For a VCR, older DVD player, camcorder or retro console, the dependable solution is an active analog-to-HDMI converter with the same sockets as your source. A composite converter accepts yellow video and red/white audio; an S-Video-capable unit can preserve the cleaner signal from compatible players. If both the source and television offer component video, Y/PB/PR normally gives better picture quality than S-Video or composite, but it still needs separate stereo-audio leads. A passive RCA-to-HDMI cable cannot convert an analog signal into HDMI.

Start by identifying the source output and every input on the TV. New sets increasingly omit the analog jacks that older equipment expects, so the correct adapter depends on whether your device outputs composite, S-Video, component, SCART or RF, and whether your television accepts HDMI, analog video or a manufacturer-supplied AV dongle.

Why do old devices fail to connect directly to new TVs?

Legacy equipment usually sends an analog signal, while HDMI carries digital audio and video. Sony describes HDMI as transferring uncompressed high-definition digital video and audio; an HDMI-only television therefore cannot interpret a VCR’s analog output without an electronic conversion stage.

Televisions have also changed their physical inputs. LG’s support guidance published on August 14, 2025, notes that customers connecting an analog peripheral to a new digital television can face an incompatibility problem. Some current models retain one shared composite input through a small manufacturer-supplied AV dongle, but many provide HDMI only.

Do not confuse a cable with a converter. A cable only changes the plug format. An active converter contains electronics that digitize the incoming analog signal, process or scale it, and send the result through HDMI; it normally also requires USB or mains power.

Which adapter should I use for each legacy video output?

Choose the highest-quality output that both the source and the TV or converter support. The table shows the practical path for each common connector.

Source output What the signal carries Best connection to a modern TV Important detail
Composite RCA One combined video channel plus left/right analog audio Active composite-to-HDMI converter, or the TV’s composite input/AV dongle Yellow is video; red is right audio; white or black is left audio.
S-Video plus RCA audio Luminance and color separated into two video components, with audio on separate RCA plugs Active S-Video-to-HDMI converter that also accepts left/right audio Use S-Video when the player and converter both provide it; do not leave the audio leads disconnected.
Component Y/PB/PR Three analog video channels; no audio TV component input, if available, plus separate red/white stereo audio Green goes to Y, blue to PB and red to PR. The red video plug is not the same function as red audio.
SCART A region-dependent multi-pin analog connector that may carry composite, RGB and audio A SCART-specific active converter matched to the source’s signal mode SCART implementations and availability vary by area; a generic cable is not a universal HDMI solution.
RF/coaxial antenna output Modulated television-channel signal An RF demodulator or a converter designed specifically for the source’s RF standard RF is generally the least desirable path because it adds modulation and demodulation stages.

What is the best composite or S-Video adapter for a VCR, DVD player or console?

Use an active converter with the exact input your device provides and an HDMI output for the television. A useful specification example is StarTech’s VID2HDCON2 datasheet: it accepts S-Video or analog composite video with RCA left/right audio, supports NTSC and PAL sources, and outputs up to 720p. The listed applications include VCRs, DVD players, gaming consoles and camcorders.

An S-Video input is worthwhile when the source has that socket because it keeps luminance and color separate. If the source only has yellow composite, an S-Video jack on the converter cannot create detail that was never present; connect composite instead. Confirm that the converter’s output resolution is accepted by the TV and that its audio is embedded in the HDMI stream.

How do I connect a composite or S-Video source to HDMI?

  1. Read the labels on the source. Identify the video output (yellow composite or S-Video) and the red/white or red/black audio outputs.
  2. Connect the source’s OUT jacks to the converter’s matching IN jacks. For composite, yellow goes to video, red to right audio and white or black to left audio. For S-Video, insert the S-Video plug and still connect both audio leads.
  3. Connect a suitable HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the television. Do not connect the converter output to another output socket.
  4. Connect the converter’s power supply or USB power lead, then turn on the source device and the television.
  5. Select the HDMI input used by the converter. If the hardware has an NTSC/PAL switch or menu, choose the standard produced by the source; set the available output-resolution option to a mode the TV accepts.
  6. Play a known tape, disc or game. A stable picture and sound confirm that the signal path and input selection are correct.

When is component video a better choice?

