration |
| Apps Script | A custom automation or app built with a low-code approach in Google’s ecosystem | Google characterizes Apps Script as a low-code route for building apps and automations. Google Workspace productivity apps and data integration |
| AppSheet | Creating an app or workflow through a no-code approach | Google characterizes AppSheet as a no-code route for creating apps and workflows. Google Workspace productivity apps and data integration |
This is a choice of approach, not a universal ranking. The reviewed product documentation does not establish feature parity, comparative performance, total cost, or a best-in-class winner.

Use Zapier or Make for cross-app workflows
Zapier: triggers and actions across services
Zapier is a candidate when a workflow starts or ends with a supported Google Sheets event and needs to involve another application. Its integration page lists Sheets triggers and actions, while its setup guide covers new or updated row triggers. For example, you could investigate whether a new or changed row can trigger the particular action you need in a connected service. The documentation establishes these Sheets integration patterns, not support for every Workspace app, event, or task. Google Sheets integrations · How to get started with Google Sheets on Zapier
Make: visual scenarios built from modules
Make describes workflows as scenarios composed of modules. Its Google Sheets integration documents watching new rows and actions for spreadsheet updates, including adding or updating data. That makes it worth considering when you want to assemble a visual workflow around supported Sheets operations. Do not assume a particular trigger, action, or edge case is available until you verify the relevant module. Make Google Sheets integration

For either service, write down the exact trigger, data to transfer, destination action, and any intermediate steps before choosing. A product’s general connection to Sheets does not prove that it supports the particular event or operation your office process requires.
Choose Google’s native tools for custom apps and automation
Apps Script for low-code customization
Google presents Apps Script as a low-code way to build apps and automations. Consider it when you want a custom solution in Google’s ecosystem and are willing to use a more configurable approach than selecting a ready-made add-on. The cited overview does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison with Zapier or Make, nor does it establish suitability for every workflow. Google Workspace productivity apps and data integration

AppSheet for no-code apps and workflows
Google describes AppSheet as a no-code way to create apps and workflows. It is a distinct option when the desired outcome is an app or workflow configured without writing code, rather than simply adding a feature inside a host app. The same source does not establish comparative limits or pricing against the other options. Check organization access before building
In a managed Workspace account, an administrator may control app installation or third-party access. Zapier’s Google Sheets setup guidance says Workspace users may need an administrator to enable third-party app access; this is a possible prerequisite, not a universal block. Google also explains that administrators can install Marketplace apps for an organization. Zapier setup guidance · Google Workspace Help: Find and install an app in the Marketplace

- Identify whether you are using a personal or organization-managed Workspace account.
- Confirm that the specific service and requested access are permitted by your organization’s policies.
- If access is restricted or installation is managed centrally, ask your administrator about the required approval before designing around that connection.
A practical way to select an option
- Start with the place the work happens. If you need a feature displayed inside Gmail, Docs, or Sheets, look for a suitable Marketplace add-on. If work must pass between services, assess a cross-app platform. If you need a custom app or workflow, consider Apps Script or AppSheet.
- Name the exact Workspace event and action. For Sheets, specify whether a new or updated row starts the automation and what must happen next. Check the current connector or module documentation for that precise combination.
- Match the build style to the project. Google labels Apps Script low-code and AppSheet no-code; Make documents visual, module-based scenarios. Choose based on the kind of configuration your workflow requires and your team’s ability to maintain it.
- Check access and operating constraints. Confirm administrator approval where relevant, then independently verify current plan limits, permissions, and provider terms. The cited material does not settle current prices or plan entitlements.
- Test the real workflow before relying on it. Validate the trigger, transferred data, destination action, and behavior when the source data changes. The documentation cited here describes capabilities, not results from comparative hands-on testing.
What the available documentation does not settle
The cited official pages support the specific integration and building approaches described above. They do not establish that Zapier or Make covers every Workspace task, that a Marketplace add-on can be replaced by either service, or that Apps Script and AppSheet match third-party platforms feature for feature. They also do not establish current comparative pricing, total cost, performance, or compliance suitability. Those questions require checking the exact product, plan, workflow, and organization requirements.
