When speech does not match a speaker’s lips, one signal path is arriving earlier than the other. The reliable fix is to identify every processing hop, determine whether audio leads or trails video, and add a measured delay to the early path—preferably with automatic HDMI latency exchange, or with the smallest manual A/V Sync offset that makes a test clip line up.

Display processing can add up to 100 ms, while encoding, decoding, buffering, AV receivers, soundbars, ARC/eARC, optical links and wireless headphones add their own delays. The procedure below shows how to isolate the cause, choose the right control and avoid chasing the problem with random settings.

What causes audio and video to go out of sync?

Audio and video travel as separate signals. Each encoder, decoder, processor, cable interface and buffer can add a different amount of latency. If the video path takes longer, sound appears early; if the audio path takes longer, voices appear late.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IEC TS 62312-2 treats this processing delay as unavoidable latency and distinguishes it from the intentional delay added to restore synchronization. Its model places synchronization control before final reproduction, using timing information and controller adjustments rather than relying on the viewer to tolerate a mismatch.

The European Broadcasting Union reported in 2009 that modern LCD and plasma displays could add up to 100 ms of processing delay. Separating audio and video connections can therefore create a substantial error even when each device is working normally. Picture enhancement, frame interpolation, noise reduction and scaling are common reasons a television takes longer to present a frame than an attached audio device takes to play its sound.

Other causes include an AV receiver or soundbar decoding a stream, a wireless headphone link buffering packets, a source switching between codecs, and a streaming service accumulating buffer before playback. A mismatch can also be introduced inside a media file: Apple documents an AAC example in which 2,112 silent priming samples remain unless the playback system trims them at startup and during seeking.

How do I tell whether the sound is ahead or behind the picture?

Use a scene with an obvious mouth movement and a sharp sound, such as a handclap, rather than judging from background music. Watch several repetitions so you do not mistake an actor’s natural pause for a timing error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Play a known synchronization test or a dialogue scene through the complete setup you normally use.
  2. Watch the first consonant or clap. If the sound happens before the visible action, audio leads and the audio path needs delay. If the action is visible first, audio trails and the video path, or an audio advance control, must be addressed.
  3. Repeat the check with the television speakers, then with the soundbar or receiver. A change between those tests identifies the added device or connection as part of the latency.
  4. Test a local file and a streamed program. If only one source is wrong, its buffering or codec timing is more likely than the display itself.

Make one adjustment at a time and note the direction. A positive number does not mean the same thing on every product: some controls delay audio, while others expose a video-delay or “audio advance” setting. Confirm the wording in the device’s own menu.

Which parts of a home-theater chain should I check?

Draw the signal path from source to screen and list every point where audio can branch away from video. The first device that changes the timing is the most useful place to correct it.

Source and playback app

Game consoles, disc players, set-top boxes, computers and streaming apps can each apply different decoding and buffering. A file with untrimmed AAC priming samples may begin with audio behind the picture and can drift again after seeking. Note whether the error occurs only after a pause, seek or quality change.

AV receiver or soundbar

Receivers and soundbars may decode, resample, virtualize or equalize audio before sending it onward. HDMI-based systems can have several paths at once: source-to-receiver video, receiver-to-display video, and receiver-to-speaker audio. Optical connections and wireless speakers add separate interfaces that do not share HDMI timing information.

Television or monitor

Display processing is often the slowest part of the chain. Compare the normal picture mode with a low-processing or game-oriented mode, then re-check the same clip. Keep the mode that provides acceptable image quality without adding a new mismatch.

Headphones and other wireless devices

Wireless audio must buffer packets to prevent dropouts. Bluetooth or proprietary links can therefore lag behind television speakers, and different headphone models can produce different delays. Treat the headphones as a separate output path; a setting that fixes speakers may not fix them.

What is the correct way to fix lip-sync on a TV, soundbar or receiver?

Correct the path that arrives first, not the one that merely has the more visible control. Start with automatic coordination, then use a small manual offset while replaying the same test.

