Barclays plans to eliminate about 5,000 full-time positions by the end of 2026, equal to roughly 5% of its global workforce. The bank presents the move as part of a wider efficiency program built on technology investment, platform modernization, simpler processes and increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI)—not as evidence that an AI system is directly replacing 5,000 people.

Did Barclays cut 5,000 jobs because of AI?

Barclays’ reported description of the plan is “organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI.” That wording links AI to the efficiency effort while leaving room for savings from process redesign, systems consolidation and other cost controls.

Which Barclays roles are affected by the AI-linked cuts?
Roughly 60% of the planned reductions are in support functions. Barclays specifically included developer roles in that category, indicating that technology and internal-service teams are part of the restructuring rather than being insulated from it.
The available announcement does not provide a complete country-by-country or business-unit list. Reports say the reductions are global and that the bulk is expected in the UK, but they do not establish how many positions will come from each location, division or job family. How much money will Barclays save from the job cuts?
Chief financial officer Anna Cross tied the workforce actions to more than £1.1 billion of planned savings for 2027. That is a forward-looking savings target for the broader efficiency program, not a separately disclosed amount attributable only to the 5,000 roles.
