If you want AI-assisted search without giving up visible sources or privacy controls, start with Brave Search or Kagi. Brave is the free starting point, with AI answers that link to references and an independent-index approach. Kagi is paid and ad-free, with optional Privacy Pass authentication and a search mix that includes its own indexes and anonymized requests to traditional indexes. Neither service should be treated as fully anonymous, and citations still need checking.
Which AI search alternative should you choose?
- Choose Brave Search if you want to try source-linked AI answers without paying for search. Brave describes its results as coming from an independent index and its search as ad-supported, with an optional paid ad-free experience.
- Choose Kagi if you are willing to pay for ad-free search and value its stated mix of search sources and optional Privacy Pass authentication.
This is a fit-based choice, not a ranking of answer quality. The available product and policy descriptions do not establish which service has better results, broader coverage, or more reliable citations.

Brave Search pairs web search with AI features. Its official AI help page says: “When you ask Brave Search a question, we provide a concise summary answer along with references to sources to back up the key claims.” Those references let you inspect the pages behind an answer rather than relying on the summary alone.

How to evaluate either service for your searches
- Try representative queries. Use the kinds of searches you actually make, including questions where you expect sources or multiple perspectives.
- Inspect the references. For an AI answer, open its cited pages and verify that they support the claims. A citation is not a guarantee of accuracy.
- Check source coverage for your needs. Brave describes its own independent index; Kagi describes a mix of its indexes and anonymized requests to traditional indexes. These claims do not establish which will serve a particular query better.
- Review current privacy terms. Look specifically at search-query handling, AI conversation storage, shared conversations, debugging retention, and any authentication choices you expect to use.
- Decide whether the business model fits. Brave offers an ad-supported option and an optional paid ad-free experience; Kagi is paid and ad-free.
Product features and policies can change. Check the providers’ current pages before relying on a particular feature or retention period.
