For most Windows PCs, Microsoft OneDrive is the easiest Google Drive replacement because it is built into Windows Explorer and works with Microsoft 365. Dropbox is the strongest all-purpose choice when you want mature Windows and macOS synchronization and sharing. Choose pCloud for media libraries or lifetime-storage plans, Sync.com when privacy and controlled sharing matter, and IDrive when computer backup and file recovery are as important as ordinary sync. Nextcloud, ownCloud and Syncthing replace a hosted subscription with self-managed infrastructure.
The right choice depends on whether you need a synchronized folder, a backup system, private encryption, collaboration with Office or iWork files, or control over where the server runs. The comparison below separates those jobs instead of treating every cloud service as interchangeable.
Quick comparison
Plan allowances and prices change frequently. The figures below are from 2026 comparison snapshots and should be checked on each provider’s current plan page before you move data.

First decide whether you need sync, backup or both
Synchronization keeps working files consistent
Sync services maintain a folder or virtual drive across computers. Edit a document on one machine and the changed version appears on another; sharing links and collaborative editing are usually built around the same files. Dropbox, OneDrive, pCloud and Sync.com are primarily in this category. Their selective-sync or placeholder features can save local disk space, but a synchronized deletion can also propagate unless the service retains versions or a separate backup exists.
Backup protects devices and older states
A backup product is designed to restore a computer, disk or earlier file state after accidental deletion, ransomware or hardware failure. IDrive adds unlimited-device backup, snapshots and historical versions to its sync features. Those capabilities address a different failure mode from simply mirroring a folder. If your requirement is “restore my laptop after its drive dies,” evaluate backup scope, retention and recovery speed rather than choosing by free cloud quota alone.
Virtual drives and placeholders change disk usage
OneDrive Files On-Demand and Dropbox Smart Sync can show cloud files in the file manager without downloading every byte. Selective sync instead lets you choose which folders are present locally. These modes reduce disk consumption but require an internet connection when an online-only file is opened. Keep critical travel files available offline before leaving reliable connectivity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Microsoft OneDrive: the lowest-friction Windows replacement
OneDrive is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11 and appears directly in File Explorer, so a Windows user can start without installing a separate file browser. The service integrates with Microsoft 365, including simultaneous document collaboration, and the 2026 snapshot lists a 1 TB Microsoft 365 Personal bundle. That combination makes it the default choice for households already using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
The trade-off is platform asymmetry. OneDrive supports macOS, but the cited review describes the Mac experience as less seamless than Windows. The free allowance is also smaller than several alternatives. Treat the 5 GB tier as a trial or as a place for a limited set of documents, not as a complete photo archive.
When OneDrive is the practical choice
- Your primary computers run Windows and you want files visible in the existing Explorer workflow.
- Your family or team already pays for Microsoft 365 and can use its included storage.
- You need Office files edited by several people at the same time.
When to choose something else
- Your household is mostly Mac and you want identical behavior across platforms.
- You need a larger no-cost allowance than the entry tier provides.
- You require a dedicated, long-retention computer backup rather than document synchronization.
Dropbox: the polished cross-platform baseline
Dropbox remains the straightforward recommendation when Windows and macOS users must share the same workflow. The desktop clients are mature, and Smart Sync can leave infrequently used files as placeholders while selective sync controls which folders are downloaded. Sharing links, team folders and predictable conflict handling are the reasons many mixed-device teams continue to use it.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The cost of that polish is a small free allowance: 2 GB in the cited 2026 snapshot. A 2 TB Plus plan was listed at approximately $12 per month at that time; treat that figure as a dated snapshot rather than a guaranteed current price. Dropbox is primarily a sync and sharing service, so pair it with a separate backup if you need protection from device loss or long-term historical recovery.
Use Dropbox when
- You switch between Windows and Mac and want the same desktop behavior on both.
- Sharing folders with clients or contractors is more important than Office licensing.