Component can provide a cleaner picture than S-Video or composite when the source and TV both support it. It separates video into Y, PB and PR, but it carries no sound, so three video leads and a separate red/white stereo-audio pair are required.

How do I wire Y/PB/PR correctly?

  1. Connect the source’s green Y output to the TV’s green Y input.
  2. Connect blue PB to blue PB and red PR to red PR. These three plugs carry video only.
  3. Connect the source’s red and white audio outputs to the television’s matching right and left audio inputs. Panasonic specifies the green-to-Y, blue-to-PB and red-to-PR mapping; Sony likewise notes that component video does not carry audio.
  4. Select the TV’s component input and the corresponding audio input. If the television labels the audio jacks for a shared input, follow that label rather than assuming the HDMI audio path will work.

Many new televisions no longer include component sockets. In that case, use a component-to-HDMI converter that accepts the three video channels and separate stereo audio. Verify the converter’s supported resolution and regional standard before purchase; do not substitute a three-plug component cable for an active converter.

Can I plug the old RCA cables directly into my television?

Yes, but only when the television actually has a composite input or a manufacturer-supplied AV adapter. Connect yellow to the TV’s video jack, red to right audio and white or black to left audio, then select the matching AV or composite input.

Some sets combine the analog input into a proprietary 3.5-mm or multi-pin dongle. The dongle’s wiring is model-specific, so use the adapter supplied for that television rather than a visually similar cable. This direct route avoids an external converter, but it is unavailable when the TV offers HDMI only.

How should I handle SCART, RF and other unusual outputs?

SCART

SCART is common on equipment sold in parts of Europe and can carry different signal types depending on the device and its pin configuration. A converter must match the source mode, such as composite or RGB, and the regional video standard. Sony notes that SCART availability varies by area and recommends HDMI when the player itself provides HDMI. A passive SCART-to-HDMI lead cannot perform the required digitization.

RF/coaxial

Some VCRs and game systems provide only an RF output. That output is a television-channel signal rather than baseband video, so it needs an RF demodulator or a converter explicitly designed for the source’s RF system. If the device also has composite or S-Video, use that output instead for a simpler and cleaner signal path.

Proprietary or uncommon connectors

Check the device manual or the labels beside the socket before ordering. A connector’s shape does not guarantee its pinout or signal type; identify whether it carries composite, component, RGB, audio or RF and select hardware built for that exact signal.

Which converter specifications matter most?

Compare converters by signal compatibility rather than by the number of included plugs. The following checklist separates established requirements from features that vary by model.

  • Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
  • Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
  • Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
  • Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
  • HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.
Specification What to verify Why it matters
Input connector Composite, S-Video, component, SCART or RF as required A converter cannot accept a signal type its input circuitry does not support.
Video standard NTSC, PAL, or both Regional standards differ in frame timing and color encoding. A mismatch can produce a rolling, black-and-white or absent picture.
HDMI output Supported resolution and refresh rate; one documented example outputs up to 720p The TV must accept the converter’s selected mode. Scaling changes the signal format but does not restore lost source detail.
Audio handling RCA left/right inputs and HDMI audio embedding Component and S-Video video paths do not automatically include sound; audio must enter the converter separately.
Scaling controls Fixed output or selectable modes A selectable mode can help when a TV rejects one resolution, while a fixed mode may be simpler.
Latency Manufacturer-stated processing delay, if published Games are more sensitive to delay than prerecorded video. Independent latency figures are not established for the products described here, so treat “zero latency” marketing claims cautiously.
Power USB or mains requirement and included supply An unpowered adapter may not digitize or scale the signal at all.
Switches and controls NTSC/PAL selector, input selector and resolution button Accessible controls make troubleshooting easier when the source standard or TV compatibility is uncertain.

How do I choose an adapter for a specific device?

VCR

Use the VCR’s composite yellow/red/white output if that is all it provides. If the VCR has S-Video, choose a converter with S-Video input and RCA audio; this avoids combining the luminance and color signals before digitization. RF should be a last resort.

Older DVD player

Check for component outputs before settling for composite. Component may deliver the player’s best analog picture, but you must route the separate red/white audio pair. If the player has HDMI, connect it directly and bypass analog conversion.

