Lowering brightness directly reduces the screen setting, while Battery Saver can also limit background activity and, on some phones, other power-using features. If your screen is brighter than you need, dim it; turn on Battery Saver as well when you need extra runtime and can accept its restrictions.
How the two settings save power
Lowering screen brightness
Brightness reduction targets the display: it makes the screen less bright. Google recommends reducing screen brightness to help a charge last longer, but its guidance does not give a universal percentage or runtime gain. The benefit depends on the phone, its display, your starting brightness, and how you use it. Google’s Android battery guidance and Pixel battery guidance both list brightness reduction as a battery-saving measure.
For a practical adjustment, lower brightness to the dimmest level that remains comfortable and legible in your current surroundings. Visibility and comfort are the trade-off; there is no need to make the screen difficult to read.
Battery Saver
Battery Saver works more broadly than the brightness slider. Android guidance says it limits or turns off background activity, and warns that some features, connections, and apps may be delayed. The exact behavior depends on the device. Google’s Android instructions describe these effects but do not quantify how much power Battery Saver saves compared with dimming the display.

Which should you use?

Start with brightness if it is unnecessarily high. If you still need more runtime, enable Battery Saver and consider whether delayed background activity or other device-specific restrictions will interfere with what you need to do.
Why results vary by phone and what you are doing
Battery life varies by device, and Android’s general help directs users to their manufacturer’s guidance. Even features within the same operating system can behave differently across models.

For example, on supported Pixel models, Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. Google says Smooth Display increases battery usage, but that Pixel-specific behavior should not be assumed for every Android phone. Google’s Pixel display help describes availability and behavior by model.
What you do with the phone matters too. Google identifies long navigation sessions, video, graphics-heavy games, tethering, prolonged GPS use, and streaming as activities that can drain a Pixel battery quickly. These are workload considerations, not evidence that one of the two settings always saves more. Google’s advice for stretching a low Pixel battery covers these activities.

What is known about the head-to-head comparison
The official guidance cited here supports both measures, but it does not provide a controlled comparison, power-draw measurements, or a universal estimate of how much longer either setting makes a phone last. A precise claim such as a percentage saved or a number of extra hours would therefore depend on a particular phone and test conditions, not a general Android-wide result.
