If you want a game that most closely evokes Kane Pixels’ lonely VHS-camera expeditions, start with The Complex: Expedition. For a group, choose Escape the Backrooms for up to four players or Backrooms: Escape Together for up to six. If you want eerie spaces without monster chases, try POOLS. These are games selected for similar moods and mechanics—not official adaptations of the series.

Which Backrooms game is closest to Kane Pixels’ found-footage style?

The Complex: Expedition is the strongest fit if you want to explore alone through a VHS-camera perspective. Its store description centers on an expedition gone wrong, slow-building tension, exploration, shifting entry points, and multiple endings.

The Complex: Expedition: best solo match

This is the most direct pick for someone drawn to the visual language of Kane Pixels’ videos: an isolated explorer, a camera-mediated view, and an unsettling environment that rewards moving slowly. The developer describes it as a “slow-burning, atmospheric horror experience focused on exploration and tension.” That is a description of its intended experience, not evidence that it reproduces the series scene for scene.

The game is a standalone work by pgWave, not an authorized Kane Pixels adaptation. Steam lists its full release as July 18, 2025, following Early Access beginning July 17, 2023. Those dates help distinguish its current release from its earlier development period; they do not imply a connection to the series. See The Complex: Expedition on Steam.

The Complex: Found Footage: a separate, quieter option

The Complex: Found Footage is another pgWave game, but it is not an alternate title for Expedition. Steam lists it as a single-player walking simulator, released August 18, 2022. Pick it when solitary wandering and mysterious atmosphere matter more than a co-op campaign or a more developed expedition premise.

There is also a different game called The Backrooms: Found Footage by BaddWeather. The shared phrase in the titles makes it easy to mix them up: check the full name and developer when searching or recommending one. The Complex: Found Footage’s listing presents a purchase option, so it should not be described as free; the listed price can vary by region.

Which Backrooms games are best for playing with friends?

For a four-person group, Escape the Backrooms offers the clearest fit: it supports one to four players, advertises more than 30 levels, and includes hostile entities and proximity voice chat. For a group of five or six, Backrooms: Escape Together advertises support for up to six players and changing, procedurally generated layouts.

Escape the Backrooms: broad level-spanning co-op

This is the most straightforward recommendation for friends who want to move through a sequence of Backrooms environments together, communicate nearby, and contend with hostile entities. Secret Mode’s Steam listing advertises 30+ unique levels and a one-to-four-player range. Treat those as publisher-stated game features, not an independent count of content or a promise about how long a session takes.

The game officially left Early Access on October 23, 2025. That makes it the full-release option among the two larger co-op choices discussed here, while its basic appeal remains group exploration rather than a solitary found-footage simulation. Check the Escape the Backrooms listing.

Backrooms: Escape Together: more players and changing layouts

Choose this one if your group has up to six people or prefers runs in environments whose layouts and encounters can change. Triiodide Studios’ Steam listing advertises 11 procedurally generated levels and proximity voice chat. The game remains labeled Early Access, so its current status is more informative than older aspirational development goals: do not treat those past goals as confirmed features or a release timetable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its larger advertised group limit is useful when your party exceeds four, but the Early Access label is a meaningful trade-off if you want a finished release. The procedural-layout description also makes it a different choice from a fixed, authored story: variability is part of the attraction. Check Backrooms: Escape Together on Steam.

Inside the Backrooms: co-op with puzzles at the center

Inside the Backrooms is the pick for friends who want to solve puzzles and manage items while avoiding entities, rather than simply explore a large catalog of levels. Its official description emphasizes puzzles, inventory items, entity avoidance, and proximity chat. The Steam page still labels it Early Access, so players looking for a completed full release should account for that status.

Its group size is up to four, making it a fit for a smaller party rather than the largest group considered here. The listing does not establish a current confirmed release timetable; older estimated development dates should not be read as a present-day plan. See its Steam listing.

Which games create dread without relying on monster chases?

POOLS is the clearest choice if you want liminal spaces, sound, and disorientation rather than enemies pursuing you. Its developer says no monsters chase or jump at the player, but also warns that the rooms can feel oppressive; it is unsettling exploration, not a promise of a stress-free experience.

POOLS: sound-led exploration of poolrooms

The developer describes POOLS as a walking simulator with no dialogue and no typical story. Its Steam listing says the base game contains six chapters and estimates 10–30 minutes per chapter. Those durations are the developer’s estimates, not measured play-session results, and should not be treated as a guaranteed total completion time.

