For most college students, the best setup is a three-tool workflow rather than one all-purpose app. Use ChatGPT Study Mode when you need an interactive tutor that asks questions and helps you reason. Use NotebookLM or Gemini Notebook when answers, quizzes, and flashcards must stay grounded in your lecture notes, PDFs, or readings. Use Quizlet when you want the broadest single workflow for AI flashcards, practice tests, study guides, PDF summaries, and homework help.
The right choice depends on four questions: whether the tool can cite your own sources, how actively it tutors, which review formats it creates, and whether your school account permits the feature. The comparison and workflows below show where each tool fits, how to use it without outsourcing your learning, and what to check when a feature is missing.
Quick verdict: which AI study tool should you use?
| Your main need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Understand a difficult concept or diagnose where you are stuck | ChatGPT Study Mode | It is designed for guided questioning, explanations, and reasoning practice instead of only returning a summary. |
| Turn your own notes, slides, or readings into source-based quizzes and flashcards | NotebookLM or Gemini Notebook | Google documents these experiences as grounded in the documents you provide, with citations back to source material in supported experiences. |
| Use one familiar platform for flashcards, tests, study guides, PDF summaries, and homework help | Quizlet AI | Its documented AI feature set covers the widest combination of review formats in one workflow. |
| Build a reliable exam-preparation process | Combine the tools | Use source-grounded generation to create material, a tutor mode to work through errors, and spaced review to test recall. |
No authoritative source in this comparison publishes a directly comparable learning-outcome statistic or current cross-product price. Treat plan limits, institutional access, and feature names as account-specific and verify them in your own app before relying on a workflow.

Source grounding and citations
Source grounding means the system is asked to work from documents you supplied rather than from a broad, unspecified knowledge base. A grounded answer should let you open the relevant passage, slide, or page and check the claim. NotebookLM and Gemini Notebook are explicitly described as using supplied sources; supported explanations can cite those sources. ChatGPT Study Mode accepts uploaded files and images, but its scope is broader, so you should ask it to show its reasoning and then compare important answers with your course material.
Tutoring behavior
A tutor-style interaction asks what you already know, gives a manageable prompt, waits for your attempt, and adjusts the next explanation. A summarizer simply produces text. If your goal is to fix a misconception, prefer a mode that makes you answer intermediate questions rather than one that hands you a finished solution.
Review depth
Look for more than one card set. Useful review may include basic recall cards, application questions, practice tests, explanations for wrong answers, and a study guide that organizes a whole unit. Quizlet documents all of these categories; Google documents source-grounded flashcards and quizzes.

Check whether your current app accepts the material you actually have: PDF readings, slide exports, typed notes, scans, or images. OpenAI explicitly documents file and image uploads for Study Mode. Education-domain Google features can be controlled by a school administrator, so a public announcement does not guarantee that the same control appears in every campus account.

