For a Windows PC, Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free are effectively tied in the latest independent tests. AV-TEST’s August 2026 results award each product 6/6 for protection, performance and usability, while AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 real-world test places both in a 99.3% protection group. Those results do not establish a universal winner.
Your choice should therefore depend on the interface you prefer, the free-tier features available in your current build, how you feel about upgrade prompts and data-collection settings, and how each app behaves on your own hardware. Avast and AVG are related products—AVG uses the Avast engine according to AV-Comparatives—but they remain separately branded applications with separate privacy notices.
Are Avast and AVG the same antivirus?
No. Avast and AVG are separate consumer applications that share corporate and engine history, but a shared detection engine does not prove that every feature, setting, interface or data practice is identical.

AV-Comparatives records that Avast acquired AVG in October 2016. Gen Digital has owned both brands since November 2022. In its 2026 real-world protection report, the lab says AVG uses the Avast engine. That relationship helps explain why independent malware tests often produce nearly identical results.
#1 Best Overall
An engine is only one layer of an antivirus product. The surrounding services, user interface, optional shields, notification logic, account requirements and privacy controls can still differ. Treat the products as close relatives rather than interchangeable installers.
Which operating systems are covered?
The strongest head-to-head evidence in this comparison is for Windows. AV-Comparatives lists Avast home products for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, while its AVG listing covers Windows, Mac and Android. That inventory does not guarantee that every edition is currently available in every country or that a feature present on Windows exists on another platform. The 2026 scores below should not be transferred to Mac, Android or iOS.
Which has better protection in the latest tests?
Neither has a defensible protection advantage in the latest comparable Windows results. Two independent test programs put Avast and AVG together at the top of their respective results.
AV-TEST Windows results, August 2026
AV-TEST scores protection, performance and usability on a six-point scale for the specific product builds it evaluates. Its August 2026 results show a perfect score for both free products:
| Product and tested build | Protection | Performance | Usability | Test scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avast Free Antivirus 26.6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | Windows test published August 2026 |
| AVG Antivirus Free 26.6 & 26.7 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | Windows test published August 2026 |
See the AV-TEST Avast Windows results and AV-TEST AVG Windows results for the lab’s product pages. A perfect round means both products met that test’s criteria for the specified builds; it is not a guarantee that every future update or every user’s workload will behave identically.
Why a lab tie is not a promise of identical protection
Lab scores are snapshots. The tested versions, malware samples, Windows updates, cloud connections and scoring rules all matter. A tie tells you that the products were equally effective under that test’s conditions, not that they will block the same event at the same millisecond on every computer.
What did AV-Comparatives find in real-world testing?
AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test reported a 99.3% protection rate for a group containing Avast and AVG across 400 test cases. The report tested versions 26.1–26.4 and explains that its percentage calculation gives user-dependent outcomes half weight.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That methodology matters. The test uses real-world URLs and attack paths, and the report groups products that are statistically equally effective when their false-positive rates remain below the lab’s threshold. A 99.3% figure is therefore not a promise that either application will stop 99.3% of all threats encountered outside the test. Read the full AV-Comparatives February–May 2026 report for the test design and version list.
The report also identifies AVG as using the Avast engine. That is useful context for the matching result, but it does not remove the need to compare the applications’ controls and user experience.
Which antivirus is lighter or faster on a PC?
The available evidence does not support calling Avast or AVG universally lighter. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance test evaluated the 26.3 editions on an up-to-date 64-bit Windows 11 system, and the lab explicitly warns that its findings apply to the tested versions and hardware/software context.
Performance tests measure the effect of a particular build while performing defined operations such as launching programs, copying files or installing software. Your processor, storage type, available memory, startup programs, Windows patches and background tasks can change the result. Use the AV-Comparatives Consumer Performance Test, April 2026 as an indicator, not a guarantee.
A practical way to compare performance on your own PC
- Record your current startup time and the time required to open the applications you use most.
- Uninstall any existing third-party antivirus before installing the trial product; running two real-time antivirus engines can cause conflicts and misleading slowdowns.
- Install only one free product, allow it to update its definitions, and restart Windows.
- Repeat the same tasks while watching for delayed file copies, application launches or browser responsiveness.
- After testing, keep the product that protects your workflow without unacceptable delays, or uninstall it cleanly before trying the other.
