Microsoft Copilot Pages is the closest overall alternative to Google AI Mode Canvas when you want AI-generated prose to become an editable page or a small runnable tool. Choose Figma AI prototyping when the deliverable is a convincing, clickable product flow with connected screens and transitions. Choose Gemini Canvas or Gemini Enterprise Canvas when your team already works in Google services and needs documents, apps, slides, or code in one workspace.

The right choice depends less on which assistant writes the best first draft and more on the artifact you must hand off: an editable brief, a lightweight proof of concept, a high-fidelity UX flow, or an exportable document or presentation.

What Google AI Mode Canvas does

Google describes Canvas in AI Mode as a way to draft documents or create custom interactive tools inside Search. A prompt produces a working prototype in a Canvas side panel, exposes the underlying code, and lets you refine the result conversationally. That combination is unusual: the same interaction can start as prose, become a structured document, or turn into a small interactive experience.

  • What does it produce? An editable page, a runnable mini-app, a connected screen flow, a slide deck, or source code?
  • How much interaction can it express? A few controls in one page is a different requirement from navigation between many designed screens.
  • How does a team work on it? Sharing, comments, real-time co-authoring, reusable components, and design-system support are not interchangeable.
  • How does the work leave the tool? Export formats, code handoff, storage location, and administrator controls determine whether the prototype can move into the next stage.

No official source in the material available for this comparison publishes a directly comparable market-share, adoption, speed, or quality statistic. The recommendations below therefore use documented capabilities and access conditions rather than invented performance scores.

At-a-glance comparison

Tool Primary output Best fit Prototype character Important access or handoff condition
Microsoft Copilot Pages Editable AI page and lightweight code-enabled app Briefs, plans, research summaries, team documents, small in-memory tools Fast proof of concept; less design-system-oriented Work or school accounts need SharePoint or OneDrive storage; personal access depends on an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription. Code-enabled pages can be handed to App Builder.
Figma AI prototyping Interactive prototype inside a design file UX and product teams building connected product flows Highest-fidelity screen connections, transitions, and reusable components Requires edit access; the cited Figma help documentation places the interaction feature in Figma Design on paid plans.
Gemini Canvas Document, app, slide deck, or code workspace Google-centric individuals and teams Broad and flexible; less specifically documented for production UX flows Text can be exported to Google Docs and shared Canvas content can be copied for continued editing.
Gemini Enterprise Canvas Documents or slides beside chat Organizations needing governed Google workflows Useful for enterprise document and presentation production An administrator must enable the feature and configure permissions; documented exports include Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, and PDF.
Microsoft Loop Shared pages and reusable collaboration components Teams prioritizing ongoing co-authoring Collaboration workspace rather than a specialized prototype generator Its advantage is real-time co-authoring and modular components, not a one-off AI page-generation flow.

Microsoft Copilot Pages: the closest document-plus-prototype match

Microsoft defines Copilot Pages as a dynamic, persistent canvas in Copilot chat designed for AI-powered group collaboration. You can move a Copilot response into a side-by-side page, edit the content directly, ask Copilot to revise it, and share the page with colleagues. That makes Pages the nearest conceptual replacement when your starting point is an AI-written plan or document and your endpoint might be a small interactive tool.

What Copilot Pages can produce

For ordinary documents, use a page as a living brief rather than a static answer. A research summary, project plan, requirements list, or workshop outline can remain editable while Copilot restructures sections, expands an explanation, or changes the tone. Colleagues can receive the same page instead of a sequence of copied chat responses.

For lightweight applications, Microsoft documents code-enabled pages. Describe the app in natural language, preview the generated code, and use follow-up prompts to refine behavior, user-interface details, and logic. A completed prototype can then be handed to App Builder. This is appropriate for a small in-memory tool or proof of concept, not evidence that a production application is ready without engineering review.

