Use layered encryption rather than a single AES setting. Encrypt sensitive document payloads in the application with an envelope design (a data-encryption key, or DEK, wrapped by a key-encryption key, or KEK), then use Azure Databricks and Snowflake customer-managed-key controls for the platform data they actually cover. Azure Key Vault can hold or wrap keys, but its documented symmetric AES operations are currently a public-preview capability, and the available evidence does not prove that every Snowflake account can use an Azure Key Vault key directly. Treat the design as a data-flow and key-boundary problem: identify every copy of a document, assign the right control to each copy, and plan identity, rotation, recovery and revocation before production.
What should an enterprise encryption architecture protect first?
Start with an inventory of where a document exists, not with a product checkbox. A file uploaded by a customer may be copied into object storage, loaded into a staging table, parsed into plaintext, split into chunks, embedded into a vector index, displayed in a notebook, included in a model prompt, written to a query result, and retained in backups or logs. Each representation has a different owner and exposure.
For every location, decide whether you need provider-managed encryption at rest, a customer-controlled key, application or client-side encryption, or more than one layer. Azure’s encryption model distinguishes server-side encryption from client-side encryption: in the latter, the application encrypts before the cloud service receives the data, and the service does not possess the decryption keys. That distinction determines who can read a document if a service administrator, workspace, or downstream integration is compromised.
- Original and staged files: choose client-side encryption when the storage service must never receive plaintext, and add storage-level encryption for a second boundary.
- Parsed text and chunks: decide whether the processing job may decrypt them in memory; at-rest controls do not hide plaintext while code is running.
- Embeddings and indexes: assess whether vectors, metadata or row-level filters can reveal sensitive content even when the source file is encrypted.
- Notebook outputs, SQL history, prompts and responses: treat these as separate persistence points with their own retention and access policies.
- Backups and exports: verify that the same key policy and deletion process applies outside the primary workspace.
This map prevents a common error: assuming a workspace key automatically protects data copied to an external bucket, a vector service, or a model endpoint.

How does envelope encryption protect document payloads?
Envelope encryption separates fast bulk encryption from highly controlled key protection. Generate a DEK for a document or defined data unit, encrypt the content locally with an authenticated encryption library, and wrap that DEK with a KEK held in a key-management service. Store the ciphertext and wrapped DEK together with non-secret metadata such as the algorithm, format version, key identifier and key version.
Why use a local DEK?
Azure’s general encryption guidance describes AES-256 DEKs protected by a KEK and notes that local DEKs are more efficient than contacting Key Vault for every data operation. The application can encrypt a large file with the DEK, while Key Vault is called for the comparatively small wrap and unwrap operation. This reduces latency and avoids turning a vault into the bulk data plane.
What must the encrypted envelope contain?
- A ciphertext stream or object produced by a vetted, authenticated-encryption implementation.
- The wrapped DEK, never the plaintext DEK.
- A key reference and version so a rotation process can locate the correct KEK.
- Algorithm and format identifiers, nonce or initialization-vector data as required by the chosen format, and authenticated metadata.
- Integrity-protected document identifiers and version fields so an attacker cannot substitute metadata or replay an older envelope.
The exact mode, nonce rules, chunking format and document granularity require an implementation design and test plan. The available platform documentation does not provide a ready-made end-to-end Snowflake or Databricks document-encryption recipe. Keep keys, DEKs, vault responses and plaintext out of source code, notebooks, logs, exception messages and model prompts.
Can Azure Key Vault itself be the AES data-encryption service?
Do not assume so. Microsoft’s key documentation says symmetric oct-HSM/AES support in Azure Key Vault Premium is in public preview, with 128-bit, 192-bit and 256-bit AES keys and AES-KW, AES-GCM and AES-CBC operations. Microsoft also states that preview features are provided as-is and are not recommended for production workloads.