This is a personal comparison, not a replacement for a controlled laboratory benchmark. Keep your Windows version, workload and test procedure the same when switching products.
What do Avast Free and AVG Free include?
The evidence establishes a capable free malware-protection tier for each brand, but it does not provide a complete, current feature matrix for every region or build. Avoid assuming that a feature advertised for a paid edition is included in the free download.
| Area | What is established | What to verify in your installer |
|---|---|---|
| Core malware protection | Both products earned perfect protection scores in AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows round. | Build number, update status and enabled real-time components. |
| AVG real-time protection | AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer review describes AVG’s real-time anti-malware capabilities. | Which shields are enabled in the current regional build. |
| Ransomware controls | The same 2025 review describes a specialized ransomware shield for AVG. | Whether the control is available in your free edition and which folders or applications it covers. |
| Avast free-tier feature inventory | Not stated in the supplied comparative evidence. | Review the components shown during setup and in the current app dashboard. |
| Paid-only capabilities | Avast Premium Security and AVG Internet Security are optional paid products. | Which prompts refer to a paid upgrade and whether the feature is necessary for your use case. |
The feature observations above come from AV-Comparatives’ Consumer Summary Report 2025. Because software changes, open the component list in the build you are actually installing instead of relying on an old screenshot or review.
Do Avast and AVG show upgrade prompts?
Yes, the independent 2025 user-experience review reports upgrade prompts in both free applications. It does not establish that the prompts appear with the same frequency, wording or timing, so do not choose one on the assumption that the two interfaces are identical.
Recommended Free Tools
What to look for during setup
- Read each installation screen instead of accepting every optional component automatically.
- Distinguish a notification about a completed free scan from an offer for a paid product.
- Check whether a recommended setting changes your browser, default search or notification behavior before confirming it.
- After installation, open the notification and privacy sections and turn off nonessential marketing messages where the app provides that control.
Prompts are part of the free business model. They do not, by themselves, show that malware protection is weaker, but an aggressive notification style can make one product a better fit for a distraction-sensitive user.
How do Avast and AVG handle privacy and telemetry?
Privacy is a separate comparison axis because the brands maintain separate product privacy notices. Avast’s notice is at avast.com/products-policy, and AVG’s is at avg.com/en-ww/products-policy. Both notices have 2026 update dates in the supplied material, but the applicable wording and settings can depend on the product and region.
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 review reported that Avast collected user data through third-party analysis services by default for in-house purposes such as product improvement. That observation describes the reviewed configuration; it should not be generalized to every current build without checking the notice and controls presented to you.
Privacy checks before you commit
- Open the privacy notice for the exact brand and region you intend to use.
- During installation, read consent screens for analytics, product-improvement and personalized-offer data.
- After setup, revisit the app’s privacy or general settings; an update can add or rename controls.
- Record which optional sharing settings you disabled so you can recheck them after a major version upgrade.
- If your organization has stricter data rules, have an administrator review the notice before deployment.
Do not assume that Avast and AVG share one privacy policy simply because they share ownership or an engine. Compare the current notices independently.
Which should a Windows user choose?
Because protection and performance lab results are tied, the best choice is the one whose current interface, controls and privacy terms fit your priorities. Use this decision guide rather than looking for a winner that the evidence does not support.
| If your priority is… | How to decide | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum confidence in recent Windows test results | Choose either, then keep it updated. | Both received 6/6 protection, performance and usability in AV-TEST’s August 2026 round and appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 99.3% group. |
| A quieter desktop | Install each separately for a short, controlled trial and keep the one with less disruptive notification behavior. | The 2025 review found prompts in both but did not prove identical frequency. |
| Ransomware-focused controls | Inspect AVG’s current free installation to see whether the described specialized shield is included and configurable. | AV-Comparatives documented the capability in its 2025 review, but editions can change. |
| Data-minimization preferences | Compare both privacy notices and disable optional sharing where controls permit. | The notices are separate, and the 2025 review raised a specific Avast data-collection consideration. |
| Low system impact | Use the same workload to compare both on your own PC. | The April 2026 performance test was bound to particular 26.3 builds and a Windows 11 test system. |
| Non-Windows protection | Check current platform availability and feature lists before downloading. | The cited head-to-head scores are Windows-specific and do not establish parity on other operating systems. |
How should you install and configure one safely?