Step-by-step: create an editable page or small tool

  1. Open Copilot chat with the account that will own the work. Establish whether you are using a work or school account or a personal account before writing the prompt, because storage and subscription eligibility differ.
  2. Describe the artifact and its audience. For a document, specify the sections, length, decision to support, and people who will edit it. For a tool, specify inputs, outputs, states, and the smallest useful interaction.
  3. Move the response to a side-by-side page. The page becomes the persistent working surface instead of leaving the content only in chat.
  4. Edit the page directly and request targeted changes. Ask for a new section, a reordered plan, clearer labels, or a changed interaction. Keep each request narrow enough to verify.
  5. For a code-enabled page, preview the generated code. Check that controls, data handling, and state changes match the intended behavior before sharing the prototype.
  6. Test the critical path. Enter realistic values, trigger validation or empty states, and confirm that the result remains understandable after a user makes a mistake.
  7. Share the page or hand the prototype to App Builder. Preserve the page as the explanation of the problem and the prototype as the demonstration of the proposed behavior.

Why choose it

  • It keeps prose, decisions, and a runnable concept close together.
  • Natural-language follow-up is useful when the requirements are still changing.
  • Sharing is built into the page model, so a team can review one persistent artifact rather than reconciling separate chat transcripts.

Where it falls short

Copilot Pages is not primarily a design-system environment. If stakeholders need a polished flow with carefully controlled screen layouts, reusable components, and transition behavior, Figma is a better fit. Microsoft’s storage requirements also matter: work or school users need SharePoint or OneDrive storage, while personal access depends on eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Verify those conditions before designing a workflow around Pages.

Figma AI prototyping: best for high-fidelity clickable product flows

Figma’s AI prototyping agent is designed to turn static designs into interactive prototypes. It can connect screens, set transitions, and wire interactions directly in a design file. Figma’s help documentation also describes adding multiple interactions and connections, including navigation menus and back or next buttons, followed by an interactive preview.

This is the strongest alternative when the success criterion is not merely that something runs, but that reviewers can experience a believable product journey. The design file remains the source of truth for layouts, components, and interaction decisions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step: turn static screens into a clickable flow

  1. Prepare the screens in a Figma Design file. Name screens and key components clearly so that generated connections have an unambiguous target.
  2. Confirm edit access and plan eligibility. The documented interaction feature requires edit access and is available in Figma Design on paid plans according to the cited help page.
  3. Open the AI prototyping agent and describe the journey. State the entry screen, the action a user takes, the destination, and the expected transition. Include alternate paths such as cancel, back, or validation failure.
  4. Review every generated connection. AI can add several interactions at once, but a connected screen is not automatically the correct screen. Check labels, destinations, trigger types, and transition timing.
  5. Add explicit navigation controls. Ask for or create menu, back, next, and confirmation interactions where they are needed. Verify that the flow can be completed without relying on an accidental click target.
  6. Preview the prototype. Walk through the main path and at least one error or empty state. Compare what the prototype does with the intended product requirement.
  7. Refine the design file, not just the preview. Correct component states, spacing, labels, and interaction rules at the source so later screens inherit the decision.
  8. Share the prototype with the team. Use the same file for design review, product feedback, and eventual handoff rather than exporting disconnected screenshots.

Why choose it

  • Connected screens and transitions communicate product behavior more convincingly than a text document.
  • Interactions stay next to reusable components and the rest of the design system.
  • Design and product teams can review a flow visually before implementation begins.

Trade-offs

Figma is a design and prototyping environment, not a general-purpose long-form document workspace. A product brief, research synthesis, or policy document may need to live elsewhere. It also has a harder access gate than a simple share link: the person creating or editing interactions needs the appropriate edit access and plan.

Gemini Canvas and Gemini Enterprise Canvas: Google-native alternatives

Gemini Canvas is Google’s interactive workspace for creating or editing a document, app, slide deck, or code. Google characterizes Canvas as an interactive space for refining and sharing work, including real prototype creation with Gemini. It is the natural choice when the team already organizes work around Google services and wants one familiar place to move between writing, code, and presentations.