  1. Simplify the system. Connect the source directly to the display and use the display’s speakers. If synchronization returns, reconnect the receiver or soundbar and its HDMI ARC/eARC or optical link. Add wireless headphones last. This one-device-at-a-time method isolates the offending hop.
  2. Reduce display processing. Compare picture-processing modes, including any motion, noise-reduction or enhancement features. Do not assume a picture preset is faster; verify with the test scene.
  3. Enable automatic latency coordination. HDMI’s Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) allows a source to learn latency and calculate an adjustment. It is designed for systems with multiple audio and video paths, including receivers and soundbars. When both ends support it, enable the coordination before entering a manual number.
  4. Open the device’s A/V Sync control. The exact name varies: A/V Sync, Audio Delay, Lip Sync or Audio Advance. Sony’s STR-DN1060 and STR-DN860 help guide documents HDMI Auto synchronization plus manual adjustment from 0 to 300 ms in 10 ms increments. That range is model-specific, not a universal capability.
  5. Change the value in small steps. Begin with one 10 ms step, replay the same mouth-and-sound cue, and continue only while the mismatch improves. Large jumps can pass the correct point and make the opposite error.
  6. Recheck every source and output. A setting may apply only to one input, one listening mode or one audio output. Verify live television, a local file, streaming playback and headphones if you use them.

How much delay should I add?

There is no safe universal number because the needed correction is the difference between two complete paths. Measure or obtain each path’s latency, identify which presentation is early, and delay that path by the measured difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if a display and video chain take 80 ms while a soundbar produces audio in 30 ms, audio leads by approximately 50 ms; an audio-delay setting near 50 ms is a logical starting point. The figure is illustrative, not a specification for your equipment. Recheck after every change because a different input, picture mode or wireless output changes the result.

IEC TS 62312-1-1:2018 provides general measurement methods and includes an audio-latency annex. In professional or installation work, use that type of measurement rather than guessing from a product’s advertised processing mode. Consumer controls often round the result to fixed increments, so the final setting may be the closest available step rather than an exact match.

What do ARC, eARC, optical and HDMI latency features change?

The connection determines what timing information can be shared and how many independent buffers exist.

Approach Timing behavior What to verify
HDMI source directly to display, display speakers Fewest hops; useful baseline for diagnosis Whether the mismatch disappears before adding external audio
HDMI through an AV receiver Receiver may process audio and video on separate paths Receiver A/V Sync, video pass-through settings and source-specific offsets
HDMI ARC/eARC to a soundbar or receiver Audio returns from the display, adding another device and buffer Automatic synchronization support, firmware behavior and the selected TV output mode
Optical audio Separate audio link with no HDMI video timing exchange Manual delay controls and whether the TV applies a different processing mode
Wireless headphones or speakers Packet buffering can make audio noticeably late Headset-specific latency, an available low-latency mode and independent offset controls

HDMI LIP is most useful when the source, display and intermediate devices actually implement the protocol. If one component does not report latency, the chain may fall back to manual correction. ARC or eARC alone does not guarantee perfect lip sync; it describes the audio return path, not the delay behavior of every connected device.

How does streaming latency differ from lip-sync latency?

“Glass-to-glass” latency measures the time from a real-world event to its correctly synchronized playback. It includes capture or encoding, ingest, distribution, buffering and decoding, not just the television’s local audio-video offset.

IETF RFC 9317 groups streaming use cases into four broad ranges:

Category Definition in RFC 9317 (2022) Typical implication
Ultra-low-latency Less than 1 second Designed for interaction or live participation
Low-latency live Less than 10 seconds Live viewing with a small distribution buffer
Non-low-latency live 10 seconds to a few minutes Normal live delivery where delay is acceptable
On-demand Hours or more relative to the event Delay is not intended to track a live event

These are end-to-end categories, not settings that repair a local lip-sync offset. A stream can be several seconds behind the event yet have perfectly aligned speech and picture. Conversely, a stream can be timely but locally misaligned because a display, receiver or codec path adds a different delay to audio and video.

How do codec delays create a mismatch after seeking?

