Topaz Video is the clearest dedicated choice for restoring degraded VHS transfers, home movies, and other archival footage. It combines denoising, deinterlacing, focus recovery, stabilization, frame interpolation, and enlargement in one restoration-oriented application. Choose DaVinci Resolve Studio when the upscale must be part of a complete edit, color, audio, and delivery workflow. Choose Topaz Astra in Adobe Firefly when you have a short clip and prefer a browser-based process over local rendering.
No upscaler can recover detail that was never captured. The best result comes from diagnosing interlacing, noise, blur, compression, and camera movement first, then testing a short representative clip before processing an entire archive.
Which AI video upscaler is best for old footage?
The right choice depends on whether restoration or finishing is your main job:

There is no independent, dated benchmark in the available product material that proves one model produces the best result on every source. Judge outputs at the intended viewing size and frame by frame, not from one impressive still.

What an AI upscaler can—and cannot—restore
Upscaling increases the number of output pixels. AI models also infer likely edges, textures, and motion from patterns learned during training. That can make a small face, sign, or object easier to see, but inferred detail is not a recovered record of the original scene.
Problems AI tools can address
- Low resolution: Enlarging a small digital file or a standard-definition transfer for a modern display.
- Noise: Reducing grain-like sensor noise, low-light speckle, and some transfer noise before enlargement.
- Interlacing: Separating the two fields in interlaced video so comb-shaped edges do not become part of the upscale.
- Soft focus: Recovering apparent edge definition when blur is moderate rather than severe.
- Camera movement: Stabilizing footage that wobbles because of a handheld camera or an unstable transfer.
- Frame-rate changes: Creating intermediate frames for smoother slow motion or a different delivery frame rate.
- Compression damage: Hiding some blockiness and ringing, although heavy blocking can also be mistaken for real texture.
Problems no model can reliably solve
- Frames that were never recorded, such as a face hidden by glare or severe motion blur.
- Clipped highlights, crushed shadows, and tape dropouts that contain no usable image information.
- Audio distortion, missing sections, or incorrect synchronization; these require separate audio work.
- Severe generational loss where repeated copying has erased both edges and texture.
Because an AI model may invent plausible-looking pores, hair, lettering, or fabric, restoration should preserve the untouched source and document every processing decision.
Diagnose the source before selecting a model
Do not begin by choosing “4K.” First identify what is wrong with the footage. A five-minute inspection can prevent hours of processing the wrong model or order of operations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck for interlacing and field order
Pause during movement and look at vertical edges, hands, and thin lines. Combing or doubled edges indicate interlacing. A deinterlacer should reconstruct progressive frames before aggressive enlargement. Field-order errors can make motion jump or appear to move backward, so confirm the correct field interpretation in the project settings.
Separate noise from genuine texture
View a dark scene and a flat wall at 100 percent. Fine dancing speckles are often noise; stable film grain or tape texture may be part of the historical character. Over-denoising can erase hair, fabric, and facial contours, leaving waxy faces that a sharpening pass cannot convincingly repair.
Measure blur and camera movement
Look at moving hands, walking subjects, and pans. If edges trail across several frames, the missing detail cannot be reconstructed perfectly. Stabilization can improve viewing, but excessive correction may crop the frame or create wobbling around the edges.
Identify compression and transfer defects
Block boundaries, mosquito noise around text, chroma smearing, tape dropout lines, and head-switching noise each require different treatment. A model designed for clean enlargement may emphasize these defects instead of removing them.

Inspect cadence and audio sync
Old footage may have been converted between frame rates or captured with irregular cadence. Watch a pan and listen for lip-sync drift. Frame interpolation can smooth motion, but it cannot repair a damaged audio track; solve cadence and synchronization deliberately in the editing stage.