The same documentation describes service-side AES encrypt and decrypt as single-block operations and notes that local operations can be more performant. In practice, use a validated local data-plane encryption library for document-sized payloads and use Key Vault as the root-key or key-wrapping control when that fits your requirements. Confirm the current service status, regional availability, HSM requirements, throughput limits and support commitments before making the preview AES feature a production dependency.
What does Azure Databricks customer-managed-key encryption cover?
Azure Databricks separates customer-managed-key (CMK) features into three scopes: managed disks, managed services and DBFS root. Select a scope only after identifying where the object is stored and which plane administers it.
| Databricks scope | Typical boundary | What it does not imply |
|---|---|---|
| Managed disks | Encryption for supported disks used by compute resources. | It does not automatically encrypt external storage or every value processed in cluster memory. |
| Managed services | Documented control-plane data, including notebook source and results, secret-manager API data and SQL query history among the listed objects. | It is not a universal field-level or document-payload control across all jobs, indexes and downstream services. |
| DBFS root | Workspace DBFS root and related storage covered by the applicable configuration. | It does not extend automatically to arbitrary buckets, mounted locations or exported files. |
These are at-rest controls. They do not claim to encrypt data in transit or plaintext held in process memory while a notebook, SQL warehouse or model-serving job operates. Review the applicable plan, cloud region and configuration guide before enabling a scope; eligibility and setup differ by feature.
How do Databricks CMK changes affect existing data?
Databricks states that a managed-services key protects future writes and does not re-encrypt existing data. A migration therefore needs a deliberate rewrite or export-and-reimport plan for older objects, with retention and rollback controls. Revoking or deleting a key can cause reads and writes to fail after cached key material expires, so test the recovery path before any revocation exercise.

How does Snowflake encryption differ from Azure Key Vault encryption?
Snowflake documents that customer data is encrypted by default and that Snowflake manages data-encryption keys. Its Tri-Secret Secure model combines Snowflake-maintained keys with a customer-managed key supplied through the cloud platform hosting the Snowflake account. The supported customer-key provider and configuration depend on that hosting cloud and account edition.
The available Snowflake documentation does not establish that an arbitrary Snowflake account can accept an Azure Key Vault key directly. Verify the account’s cloud, region, edition and current Snowflake key-management documentation with the account administrator before promising such an integration. If direct compatibility is unavailable, keep application envelope encryption as the payload boundary and use Snowflake’s documented native controls for data stored inside Snowflake.
Which encryption layer should protect each representation?
Service-managed encryption, platform CMK and application encryption solve different problems. Compare them by boundary, decrypting identity and operational consequences rather than by the AES label alone.

