The Banana Pi BPI-CanMV-K230D-Zero—also called the CanMV K230D Zero—is a compact embedded development board built around Canaan’s Kendryte K230D RISC-V processor. Its integrated KPU is designed for local AI inference, but the board’s 128MB of RAM is a substantial constraint: it is aimed at focused embedded and AIoT projects, not desktop use or unrestricted AI workloads.

What the BPI-K230D Zero is designed to do

Banana Pi positions the board for DIY projects, AIoT devices, embedded systems, programming education, AI audio/video projects, and performance evaluation. It combines a dual-core RISC-V CPU with an integrated third-generation KPU, camera inputs, display output, wireless connectivity, GPIO, and TF-card expansion. Those features make it a candidate for compact projects that process sensor, audio, or camera data locally.

Local inference is a supported use case in the general sense: Banana Pi says the KPU supports AI inference. That does not establish that a particular model, framework, camera, or software workflow will work without additional setup.

BPI-K230D Zero specifications

The following figures are specifications published on Banana Pi’s K230D Zero product page. They are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. The page’s hardware table is oddly headed “HardWare Specification of Banana Pi BPI-M7,” apparently a labeling or copy error; confirm the board revision and documentation before relying on a critical build detail.

Banana Pi does not provide a benchmark setup alongside the listed AI frame rates: input resolution, model versions, software versions, and test conditions are not stated. Treat them as vendor-reported examples, not guaranteed application performance or results directly comparable with benchmarks of other boards.

What 128MB of RAM means for an AI project

The memory figure is central to deciding whether this board fits a project. A KPU can accelerate supported inference operations, but it does not remove the need to fit the model, runtime, operating environment, and application data within available memory. With 128MB listed, the board is best evaluated for a specific, constrained task rather than assumed to handle arbitrary neural networks or a full-featured software stack.

  • Start with the model and runtime requirements, including memory used outside the model itself.
  • Check that the intended software supports the K230D’s accelerator and the model format you plan to use.
  • Confirm camera or display compatibility at the connector and software levels; a listed MIPI interface alone does not prove a particular module will work.
  • Allow for storage separately: the TF-card slot expands storage, but it does not increase the listed 128MB of RAM.

Interfaces for cameras, displays, and peripherals

The combination of two MIPI-CSI inputs, MIPI DSI, USB OTG, onboard Wi-Fi, microphone, and 40-pin GPIO gives the board several routes to connect project hardware. The CSI listing distinguishes a 2-lane and a 4-lane input, while the DSI output is listed up to 1080p. GPIO functions include common serial buses and signal options, including I2C, UART, I2S, SPI, PWM, ADC, and JTAG.

These interface names are not a compatibility guarantee. The product listing does not identify validated camera-module SKUs, display panels, pinouts, or peripheral combinations. Check the board’s revision-specific documentation and module electrical and connector details before purchasing components for a build.

Software support and setup details to verify

Banana Pi’s product page links to dedicated online documentation, but the available product information does not establish a supported operating system, CanMV or MicroPython version, tested framework, model-conversion procedure, or complete peripheral compatibility matrix. Do not assume that the presence of the CanMV name or KPU means a particular development workflow is ready to use.

For a practical initial setup, verify the documentation and package contents for the exact board revision. The manufacturer lists TF-card expansion and USB Type-C 5V/2A power, but does not say that a card or power supply is included with every sale. It also does not identify an exact compatible accessory model.
