AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon each fell about 5% on October 22, 2026, after a Bloomberg report said SpaceX was seeking access to at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites for its planned Starlink Mobile service. The report, relayed by PhoneArena, described negotiations—possibly involving tower owner Crown Castle—not a signed lease or a launched nationwide carrier. Investors treated the prospect of a new satellite-mobile competitor as a risk, but the share move does not establish future subscriber losses, lower revenue or a change in network quality.
What did SpaceX reportedly seek?
PhoneArena’s October 22 account, citing Bloomberg and people familiar with the matter, said SpaceX was in talks to lease space at at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites for Starlink Mobile. Crown Castle was identified as a possible negotiating counterparty, but neither a final site count nor commercial terms were disclosed.
Cellular operators commonly rent positions on towers for antennas instead of owning every structure. Access to a large terrestrial site footprint could give a satellite-focused service additional locations for network equipment and backhaul. The report framed ground sites as useful because satellite signals may be less dependable in some places, including indoors. That is the stated rationale for the talks, not proof that SpaceX has solved coverage, capacity or deployment challenges.

- No cited source confirms that SpaceX and Crown Castle signed an agreement.
- Pricing, timing, exclusivity, the final number of sites and a construction schedule were not disclosed.
- The reporting does not establish how the plan would affect AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon customers.
Crown Castle CEO Chris Hillabrant did not confirm negotiations with SpaceX. PhoneArena attributed this general comment to him: “You can assume that we’re talking to all parties.” That statement should not be read as confirmation of a SpaceX deal.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Why did the three carriers’ shares fall?
PhoneArena reported that AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon each slid around 5% after the cell-site story. The move indicates that investors reassessed the possibility of a stronger competitor in mobile connectivity. A one-day reaction, however, is not a forecast of subscriber counts, pricing, profits, dividends or long-term market share.
How is this different from the October 9 selloff?
Telecom stocks had already suffered a separate decline on October 9 after SpaceX’s low-band spectrum transaction heightened competition concerns. Reuters reported that T-Mobile fell 13.2%, AT&T declined and Verizon lost about 10% that day. That event involved spectrum news, including up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz licenses, and should not be combined with the later report about leasing cell-site space.

- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How does this relate to the carriers’ own satellite plans?
On October 1, 2026, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced a joint venture intended to make satellite-enabled connectivity easier to provide in underserved areas of the United States. T-Mobile’s newsroom described the effort as complementary to terrestrial mobile networks and said existing carrier-satellite agreements could remain in place.
The announcement shows that the established carriers are pursuing satellite connectivity as well. It does not say the venture was created in response to SpaceX’s reported cell-site negotiations, and the cited release does not provide enough technical detail to rank the two approaches on coverage, speed or device support. SpaceX’s reported plan and the carriers’ joint venture may also differ in ownership, spectrum use and commercial structure.

What should readers watch next?
The most consequential facts would be a confirmed agreement, the number and location of sites, regulatory filings, compatible devices and a deployment timetable. Until those details appear, the story is best understood as a potential infrastructure and competition development rather than a new consumer service that is ready to buy.
- Confirmation: statements or filings from SpaceX, Crown Castle or other tower owners.
- Network design: whether sites support satellite-to-phone links, conventional terrestrial radios, or both.
- Service limits: geography, indoor performance, supported devices and spectrum authorization.
- Commercial terms: wholesale access, exclusivity and how existing carriers might respond.
Analyst Dean Bubley, as quoted by PhoneArena in a discussion of a Wi-Fi-use claim, said: “The explicit Wi-Fi reference is important, but still misses critical details about authentication and federation.” The comment highlights why broad connectivity claims cannot yet be translated into a verified consumer experience.

Does the report change what customers should do now?
No immediate purchase or plan change follows from the reported negotiations. No named consumer product, launch date or confirmed coverage map was disclosed. Customers should continue evaluating mobile service on currently available coverage, pricing and device compatibility rather than on an unconfirmed infrastructure plan.

Did the October 22 drop mean the carriers lost customers?
There is no reported subscriber or revenue result tied to that day’s move. The approximately 5% declines were an investor reaction to a possible competitive threat, not evidence of operating damage.
What was the October 9 SpaceX-related telecom selloff?
Reuters linked that earlier decline to SpaceX’s low-band spectrum deal. T-Mobile fell 13.2%, AT&T declined and Verizon dropped about 10%, making it a separate event from the later cell-site report.
Are AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon already building satellite service together?
They announced a satellite-connectivity joint venture on October 1, 2026, focused on underserved U.S. areas and designed to complement terrestrial networks. The announcement does not establish that it was a direct response to SpaceX.