ChatGPT Study Mode: best for interactive tutoring
OpenAI introduced Study Mode on July 29, 2025. Its help documentation describes a learning experience that can use uploaded files or images, ask questions, guide you through concepts, and provide explanations. It also warns that Study Mode does not replace a teacher, tutor, course materials, or academic requirements.
What it does well
- Breaks a problem into questions instead of immediately presenting a final answer.
- Helps identify the exact step or prerequisite where your understanding failed.
- Supports conversational practice for definitions, derivations, essay planning, and flashcard-style recall.
- Can work from an uploaded worksheet, textbook excerpt, diagram, or lecture image.
A practical Study Mode session
- State the learning goal. Say what course, unit, and assessment you are preparing for. For example: “I need to understand the assumptions behind a confidence interval well enough to solve new problems.”
- Set a no-spoilers rule. Ask it to give one question at a time, wait for your answer, and provide a hint before a solution.
- Upload the relevant material. Add the problem statement, your notes, or an image of the diagram. Tell it which source is authoritative if files conflict.
- Attempt every step yourself. Type your reasoning, even when uncertain. The tutor can only diagnose a misconception that you expose.
- Request a transfer question. Ask for a new problem with different numbers or a different context to test whether you learned a method rather than memorized an example.
- Verify the result. Check equations, terminology, and citations against the instructor’s materials and answer key. Keep a correction log for anything that was wrong or ambiguous.
Where it needs caution
Study Mode’s willingness to explain does not make every explanation correct. It can also draw on a broader knowledge base than your class uses, which may introduce notation or assumptions your instructor does not accept. Require it to distinguish a statement found in your upload from a general explanation, and never submit generated prose or calculations without checking your course rules.
NotebookLM and Gemini Notebook: best for source-grounded study materials
Google describes NotebookLM as able to create flashcards and quizzes from your sources. Its Learning Guide can act as a tutor for uploaded material, and documented explanations for missed questions can point back to the original source. Google for Education describes Gemini Notebook as free and grounded only in information you provide, with study guides, flashcards, practice quizzes, and step-by-step explanations with citations.
Google’s education documentation says interactive flashcards and quizzes are grounded only in supplied documents. The education rollout began September 2, 2025, and visibility can depend on administrator settings. Product names, controls, and regional availability may change, so use the label and options shown in your current account.

Prepare your sources
- Upload the lecture slides, reading PDFs, lab handouts, and your own notes for one course unit.
- Separate units into sensible notebooks or source groups so a quiz does not mix unrelated chapters.
- Use readable text whenever possible; a poor scan can produce missing or distorted terms.
- Add the syllabus or instructor study guide when it defines required terminology or learning objectives.
Create and audit a quiz or card set
- Choose the source set. Confirm that every document you expect is present and that outdated drafts are removed or clearly labeled.
- Generate a study guide first. Ask for key concepts, definitions, relationships, and unresolved gaps. This gives you an outline to inspect before drilling yourself.
- Generate flashcards at more than one difficulty. Request basic recall cards plus application or “why” questions. A card that asks for a definition alone will not prepare you for a case-based exam.
- Generate a practice quiz. Specify the number of questions, formats, and whether answers should be hidden until you respond.
- Use citations to audit errors. For each missed or surprising answer, open the cited passage. If no passage supports the claim, mark the item for deletion or correction.
- Repeat with only the weak sources. A focused notebook for the chapter you missed usually produces more useful practice than regenerating an entire semester.
Strengths and limitations
The main advantage is traceability: you can test whether an answer is supported by the documents you selected. This is particularly useful when a professor’s terminology differs from a general textbook. The limitation is equally important: a source-grounded system cannot fill a gap that is absent from your uploads. If the notes omit a prerequisite, ask your instructor or use a general tutor separately, then record the approved explanation in your course materials.
Quizlet AI: broadest documented review workflow
Quizlet’s official feature description lists an AI flashcard maker, AI-generated practice tests, AI study guides, a PDF summarizer, and AI-powered homework help. It also describes teachers converting notes, slides, and readings into materials and sharing sets with classes.
When Quizlet is the practical choice
- You want flashcards and tests in the same familiar platform.
- You need to convert a PDF, slide deck, or reading into a reusable set quickly.
- You want several review modes rather than a single chat conversation.
- Your instructor already distributes or collects sets in Quizlet.
A reliable Quizlet workflow
- Import the narrowest useful source. Use one lecture, chapter, or exam unit instead of an entire course archive.
- Generate the first set. Inspect every card for duplicated wording, vague prompts, and facts that are not actually in the source.
- Edit for retrieval. Put one idea on each card, include units and conditions, and turn long answers into a prompt followed by a short explanation.
- Take an AI practice test. Mix question types when your assessment does. Record why each wrong answer was tempting.
- Build a study guide from errors. Add the corrected concept and a new example, not just the original answer.
- Use homework help as a hint system. Ask for the next step or a comparable example before viewing a complete solution.
Limits to check
Feature availability and usage limits can vary by plan, institution, region, and account. Confirm the current controls before promising that a class can create or share a particular AI-generated format. Generated sets still require the same source check as any other AI output.