Codecs may include samples used to prime an encoder before meaningful audio begins. Apple’s QuickTime File Format documentation gives an AAC example with 2,112 silent priming samples. If a player does not discard those samples when playback starts and when the user seeks, audio can begin behind the video or shift after a seek.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a consistent offset at the beginning of a file, a change immediately after seeking, or a mismatch that does not appear in another app playing the same file. Use a player that honors the file’s timing metadata, update the app, and compare a remuxed or differently encoded copy only when you control the media workflow. Do not “fix” a codec problem by applying a permanent television delay that makes every other source wrong.

How should I compare devices or solutions?

Price and advertised format support do not reveal whether a product will solve a timing problem. Compare the controls and the path behavior that matter to your setup.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Measured latency Is latency stated as a measured value, and under what mode, codec and connection?
Automatic reporting Does the source or device exchange latency through HDMI LIP or another documented mechanism?
Manual range and step How many milliseconds can be added, and in what increments? Sony documents 0–300 ms in 10 ms steps for the specified receivers.
Multi-hop support Can the device handle a source, AVR or soundbar, ARC/eARC return and display without losing synchronization data?
Wireless behavior Is there a separate offset or a documented low-latency mode for headphones and wireless speakers?
Compatibility Does the control apply to every input, resolution, HDR mode, listening mode and source app you use?

A device with a broad manual range is useful for unusual installations, but automatic reporting can be more repeatable when several components change modes. Measurement guidance from IEC TS 62312-1-1:2018 is a better basis for a fixed installation than relying on a single product brochure figure.

What should I do when the normal controls do not fix it?

Use a controlled fault-isolation sequence instead of stacking offsets.

  • Confirm that the symptom is repeatable with one test clip and one input.
  • Record whether audio leads or trails before touching any setting.
  • Reset temporary source and receiver processing modes, then test the shortest direct connection.
  • Reconnect one device at a time and test after each addition.
  • Check whether the offset changes with a picture mode, refresh mode, HDR mode, audio format or listening mode.
  • Test the television speakers separately from ARC/eARC, optical and wireless outputs.
  • Keep only the correction that works for the affected path; remove offsets from devices that are not in that path.
  • If automatic HDMI synchronization is available, turn it on and then clear old manual values before measuring again.

If no combination produces a stable result, the remaining issue may be a firmware defect, an unsupported timing exchange or a source file with incorrect timestamps. Document the exact source, connection, format, picture mode and observed offset when contacting the manufacturer; those details are more useful than saying simply that the sound is “slow.”

What latency is acceptable for interactive audio?

Acceptability depends on the activity. A small offset may be tolerable for casual viewing but distracting during dialogue, gaming or music performance. Google’s 2026 ChromeOS Compatible Audio Latency Specification Module requires certified audio peripherals to begin playback within 500 ms of a user action and to report real-world latency accurately within 50 ms. Those are certification requirements for peripherals, not a promise that every television setup will feel synchronized.

Use the 500 ms and 50 ms figures only in that ChromeOS certification context. For home-theater lip sync, the practical target is the smallest repeatable mismatch your eyes and ears no longer notice, verified with the exact source and output you use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can turning off motion smoothing really improve lip sync?

It can, when the display’s motion or image-processing pipeline is the slower path. Compare modes with the same test clip; the correct choice is the one that reduces the measured mismatch without creating unacceptable picture artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is lip sync correct on TV speakers but wrong through my soundbar?

The soundbar introduces a separate decode, buffer or wireless stage, while the TV speakers use the display’s local timing. Reconnect the soundbar through its normal HDMI ARC/eARC or optical path, then adjust that output’s A/V Sync rather than changing the television setting used by its own speakers.

Why does the offset change when I switch apps or audio formats?

Different apps and codecs can use different buffering and decoding paths, and a receiver may change processing when the format changes. Keep a source-specific offset only if the device supports one; otherwise favor automatic HDMI coordination and the mode that works across your main sources.

Is a lip-sync problem proof that my HDMI cable is defective?

A cable fault usually causes dropouts, handshake failures or missing formats rather than a stable, repeatable offset. A consistent delay points first to processing and buffering, although replacing a damaged cable can still be sensible after the direct-connection test.
