For most people, the Seagate Expansion Portable 4TB is the best straightforward value: it is bus-powered, uses USB 3.0, works with common Windows, macOS and ChromeOS computers, and needs only drag-and-drop setup. Choose the Toshiba Canvio Flex 4TB instead if you need both USB-C and USB-A cables, exFAT compatibility, or direct use with supported phones and tablets. The Toshiba Canvio Advance 4TB is the better fit for Windows users who want password protection and automatic backup software. Canvio Basics is the simplest Windows-focused option, while WD My Passport remains a credible alternative when its current bundle and regional warranty are satisfactory.
This guide compares the five drives on connection, formatting, software, warranty, size and real-world suitability for backups and file storage. It also explains when a portable hard disk is fast enough, when an SSD is worth the extra cost, and how to build a backup that survives drive failure.
Which 4TB portable external hard drive should you buy?
The right choice depends less on the advertised capacity than on your computer’s port, the operating systems you use, and whether you need included security or backup software.

All five are traditional portable hard disk drives. Their USB interface ratings describe the connection ceiling, not a guaranteed sustained transfer speed. A computer with a slower port, a crowded USB bus, many small files or a nearly full disk can reduce throughput substantially.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why choose a portable HDD instead of a portable SSD?
A 4TB portable HDD generally provides more capacity for less money than a 4TB portable SSD, making it practical for photo libraries, video archives and a second backup copy. An SSD has no spinning platters, so it is faster for frequent access, application scratch work and moving many small files, and it tolerates movement better while operating.
For an HDD used mainly as a backup target or an archive that you open occasionally, the capacity-per-cost advantage usually matters more than peak speed. If you edit large video projects directly from the drive, run virtual machines, or repeatedly load a working library, an SSD’s responsiveness can justify its higher price. Keep the two technologies separate in your plan: an HDD is a cost-effective backup destination, while an SSD is a performance accessory.
What are the important differences between these five 4TB drives?
Connection and included cables
Canvio Flex is the only model in this group explicitly supplied with both USB-C and USB-A cables. That avoids buying an adapter when moving between a newer laptop and an older desktop. The other models use a conventional USB cable; check the connector at the drive end and your computer’s port before ordering, because “USB-C compatible” can otherwise mean an adapter is required.

Formatting and cross-device use
Canvio Flex ships exFAT, a practical choice when one drive must move between Windows and macOS without reformatting. Canvio Advance and Canvio Basics ship NTFS for Windows, and Toshiba states that macOS use requires reformatting. Reformatting erases the existing contents, so copy files elsewhere first.
Seagate lists compatibility with most Windows, macOS and ChromeOS systems, but compatibility does not mean every drive arrives with the ideal format for every workflow. A drive can be recognized by an operating system and still need a format change to enable native writing. Check the file-system requirement for your exact Mac, Chromebook or other host before loading irreplaceable data.
Backup and security software
Canvio Advance includes Windows auto-backup and password-protection software. WD My Passport’s cited announcement lists WD Discovery software and password protection. Those features can be useful if you want a guided backup schedule or a simple lock for stored files, but software support can vary by operating-system version.

Canvio Flex is the lightest of the models with a published 4TB weight at 210 g. Canvio Advance and Canvio Basics are each listed at 217.5 g. Seagate’s STKM4000400 is 257 g and measures 115.3 × 80.0 × 20.9 mm. These differences are noticeable in a travel bag but do not change the basic installation or capacity.
Warranty and regional terms
Warranty length is not universal. Seagate lists one year in the Americas, two years in EMEA and three years in APAC for the Expansion Portable. Toshiba lists three years for Canvio Flex and two years for Canvio Advance. Warranty coverage can depend on the country of purchase, proof of purchase and exclusions, so read the regional terms rather than relying on a retailer’s generic specification.
Is the Seagate Expansion Portable 4TB the best value?
It is the best default when you want a conventional portable HDD with minimal setup and broad stated computer compatibility. The drive is bus powered, so one USB connection supplies data and power, and the quoted dimensions and 257 g weight make it reasonably portable.
Its limitations are equally clear: the interface is USB 3.0 rather than the newer USB 3.2 label used by the Toshiba models, there is no cited password or automatic-backup bundle, and the listed warranty varies sharply by region. Pick it when those omissions are acceptable and your main job is copying, storing and restoring files.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Mobile-device support still depends on the phone or tablet supplying enough power and supporting external storage through its operating system. A compatible cable alone cannot overcome a device that does not expose USB storage or that limits power draw. Test with a noncritical folder before treating a phone as part of your only backup path.
Who should buy Canvio Advance 4TB?
Canvio Advance is aimed at Windows users who want more than an empty disk. Its included auto-backup and password-protection software can reduce the number of separate tools you need to configure. Toshiba lists a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface rate of up to 5 Gb/s, a 217.5 g 4TB weight and a two-year limited warranty.
The trade-off is the NTFS factory format. Toshiba says macOS requires reformatting, so it is not the convenient choice for a shared Mac-and-PC drive unless you are prepared to erase and reconfigure it. Confirm that the software supports your current Windows release before depending on it for scheduled backups.

Yes, if your priority is a straightforward Windows storage disk. It is USB bus powered, uses USB 3.2 Gen 1, weighs 217.5 g and arrives in NTFS for Windows. It avoids extra utilities and the decisions that come with them.
It is less suitable as a shared Mac-and-PC device because Toshiba states that macOS requires reformatting. The cited product information does not state a warranty length, so verify the current regional terms before purchase.
Should you consider WD My Passport 4TB?
WD My Passport is a credible alternative if its current retail package fits your needs. WD’s announcement lists 4TB capacity, USB 3.2 Gen 1, WD Discovery software and password protection. Those details make it comparable to a software-equipped backup drive rather than a bare archive disk.