A careful installation reduces conflicts and prevents accidental enrollment in features you do not want. The labels can change between builds, so use the current installer and dashboard wording.

- Prepare Windows. Install pending Windows updates, restart the computer and save open work.
- Remove conflicting security software. Uninstall another third-party antivirus and restart when requested. Windows Security can provide baseline protection while you decide, but do not leave two third-party real-time engines active.
- Download the free edition from the vendor’s official site. Confirm that the installer names the free product rather than a time-limited premium trial if that is your goal.
- Read component choices. Decline optional browser, cleanup or promotional components unless you specifically need them. Do not treat a paid feature prompt as a requirement for basic antivirus protection.
- Review privacy choices. Read analytics and product-improvement consent screens, then open the privacy settings after the first launch.
- Update before scanning. Let the application download current program and malware definitions, then restart if it requests one.
- Run an initial scan. Start with the app’s recommended scan and investigate detections rather than restoring files blindly.
- Check status after setup. Confirm that real-time protection, updates and any shield you intend to use show as active.
- Reassess after several days. Note notification volume, application delays and false positives. If the experience is unsuitable, uninstall one product completely before installing the other.
What problems can occur, and how do you fix them?
Windows says protection is duplicated
This usually indicates that more than one real-time security product is installed or that an old installation left services behind. Remove the unused third-party antivirus with its normal uninstaller, restart, and check Windows Security’s provider list before installing another product.
Installation fails or the app will not update
Restart Windows, confirm that the system clock and network connection are correct, and retry with other security software removed. If the installer still fails, use the vendor’s current removal or cleanup utility and reinstall only one product. Keep a record of the exact build and error message for support.

Do not add a broad exclusion immediately. Verify the file’s origin and digital signature, submit it through the antivirus application’s false-positive process if available, and create the narrowest exception only after you understand the risk.
The computer feels slower after installation
Wait for the first definition update and initial scan to finish, then compare the same workload with scheduled scans paused or completed. Check startup applications and available storage as well; a change observed after installation is not proof that the antivirus caused every slowdown.
Notifications continue after disabling marketing options
Some alerts may be security or update notices rather than marketing. Open each notification’s source, revisit both the general notification controls and any offer-related setting, and keep essential protection alerts enabled.
When does a paid edition make sense?
Most readers asking this question can start with either free edition. Paid options such as Avast Premium Security or AVG Internet Security are relevant only when a capability you need is not included in the free build. The supplied evidence does not establish a universal feature list or current price for those paid products, so verify the offer shown in your region before paying.
Do not upgrade merely because a dashboard displays a warning that a premium component exists. First determine whether the warning concerns a real security gap, a convenience feature or an optional privacy or cleanup tool. For a single Windows PC that needs basic malware protection, the independent 2026 results do not show that paying for one of these brands is required to obtain strong tested protection.
What is the final Avast-versus-AVG verdict for 2026?
Choose either free product with confidence on Windows, then decide using interface, prompts, privacy settings and local performance. Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free both scored 6/6 in all three AV-TEST categories in August 2026, and both were in AV-Comparatives’ 99.3% real-world protection group for February–May 2026. The evidence supports a tie, not a universal champion.
Install one current build, inspect its free-tier components and privacy controls, and keep it updated. If the notifications or performance do not suit you, uninstall it cleanly and try the other; switching between these two free choices does not require sacrificing the level of protection shown in the cited Windows tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AVG detect malware differently from Avast if both use the Avast engine?
Not necessarily. The engine is a major detection component, but the applications can differ in cloud services, shields, configuration defaults, user interface and update timing. Independent test results show similar outcomes, not byte-for-byte identical behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I run Avast and AVG together for extra protection?
You should not run two third-party antivirus products with real-time protection enabled at the same time. They can conflict, duplicate scanning and create misleading performance or detection problems; test them one at a time instead.
Will changing from Avast to AVG delete my quarantined files?
Quarantine handling is controlled by the product being removed and is not guaranteed to transfer between brands. Review detected items, export any needed logs and resolve or safely delete quarantined files before uninstalling, following the application’s prompts.
How often should I check the privacy settings after installation?
Check them after the first setup, after major application upgrades and whenever the vendor changes its privacy notice. A setting that was optional in one build can be renamed or relocated in a later build.
