The strongest mainstream alternatives to Google Home are Amazon Alexa and Apple Home. Samsung SmartThings is another option for compatible mixed-brand devices, while Home Assistant is worth considering if you want a more configurable setup and are prepared to verify its current hardware and maintenance requirements. Matter can make it easier to use devices across ecosystems, but it does not guarantee that every controller supports every device feature.
How to choose a Google Home alternative
Start with the devices you already own and the functions you need, rather than choosing by brand alone. A device may connect to a platform but still lack a particular feature there.
- Existing-device compatibility: Check the exact model, device category, controller and features you expect to use.
- Phone and voice ecosystem: Consider whether your household primarily uses Alexa, Siri and Apple devices, or another control method.
- Required hardware and radios: Some setups require a compatible controller or hub; Thread support is a separate capability from general Matter support.
- Automation and local control: Decide which automations you need and whether local control matters for the devices involved.
Amazon Alexa: a strong choice for voice control
Alexa can control Matter devices locally through compatible Echo devices. Amazon’s documentation lists supported Echo and eero models, and distinguishes general Matter support from Thread border-router support. Check the exact model and the device category you need before choosing an Echo as a controller: not every Matter-compatible model is necessarily a Thread border router, and a platform’s support for a category does not establish support for every feature of every product.
For an Alexa setup, look for an Echo with Matter support and verify the specific model against Amazon’s current documentation. If your devices require Thread, also confirm that the model is listed as a Thread border router in Amazon’s Matter and Thread compatibility information. The two capabilities should not be treated as interchangeable.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Apple Home: a natural fit for Apple households
Apple Home supports Matter accessories through the Home app and brings compatible accessories into Apple’s HomeKit app and Siri-control framework. Apple also documents grouping actions into automations triggered through Siri. That makes Apple Home a plausible alternative if your household already uses Apple devices and wants accessories coordinated through Apple’s home-control experience.
Before settling on Apple Home, verify the current home-hub hardware requirement for the remote-access and automation workflow you want. Apple’s Matter accessory setup guidance explains how Matter accessories are added to Apple Home; its Home app automation guide describes accessory coordination and automation. The exact hub requirement can depend on the workflow, so check Apple’s current guidance for your setup.

Samsung SmartThings: consider it for compatible mixed-brand devices
SmartThings is a credible option when the devices you want to combine are supported by its controller hardware and software. A TP-Link Matter guide identifies SmartThings Station and certain Samsung products among controller options, but that does not establish a complete or current compatibility matrix for every Samsung hub, radio or device feature.
Check Samsung’s current compatibility information against the exact controller model, radios and installed devices before migrating or buying hardware. Also confirm that SmartThings exposes the particular controls and automations you need for each device; compatibility at the platform level does not by itself establish feature parity.

Home Assistant: a more configurable path to investigate
Home Assistant appears in a 2026 secondary comparison as an option for smart-home control, but current official hardware and setup requirements are not established here. It may suit readers who value configurability, but first verify its currently supported hardware, integrations, maintenance demands and the voice-control bridge you want to use. Without those details, it is not possible to recommend a particular controller.

Matter can make it easier to choose devices that work across ecosystems, but the Matter label is not a promise that every platform exposes every product capability. Amazon’s compatibility material distinguishes Matter support from Thread border-router support; TP-Link’s Matter guide identifies controller options; and a 2026 platform comparison includes Home Assistant among the choices. Check the product category, controller requirements and desired capability for the exact device before buying or migrating.

A practical compatibility check before switching
- List the exact device models you plan to keep, including their device categories and the features you use.
- Choose a candidate platform based on your household’s phone and voice ecosystem, then check each model against that platform’s current compatibility information.
- Confirm controller requirements for the functions you care about. For Alexa, check Matter support and Thread border-router status separately; for Apple Home, confirm the home-hub requirement for your workflow; for SmartThings, check the current controller and radio matrix.
- Test the needed feature, not just setup where practical. Confirm that the controller provides the controls and automations you expect, rather than assuming that Matter or basic connection guarantees them.