Step-by-step: use Gemini Canvas

  1. Open Canvas in Gemini and choose the artifact type. Decide whether the first deliverable is a document, app, slide deck, or code project; the choice gives the prompt a clearer target.
  2. Describe the purpose and constraints. Include audience, required sections or screens, inputs and outputs, and what should happen when a user takes the primary action.
  3. Refine in the interactive workspace. Request structural changes, additional states, shorter copy, or revised logic while keeping the current artifact visible.
  4. Inspect the result as a reader or user. For documents, check hierarchy and completeness. For apps and code, exercise the main path and inspect the generated behavior before treating it as a proof of concept.
  5. Export or continue editing. Google documents exporting text to Google Docs. Shared Canvas content can also be copied so another person can continue editing it.

Gemini Enterprise Canvas

Enterprise Canvas places documents or slides beside chat and adds documented export paths to Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, or PDF. That makes it more suitable for organizations that need a controlled presentation workflow rather than an informal personal prototype.

Availability is not automatic. An administrator must enable the feature and configure permissions. Before promising Canvas to a department, confirm who can create, view, share, export, and retain the resulting documents or slides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strengths and limitations

  • Strength: one workspace spans documents, apps, slides, and code, which is useful when a concept changes form during a project.
  • Strength: documented exports make it practical to move written content into Google Docs or enterprise presentations into Slides, PowerPoint, or PDF.
  • Limitation: the available documentation is broader than it is specific about production-grade UX flows. For intricate screen-to-screen interaction design, Figma provides the clearer specialized model.
  • Limitation: enterprise administrators control availability and permissions, so a technically suitable workflow may still be unavailable to a particular team.

Microsoft Loop: choose it when collaboration is the product

Microsoft Loop is the Microsoft option to consider when real-time co-authoring and reusable components matter more than generating a single AI page. It is a collaboration-oriented workspace for keeping modular content current across a team. That makes it useful after an AI-generated draft exists: stakeholders can edit requirements, decisions, checklists, and project components together.

Loop is not the closest replacement for the interactive-prototype behavior of AI Mode Canvas. It is better understood as the shared operating surface around the work. Use Copilot Pages when you want the AI response, persistent page, and lightweight prototype in one flow; use Loop when the long-lived team process and reusable collaboration components are the priority.

Which alternative should you choose?

If your primary need is… Start with… Reason Watch for…
Turning an AI-written plan into an editable team artifact Copilot Pages Responses can move into a persistent side-by-side page, be edited, revised by Copilot, and shared. Microsoft storage and subscription eligibility.
Building a quick runnable proof of concept from plain language Copilot Pages code-enabled pages You can describe the app, preview generated code, refine behavior, UI, and logic, then hand it to App Builder. Inspect the code and behavior; a prototype is not a production review.
Demonstrating a polished multi-screen product journey Figma AI prototyping The agent connects screens, sets transitions, and wires interactions in the design file. Edit access and paid-plan availability for the interaction feature.
Keeping documents, apps, slides, and code in a Google-native workspace Gemini Canvas Canvas supports all four artifact types and provides documented document-sharing and export paths. Enterprise controls may require administrator enablement.
Producing governed presentations for multiple office formats Gemini Enterprise Canvas Documents or slides sit beside chat and can be exported to Google Slides, PowerPoint, or PDF. Permissions and feature availability are administrator-controlled.
Maintaining a continuously edited team workspace Microsoft Loop Real-time co-authoring and modular components are its central advantage. It is not a specialized AI prototype generator.

A practical selection method

1. Define the handoff before choosing the tool

Write one sentence describing what another person must receive. Examples include an editable brief, a clickable flow for usability review, a small calculator-like tool, or a presentation in a required office format. If the sentence contains screens, transitions, or component states, start with Figma. If it contains sections, decisions, and shared editing, start with Copilot Pages or Loop. If it names Google Docs, Slides, PowerPoint, or PDF, check Gemini’s documented export path first.

