AT&T is not automatically a buy after the October 23, 2026 selloff. The shares fell 5.6% after reports that SpaceX is seeking access to at least 80,000 cell sites and could build a fourth U.S. wireless carrier. SpaceX is a credible long-term competitor because it has acquired low-band spectrum and says it intends to build terrestrial wireless infrastructure. However, Reuters reported that a nationwide service would require years of investment and execution. The dip is investable only if AT&T’s latest filings show durable subscriber quality, controlled churn, pricing power, free-cash-flow generation, manageable leverage and well-covered dividends. If those measures are deteriorating, waiting is safer than treating a catalyst-driven decline as a bargain.
What caused AT&T stock to fall?
On October 23, 2026, AT&T fell 5.6% after a report that SpaceX was seeking access to at least 80,000 cell sites for a potential fourth wireless carrier. The report raised a different concern from ordinary quarterly volatility: SpaceX could eventually challenge the network, spectrum and distribution advantages that support the established U.S. carriers.
The move was catalyst-driven rather than proof that AT&T had already lost customers or cash flow. Yes, but the near-term threat is limited by execution. SpaceX already generates Starlink revenue in sparsely populated and rural areas, where satellite coverage can solve connectivity gaps. Turning that capability into a nationwide substitute for a major carrier requires terrestrial infrastructure, spectrum deployment, retail distribution, customer support and years of capital spending.

Why the threat is more serious than satellite emergency coverage
SpaceX acquired 65 megahertz of wireless spectrum for $19.6 billion through two EchoStar transactions, according to Reuters. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said, “The spectrum that we purchased from EchoStar does have terrestrial components, so we definitely intend to build out terrestrial.” That statement points to a hybrid model: satellites for broad reach, low-band spectrum for propagation, and ground-based sites for capacity in populated areas.
Reuters also reported that Shotwell expects SpaceX to win “quite a few” customers from the Big Three carriers. Analysts cited by Reuters cautioned that a nationwide wireless service would still require years of investment and execution. The practical risk to AT&T therefore develops in stages:
- Coverage-gap pressure: Starlink can make rural or hard-to-reach locations more contestable.
- Plan substitution: Customers who value nationwide connectivity more than maximum urban capacity may consider a hybrid offer.
- Pricing pressure: A credible new entrant could force promotions or higher network spending before it wins large subscriber numbers.

Is the 5.6% decline a buying opportunity?
Only conditionally. A lower share price improves expected returns only when the underlying business remains capable of producing the cash and customer economics that justified the earlier valuation. Check subscriber quality, not just net additions
Pull postpaid and prepaid net adds from the latest filing and earnings release, then examine the mix. Growth driven by heavily discounted promotions can be less durable than growth accompanied by stable churn, higher service revenue and limited subsidy pressure. A dip thesis weakens if net additions are positive only because AT&T is buying customers at uneconomic prices.
Check churn and pricing power
Track postpaid churn alongside wireless service revenue or ARPU. Rising churn combined with weaker pricing can indicate that customers are becoming more willing to switch, whether because of promotions from existing rivals or anticipation of a new entrant. Stable churn and resilient service revenue would suggest the October selloff is ahead of the measurable competitive damage.
Check cash generation after network spending
Use free cash flow after capital expenditures, not accounting earnings alone. AT&T must fund spectrum, network upgrades, site leases, debt service and dividends. If cash generation remains strong after required investment, the company has more flexibility to respond to SpaceX; if it is shrinking, a new competitor could make that capital burden more painful.

Check leverage and dividend coverage
Review net debt, maturities, interest costs and the dividend against recurring free cash flow. A high yield is not a margin of safety if debt reduction or network investment is consuming the same cash needed for distributions. Dividend coverage should be evaluated on a forward basis using management guidance and the latest reported cash flow, not on a single unusually strong quarter.

Bottom line: buy, hold or wait?
AT&T can be a buy on the dip, but only with evidence. The 5.6% decline reflects a credible strategic concern: SpaceX owns substantial spectrum, intends to build terrestrial infrastructure and is seeking large-scale cell-site access. Reuters’ reporting also makes clear that a nationwide rival is likely years away and execution-intensive. That time gives AT&T room to defend its network and cash engine, but it does not remove the risk.
The appropriate decision is therefore conditional. Buy when refreshed filings show stable subscriber quality, churn, pricing, free cash flow, leverage and dividend coverage at a valuation that leaves room for competitive pressure.
