Is the BenQ X3100i worth it? It is a strong fit if you can place a standard-throw projector at the right distance, control room light, and want very low input lag at 1080p/240Hz. It is less compelling if your priority is gaming at 4K/120Hz, a bright image in a sunlit room, or the deepest blacks for movie nights. BenQ specifies 3,300 ANSI lumens and 4K UHD resolution; independent testing finds it colorful and bright in dim rooms, but not a substitute for a high-end dark-room cinema projector.
What kind of projector is the BenQ X3100i?
The X3100i is a 4LED, 4K UHD projector designed with gaming as a major priority, while also supporting HDR movies and streaming. BenQ’s US specification page lists a native 16:9 aspect ratio, 3840 × 2160 resolution, 3,300 ANSI lumens, a 1.15–1.50 throw ratio, 1.3× zoom and vertical lens shift from 40% to 60%. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of the brightness or contrast you will perceive in your room. BenQ X3100i specifications.
The main buying question is whether the projector’s installation and room requirements fit your setup—and whether you will use its faster gaming modes enough to justify choosing a premium projector. Its input-lag figures are tied to specific resolutions and refresh rates, and its 4K gaming ceiling is 60Hz, not 120Hz.

The 1.15–1.50 throw ratio and 1.3× zoom give some flexibility, but the X3100i is not a short-throw model. Measure the distance from the planned lens position to the screen and check the resulting image size before buying. Vertical lens shift can help adjust image position, but it does not remove the need to plan the projector’s location carefully.

How good is it for gaming?
The X3100i’s headline gaming advantage is low input lag in supported modes, particularly 1080p/240Hz. BenQ’s specification page lists the following figures; the refresh-rate condition matters as much as the lag number. BenQ specifications.
| Input mode | BenQ-listed input lag | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 3840 × 2160 at 60Hz | 16.7 ms | 4K gaming is supported up to 60Hz. |
| 1080p at 120Hz | 8.3 ms | A higher-refresh mode at Full HD resolution. |
| 1080p at 240Hz | 4.2 ms | The lowest listed lag, available at 1080p/240Hz—not at 4K. |
RTINGS’ review reports support for 4K/60Hz, 1080p/120Hz and 1080p/240Hz gaming. It also says 1440p at 60Hz and 120Hz is downscaled to 1080p, so a console or PC sending 1440p will not retain that resolution on this projector. RTINGS reviewed the X3100i on June 3, 2024, and modified the review on May 11, 2026, using Methodology v0.12; the tested unit was manufactured in September 2023. RTINGS BenQ X3100i review.

The projector uses HDMI 2.0b, not HDMI 2.1. Treat 4K/60Hz as the relevant 4K gaming limit: the X3100i does not provide 4K/120Hz gaming. If your main goal is high refresh rate, its appeal is specifically the lower-resolution 1080p modes.
BenQ lists HDMI compatibility with Switch, PS4/PS5 and Xbox. It also says a standard Nintendo Switch can connect directly by USB-C; that connection does not support Switch Lite. BenQ X3100i product page.

How does it look for movies and streaming?
RTINGS finds the X3100i bright and colorful in dim rooms, and says it can serve both gaming and movie viewing when brightness, vivid color and low lag are priorities. Its limitation is dark-scene performance: near-black detail and contrast are weaker than on the best home-theater projectors. RTINGS also finds it insufficiently bright for well-lit rooms. For a dedicated cinema room where black levels matter more than gaming speed, those trade-offs deserve particular weight. RTINGS review.
BenQ lists HDR10 and HLG compatibility. RTINGS reports that Dolby Vision is not supported, a relevant limitation for Xbox owners and viewers whose movie libraries rely on that format. HDR support does not, by itself, mean the projector supports every HDR format.

RTINGS says the included QS02 streaming dongle is a more capable package than the QS01 included with the X3000i, adding Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, native Netflix support and USB passthrough. Retail contents can vary by region, so check the local product listing to confirm the dongle is included. RTINGS also reports that the projector fails to pass through many lossy audio formats; buyers using an external audio system should check whether their particular sources and sound equipment will work as intended.

How does it compare with the X3000i and other projectors?
RTINGS calls the X3000i the closest predecessor and describes the X3100i as a slight but noticeable upgrade, with higher brightness peaks, better contrast, a wider color gamut and the QS02 streaming dongle. That is a reviewer’s comparison, not a guarantee that every owner will notice each difference in every room. RTINGS also identifies the X500i as a short-throw alternative and names the ViewSonic PX701-4K, Epson Home Cinema 3800 and Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2 as comparison context. RTINGS review.

There is no universal winner among these choices based on model names alone. Compare the exact version sold in your region and prioritize the features that affect your setup:
- Placement: throw distance, zoom range, lens shift and whether a short-throw design is necessary.
- Gaming: resolution supported at each refresh rate, HDMI capabilities and measured input lag in the mode you will actually use.
- Room and picture: usable brightness in your lighting conditions, contrast in dark scenes, color and HDR format support.
- Connections: streaming features, audio-format handling and included accessories in the local retail package.
- Total cost: current regional price plus any screen or mounting hardware your installation requires.
How long does the LED light source last?
BenQ lists 20,000 hours in Normal mode and 30,000 hours in Eco or SmartEco mode. These are manufacturer-rated light-source figures for the named modes, not a promise that every projector component will last that long. BenQ’s FAQ says, “There is no need to replace it during the normal usage lifetime of the projector.” It also clarifies that LED replacement is not user-serviceable and directs owners to a service center. Quick Recap
What should you check before buying?
- Measure the throw distance. Confirm the proposed lens-to-screen distance and image dimensions against the 1.15–1.50 throw ratio; use BenQ’s planner if useful.
- Decide which gaming mode matters. If you need 4K/120Hz, this is not the right match. If 1080p/240Hz and low lag matter more, the X3100i’s strongest gaming mode is relevant.
- Assess your lighting and movie priorities. Plan to control light for the best picture, and consider whether near-black contrast is important enough to favor a cinema-focused model.
- Check format, audio and box contents. Confirm Dolby Vision is not required, verify your audio setup against the reported format limitation, and check the regional listing for the QS02 dongle.
- Verify the current regional price. Prices and retail packages change. TechRadar listed $2,799 / £2,099 on a guide updated September 17, 2026; that is a dated listing, not a guaranteed current offer. TechRadar projector guide.
Who should buy the BenQ X3100i?
It makes sense if
- You can accommodate a standard-throw installation and want a large 4K image for gaming and entertainment.
- You can dim the room and value vivid color alongside gaming responsiveness.
- You expect to use 1080p/120Hz or 1080p/240Hz modes and understand their resolution trade-off.
Look elsewhere if
- You need 4K/120Hz, Dolby Vision, or a bright image with lights on.
- Your movie priority is the strongest possible black levels and near-dark-scene contrast.
- Your space requires a short-throw projector or you cannot position the unit within its throw range.