2. Separate fidelity from speed

A fast prototype can answer whether an idea is understandable. A high-fidelity prototype can answer whether a specific interaction and visual hierarchy work. Copilot Pages favors speed from prose to a runnable concept. Figma favors controlled interaction design. Gemini offers breadth across artifact types but is less specifically documented for production UX flows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the account and governance path early

  • For Microsoft work or school use, confirm SharePoint or OneDrive storage and the organization’s sharing policy.
  • For personal Copilot access, verify that the Microsoft 365 subscription is eligible.
  • For Figma, confirm edit rights and whether the team’s plan includes the documented AI interaction feature.
  • For Gemini Enterprise Canvas, ask the administrator whether the feature is enabled and which export and sharing permissions apply.

4. Keep the prototype proportional to the decision

Do not build a full product when the decision concerns one uncertain step. A single Copilot code-enabled page may be enough to test a calculation or form sequence. A small set of Figma screens may be enough to test navigation. A Gemini document or slide may be enough to align stakeholders before anyone builds an interface.

How to run a reliable AI-prototyping workflow

  1. Start with a written requirement. State the user, goal, inputs, expected output, and one success condition.
  2. Choose the artifact-first tool. Use Copilot Pages for prose-to-page or lightweight app work, Figma for connected product screens, Gemini for Google-native documents, apps, slides, or code, and Loop for ongoing co-authoring.
  3. Ask for the smallest complete version. Limit the first prompt to the primary path and one important alternative state. This makes review possible.
  4. Review generated structure before polishing. Check headings, screen destinations, interaction triggers, labels, and logic before spending time on wording or visual details.
  5. Test an error, empty, or cancellation state. Interactive work that succeeds only on the happy path is not ready for a meaningful review.
  6. Invite the right reviewers. Document owners need editing access; product reviewers need a clickable preview; administrators need to validate storage, permissions, and export.
  7. Record the handoff. Keep the requirement, prototype, known limitations, and next action together so a later builder can tell what was demonstrated and what remains unproven.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Choosing a document tool for a screen-flow problem

If reviewers must understand navigation, transitions, or component states, prose alone will create ambiguity. Move the interaction into Figma or use a code-enabled Copilot page for a deliberately small runnable demonstration.

Choosing a design tool for a long-lived policy or plan

A clickable flow is not a substitute for an editable requirements document. Keep the narrative and decisions in Copilot Pages, Gemini Canvas, or Loop, then link the visual prototype through your team’s normal sharing process.

Assuming sharing means everyone can edit

Page sharing, edit access, storage location, and administrator permissions are separate checks. Test the exact account type that a collaborator will use, not only the account that created the artifact.

Treating generated code as self-validating

Copilot code-enabled pages expose a preview, which is an opportunity to inspect behavior rather than a guarantee of correctness. Exercise realistic inputs, review the generated logic, and document what the prototype does not cover before handing it to App Builder or an engineering team.

Ignoring export requirements until the end

If the recipient needs Google Slides, PowerPoint, PDF, or Google Docs, select a workflow with a documented export path at the start. Export is part of the deliverable, not an afterthought.

Overbuilding the first version

AI makes it easy to request a large artifact. A smaller page, a few connected screens, or one focused app state is easier to test and produces clearer feedback than an impressive but unreviewable prototype.

Final recommendation by audience

  • Microsoft 365 team starting with prose: use Copilot Pages, and move to code-enabled pages only when a small runnable interaction will answer the next question.
  • Product or UX team presenting a flow: use Figma AI prototyping so connections, transitions, and reusable components remain in the design file.
  • Google Workspace user moving between formats: use Gemini Canvas; use Enterprise Canvas when administrator-controlled access and exports to Slides, PowerPoint, or PDF are required.
  • Team whose main challenge is continuous co-authoring: use Microsoft Loop as the shared workspace, adding a specialized prototype tool when interaction fidelity matters.