POOLS is partly inspired by Kane Pixels’ found footage, but that influence does not make it an adaptation. It is a fit for people who want to be unsettled by space, sound, and navigation rather than by a monster chase. The Steam listing includes a demo if you want to preview the game before buying.

Optional OpenXR VR is officially supported only on Windows. Standard gamepads are supported according to the listing, but VR is not a requirement for ordinary play. Check the current store listing for the system and VR requirements before choosing a headset or operating system: POOLS on Steam.

Anemoiapolis: Chapter 1: explore and interact

Anemoiapolis: Chapter 1 is a solo Backrooms-inspired alternative for players who want to do more than walk through an uncanny space. Its description features familiar-but-surreal architecture, swimming, climbing, moving obstacles, and environmental puzzles. That interaction makes it a natural pick if you enjoy navigating and manipulating an environment as part of the unease.

Call it Backrooms-inspired, not Kane Pixels canon. Its appeal is the combination of ordinary-looking spaces made strange and environmental activity, rather than a claimed connection to the series. See Anemoiapolis: Chapter 1 on Steam.

Is The Backrooms: Found Footage a different game from The Complex: Found Footage?

Yes. The Backrooms: Found Footage is BaddWeather’s separate single-player game, and its emphasis is survival with entities rather than the quieter walking-simulator framing of The Complex: Found Footage.

The Backrooms: Found Footage is described as roguelite-leaning and includes a Purist mode for a different kind of exploration. The developer’s setting description refers to 600 million square miles, but that is not a measured playable map size. Do not use it as a practical estimate of how much explorable terrain the game contains. The title’s similarity to The Complex: Found Footage is a naming overlap, not a shared game identity.

How should you choose between these Backrooms games?

Start with the kind of tension you want, then check whether you need solo play, a particular party size, or a completed release. “Backrooms game” covers very different experiences here: VHS-style solo exploration, puzzle co-op, survival, and sound-led liminal wandering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a solo VHS-camera expedition: choose The Complex: Expedition.
  • For solo atmospheric wandering: choose The Complex: Found Footage.
  • For a group of up to four and many advertised levels: choose Escape the Backrooms.
  • For a group of five or six, and layouts that change: consider Backrooms: Escape Together, with its Early Access status in mind.
  • For co-op puzzles and entity avoidance: consider Inside the Backrooms, also labeled Early Access.
  • For poolroom unease without monster pursuit: choose POOLS.
  • For interactive uncanny architecture: choose Anemoiapolis: Chapter 1.
  • For survival-oriented solo play: consider The Backrooms: Found Footage.

For a group, proximity voice chat is advertised by Escape the Backrooms, Backrooms: Escape Together, and Inside the Backrooms. A microphone can make nearby communication more practical, but the listings do not make any particular headset a requirement. If you are choosing for a player who dislikes pursuit, POOLS is the clearest contrast; if the preference is instead for a larger number of co-op levels and hostile entities, Escape the Backrooms is closer to that brief.

Exploration, puzzles, or survival?

The games differ most in what they ask you to do moment by moment. The Complex: Expedition and The Complex: Found Footage put atmosphere and observation first. Their appeal is noticing architecture, listening for changes, and deciding how far to push into an unfamiliar space. They are the closest options here to the fixed-camera, found-footage mood that brought many viewers to the genre.

Escape the Backrooms adds a much broader progression structure: its advertised 30-plus levels and hostile entities make it suitable for a group that wants repeated objectives and escalation. Backrooms: Escape Together instead emphasizes replay variation through 11 procedurally generated levels and changing encounters. Inside the Backrooms gives co-op a more traditional puzzle loop, with inventory items and entity avoidance sharing attention with navigation.

POOLS removes the conventional chase loop almost entirely. There is no dialogue or typical story, and the developer’s six-chapter structure and estimated 10–30-minute chapters make it easier to approach as a series of concentrated mood pieces. Anemoiapolis: Chapter 1 sits between walking simulator and environmental puzzle game, using swimming, climbing, moving obstacles, and interactive spaces to make the architecture itself the challenge. The Backrooms: Found Footage is the outlier for players who want survival pressure, entities, and a roguelite-leaning structure, including its Purist mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do the player counts mean for planning a session?

“Supports co-op” is not enough information when you are assembling a group. Escape the Backrooms and Inside the Backrooms cap a session at four players, while Backrooms: Escape Together advertises up to six. The one-to-four range for Escape the Backrooms also means it can be played alone, but its design emphasis is still cooperative progression and nearby communication. A five- or six-person group should not buy a four-player title expecting an extra-player workaround.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

All three co-op listings advertise proximity voice chat. That means communication is part of the intended play pattern, especially when players separate or need to warn one another about an entity. A PC gaming headset with a microphone is a convenient optional accessory, not a stated hardware requirement. Before purchasing, verify the current listing’s player limit and multiplayer details, because storefront information and Early Access features can change.