Which tool fits common college scenarios?
“I cannot understand the professor’s worked example.”
Start with ChatGPT Study Mode. Upload the example, ask it to question you about each step, and request a parallel problem. If the explanation conflicts with lecture notation, return to the course source and ask for a translation rather than accepting a new method.

“I have 80 pages of notes and need a quiz tonight.”
Use NotebookLM or Gemini Notebook with only the relevant unit. Generate a study guide, then a cited quiz, and inspect the source passage for every missed answer. Quizlet is a good alternative when you also want to keep the resulting set for repeated flashcard sessions.
“I need vocabulary cards for a language, biology, or law exam.”
Quizlet is the most direct choice when card creation, editing, and repeated review are the center of the task. Use NotebookLM or Gemini Notebook instead when each definition must remain tied to a particular reading or lecture.
“I want help with homework but cannot submit AI-written work.”
Use a tutor-style prompt: ask for a diagnostic question, one hint at a time, and a check of your own attempt. Keep your solution process, cite course sources where required, and follow the instructor’s stated policy. OpenAI specifically says Study Mode does not replace course requirements.

- Diagnose. Bring the missed concept to ChatGPT Study Mode and work through questions until you can explain the reasoning.
- Transfer. Generate a new problem or case that changes the numbers, context, or wording.
- Consolidate. Edit the final flashcards in Quizlet or your preferred review system. Delete cards that are unsupported, ambiguous, or testing trivia your instructor does not require.
- Review over time. Revisit difficult cards on separate days and keep a short error log. Re-reading an AI summary is not a substitute for retrieving the answer.
Accuracy, privacy, and academic-integrity safeguards
Check every consequential claim
AI can invent a citation, misread a scan, swap a sign in an equation, or state a plausible but unsupported interpretation. For medical, legal, laboratory, engineering, and quantitative work, verify calculations and definitions against the assigned source, instructor feedback, or an approved reference.
Keep the source boundary visible
Tell the tool whether it may use general knowledge or only the uploaded material. If a question cannot be answered from the source, the useful response is “not established in these documents,” followed by a request for an approved reference—not a confident guess.
Follow your course and campus rules
Policies differ by instructor and assessment. Some courses allow brainstorming but prohibit generated prose; others permit tutoring but require disclosure. Save your drafts and prompts when disclosure is required, and never upload restricted exam questions, protected student records, or confidential research without authorization.

Troubleshooting common failures
The generated cards contain wrong or missing facts
- Reduce the source set to one chapter or lecture.
- Replace blurry scans with text-based PDFs or clearer images.
- Ask for a citation or page reference for every answer.
- Edit or delete unsupported cards rather than trying to memorize them.
The tutor gives the answer immediately
- Explicitly request one question at a time and no final answer until you attempt it.
- Ask for a hint, prerequisite check, or analogous example.
- Paste your current work so the system can respond to the actual misconception.
A school account lacks a feature shown online
- Check whether you are signed into the institution-managed domain.
- Ask the campus administrator whether the education feature is enabled.
- Look for a regional rollout, age requirement, or plan limitation.
- Use an allowed alternative and export only material that your policy permits.
The output mixes courses or outdated material
- Create separate notebooks or sets for each course and assessment.
- Label revision dates on uploaded files.
- Remove superseded slides and tell the tool which document has priority.
Bottom line
Choose ChatGPT Study Mode for active, question-driven tutoring; choose NotebookLM or Gemini Notebook when traceability to your own notes matters most; choose Quizlet AI when you want the broadest combination of flashcards, practice tests, study guides, PDF summaries, and homework help. The strongest process uses source-grounded materials to create practice, a tutor to work through mistakes, and your own verified answers as the final authority.