Topaz Video: best dedicated choice for archival restoration
Topaz Labs describes Topaz Video as professional AI enhancement software for denoising low-light footage, recovering and upscaling old archival video to 4K, restoring focus, and adjusting frame rate by creating new frames. Its listed audiences include archivists, historians, filmmakers, creators, hobbyists, and families restoring home movies.
Why it suits VHS and home movies
- Restoration functions are presented together rather than hidden inside a general editing timeline.
- Models and controls cover upscaling, denoising, restoration, stabilization, slow motion, and interpolation.
- A standalone workflow makes it practical to process a folder of clips before importing selected results into an editor.
How to use it conservatively
- Import a short section containing a face, text or signage, motion, and a dark shot.
- Choose the model intended for the dominant defect instead of stacking every enhancement.
- Deinterlace or reduce noise when the source requires it, then apply enlargement.
- Keep sharpening restrained. A crisp still can hide halos and flicker that become obvious during playback.
- Render a test, compare it with the source at normal viewing size, and inspect difficult frames at 100 percent.
Topaz Video is the strongest starting point when the archive itself is the project. It is not a guarantee of authentic detail, and the vendor material does not provide an independent numerical quality benchmark.
DaVinci Resolve Studio: best when restoration is part of finishing
Blackmagic Design documents Super Scale as a Studio feature that increases resolution with enhanced detail and selectable scaling factors. Resolve also provides editing, color correction, audio post, titles, compositing, and delivery in the same project.
Choose Resolve Studio when
- The footage must be cut, color-matched, mixed, subtitled, and delivered after restoration.
- You need timeline-level control over which shots receive enhancement.
- Your team already manages media, proxies, color grades, and exports in Resolve.
Resolve edition and plugin requirements
Super Scale is a Studio feature. Topaz’s plugin documentation states that Topaz Video can run inside DaVinci Resolve Studio, while the free Resolve edition will not load the plugin. The same documentation warns that 3–4x upscaling in the plugin can reduce performance and UI responsiveness, so previewing may require lower-resolution timelines, shorter ranges, or pre-rendered clips.
Resolve workflow
- Set the project frame rate and field interpretation before placing clips on the timeline.
- Use Resolve’s media and color tools to correct obvious exposure, white-balance, and contrast problems without destroying highlight or shadow information.
- Test Super Scale on a representative shot. Compare selectable scaling factors rather than assuming the largest factor is best.
- If a Topaz plugin pass is needed, apply it only to shots that benefit; render or cache demanding sections before continuing to edit.
- Complete grading, audio, titles, and delivery from the restored high-quality timeline.
Resolve is the more efficient choice for an editor who needs one finishing environment, but it is less focused than a standalone restoration application when every clip requires specialized cleanup.
Topaz Astra in Adobe Firefly: convenient cloud enhancement for short clips
Adobe describes Topaz Astra as an AI-powered video upscaler in Firefly. It is aimed at improving low-resolution footage, restoring detail and texture, reducing noise, and enhancing clarity.
Upload and output constraints
The Firefly page shows MP4 or MOV uploads that are 5–20 seconds long and under 200 MB, with export up to 4K. Treat those values as page-specific and time-sensitive: Adobe can change limits, available models, queue behavior, credits, and plan requirements.
When the cloud route makes sense
- You need a quick test of a short excerpt and do not want to install local software.
- Your computer lacks a suitable GPU or you prefer not to manage local model files.
- The clip is non-sensitive and the upload and retention terms fit your archive policy.
When not to use it
- Long VHS captures that exceed the displayed duration or file-size limits.
- Private family, legal, or historical material that cannot be uploaded to a third-party service.
- Projects requiring repeatable local processing, offline access, or a documented model version.
For a long archive, cloud upload limits can turn a simple enhancement into a series of trims, uploads, downloads, and reassembly steps. Test one short segment first and verify that the returned file retains the expected frame rate and audio behavior.

Local versus cloud processing
| Consideration | Local processing | Cloud processing |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Source files remain under your control, subject to your own storage and backup practices. | Footage must be uploaded; review the provider’s current handling and retention terms before using sensitive material. |
| Hardware | Requires a computer capable of running the application and model; faster hardware generally shortens renders. | Rendering occurs on the provider’s infrastructure, so a modest computer can submit a clip. |
| Speed | No upload wait, but long renders can occupy the machine. Plugin use in Resolve may reduce UI responsiveness at 3–4x scaling. | Upload time, queue time, processing time, and download time all matter; limits may require splitting footage. |
| Repeatability | Keep the application version, model, scale, and export settings with the master for reproducibility. | Model availability and service behavior can change; save the returned file and record the date and settings shown. |
| Best use | Large archives, sensitive footage, batch work, and controlled restoration pipelines. | Short, non-sensitive clips and quick experiments without local installation. |
A restoration workflow that minimizes artificial faces
1. Preserve an untouched source master
Keep the original capture exactly as received. Make a working copy for deinterlacing, denoising, and enhancement. Never overwrite the only copy with an AI render.
2. Build a diagnostic sample
Select several seconds that include a face, printed text, fine texture, camera movement, a dark area, and a representative audio passage. A single talking head on a bright background is not enough to expose temporal artifacts.
3. Fix structural defects first
Interpret fields and cadence correctly. Remove or reduce severe noise before enlargement when noise dominates the frame. Repair obvious crop, rotation, or exposure problems before judging detail recovery.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Upscale in measured increments
Compare the smallest output size that meets the delivery need with a larger option. A higher pixel count is not automatically more faithful. Watch for ringing along high-contrast edges and repeated textures that look algorithmically stamped.
5. Apply face recovery carefully
Face models can make a distant subject more legible, but they can also replace distinctive features with generic ones. Compare eyes, teeth, hairlines, glasses, and facial asymmetry against the source. If identity-critical details change, reduce or disable face enhancement.
6. Evaluate motion, not only stills
Play the result at normal speed and step through difficult passages. Look for faces that change shape between frames, text that shimmers, halos that pulse, and backgrounds that bend as subjects move.
7. Export an archival master
Use a high-quality, minimally compressed export suitable for future editing. Keep the original audio when it is usable, and avoid making a web codec your only restored copy.