- You want online-only placeholders to keep a small SSD from filling up.
pCloud: media-friendly storage and lifetime plans
pCloud supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and its block-level synchronization can reduce the amount of data transferred when only part of a large file changes. The service is positioned around media sharing and offers lifetime-pricing options, which can appeal if you prefer a large one-time purchase to an indefinite subscription.
The cited TechRadar review lists 256-bit AES file encryption. Encryption terminology can describe different stages of protection, so read the current technical documentation if your threat model requires client-side or zero-knowledge encryption. pCloud does not include a built-in document editor, making it less suitable as an Office-style collaborative workspace than a storage-and-sharing repository.
Good pCloud use cases
- Music, video and photo libraries that benefit from media previews and sharing.
- Linux desktops alongside Windows and Mac machines.
- A long retention horizon where lifetime pricing is available and the terms suit you.
Sync.com: controlled sharing with a privacy emphasis
Sync.com combines Windows and Mac clients with Microsoft Office integration and privacy-oriented controls. The cited comparison describes end-to-end encryption, AES-256 protection, two-factor authentication and tools that let you control who can see shared files. Those features make it a strong candidate for confidential client folders or teams that need tighter sharing boundaries than a basic public link.
Comparison tables show a 5 GB base allowance and, in some listings, up to 25 GB. That difference can reflect staged bonuses or promotions, so confirm the current terms before assuming the larger number. Individual paid storage is listed from 2 TB in the 2026 snapshot.
Questions to ask before committing
- Can your collaborators use the required client or web features without an account?
- Which recovery and administrator controls remain available when end-to-end encryption is enabled?
- Does the current plan include the audit, sharing-expiry or two-factor options your team requires?
IDrive: choose it when recovery matters as much as sync
IDrive is the outlier in this group because it combines synchronization with broad backup. The cited review lists Windows and Mac support, 256-bit AES encryption, unlimited-device backup, snapshots and up to 30 prior file versions. Storage plans in that snapshot range from 100 GB to 100 TB, and the free tier is 10 GB.

That design is useful for a household with several computers, external disks or a laptop that must be restorable after a system failure. It also introduces more setup decisions than a simple synced folder: select the devices and directories to protect, understand the retention window, and verify that a restore produces usable files. Do not assume that a sync folder alone provides the same protection as a backup set with historical versions.
Privacy-first hosted alternatives
Proton Drive
The cited comparison presents Proton Drive with Swiss jurisdiction and zero-access encryption. Those are positioning claims, not a substitute for reading the current design documentation. Check where metadata is processed, how account recovery works and which desktop clients are available for your operating system before migrating sensitive files.
MEGA
MEGA is listed with 20 GB free and client-side end-to-end encryption. A generous allowance can make it useful for testing a private workflow, but evaluate transfer limits, recovery options and collaboration compatibility alongside storage size. Encryption can limit server-side previews or editing features, so verify that your applications still work as expected.

Self-hosted replacements: Nextcloud, ownCloud and Syncthing
Nextcloud
Nextcloud gives you a Google-Drive-like web interface and desktop synchronization while you provide the server. You can run it on hardware at home or on rented hosting. Capacity is determined by the disks and backup plan you choose, not by a consumer quota. The responsibilities move to you: operating-system updates, HTTPS certificates, user management, off-site backups, monitoring and recovery testing.
ownCloud
ownCloud is another self-hosted file platform. It can suit an organization that needs administrative control over deployment and storage location. As with Nextcloud, the software does not remove operational work; an unpatched server or a single unprotected disk can be a greater risk than a managed cloud account.
Syncthing
Syncthing replicates folders directly between devices rather than placing them in a provider-managed web drive. It is useful when you own several machines and want no hosted storage subscription. Replication is not automatically an off-site backup: if every paired device is stolen, encrypted or deleted at the same time, every copy can be lost. Add a geographically separate device or backup target for disaster recovery.

Migration procedure from Google Drive
- Inventory what you actually use. Separate active documents, shared folders, photos, archives and files that are already backed up elsewhere. Remember that Google’s 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Photos.
- Pick the service by job. Select a sync provider for working files, IDrive or another dedicated backup for device recovery, and a self-hosted option only if you can maintain it.
