Neither Avalanche nor Ethereum is a universal winner for real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. Avalanche offers both public C-Chain integrations and customizable institutional L1 deployments; Ethereum’s institutional activity spans mainnet and Layer 2 networks, with named tokenized fund offerings. The better fit depends on the issuer’s access controls, chain governance, distribution partners, legal and transfer-agent arrangements, and operating requirements—not a headline claim about total value or speed.

What does a tokenized real-world asset actually require?

A blockchain token is only one part of an RWA arrangement. Issuer terms, investor eligibility, custody, transfer restrictions, redemption and applicable law all shape what the token represents and who may hold or transfer it. Technical issuance does not, by itself, establish legal compliance, ownership rights, liquidity or an investor’s ability to redeem.

BlackRock’s 4 August 2026 announcement illustrates the distinction: its on-chain share classes represent shares in underlying funds, while the official shareholder register continues to be maintained through transfer-agent infrastructure. A token can therefore be part of a regulated fund workflow without replacing the fund’s legal and administrative records.

How do Avalanche and Ethereum differ as deployment choices?

Decision area Avalanche Ethereum What an issuer should assess
Deployment model Public C-Chain integrations as well as customizable institutional L1 deployments described by Avalanche Evergreen. Institutional RWA activity across Ethereum mainnet and Layer 2 networks. Whether the product needs a dedicated chain configuration or can meet its requirements through contracts, permissions and a mainnet or L2 deployment.
Access and chain controls Evergreen describes user and validator permissioning, jurisdictional geofencing, custom gas tokens, gasless transaction facilitation and EVM compatibility. The reviewed Ethereum institutional materials emphasize the mainnet-and-L2 ecosystem; they do not describe an equivalent Ethereum-branded customizable permissioned-L1 product. Who can transact, who governs validators, how permissions are enforced, and what operational responsibilities accompany the chosen setup.
Ecosystem and distribution Avalanche’s Builder Hub directory lists C-Chain integrations associated with tokenized offerings from BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, Janus Henderson, KKR, VanEck and WisdomTree, alongside payment and stablecoin infrastructure. Ethereum’s institutional overview describes stablecoin and RWA activity across L1 and L2, and lists products including BUIDL, USTB and OUSG. Whether the specific investors, custodians, transfer agents, exchanges and applications needed for the offering support its actual network and product.
Product examples Avalanche’s RWA materials identify BUIDL through Securitize. Evergreen describes an Intain marketplace for tokenized asset-backed securities and an Onyx/Apollo proof of concept. BlackRock announced tokenized European money-market fund share classes on Ethereum; Ethereum’s institutional overview also names BUIDL, USTB and OUSG. Verify whether an example is a live offering or a proof of concept, and check its current status, eligible investors, geography and supported network.
Comparable cost, performance and RWA totals Not stated as a common independent benchmark against Ethereum in the reviewed Avalanche pages. Not stated as a common independent benchmark against Avalanche in the reviewed Ethereum materials. Use dated figures with matching definitions and methodology. The reviewed sources do not establish a like-for-like winner for value, fees, throughput or liquidity.

A directory entry or ecosystem overview is evidence that an integration or offering is identified by that source; it is not an independent audit of trading activity or proof that every investor can access the product. Similarly, support for EVM-compatible tooling does not erase differences in validator governance, operating responsibilities or deployment configuration.

What does Avalanche offer for institutional RWA issuance?

Public C-Chain integrations

Avalanche’s RWA overview names funds, treasuries, private credit, public equities, real estate, commodities and money-market funds as target asset classes. Its Builder Hub directory lists C-Chain integrations linked to several named financial firms. These materials make C-Chain relevant when an issuer’s required providers and distribution route already support that network, but the listings alone do not establish universal product availability.

Customizable institutional L1s

Avalanche Evergreen is presented as a set of institutional L1 deployments and related tools. Its described features include KYC/KYB-oriented user and validator permissioning, jurisdictional geofencing, custom gas tokens, gasless transaction facilitation and out-of-the-box EVM compatibility. These are chain-level configuration options; they do not determine whether an offering satisfies securities law or creates a liquid market.