Release status, demos, and hardware caveats

Release labels are an important part of the comparison. Escape the Backrooms officially left Early Access on October 23, 2025. Backrooms: Escape Together and Inside the Backrooms remain labeled Early Access in their listings. That does not by itself determine quality, but it does mean features, content, and schedules should be treated differently from a finished release. Do not repeat old estimated timetables as promises.

POOLS lists a demo, which is the only explicit try-before-buy option in this group. Its developer estimates six base-game chapters at 10–30 minutes each, but the estimate is not an independent completion-time measurement and the demo’s content is not established as identical to the full game. The other listings present purchase options or regional pricing rather than a stated free plan. Steam prices and discounts can change by currency and location, so check the store page at checkout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ordinary PC play does not require virtual reality for any recommendation here. POOLS offers optional OpenXR VR, but its requirements state that only Windows is officially supported for VR. Standard gamepads are supported. If you are considering an OpenXR-compatible PC VR headset, confirm Windows compatibility and the current requirements; do not assume that a headset supported by another VR title will be supported here.

Common mistakes when searching for a Kane Pixels-style game

  • Assuming similar visuals mean an official tie-in: The Complex: Expedition and POOLS draw on a related found-footage or liminal aesthetic, but neither is presented as an authorized Kane Pixels game.
  • Combining similarly named titles: The Complex: Found Footage is pgWave’s 2022 single-player walking simulator. The Backrooms: Found Footage is BaddWeather’s separate survival game. Include the full title and developer when sharing a link.
  • Calling a listing free: A purchase option is not evidence of a free-to-play plan. Regional currencies and discounts vary.
  • Reading a setting number as map size: The 600-million-square-mile figure associated with The Backrooms: Found Footage is a setting description, not a measured playable area.
  • Ignoring Early Access: Backrooms: Escape Together and Inside the Backrooms are still labeled Early Access, so avoid presenting older planned features or dates as guaranteed.
  • Assuming cross-platform multiplayer: The cited store descriptions give player limits and voice-chat information, but they do not establish cross-platform play. Confirm platform support before inviting a mixed-platform group.

How were these games selected?

The recommendations are ranked by how well each game serves a distinct reason someone might search for a Backrooms game after Kane Pixels’ series: solo found-footage atmosphere, group play and party size, puzzle-solving, variable layouts, survival, or liminal exploration without monster pursuit. The comparisons use the games’ official store descriptions, listed player limits, advertised level counts, stated release or Early Access status, and the developer’s descriptions of mechanics. Similar mood or visual influence is not treated as proof of official affiliation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play POOLS with a gamepad?

Yes. The developer’s Steam listing says standard gamepads are supported. That is separate from its optional VR mode, which has a Windows-only official support statement.

Can I try POOLS before buying it?

A demo is listed on the POOLS Steam page. The listing does not establish that the demo has the same chapter content or duration as the full game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do these games support cross-platform multiplayer?

The cited Steam descriptions establish player limits and, for some games, proximity voice chat, but they do not establish cross-platform play. Check the current listing and platform-specific multiplayer details before organizing a mixed-platform group.

Which Backrooms game supports six players?

Backrooms: Escape Together advertises up to six players. Escape the Backrooms and Inside the Backrooms advertise up to four.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which option avoids monster chases?

POOLS is the clearest choice. Its developer says there are no monsters chasing or jumping at the player, while also warning that the rooms can feel oppressive.

Is Escape the Backrooms finished?

Its Steam listing records a full release on October 23, 2025. By contrast, Backrooms: Escape Together and Inside the Backrooms remain labeled Early Access.

Does POOLS require VR?

No. VR is optional. The listing supports ordinary play with standard gamepads and says only Windows is officially supported for its OpenXR VR mode.

How long is POOLS?

The developer describes six base-game chapters and estimates 10–30 minutes per chapter. That is a developer estimate, not a guaranteed total completion time or an independent measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick The Complex: Expedition for the nearest solo VHS expedition, Escape the Backrooms for a finished-feeling four-player journey, Backrooms: Escape Together for up to six and changing layouts, Inside the Backrooms for puzzle-heavy co-op, POOLS for oppressive poolroom atmosphere without monster pursuit, Anemoiapolis for interactive uncanny architecture, and The Backrooms: Found Footage for entity-focused survival.