- Create the destination account and security controls. Turn on two-factor authentication where available, generate recovery codes and record the account owner for shared family or team storage.
- Install the Windows or macOS client. During setup, choose the local sync location and decide whether online-only files should appear as placeholders. Keep enough free disk space for folders you mark offline.
- Export or copy Google data without deleting the original. Use Google Drive’s download or export tools, preserve folder names and compare file counts. Native Google documents may need conversion to Microsoft Office or OpenDocument formats if the new service cannot edit them directly.
- Upload in batches. Start with a small folder, confirm that filenames, modified dates and sharing permissions behave as expected, then migrate larger folders. Large media collections can take days on a slow upstream connection.
- Recreate sharing deliberately. Existing Google links and permissions do not automatically transfer. Create new links, set expiration or edit rights where supported, and tell collaborators which link is authoritative.
- Validate recovery. Download several files from another computer, restore a deleted test file if versioning exists, and check that a backup product can recover a whole folder. Only after this test should you remove the Google copy.
Windows and macOS pitfalls
Confusing a placeholder with a local file
An online-only icon means the file may not open without connectivity. Mark travel documents, installers and emergency records as available offline before disconnecting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Duplicate names and conflict copies
Editing the same file on two offline computers can create conflicted copies. Establish one owner for spreadsheets and move team editing into a collaboration workflow instead of passing renamed copies around.
Unsupported filenames and paths
Windows and macOS do not permit exactly the same characters or path lengths. Test a representative folder before migrating an archive with deeply nested directories.
Deleting locally can delete everywhere
A synchronized deletion is normally intentional replication, not backup. Use the provider’s version history or a separate backup set to recover, and learn the retention period before relying on it.
Running two sync clients on one folder
Do not point two services at the same live directory. Their file watchers can create loops, conflict copies and unpredictable deletions. Keep separate roots and migrate by copying between them.
Bottom line
Choose OneDrive for the smoothest Windows and Microsoft 365 experience, Dropbox for dependable cross-platform sync, pCloud for media and lifetime-storage economics, Sync.com for privacy-oriented sharing, and IDrive when complete computer backup and historical recovery are essential. Choose Nextcloud, ownCloud or Syncthing only when you are prepared to operate the storage yourself. Whatever you select, test an actual restore and confirm the current allowance, encryption design and desktop support before retiring Google Drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is OneDrive better than Google Drive on Windows?
For Windows users who work in Microsoft 365, OneDrive is usually the lower-friction option because it is built into Windows Explorer and supports Microsoft document collaboration. Google Drive may still be preferable if your team relies on Google-native editing or needs its account-wide 15 GB shared allowance.
What works like Google Drive on a Mac?
Dropbox, pCloud and Sync.com all provide Mac clients and familiar synchronized-folder workflows. OneDrive also supports macOS, although the cited 2026 review describes its Mac experience as less seamless than its Windows integration.
What is the most private Google Drive alternative?
Sync.com, Proton Drive and MEGA are the privacy-focused options in the cited comparisons. Their encryption descriptions differ, so verify whether encryption is end-to-end, what metadata is visible, how account recovery works and which collaboration features remain available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I replace Google Drive with a NAS or Nextcloud?
Yes. Nextcloud or ownCloud can provide a Drive-like interface on a server you operate, while Syncthing replicates folders directly between devices. You must supply reliable hardware or hosting, updates, security controls, monitoring and an off-site backup.
Does cloud sync protect me from ransomware?
Not by itself. A synchronized ransomware change can propagate to every device. Use a service with snapshots or historical versions, such as the capabilities listed for IDrive, and maintain a separate backup that is not continuously writable from every computer.
How much free storage do these alternatives provide?
The cited 2026 snapshots list Dropbox at 2 GB, OneDrive at 5 GB, pCloud at 10 GB, Sync.com at 5 GB with up to 25 GB shown in some listings, IDrive at 10 GB and MEGA at 20 GB. Allowances and promotions can change, so confirm them before migrating.