Avalanche’s Evergreen page says Intain administers $5.5 billion in assets and launched an on-chain marketplace for tokenized asset-backed securities on an Avalanche L1. The $5.5 billion is a figure attributed to Intain by Avalanche, and the page reviewed did not show a publication date for it. The same Avalanche materials describe an Onyx/J.P. Morgan and Apollo effort as a proof of concept, not as evidence of a generally available production offering.

What does Ethereum offer, including its Layer 2 ecosystem?

Ethereum’s institutional RWA story is not limited to mainnet: its institutional overview presents activity across L1 and L2 networks and lists tokenized treasury and cash-equivalent products. For an issuer, that broad ecosystem may matter where target investors, service providers or applications already operate across those networks. The issuer still needs to verify the exact deployment and integrations for its own product.

On 4 August 2026, BlackRock announced on-chain share classes for selected Institutional Cash Series money-market funds in Europe, minted on Ethereum using Kinexys by J.P. Morgan’s tokenization platform. BlackRock described 24/7 peer-to-peer transferability between approved investor wallets and named eligible markets. The announcement is a dated example, not a guarantee of current access: investors should confirm the offering’s present availability and eligibility terms.

BlackRock said the relevant cash-management funds had a combined US$311 billion in AUM across 15 markets. That figure describes the underlying fund platform receiving tokenized functionality; it is not the value of assets already tokenized. The announcement also makes clear that the official shareholder register remains with transfer-agent infrastructure.

How should you evaluate access, liquidity and financial-market plumbing?

Do not treat a token’s existence or an institutional launch announcement as proof of open transfers or active secondary-market liquidity. Access can be restricted at the asset, wallet or investor level, and redemption and ownership depend on the relevant legal and operational arrangements.

Aave Labs’ 26 August 2025 announcement of Aave Horizon describes one Ethereum use case: a lending market where institutional or other qualified users borrow stablecoins against RWA collateral. The announcement says issuers set requirements for their assets and manage token-access permissions; stablecoin supply is described as permissionless, subject to the product’s configuration. Those conditions apply to that particular protocol offering, not to all RWA tokens.

Can current figures show which network leads?

No defensible winner on total RWA value, transaction cost, throughput or liquidity follows from the reviewed materials. Avalanche’s RWA page displayed more than $900 million of BUIDL assets on Avalanche when accessed, without a clearly visible as-of date. Ethereum’s institutional page displayed $16.7 billion for its L1 RWA sector and $197 billion for Ethereum plus L2s, also without a clear common measurement date and methodology in the reviewed content. Those page-displayed figures are volatile and cannot fairly be compared with each other or treated as independently reconciled totals.

For a decision that depends on quantitative performance, request figures for the specific asset and workflow, measured over the same period and using the same definitions. The pages reviewed do not supply a common independent benchmark that resolves that comparison.

Which network should an issuer choose?

Start with the product’s real operating model, then test each network against it. An issuer considering Avalanche should determine whether C-Chain integrations suffice or whether Evergreen’s configurable L1 controls justify a dedicated deployment and its associated governance and operational choices. An issuer considering Ethereum should identify the relevant mainnet or L2 deployment and verify support from the investors and service providers its distribution plan requires.

  1. Define the legal and investor model. Specify eligible holders, transfer rules, jurisdictions, redemption terms and the official recordkeeping arrangement.
  2. Map the required participants. Confirm support from custodians, transfer agents, distributors, wallets, venues and any lending or settlement applications that matter to the product.
  3. Choose the deployment shape. Compare an Avalanche C-Chain integration, an Avalanche institutional L1, and the relevant Ethereum mainnet or L2 option against the required access controls and governance.
  4. Validate operating economics and performance. Model the actual transactions, integrations and operational responsibilities using comparable, dated measurements rather than network-wide slogans.
  5. Verify availability before launch. Recheck the product’s current status, supported contracts and networks, geography and investor eligibility; these details can change.