8. Create delivery copies separately
Make smaller web, phone, or social versions from the archival master. This prevents repeated recompression and lets you change delivery dimensions without rerunning restoration.

How to judge output quality
Faces and skin
Check whether eyes, mouths, hair, and glasses remain stable from frame to frame. Natural skin should retain believable variation; a plastic or airbrushed surface usually indicates excessive denoising or face processing.
Text and straight edges
Read signs, labels, and subtitles at the intended display size. Then inspect high-contrast lettering for double edges, halos, and crawling pixels. AI may make text look sharper while changing its actual shapes.
Motion consistency
Watch pans, waving hands, and walking subjects. Temporal flicker, duplicated limbs, rubbery outlines, and sudden background changes are more damaging than modest softness.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Dark scenes and highlights
Ensure denoising has not removed shadow texture or turned small lights into glowing rings. Compare bright windows and lamps with the source to confirm that sharpening did not create clipped-looking halos.
Viewing-size comparison
Judge the clip on the screen and at the size where people will actually watch it. A 100-percent inspection is useful for finding defects, but it should not make you reject a natural result that looks convincing at normal playback size.
Common failure modes and fixes
Comb-like edges remain
Return to field interpretation and deinterlace before enlargement. If the source was already deinterlaced incorrectly, locate an earlier capture or test a different field order.
Faces look waxy or unfamiliar
Reduce denoising and face recovery, then compare with a conservative pass. Preserve the original beside the enhanced version so identity can be checked directly.
Edges have bright or dark halos
Lower sharpening and avoid stacking multiple edge-enhancement stages. Evaluate thin text and high-contrast objects, where halos are easiest to see.

Fine detail flickers
Use a model or setting with stronger temporal consistency, reduce aggressive texture recovery, and inspect the entire shot rather than selecting the best-looking frame.
Playback becomes sluggish in Resolve
At 3–4x scaling, the Topaz plugin may reduce performance and interface responsiveness. Preview a lower-resolution timeline, cache the effect, render a short range, or process selected clips outside the live timeline.
Cloud processing cannot accept the file
Confirm that the clip is MP4 or MOV, between 5 and 20 seconds, and under the displayed 200 MB limit. Trim a diagnostic excerpt rather than repeatedly uploading the entire archive. Verify audio and frame rate after downloading the result.
Costs, licensing, and changing requirements
The available product pages do not establish a single current price comparison. Subscription terms, perpetual-license availability, model access, regional pricing, cloud credits, upload limits, and marketplace inventory are volatile. Check the vendor’s current licensing page immediately before purchase.
For budgeting, separate the software license from the cost of storage, backup, GPU time, and operator time. A free editor edition may be adequate for cutting, yet still lack Studio-only Super Scale or the ability to load a restoration plugin. A cloud plan may appear simple for one short clip but become impractical when an archive requires many uploads and downloads.
Choosing by project type
Family VHS archive
Capture and preserve the original files, diagnose interlacing and tape noise, and start with Topaz Video on short samples. Keep face enhancement conservative because recognizable identity matters more than synthetic sharpness.
Historical or documentary footage
Favor a repeatable local workflow, retain untouched sources, and record model, scale, and export settings. Use Resolve Studio when the restored shots must be graded, mixed, captioned, and assembled into a finished program.
One short social clip
Topaz Astra in Firefly can be convenient if the clip meets the displayed 5–20-second and under-200-MB limits and contains no material you should not upload. Download the result and create platform-specific copies from it.
Large batch of mixed-quality files
Sort clips by defect rather than applying one preset to everything. Process interlaced, noisy, blurred, and stable clips in separate groups, then review representative outputs before committing the full batch.
What to document with every restored master
- Original filename, capture date if known, and source format.
- Application name and version.
- Model or enhancement mode, scale factor, denoising and face settings.
- Deinterlacing, stabilization, interpolation, crop, frame-rate, and color decisions.
- Export codec, frame size, frame rate, audio settings, and export date.
- Any sections that remain uncertain, damaged, or visibly synthetic.
This record lets you reproduce a result, explain why a face or sign looks different, and create a better version when models improve without losing the historical source.