How can a team implement the layered design safely?
- Classify the documents. Define which files, fields and derived artifacts are sensitive, the retention period, legal region and approved processing locations.
- Draw the data-flow map. Include upload endpoints, staging storage, parsers, chunk stores, embedding jobs, vector indexes, notebooks, SQL history, prompts, responses, logs, backups and exports.
- Choose the payload boundary. Decide whether the receiving service may ever see plaintext. If not, encrypt before upload and define where a trusted decrypt-and-process step runs.
- Define the envelope format. Select an authenticated-encryption library, DEK scope, nonce policy, chunk size, metadata authentication and versioning scheme. Document how corrupted or partially uploaded envelopes are detected.
- Provision the KEK boundary. Create a dedicated vault or key domain, separate key administrators from processing identities, and grant only the wrap, unwrap or get operations required. Prefer managed workload identities instead of embedded credentials where supported.
- Configure native platform controls. For Databricks, select managed-disk, managed-services or DBFS-root CMK according to the object inventory. For Snowflake, follow the account’s documented customer-key model and confirm hosting-cloud compatibility.
- Control network and access paths. Isolate vault endpoints, restrict private connectivity and storage access, apply least privilege to jobs and notebooks, and prevent secrets from appearing in shared command contexts.
- Test plaintext exposure. Inspect notebook outputs, SQL results, query history, logs, model traces and temporary files. Verify that sensitive values are not copied into an unencrypted diagnostic channel.
- Exercise lifecycle events. Test key-version rotation, DEK rewrapping, backup restoration, a disabled key, a revoked key and a failed vault call. Record the exact recovery owner and time objective for each event.
- Measure and review. Audit key usage, unwrap requests, unusual access, failed decryptions and policy changes. Revisit the map whenever a new model, vector store, connector or export is added.
What identity and secret controls are required?
Use separate identities for vault administration, platform configuration and document processing. A job that only unwraps DEKs should not be able to create or delete keys. Managed identities reduce credential storage, while granular access policies and network isolation limit the blast radius of a compromised notebook or connector.
Databricks secret redaction is useful but not a complete boundary. The service warns that transformations can defeat literal-value redaction, so a secret that is concatenated, encoded, reformatted or emitted through a different command may still appear. Restrict run permissions, isolate shared contexts, prohibit secrets in prompts and logs, and audit both secret reads and downstream output.
What failures should the design anticipate?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery action |
|---|---|---|
| New writes fail after a key change | The configured CMK is disabled, inaccessible or missing required permissions. | Restore authorized access or switch according to a tested emergency procedure; do not delete key material while investigating. |
| Old Databricks objects remain under an earlier key | Managed-services CMK applies to future writes only. | Run a controlled rewrite or migration and verify retention before retiring the old key. |
| Decrypt operations work intermittently | Cached key material expired, vault connectivity is unstable or identity tokens are failing. | Check vault health, token issuance, private-network routes and retry limits; document a bounded cache policy. |
| Plaintext appears in an AI trace | A parser, notebook, SQL result, prompt or logger copied data outside the envelope. | Remove the output, tighten permissions and retention, then add automated redaction and trace tests. |
| Snowflake integration cannot find the proposed key | The account’s hosting cloud or edition does not support the assumed provider path. | Verify account-specific Snowflake documentation and retain application-level encryption where necessary. |
How should rotation, migration and revocation be designed?
Rotation has two separate jobs: changing the KEK that wraps DEKs and changing the DEKs that encrypt payloads. Rewrapping DEKs can avoid rewriting large documents, provided the envelope format records key versions and the old KEK remains available long enough to complete the operation. A policy that requires fresh DEKs or new authenticated ciphertext must schedule a data migration instead.
Recommended Free Tools
For Databricks native CMK, plan for the fact that enabling a new key does not retroactively encrypt existing managed-service objects. Keep old key versions recoverable until migration and backup validation finish. Revocation is an availability event as well as a security action: model which reads, writes, jobs and dashboards will fail when cached key material expires, and obtain an approved restoration path.

Is this approach suitable for AI retrieval and inference?
It is suitable when the organization defines a trusted decryption boundary. Retrieval pipelines generally need plaintext or a deliberately designed protected representation to parse documents and create embeddings; encrypted bytes cannot simply be sent to an ordinary embedding model. Decrypt only inside an isolated job or service, minimize retention of intermediate text, and treat embeddings, chunk metadata and prompts as potentially sensitive outputs.
Native at-rest CMK settings protect the storage locations they name, not every in-memory tensor, model context or external vector index. Add access controls, network policies, retention limits and audit coverage for those stages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rotate the KEK without re-encrypting every document?
Often, yes, when the envelope stores a wrapped DEK and the format supports rewrapping. You can unwrap each DEK with the old KEK and wrap it with the new key while leaving the document ciphertext unchanged, but you must retain the old key until all envelopes and backups are migrated.

A conventional embedding model cannot interpret ciphertext. A trusted processing boundary must decrypt the required content, create the embedding, and protect the resulting vector and metadata under their own access and retention rules.
What should happen if Azure Key Vault is temporarily unavailable?
Design bounded retries and an explicit availability policy rather than silently storing plaintext. Cached or locally held key material should be minimized, protected, monitored and expired according to risk; decide in advance whether the workload queues, fails closed or uses an approved continuity region.
Does AES-GCM prevent a stolen ciphertext from revealing the document?
It provides confidentiality and integrity only when keys remain secret and nonces are never reused with the same key. Nonce generation, storage and crash recovery therefore belong in the envelope-format specification and must be tested under parallel and retried uploads.