How do you set up a 4TB portable hard drive safely?
- Check the host connection. Identify whether the computer has USB-C, USB-A or both. Use the supplied cable where possible; avoid unpowered hubs during the initial setup.
- Connect the drive directly. Wait for the operating system to mount it and assign a volume. If it does not appear, try another port and cable before formatting anything.
- Confirm the file system. In Windows, open Disk Management or File Explorer’s drive properties. In macOS, open Disk Utility and inspect the volume. Do not erase a disk that already contains files you need.
- Choose a format for the job. Keep exFAT for routine Windows-and-Mac exchange. Use NTFS for a Windows-only workflow. Reformatting destroys existing data, so make a temporary copy first.
- Create a clear folder structure. Separate folders for documents, photos, projects and computer-image backups. Consistent names and dates make restoration faster.
- Run a small test copy and restore. Copy a few files, safely eject the drive, reconnect it and open those files. A successful write is not proof that every cable, port or backup setting is reliable.
- Configure an automated backup. Use Windows File History or another trusted backup tool, macOS Time Machine where supported, or the vendor utility supplied with a model such as Canvio Advance. Set a schedule and review the destination after the first complete run.
- Safely eject before unplugging. Close files and use the operating system’s eject command. Removing a spinning HDD during a write can corrupt the file system.
How should you use a 4TB drive for real backups?
A single portable disk is not a complete backup strategy. If it is lost, damaged or fails, the original and the copy can disappear together. Keep at least one additional copy on a separate device or in a reputable online service, and store one copy away from the computer when possible.
Use versioned backups, not just a mirror
A drag-and-drop mirror is useful for an archive but can copy accidental deletions or encrypted files over the good version. Versioned software keeps earlier states so you can recover a file changed days ago. Decide how many historical versions you can afford in capacity before setting retention.
Protect the backup from ransomware and mistakes
Disconnect the portable disk when a backup is complete unless you need continuous access. Keeping it offline limits the damage from malware that can reach mounted drives. Password protection helps control access to the disk, but it is not a substitute for a second copy or for securely storing the password.
Verify that restoration works
Once a month, restore several files to a temporary folder and open them. For a full-computer backup, confirm that the recovery process can actually boot or restore to replacement hardware. A backup job that reports “complete” without a test restore can still leave you with unusable data.
What speed should you expect from a portable HDD?
USB 3.0 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 advertise a connection rate up to 5 Gb/s, but the hard disk mechanism is usually the limiting factor. Large sequential files can copy relatively efficiently; thousands of small documents, photos or application files take much longer because the heads must seek between locations.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Performance also falls when the source is slow, the drive is nearly full, the computer is indexing files, or several devices share the same USB controller. Treat published interface rates as compatibility information rather than a promise that your backup will sustain that number. For frequent editing, use an SSD as the working disk and reserve the 4TB HDD for backup and capacity.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
The drive is not detected
- Reconnect directly to the computer, then try a different USB port and the original cable.
- Check Disk Management on Windows or Disk Utility on macOS for an unmounted volume.
- Try another computer before initializing or formatting; initialization can make recovery harder.
- If the enclosure clicks repeatedly, disconnect it and seek professional data-recovery advice rather than repeatedly powering it on.
The drive is read-only on a Mac
NTFS volumes are commonly readable but not natively writable by macOS. Copy needed data elsewhere, then reformat as exFAT for cross-platform exchange or use a Mac-native format if the drive will stay with Macs. Reformatting erases the volume.
Copies are unexpectedly slow
- Copy one large test file to separate source, cable and drive speed from a folder containing many small files.
- Connect to a high-speed port without a hub and pause other heavy transfers.
- Leave free space on the disk and check for background indexing or backup jobs competing for the same device.
The backup software stops
Check that the destination remains mounted, the computer does not sleep during the first full run, and the drive has enough free space. Review the software’s error log and run a small manual copy. If the utility is incompatible with your operating-system version, use the operating system’s built-in backup feature instead of disabling protection entirely.
What should you check before ordering?
- Exact model number: Product names can cover several capacities and revisions. Confirm the 4TB model, connector and included cable.
- Regional warranty: Verify the country-specific period and return process. Seagate’s published term differs between the Americas, EMEA and APAC.
- Current listing: Check price, stock, software version and package contents immediately before purchase; these can change, especially for older announcements.
- Operating system: Decide whether you need exFAT for shared Windows-and-Mac use or NTFS for Windows-only storage.
- Power and travel: Bus-powered drives are convenient, but some phones, tablets and unpowered hubs may not supply enough power.
- Physical protection: None of the cited standard HDD pages promises drop or water protection. Use a padded case and eject the disk before moving it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 4TB drive actually provide 4TB of usable space?
No. Manufacturers label capacity in decimal units, while operating systems display a smaller binary-equivalent figure after formatting. The file system also reserves a small amount for its own structures, so the available number will be below the headline capacity.
Can I use one external drive with both Windows and a Mac without erasing it?
Use a volume formatted as exFAT for ordinary file exchange, provided both computers support it. If the drive is NTFS, macOS may read it but not write to it without additional software; reformat only after copying the contents elsewhere.
Is password protection the same as encrypted backup?
Not necessarily. A vendor password feature may protect access to the drive or its utility, while encryption protects the data itself if the disk is removed from its enclosure. Read the current software documentation and keep a separate recovery copy of important files.
Can I leave a portable HDD connected permanently?
You can, but an always-mounted backup is exposed to accidental deletion, malware and power events. For a safer routine, let scheduled software run, verify the backup, then eject or disconnect the drive when you do not need it.