Retro console

Composite-to-HDMI is the usual path for yellow/red/white consoles. For games, check the converter’s processing latency and test the controller response before installing it permanently. A converter that accepts NTSC and PAL is useful when consoles or displays come from different regions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camcorder

Camcorders often use a short breakout lead ending in composite or S-Video. Confirm which end is the camcorder’s output and connect the breakout’s yellow, red and white plugs to the converter’s inputs; do not assume a similarly shaped headphone or microphone socket carries video.

What picture-quality order should I expect?

When all equipment supports the connections, the practical order is HDMI from the source, then component, S-Video, composite and finally RF. This ranking describes signal separation and processing potential, not a promise that every recording will look better: a worn VHS tape remains limited by its original recording, and a low-quality source cannot be made high-definition by scaling.

Use the best output that is available on both ends without adding unnecessary adapters. A direct component connection to a surviving component input can be preferable to converting component to composite and then to HDMI. Conversely, if the TV has only HDMI, one properly matched active converter is simpler and usually safer than chaining several incompatible boxes.

  • Check direction: every source connection must leave an OUT jack and enter the converter or TV’s IN jack; the converter’s HDMI OUT goes to the TV’s HDMI IN.
  • Reseat each plug: push RCA, S-Video, component and HDMI connectors fully home. A loose yellow plug can remove video while loose red/white plugs remove only one audio channel.
  • Verify the selected input: choose the exact HDMI, AV or component input used, not merely the general TV source menu.
  • Confirm the video standard: set NTSC or PAL to match the source. An incorrect setting can cause no lock, unstable color or a rolling image.
  • Test a known-good cable and source: substitute one cable at a time and try another tape, disc or game to separate a damaged recording from an adapter fault.
  • Check power: active converters need their specified USB or mains supply. A powered HDMI socket alone may not power the converter.
  • Resolve audio separately: for component, confirm the red/white audio leads and the TV’s assigned audio input. For S-Video, remember that the S-Video plug carries no sound.
  • Try another output mode: if the converter offers more than one resolution, select a mode listed as compatible with the TV. A black screen after changing modes may require returning to the previous setting or power-cycling both devices.

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance similarly starts with reseating cables, confirming the selected input and testing known-good connections. If direct composite works but the converter does not, the fault is likely in the converter’s power, standard selection or input compatibility rather than the television panel.

What is the safest buying checklist?

  1. Write down the source device’s exact output sockets and the TV’s exact input sockets before shopping.
  2. Prefer direct HDMI from the source when available; otherwise choose component, S-Video, composite and then RF in that order.
  3. For HDMI-only televisions, select an active converter, not a passive cable or plug adapter.
  4. Match NTSC/PAL support to the source and verify the converter’s maximum output mode, such as the up-to-720p capability documented for StarTech’s VID2HDCON2.
  5. Confirm that all required audio inputs are present. Component needs separate stereo audio; S-Video needs RCA audio; composite combines video and audio leads in one cable set.
  6. For gaming, look for documented processing latency and test responsiveness during the return period. For tapes and discs, prioritize stable synchronization and correct standard detection.
  7. Check the power supply, included cables, input selector and warranty for the region where the equipment will be used.

There are no independent market-wide performance statistics in the manufacturer material available for these adapters, so published compatibility details are more useful than an unexplained “4K” label. A converter’s job is reliable analog capture, standard conversion and an HDMI signal your particular TV can lock onto.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an RCA-to-HDMI cable improve VHS picture quality?

No. A cable cannot digitize the analog signal, and an active converter can only scale and process the detail present on the tape. Cleaning the tape path, using the VCR’s best output and avoiding unnecessary signal conversions usually matter more than a higher output-resolution label.

Can one converter handle both NTSC and PAL tapes or consoles?

Only if its specifications explicitly list both standards. A dual-standard converter still needs the correct mode selected or automatic detection to be enabled, and the television must accept the resulting HDMI timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my component picture visible but the sound missing?

Component’s Y, PB and PR leads carry video only. Connect the source’s separate red and white audio outputs and select the TV audio input associated with the component input.

Is an HDMI upscaler necessary for a modern 4K television?

The television can upscale a compatible 720p or other HDMI signal itself, so an external 4K claim is not automatically beneficial. Choose a converter first for correct input support, NTSC/PAL handling and stable synchronization; scaling quality varies by model.
